Recap / Solar Opposites S1 E7 - "Terry And Korvo Steal A Bear"

Go To

The plot is simple, Terry and Korvo steal a bear. That's all..... Psych! In spite of the title, the episode is focused entirely on the people of the wall so let's get down to it.

When we last left off, our fallen hero Tim is still imprisoned and what's more, tortured under the Duke's orders from his failed attempt at liberation. Cherie, however, busts him and his cellmate Jean-Pierre out of their cell. With the help of Cherie, the new rebellion, and his French comrade, Jean-Pierre, Tim inspires hundreds of wall-goers with letters and a renewed spirit for a better society. It turns out their victory, however, may have a price.

Tropes for this episode include:

  • Bears Are Bad News: The solar opposites eventually finds out it was a very bad idea to steal a bear, as it mauled Terry before turning its attention on the others.
  • Conveniently Timed Attack from Behind: Tim is about to be stabbed by the Sheriff, but Steven shows up and impales the Sheriff from behind.
  • Cruel Mercy: The Duke spared Tim out of his ragtag rebellion, to imprison and whip him as punishment. Tim nearly is broken by the end of it, believing that it's his fault that his friends died. When Cherie busts Tim and Jean-Pierre out of prison, the Duke puts out a kill order for Tim.
  • Et Tu, Brute?: Cherie is betrayed and angry as she's coughing blood after Tim impales her with a spear. She points out in a low voice that she believed in him, and made him the leader. Tim reassures her that he will remember that forever before pulling out the spear and tossing her out through the secret exit.
  • Eye Scream: An unfortunate man got a thumb tack (which was meant for Tim, who was standing behind him) fired into his left eye by the Sheriff.
  • Funny Background Event: The solar opposites' adventure in stealing the bear is seen only in the background. The bear-napping went south: the family got the bear in the kids' bedroom and it attacks them. By the end of the episode the family are planning to steal a shark from an aquarium.
    • Just as Tim and Cherie are having sex, Pupa watches them and starts recording them on his smartphone.
  • Hope Bringer: Tim is surprised to find out that Cherie has turned him into this. She says he was the spark for rebellion.
  • Hope Spot: Molly's owner Steven goes back for her when the Duke floods the lower levels. He manages to get her out of their makeshift farmhouse, and she lets him ride on his back. Then it turns out that the toy submarine to hide out the survivors is too small for her. Molly decides to drown so that her owner can live.
  • Know When to Fold 'Em: The Duke escapes through a hole in the wall when the rebels storm the inner circles.
  • Pink Is Erotic: After comparing scars, Tim and Cherie have sex under pink Christmas lights.
  • Shout-Out: The rebellion's hidden headquarters is a set replica of Seinfeld. Even one of the rebels is modeled after Cosmo Kramer.
  • Take That!: The Bow religion praise Jessie for changing Yumyulack's phone alarm to not be Maroon 5.
  • Taking the Bullet: Jean-Pierre dies from taking a thumb tack to the chest for Tim after the Sheriff impulsively tries to kill him.
  • Wham Episode: Tim succeeds in leading the rebellion against the Duke, who escaped through a hidden hole leading to the outside. But rather than seeking a way out of the Wall, Tim instead takes over the Wall and keeping everyone ignorant of the hole, as he claims that everyone would be safer inside. He also betrays and mortally wounds Cherie for not going along with his plans before tossing out through the hole.
  • Worthy Opponent: Despite himself, the Duke seems to respect that Tim wouldn't give up even when his actions led to multiple people dying. As he escapes, he and Tim share a silent, meaningful gaze.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: Brutally deconstructed. Cherie tells Tim that she has made him the face of the rebellion and that he needs to be the leader of those in the Wall. Tim, of course, demurs, since he got his earlier rebellion killed. Cherie reassures him that he is a good guy and that he can step up to the plate. She regrets her words when the coup is successful, and the Duke escapes out into the aliens' backyard.
