Recap / Solar Opposites S1 E6 - "The P.A.T.R.I.C.I.A Device"

Go To

Intrigued by the concept of man cavesnote , Terry and Korvo decides to build one only to be underwhelm by the result. To solve this problem, Korvo builds P.A.T.R.I.C.I.A., a femme-bot with the personality of various sitcom housewives and programmed to hate man caves such that the duo would want it even more in a case of reverse psychology. This, of course, becomes a problem when P.A.T.R.I.C.I.A. goes rogue.

Jesse needs to break a glass ceiling for her final grade project which turns out to be really difficult in an accepting, non-biased, progressive society so she creates one to break.

Realising what's going on, Yumyulack opts out of both gender-related plots, not wanting to touch up on this controversial subject matter, to have an Australian-themed adventure.

The episode includes the following tropes:

  • AcCENT upon the Wrong SylLABle: The Shlorpians (and P.A.T.R.I.C.I.A.) mispronounce Man Cave as "Manc Ave".
  • Do Androids Dream?: It turns out that P.A.T.R.I.C.I.A. wants to be more than a Wet Blanket Wife. She says that she wants to do more than housework and to complain about the two male aliens in the house. The thing is that Patricia wants to be a killer robot. Jesse disables her before she can go that far, and P.A.T.R.I.C.I.A. agrees to live in a warehouse box with a Henpecked Husband robot.
  • Gender-Blender Name: Lampshaded when Jesse points out that she's a girl, considering the bow. The boys coming to protest her misogynistic club as well as her teacher had mistaken her for a boy, owing to her name and alien features.
  • Gone Horribly Wrong: Realizing that the boys at the school are progressive, and the clubs are too inclusive, Jesse after talking with Yumyulack decides to "create" a glass ceiling to break. She creates a new club that is meant to be misogynistic and arrives at the meeting to reveal she is the founder. It turns out the boys were there to protest the club; they believe that misogyny is Serious Business. When Jesse explains that this was just for homework, they nearly give chase as part of an angry mob.
  • Hidden Depths: For someone given blowoff homework the week that Jesse has to break the patriarchy, Yumyulack is surprisingly introspective. He tells Jesse that getting involved without knowing what you're doing is bound to make things worse.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: When Yumyulack refuses to take part in the wacky shenanigans that either party has, you know that things are going to go horribly wrong, even by his standards.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Yumyulack refuses to get involved with either Jesse's homework or the man cave issue. He apparently has an Australian adventure involving koalas.
  • Take That!: The episode makes fun of how everyone feels the need to participate in Gender Politics. Yumyulack points out that wading into such complicated territory never ends well, and complains about people on the internet arguing about who can be President and who can bust ghosts.
    • Korvo created a cuck-bot that resembles Ted Cruz for P.A.T.R.I.C.I.A. as company.
Korvo: I didn't try to make him look like Ted Cruz. It just happens with these things.
  • Wet Blanket Wife: The eponymous device was created to invoke this, as the Shlorpians believe a Manc Ave experience isn't complete without one.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: Jesse tells this to P.A.T.R.I.C.I.A..
