Recap / My Little Pony: Make Your Mark: S4 E4 "Sunny Side Up"

Go To

Hitch and Sunny host a cooking show while Opaline takes matters into her own hooves after Misty's latest failure.

Tropes:

  • All Part of the Show: Hitch and Sunny's cooking show is derailed by the former's clumsiness, but then they begin goofing around and the viewers love it. Pipp's attempt to recapture that magic ends up upsetting Sunny, since they are deviating from her initial vision.
  • Ambiguous Situation: Opaline's recount on how she was openly neglected by Celestia and Luna growing up. Though it's implied she's just being an Unreliable Narrator clinging to a Self-Serving Memory.
  • Artifact of Doom: Opaline seeks out the Dragonstone, a magical object that can absorb dragonfire.
  • Call-Back:
    • Hitch recalls the time he tried to run Sunny's smoothie cart in "The Cutie Mark Mix-Up".
    • The magic mouse contruct Opaline created in that same episode also briefly appears.
  • Dispel Magic: Misty is able to cancel Opaline's "grounding" spell that's keeping her pinned to the floor. She's completely unaware that she uses her own magical ability and horn to do so, under the mistaken belief that a unicorn without a cutie mark cannot use magicnote , and instead credits her physical strength for allowing her to break free. (She still can't get past the force field that Opaline cast on the doorway, though.)
  • Disproportionate Retribution: Opaline was so angered by Celestia and Luna supposedly dismissing her that she decided to dedicate herself to becoming a more powerful Alicorn than either of them.
  • Dissonant Serenity: Zigzagged; When Misty confesses that she has once again failed to capture Sparky, Opaline seems quite calm about it. But just as Misty starts praising for this, Opaline explodes with fury, revealing that she was just taking a moment to breathe in for her tirade.
  • Failed a Spot Check: Thankfully for Misty, Opaline doesn't notice she has already dispelled the magic binding her to the floor when she breaks the spell herself.
  • Flashback: Opaline uses her pool to show a flashback of herself in Skyros being envious of two other alicorns implied to be Celestia and Luna.
  • Foodfight!: When Sunny accidentally sends some fruit flying into Hitch's face, he returns the favor, which quickly leads to a friendly back-and-forth between them and leaves both them and the set Covered in Gunge.
  • Force-Field Door: Opaline places a magical barrier around the doorway into Misty's room, preventing her from leaving even after she frees her hooves.
  • Heel Realization: After being inspired by Sunny's speech, Misty realizes she doesn't want to serve Opaline and decides to leave. Unfortunately, she spends so much time thinking it over that Opaline returns before she can figure out how to escape, and she isn't willing to confront Opaline directly.
  • Ineffectual Loner: Opaline goes about getting the Dragonstone via her own limited magic and brute force alone, but it is readily apparent that she would have had a far easier time of it had she some real friends to aid her. She can't even lift herself off the ground due to how low her power is, which ends up costing her the stone when it falls into a crevice.
  • Innocently Insensitive: Pipp pushes Sunny and Hitch into being part of the show a little too forcefully, without considering their feelings on the matter (which Sunny not-too-subtly points out during her big speech).
  • It's All About Me: Opaline, twice over.
    • Her backstory states that she was so insulted by Celestia and Luna supposedly dismissing her that she vowed to become the most powerful Fire Alicorn in existence.
    • While seeking out the Dragonstone, Opaline notes that it could destroy the magical balance in Equestria if used improperly - then decides that it's not her problem.
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: Opaline complains about magical artifacts being placed on perilous cliffs and that it would be helpful if they were just buried at ground level.
  • Noodle Incident: Misty recalls a time when Opaline told her that Earth ponies had laser eyes.
  • Not So Harmless Punishment: Opaline announces that she is "grounding" Misty for her failures. While this sounds harmless, it quickly turns out that this involves magically binding Misty's hooves to the floor of her room and putting a forcefield over the door for good measure.
  • Perfectly Cromulent Word: Pipp encourages Hitch to "Smeyes" - that is, smile with his eyes.
  • Performance Anxiety: Hitch is initially terrifed of being on camera, messing up his lines and being overly clumsy. He does gradually start to loosen up, though.
  • Really 700 Years Old: Opaline was a filly alongside Celestia and Luna, making her well over a thousand years old - Celestia was over 1111 during the previous show, which was long enough ago that Twilight Sparkle is considered a myth.
  • The Reveal: Opaline's glimpse into her foalhood reveals that she was already an alicorn (fire alicorn) and knew Celestia and Luna when they were assumingly of the same age. Their apparent refusal to include her seemed to be Opaline's Start of Darkness.
  • Trash the Set: A natural consequence of the food fight between Sunny and Hitch, serving as a lead-in to their decision not to produce any more episodes of Sunny Side Up.
  • Villain No Longer Idle: Opaline finally decides to take action herself after Misty's repeated failures.
  • Worldbuilding: The location of Skyros is briefly mentioned by Opaline. By all indications, it seems to be a civilization of Alicorns.
  • You Are Grounded!: For failing to retrieve Sparky again, Opaline grounds Misty by magically binding her hooves to the floor of her room and putting a forcefield on the doorway.
