Recap / Martha Speaks S 1 E 42 Martha And The Thief Of Hearts

Go To

On Valentine's Day after school, Carolina, Truman, and T.D. are going to visit Helen and the four of them are discussing their cards. At Helen's place, it's revealed that even the dogs got sent Valentines, and that Carolina made a card for herself with a recording of her singing (badly). While the kids and Martha talk, Skits tries to get their attention, but they brush him off.

The kids and dogs go outside to play in the snow, and then T.D. gets the idea to make more Valentines. They go in, but accidentally leave Skits outside. The girls and T.D. start working on their Valentines, while Skits looks for attention again, Martha talks to T.D., and Truman seems dubious about the whole thing. Then, Carolina's glitter pen goes missing and she asks T.D. if he took it. When Helen goes to look for it, Carolina sees glitter on her hand and thinks Helen took it.

While T.D. and Carolina go to look for the glitter pen in the kitchen and Helen searches upstairs, Truman goes to start on his Valentine, but he seems worried. He eventually admits to Helen that he's afraid of craft because in kindergarten, he accidentally glued himself to the table, and he's afraid he'll glue the scissors to his head. Helen tells him to just draw something.

Meanwhile, T.D. and Carolina are still searching for her glitter pen. However, when Helen comes up to tell them she couldn't find another one, they try to pretend they were just playing with Skits. When she leaves, Carolina still thinks Helen is the thief, but T.D. thinks that Helen would never steal anything. Then, he sees his notebook gone, and Helen reappears and tells them that her fabric is gone.

The kids and Martha start searching around, except for Truman, who just writes. Then, Skits comes up and claims (in barks) that he has something to show his friends, but it turns out that he just wants the kids to throw more snowballs. They go back inside to find out that Carolina had written a Valentine that read, "You stole my heart and T.D.'s notebook and Carolina's glitter pen and Helen's fabric." She explains that it was in order to make the thief confess. T.D. bars everyone from leaving the room, but Carolina feels that that's her job, since she thinks he might be the thief. She considers telling everyone's parents, but then Martha reveals that she knows who the thief is.

She takes everyone into the living room and interrogates them. Truman reveals that he did look through T.D.'s notebook for inspiration to help him overcome his fears, but that he didn't take it. Martha has Truman lift the couch cushion, which he does, revealing the art supplies. Then, Martha reveals that it was Skits who stole the art supplies, since he hides things there, T.D.'s notebook has his slobber on it, and he did it for attention. The kids reassure Skits that they aren't mad, and they all go outside to play.

This episode provides examples of

  • Absurd Phobia: Justified. Truman is afraid of doing crafts because of a bad experience, specifically he glued himself to a table in kindergarten.
  • Amusing Injuries: T.D. bumps his head on the kitchen table.
  • Asleep in Class: Discussed in the flashback, when Truman's kindergarten teacher sees him with his head accidentally glued to the table and assumes he's fallen asleep.
  • Big "SHUT UP!": Martha yells, "Quiet!" to get the kids' attention.
  • Book Dumb: When Carolina asks T.D. if his homework was stolen, he replies, "No; important stuff!".
  • Bread, Eggs, Milk, Squick: In T.D.'s notebook, he apparently has his sketches for his Valentines, his pirate name ideas... and his old gum.
  • Character Name and the Noun Phrase: The title follows the "[name] and the [phrase]" format.
  • Continuity Nod: Skits's affinity for flying items mentioned in "Martha and Skits" is brought back in this episode, where he wants the kids to throw him snowballs.
  • Death Glare:
    • Carolina frowns at Helen when she thinks she's looking at her Valentine.
    • Carolina and T.D. scowl at each other when she thinks he stole her glitter pen.
  • Flashback: We see a scene from the past revealing how Truman became afraid of doing crafts.
  • Lame Pun Reaction: Downplayed for the kids' dislike of the "You mean a great dill to me" cards with the picture of the pickle. They mainly just find them boring.
  • Loud Gulp: Truman gulps when Carolina mentions possibly ratting on him and the others to their parents.
  • Mistaken for Thief:
    • Carolina thinks T.D., then Helen, took her glitter pen when it goes missing.
    • Later, she wonders if T.D. stole the pen, along with Helen's fabric, although that wouldn't make much sense, since his notebook went missing too.
    • When Truman becomes nervous at the idea of his parents finding out about the art supplies, Carolina wonders if he stole them, and so does T.D. when Truman reveals that he looked through T.D.'s notebook.
  • Mystery Episode: The episode focuses on Helen, Martha, Carolina, T.D., and Truman investigating why their art supplies are going missing.
  • Only One Finds It Fun: Martha is the only one who likes Carolina's singing Valentine.
  • The Perfectionist: Subverted. Truman is nervous about making a Valentine and initially he claims that he's worried it'll turn out imperfectly, but then he reveals that it's because gluing himself to a table by mistake in kindergarten has left him scared of crafts.
  • Platonic Valentine: Invoked. Helen's classmates had to give everyone a Valentine regardless of their feelings. Also, some of the kids sent Valentines to Helen's dogs.
  • Possession Proves Guilt: When Carolina sees Helen with glitter on her hand, she thinks that Helen took her glitter pen.
  • Pun: Helen's Valentines were shaped like a pickle and read, "You mean a great dill to me."
  • Red Herring: Truman is seen eyeing T.D.'s notebook just before it goes missing, he doesn't join in when the other kids investigate, he seems nervous when Carolina thinks of telling his and the others' parents, he was the only human not in the kitchen when the notebook went missing, he's afraid of crafts, and he even admits to having looked through the notebook. Despite all this, however, he's not the thief, Skits is.
  • Same Clothes, Different Year: Truman still wore the same outfit in kindergarten.
  • Sticky Situation: In kindergarten, Truman accidentally glued his head to a table.
  • Stock Animal Diet: T.D. makes a Valentine for Martha in the shape of a bone.
  • Valentine's Day Episode: This episode takes place on Valentine's Day and everyone is making cards.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: We never find out if the Valentines get finished, or if Truman overcomes his fears about crafts.
