Recap / Lucifer (2016) S04E09 "Save Lucifer"

Go To

Lucifer's so-called epiphany has Chloe worried but it's his physical transformation that is really freaking her out. Meanwhile, a reluctant Maze tries to help Eve win Lucifer back. The crew attempt to track down an escaped realtor found standing over the dead body of her twin sister.

Tropes present in the episode include:

  • Actually Pretty Funny: Dan's observation that he's never seen Maze look at someone like she wasn't thinking of stabbing them gets a smile and a small laugh out of her.
  • All Love Is Unrequited: Maze comes to the conclusion that she's in love with Eve, but unfortunately all of her attempts fall on deaf ears because Eve herself has a case of unrequited love towards Lucifer.
  • Brutally Honest: A frustrated Maze tells Eve that Lucifer doesn't love her and she has to accept that. Just like how Maze has to accept that Eve will never love her.
  • Call-Forward: Amenadiel reacts very strongly and very negatively to the suggestion that the baby be named Michael. When the archangel Michael shows up in Season 5, it's easy to see why.
  • Comically Missing the Point: Lucifer told Eve in the previous episode that one of the reasons he wanted to break up was so that she could be herself instead of trying to be who she thought he wanted. In this episode she goes to the extent of trying to turn herself into a copy of Chloe to lure him back. She then manages to spectacularly miss the point of Maze singing to her, and interpret it as a prompt to make a "grand gesture" to Lucifer.
  • Dead Guy Junior: Linda and Amenadiel decide to name their baby Charlie in honor of the late Charlotte Richards.
  • Easily Forgiven: A case that Dan doesn't quite appreciate, given that his actions nearly got his daughter killed. Still, Ella forgives him and even wipes the evidence.
  • Forgiveness: Lucifer forgiving himself turns out to be the key in undoing his transformation.
  • Girl on Girl Is Hot: The accountant isn't happy about being Bound and Gagged, until Eve starts making out with Maze in front of him to make Lucifer jealous.
  • Graceful Loser: Once Ella reveals that she knows about Dan tipping Tiernan off, Dan doesn't resist at all and even tells her to turn him in.
  • Heel Realization: Dan finally comes to the conclusion that whilst he does blame Lucifer for Charlotte's death, he is not to blame.
  • Insane Troll Logic: Eve tries to come up with ridiculous ways to make the prophecy untrue.
  • Internal Reveal: Ella finds out that Dan was the one responsible for tipping Tiernan off.
  • It's All My Fault: Subverted. Dan blames himself for what happened to Charlotte, but knows that neither he nor Lucifer are responsible. But it doesn't make it any less painful.
  • Masquerade Ball: The sting operation takes place during a masquerade party at Lux, which allows Lucifer to hide his demonic attributes under a Devil mask.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Beth, for murdering her sister Megan.
  • No Celebrities Were Harmed: This episode features celebrity realtors known for their "twin schtick," complete with a lesser-known third sibling... sound familiar?
  • Pop-Culture Pun Episode Title: The title of the episode is a reference to the "#SaveLucifer" campaign on Twitter when the show was canceled.
  • Power Incontinence: Lucifer's epiphany that he hates himself causes him to slowly but gradually transform into his devil form, unwillingly. Later in the episode this even amps up his power to draw out people's desires, as he accidentally hypnotizes an entire room while he's wearing a mask that conceals his face.
  • Sanity Slippage: When Beth lost the money trying to start her own business, Megan, the only sister who had faith in her, said that Moira was right about Beth being a screw-up. Beth suddenly snapped and killed Megan without even realizing it until it was too late.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Maze ups and leaves Eve with Kinley, mostly because she got a text that Linda's water broke.
  • Shout-Out: Linda's name for her baby nephilim was "Jack", like the nephilim featured in the final few seasons of Supernatural. Similarly, the archangel Michael was featured as a recurring antagonist on that show, and his name was rejected for the baby by Amenadiel.
  • Tempting Fate: Lucifer remarks how evil won't be released, seconds before a demon possesses Kinley's body.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: In killing Kinley in an attempt to get Lucifer back, Eve fulfills the final part of the prophecy.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Dan calls out Ella for not turning him in for tipping off Tiernan, saying that he deserved it. Ella didn't turn him in because she cares about Dan and knows that he's in a lot of pain.
