Recap / Lucifer (2016) S03E01 "They're Back, Aren't They?"

Go To

Lucifer has his wings back. And, apparently, he's also lost his Devil face. Oh, and there's a strange new threat in town: the Sinner Man.

Tropes present in this episode include:

  • Call-Back:
    • The armored truck robber that Lucifer encounters in the desert is the same guy who tried to rob a bank in the Season Two premiere.
    • Pierce mentions some of the previous cases Chloe, Lucifer, and Dan worked on; he's not trying to compliment them.
  • Clingy Costume: Assuming wings can count as a "costume". Lucifer cuts his newly-acquired wings, but they grow back again.
  • The Comically Serious: Pierce can trade quips with Lucifer on equal grounds and gracefully admits defeat in their verbal sparring.
  • Conflict Ball: Chloe's holding it, as usual. Despite supposedly believing Lucifer never lies, she dismisses his claims that he was kidnapped and woke up in the desert as an elaborate "distraction" to not talk about the message he left her... despite the fact that for that to work he'd have to be lying about being kidnapped.
  • Eating the Eye Candy: Ella is quite impressed by Amenadiel's physique; she just can't stop squeezing his muscles.
Ella: (queezing Amenadiel's bicep) Now we know who carries the guns in the family.
  • Establishing Character Moment: Lt Pierce's introduction has him belittling his new subordinates.
  • Funny Background Event: When Ella meets Amenadiel for the first time, just watch Lucifer's ever-changing expressions in the background...
  • Heroic Willpower: Amenadiel says that his Time Master powers aren't really back; he could only use them once, to save Linda, and at great personal strain.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: Sam who worked for the Sinnerman is found impaled on a metal bar at the end.
  • Insult Backfire: Lt Pierce calls Lucifer narcissistic and hedonistic. He takes it as a compliment.
  • Jerkass: Lt Marcus Pierce casually dismisses all of his coworkers who gathered to welcome him.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: On the other hand, Pierce is right about Dan getting off easily for having been a Corrupt Cop.
  • Irony: Amenadiel, who has pledged himself to following God's will once again, wants his wings and angelic powers back but they're denied to him. Lucifer, who resents their Father and wants nothing to do with Him, gets his wings back, along perhaps with a chance at redemption.
  • Malicious Misnaming: The first time Pierce gets Dan's name wrong, it's an accident. The second time it isn't. He does, however, use the correct name when they're working a sting operation, meaning he knows when it's time to be serious.
  • Nightmare Face: Lucifer loses his; it probably goes hand-in-hand with the new wings.
  • Slut-Shaming: Lt Pierce refuses to have physical contacts with Lucifer because of the latter's promiscuity.
  • Touché: After a verbal pissing contest between Lucifer and Pierce concerning the size of Lucifer's file relevant to the size of Pierce's johnson, Lucifer says that he doesn't need a file to ascertain that Pierce hasn't gotten so much as a snog recently.
    Pierce: ...Accurate.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: The Sinnerman had Sam killed.
