Recap / I Carly S 03 Ep 18 I Beat The Heat

Go To

A heatwave strikes Seattle and the power goes out in the Shay's apartment, so Spencer hooks up a Norwegian air conditioner and power generator to help Carly, Sam and Freddie get through. But since the apartment is now the only place in Seattle with power and air conditioning, it ends up attracting hundreds of citizens who also want to get out of the heat.

Tropes:

  • Almost Kiss: Griffin tries to smooch Carly mid-conversation, but she stops him.
  • Bottle Episode: The entire episode is set in the Shay's apartment.
  • Breaking Old Trends: This is the first episode in the series to not show an iCarly webcast, but it was mentioned repeatedly.
  • The Bus Came Back: Carly's ex-boyfriend Griffin is among those who end up in the apartment.
  • Captain Obvious: At the beginning of the episode, Carly is exhausted by the heat and goes to the room temperature device, and Freddie tells her to make the room cooler. This causes Carly to turn around and give him a very Disapproving Look.
  • Continuity Cavalcade: Because the apartment residents stay in the Shay residence for the cooling, several familiar faces show up...
    • Carly's old boyfriend, Griffin, from "iDate a Bad Boy".
    • Lewbert and Mrs. Benson are uncomfortable from their break-up in "iHurt Lewbert".
    • Chuck mentions that he got a lot of math from Camp Add-Em-Up.
    • Dr. Dresdin, Spencer's doctor from "iFight Shelby Marx" who prescribed him pills that led to many side-effects.
  • Elderly Ailment Rambling: A Grumpy Old Man who annoys Carly tells her unprompted that he suffers from angina.
  • Groin Attack: Chuck pretends that there is a fly on Spencer's zipper at one point, which gives him an excuse to whack Spencer's crotch with a rolled-up magazine. For Spencer, who was trying to be calm in order to impress Chuck's sister, this ends up being his Rage Breaking Point, and he starts yelling insults at Chuck.
  • Heat Wave: What sets up the episode's plot.
  • Jerkass Has a Point:
    • As paranoid and pushy as Mrs. Benson can be, she is totally correct in pointing out how a massive heat wave is very fatal to elderly people. And since the Shay apartment room is the only place in all of Seattle to still have powered air, she is justified in bringing some elderlies over to protect them.
    • Lewbert, while still his intolerable and rude self, correctly points out using the generator inside is a safety hazard because it can fill the building with carbon monoxide.
  • Literal Soapbox Speech: Carly stands on the kitchen counter to get everyone's attention and give a Rousing Speech that they should appreciate each other in the one working and air-conditioned apartment.
  • Rhymes on a Dime: "When temperatures get too high, the elderly will start to die!"
  • Running Gag:
    • People entering the apartment.
    • The old man with angina.
    • Carly trying to protect her project.
  • "Shaggy Dog" Story: Carly has been trying to make sure that her project for environmental class, a model of a city that is environment-friendly, is not destroyed by the other residents in the heat wave. After a few close calls, she feels relieved when it stays intact in one piece. But then Freddie gets lemon juice in Sabrina's eye, and in her agony, she accidentally steps all over Carly's project, ruining it.
  • Skewed Priorities: Griffin is more concerned about using the cool air to preserve his pee wee babies than stopping people from dying of heat stroke. Sam is so infuriated by this that she throws one of them onto the couch, which is then sat on by an elderly.
  • Statuesque Stunner: Freddie’s online friend, Sabrina, turns out to be this. Deconstructed when her unusual height makes Freddie uncomfortable and he attempts to make himself seem taller than her.
  • The Thing That Would Not Leave: All the people that show up at the Shay's apartment, given that it is the only place in Seattle with power and air conditioning. It causes trouble for the iCarlys in multiple places, especially interfering with her science project.
  • Visual Pun: Carly and Spencer's apartment number is 8-C and their apartment in all of Seattle is the only one left with a working "AC" (air conditioner).
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: The Shay's apartment becoming the only building in Seattle with power and air conditioning causes almost everyone in town to show up and crowd the whole place.
