Recap / iCarly S03E17 iPsycho

Go To

iPsycho is the 17th episode in the 3rd season of iCarly.

While preparing for an appearance at a convention called Webicon, Carly, Sam and Freddie decide to visit a lonely fan on her 16th birthday to help her regain her popularity. But the fan turns out to be a psychopath and refuses to let the trio leave, so they must take action.

Meanwhile, Spencer watches Gibby and they go camping in the apartment.

Tropes:

  • Bad "Bad Acting": The iCarlys' coded SOS for Gibby disguised as a "happy birthday" video shows them speaking rather stilted and unnatural-like, though Nora doesn't catch on.
  • Big Damn Heroes: When Gibby gets a coded message from the iCarly trio that they are trapped in Nora's basement, he travels all the way to her house to rescue them. He busts down the door, fights Nora to the point of tumbling down the stairs, and eventually beats her. Yes, Guppy did release the three with the keys to the sound booth, but it was Gibby who led the rescue.
  • A Birthday, Not a Break: Nora's birthday party goes terribly downhill. Even with the three iCarlys there to cheer her up, the refreshments are stale, none of her friends show up until the show broadcast, and the clown that Nora hires ends up having an aneurysm and being sent to the hospital. This all causes Nora to throw up in the fireplace. It isn't until the iCarlys take pity on her and do a live show at her house that people come over there to celebrate with her and turn her day around.
  • Breaking Old Trends: This is the first Extra-Long Episode that isn't five syllables long.
  • Call-Back: To "iFix a Pop Star". When Gibby asks his mother if she wants to see Spencer, she replies with a Big "NO!". This shows that she is still bent up over their freaky break up.
  • Camping Episode: The subplot has Gibby camping with Spencer in the apartment.
  • Celebration Miscalculation: The iCarlys send a coded "happy birthday" message for Gibby, even though his birthday was five months ago. The way to solve the message? Read every fourth word.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: When Gibby arrived to fight Nora, he brought his younger brother Guppy along, who then helps free the iCarly trio.
  • Dangerous 16th Birthday: The iCarlys visit Nora on her 16th birthday to help her party go without a hitch; too bad they didn't realize she has no intention of letting them leave.
  • Depraved Bisexual: Played disturbingly straight. In excitement over her party going well, Nora spontaneously kisses one of the female guests. The show is not very ambiguous about this moment being meant as Foreshadowing that she is unhinged.
  • "Eureka!" Moment: Upon listening to the coded birthday SOS message from the iCarlys, Gibby has this when he deduces the key to decoding the message is to listen to every fourth word.
  • Foreshadowing: The scene where Nora unexpectedly kisses the popular girl without her knowing serves as a hint toward her true Ax-Crazy nature.
  • Get Out!: When Gibby knocks down the locked door, Nora freaks and tells him to get out of her house. Gibby doesn't obey for a second.
  • I Never Said It Was Poison: When Gibby arrives at Nora’s place, wondering if the iCarly trio are here, Nora replies that they are not in her basement. Gibby, now more suspicious than ever, replies that he never said ANYTHING about her basement.
  • Let's Get Dangerous!: Gibby manages to fight off Nora long enough for Guppy to free the iCarly trio from the prison has them trapped in.
  • Loony Fan: Nora Dershlit is so crazy over iCarly she refuses to let Carly, Sam and Freddie out of her basement because she needs them to be popular.
  • Plot Hole: Carly was revealed to be claustrophobic in "iSpace Out", and for some reason she did not freak out when trapped in Nora's recording booth.
  • Punctuated! For! Emphasis!: "Every fourth!" "Word!" It's how to solve the coded SOS message.
  • Shout-Out: When Nora is nervous after she lets slip that she is holding the trio captive, she tells Gibby "Nobody sees the Wizard!"
  • Sympathy for the Devil: When the iCarly gang are back at the Shay apartment from Nora's house, Carly suggests that they shouldn't have called the cops on Nora and gotten her arrested. When asked why, Carly points out she was lonely and just wanted friends.
  • Unplanned Staycation: Gibby finds out he's now too old to go summer camp, which disappoints him since he looked forward to it every year. In an effort to cheer him up, Spencer invites him to "Camp Spencer" in his apartment, with the two of them setting up a tent and roasting marshmallows in the living room.
