Recap / Hamster & Gretel S1E28 "For Whom the Belle Trolls"

Go To

A social media influencer named Belle is ruining the reputation of Hamster and Gretel by spreading lies and editing video footage for clout, claiming they have become delinquents. With the whole town seemingly turned against the heroes overnight, Hamster, Gretel, Kevin, Fred and Bailey try their hardest to stop Belle's smear campaign.

Tropes:

  • Armor-Piercing Question: Belle already had counters for every claim the heroes have, but the one where they really can't come up with a rebuttal for is her asking if they resisted arrest earlier, complete with unedited footage of them doing so. By then, they were ready to turn themselves in until their fan club arrived.
  • Attention Whore: Belle's song explains that she had tried other things to become internet famous (make-up tutorials, livestreams, fashion vlogs, movie reviews, editorials, etc.) but didn't get any sort of breakthrough in views until she decided to smear Hamster and Gretel's reputation.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Just as Hamster, Gretel and Kevin are about to be taken away by the police, Bailey shows up along with a huge number of fans still loyal to the superhero duo and exposes Belle for her fake videos.
  • Big "NO!": Belle has this when she lost all her followers when her videos were exposed.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Belle, natch. Sweet and innocent on the outside, but willing to ruin the reputation of two superheroes (to the point of getting them arrested for crimes they didn't commit!) just for the sake of gaining views, likes and subscribers.
  • Break the Cutie: Poor Gretel gets hit with this hard during the interview where Belle manipulates her words to the point all she can do is just turn herself in. Thankfully Bailey turns this around.
  • Earn Your Happy Ending: After Bailey exposes Belle for spreading lies about Hamster and Gretel, the people all around the world started to like Hamster and Gretel again.
  • Easily Condemned: The public instantly turns on Hamster and Gretel after watching Belle's videos, even destroying merchandise based on them.
  • "Eureka!" Moment: When Fred is unable to access the unedited footage because of Belle's multiple encrypted passwords to her channel, she comments that it would take too long unless they have "a thousand people working together." This inspires Bailey to realize she's the president of the Hamster and Gretel Fan Club and none of them fell for Belle's videos, and begins calling up every member to help them.
  • Hate Sink: There are a lot of reasons for the viewers to hate Belle. She frames Hamster and Gretel by making fake videos of the duo committing crimes and wants them arrested.
  • Hero with Bad Publicity: Hamster and Gretel suffer from this big time in this episode.
  • Humiliation Conga: When Bailey and the remaining Hamster & Gretel fans arrive, they expose Belle by showing the original, unedited footage, causing her to lose nearly all of her followers. Then, she gets arrested... because she's an unlicensed cosmetologist.
  • Idiot Ball: Nobody in the manipulated videos besides Hamster and Gretel comes forward to explain what really happened.
  • Ironic Echo: The videos Belle presents to Hamster and Gretel show the angry townsfolk chanting, "Who do we hate? Hamster and Gretel! How much do we hate 'em? A lot!" When Bailey arrives with the fan club to prove their innocence, the fan club chants the exact opposite: "Who do we love? Hamster and Gretel! How much do we love 'em? A lot!"
  • Justice by Other Legal Means: Because slander is a civil matter and not a federal crime, it's revealed at the last minute that Belle has also been working as a cosmetologist without a license so she can be arrested for that.
  • Karma Houdini: The bank robber that the police were going to arrest was let off the hook so the police can arrest Gretel and Hamster.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Belle got her just desserts for falsely accusing Gretel and Hamster as frauds, convincing the viewers to hate the superhero duo, forcing Gretel to accept defeat after seeing her resist arrest, and for being an unlicensed cosmetologist, when Bailey and the fan club hack into her channel and find the original, unedited footage of the heroes, exposing her lies and losing all her followers.
  • Manipulative Editing: Belle's MO is to record footage of Hamster and Gretel doing good deeds as usual, then make it appear as if Hamster and Gretel are doing the exact opposite, no matter how cheap it looks. This includes reversing the footage, to sentence mixing.
  • Near-Villain Victory: Belle came the closest to having Hamster and Gretel arrested and their reputation ruined, but then Bailey and their fan club arrive to prove their innocence last-minute. Had they not arrived with the unedited videos when they did, Belle would've won.
  • Only Sane Man: Outside of Kevin, Fred, and obviously Hamster and Gretel, Bailey and the rest of the Hamster and Gretel fanclub are the only people who don't fall for Belle's videos slandering their heroes.
  • Pie in the Face: The episode starts with a baker villain named Ernie who attacks the town with his underselling "divorce cakes", and some of them do get thrown into other people's faces.
  • Please Subscribe to Our Channel: All of Belle's videos end with her telling the audience "Like and subscribe!"
  • Police Are Useless: Bailey, accompanied by Fred, goes to the police station to report Belle's obviously edited videos for the sake of clearing Hamster and Gretel's name. The police officers see the footage and take it as a report of Hamster and Gretel doing serious crimes instead, leading them to leave the station to arrest the two. Even worse, they let an actual criminal go, as if arresting Hamster and Gretel is a higher priority.
  • Quote Mine: Kevin films a video of Hamster and Gretel admitting Belle's manipulation of their videos to make it look like they are hurting people; however, Belle splices together parts of the video so it's like they are admitting it in addition to insulting her.
Gretel: (in original video:) A social media star named Belle is editing videos so it looks like we are doing ugly, awful things, and that Hamster and I are hurting people. We are not. She's just being a troll. For views.
Gretel: (in altered video:) Hamster and I are hurting people — for views. Belle — looks like — a — ugly — troll.
  • Rhetorical Question Blunder: While grilling Hamster and Gretel, Belle asks them how they sleep at night. See right below for Hamster's reply.
  • Shown Their Work: Hamster mentions he's nocturnal, which is true for hamsters.
  • Stalker Shot: When Hamster and Gretel help an old lady who dropped all her groceries (and Kevin warns the oncoming traffic to give room), the camera zooms out to reveal Belle filming them.
  • Undying Loyalty: Bailey and the rest of the Hamster and Gretel fanclub (which she's president of) are the only ones who believe Hamster and Gretel are innocent. Bailey in particular does whatever it takes to clear their name.
  • Villain Song: Belle gets one, called "Tearing You Down".
  • Villain with Good Publicity: Belle is well-liked for her videos by the public after she turns everyone against Hamster & Gretel.
  • We Will Not Use Photoshop in the Future: Belle's edits are so obvious and fake, but nearly every citizen (except Bailey and the fan club) falls for it anyway.
  • You Have GOT to Be Kidding Me!: Gretel has this reaction when the cops ignore a burglar in favor of arresting her, even letting him keep the cash he stole.
