The group goes to Yunping City, where a certain landmark catches the protagonists' attention. Later, Wei Wuxian is in for a ride when Lan Wangji has a drink...

  • Accidental Misnaming: Wei Wuxian is unamused when the inn server incorrectly refers to the famous Yiling Patriarch as Wei Wuqian, especially since Wuqian means "no money".
  • Adaptational Angst Upgrade: Nothing is shown of Lan Wangji in between falling asleep and (drunkenly) interrupting Wei Wuxian and Wen Ning's conversations in the novel. This episode, however, shows him waking up shaken from a nightmare about Wei Wuxian, implying that the latter's downfall has been haunting him over the years.
  • Adaptational Early Appearance: The protagonists begin to investigate Yunping City a lot earlier than in the novel thanks to the cat corpse incidents being related.
  • Adaptational Late Appearance: The scene of the kids re-enacting the Sunshot Campaign originally takes place prior to the events of Yi City in the novel. Both versions nevertheless emphasise Wei Wuxian's malicious reputation is as the Yiling Patriarch and how he can instantly find comfort in Lan Wangji.
  • Adaptational Nice Guy: Although still evidently irritated with Wen Ning, the drunk Lan Wangji doesn't treat him as roughly as he does in either confrontations in the novel. He merely gives him a light shove and a glare (although Wei Wuxian has to hold him back before he can do anything else), instead of slapping him multiple times while telling him to go away or kicking him like in the original.
  • Adaptation Distillation: Lan Wangji gets drunk twice in the Yi City arc in the novel, before and after the confrontation with Xue Yang. This episode combines the two instances into one to get the Yi City arc out of the way first, without sacrificing the drunk shenanigans.
  • Adaptation Expansion:
    • The junior disciples investigating the cat corpse mystery is extended, with the gang going to Yunping City because the juniors had found corpses around Guanyin Temple there too.
    • The episode adds a subplot of the protagonists trying to track down the mysterious party that's been tracking their movements and luring them to recent incidents.
  • Alcohol Hic: Lan Wangji of all people. He's drunk for a third of the episode and burps at one point, and during a serious moment too.
  • Can't Hold His Liquor: Lan Wangji falls asleep and wakes up drunk after just one cup of wine, to Wei Wuxian's bemusement.
  • Catapult Nightmare: Lan Wangji awakens sitting right up in a panicked state, having just had a Flashback Nightmare of Wei Wuxian in what looked to be a grim situation during his Yiling Patriarch days.
  • Comforting Comforter: Wei Wuxian puts the (drunk and) sleeping Lan Wangji to bed, which includes gently covering him up with a blanket.
  • Composite Character: The waiter serving the protagonists at the inn in Yunping City has lines from both the original Yunping City lady innkeeper in the novel and the tavern waiter the protagonists talked to during their unadapted travels in Yueyang. In addition to explaining the deal behind Guanyin Temple (original Yunping innkeeper), he's also the one who challenges the protagonists to drink the wine without getting drunk and takes the Lan surname (tavern waiter).
  • Continuity Nod: When drunkenly trying to appeal to Wei Wuxian, two of the items Lan Wangji pulls out from his sleeve are a rattle drum and another bamboo flute, which were both seen in the previous season.
  • Due to the Dead: Paying respects to the dead becomes a minor topic in this episode.
    • The junior disciples show their kind and sentimental side by insisting on burning joss paper and lighting a lantern for A-Qing and Xiao Xingchen, overwhelmed by their tragic deaths and good deeds. They refuse to believe Wei Wuxian when he tells them that it's pointless since the dead can't receive joss paper.
    • Wei Wuxian is unpleased when he's told that no one would burn paper for him if he was dead. When finding out not even Lan Wangji burned any for him, he assumes it's because his companion simply didn't care enough; however, later when a drunk Lan Wangji refuses to give him any joss paper because "that's for the deceased, [he is] not", Wei Wuxian realizes it's because he chose to honour him by keeping him alive in his memories and not treat him as dead.
  • Dramatic Shattering: A drink is dramatically thrown and shattered on the ground while the junior disciples have dinner. It turns out to have been Jin Ling, who's furious that Lan Sizhui would even suggest that Wei Wuxian was not evil.
  • Drunken Glow: Lan Wangji's ears turn bright red after he drinks his wine, and then immediately falls asleep drunk. The red glow is gone when he wakes up, but he's yet to sober up.
  • Eye Take: Lan Jingyi's eyes widen in comedic horror when he watches Wei Wuxian casually rest his arm on Lan Wangji's shoulder and pat his chest, unpleased by the possibility of his mentor gifting Little Apple to an infamous lunatic actually being true.
  • Flashback Echo: During the chase scene on the rooftop, it transitions in and out of a flashback of Lan Wangji chasing Wei Wuxian in a similar manner during their Cloud Recess days. Unlike back then, however, the two are on better terms in the present and the chase is more playful.
  • Hammerspace: Qiankun sleeves have the same function to qiankun bag and so can hold more than it looks. Lan Wangji demonstrate this by pulling out more items than one would expect from his sleeve — a bamboo flute, a flower, a toy, a whole jar of wine, paper...
  • Happy Flashback: After overhearing Jin Ling spew out his hatred for Wei Wuxian and Wen Ning for causing his parents' deaths, the latter lowers his head in guilt and thinks back to when Jiang Yanli offered him a bowl of her soup which he later gave to Wen Yuan, showing both a happier time with his family before the tragedies and the act of kindness Jin Ling's mother showed him.
  • How Many Fingers?: To check how sober he is, Wei Wuxian asks Lan Wangji how many fingers he's holding up. The latter responds by holding both fingers with his hands.
  • Inelegant Blubbering: Ouyang Zizhen and especially Lan Jingyi are loudly and shamelessly sobbing their hearts out when paying their respects to A-Qing and Xiao Xingchen, the two victims of the tragic backstory with Xue Yang.
  • Indirect Kiss: The kiss between the two protagonists in the novel couldn't be shown due to censorship, so the donghua gets around this by showing Wei Wuxian and Lan Wanji drinking from the same wine jar.
  • Intoxication Ensues: While Lan Wangji does agree to have a drink at the beginning, he and Wei Wuxian completely forget about it when he chokes on a chilli pepper and downs his cup of wine. He proceeds to fall into a drunken sleep and isn't yet sober when he wakes up.
  • Lost in Translation: Those unfamiliar with Chinese will likely think Wei Wuxian is simply annoyed at his name getting mispronounced, with the lack of translation notes failing to inform international audiences that Wuqian also means "no money".
  • No, You: When Jin Ling mutters over how dumb Little Apple is, Lan Jingyi mistakes it as a insult towards himself and snaps that it's Jin Ling who's dumb.
  • Out-of-Character Alert: Wei Wuxian is shocked to see the respectful and proper Lan Wangji not only walk out with his boots on the wrong feet but also push Wen Ning in a childish manner. That's how he's able to quickly deduce that his companion isn't sober.
  • Quizzical Tilt: The drunk Lan Wangji slightly tilts his head in confusion whenever he doesn't understand Wei Wuxian's words nor actions.
  • Reaction Shot: When Wei Wuxian casually lies to the waiter that his surname is Lan, The Stoic Lan Wangji is shown to be thrown completely off guard.
  • Tamer and Chaster: The more intimate parts of the drunk scenes are toned down to the two playfully chasing each other in the roofs and doing an indirect kiss compared to the novel, where the drunk shenanigans ends with them sharing a bed (for the first drunk scene) and playing hide and seek before kissing each other (for the second drunk scene).
  • Unreveal Angle: The end of the episode finally shows the mysterious person that's been luring the protagonists to recent incidents onscreen, but the paper they're holding covers their face in one shot and the next shot only shows the figure from behind while sitting on a chair.
