Recap / Fosters Home For Imaginary Friends S 5 E 11 Better Off Ed

Go To

The eleventh episode of the fifth season of Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends.

Eduardo lies to the baby friends in the nursery about how he went on the exciting adventures that Bloo really went on while Bloo was a cowardly crybaby. Meanwhile, Bloo plans a house-wide indoor paintball tournament when Frankie and Herriman leave Foster's to attend a home improvement seminar. When one friend, Scrappy, gets to move to a new room, Eduardo is worried that Scrappy will find out the truth about him and Bloo.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Accidental Misnaming: When Bloo comes to Eduardo and Jackie Khones, he asks them if he's seen Scrappy, whom he refers to as "Scruffy".
  • Accidental Public Confession: After Eduardo tells the baby friends the truth, namely that he's been stealing Bloo's thunder, Bloo asks Eduardo whose idea was it to come up with the paintball tournament in the first place. Eduardo tells Bloo "You.", and upon hearing this, Bloo boasts this fact to the baby friends. Unfortunately for him, Frankie and Mr. Herriman have returned early and heard the whole thing.
  • The Ageless: As seen with longtime imaginary friends like Uncle Pockets and Mr. Herriman, imaginary friends don't age no matter how much time passes. However, this concept is played with in this episode, as it features baby imaginary friends, and Scrappy moving out of the nursery is its plot point.
  • Big Stupid Doo Doo Head: When Frankie and Mr. Herriman return to Foster's early, the former takes the baby friends back to the nursery to clean them up. One friend tells Frankie "Maybe Bloo isn't a baby, but he sure is a doo-doo head!", to which Frankie tells him "I know."
  • Brick Joke: Early in the episode, Bloo manages to put Madame Foster in a coma by feeding her 47 turkey sandwiches. In The Stinger, a grandfather clock's bell wakes her up, and she shouts "Oh, poop! I slept through the whole thing! I wanted to play!"
  • Continuity Cavalcade: This episode begins with scenes remminiscent of previous episodes, such as "Cookie Dough", "Bus the Two of Us", "The Sweet Stench of Success", and "Eddie Monster", with Eduardo in Bloo's place and vice-versa. When Frankie puts Scrappy to bed, Scrappy tells her about the times Eduardo collected all the Coco cards and opened the secret door to the room that housed the Scribbles.
  • Description Cut: When Eduardo finds out that Scrappy has moved out of the nursery, he tells Frankie that he's worried that Scrappy will tell everyone about his tall tales. Frankie assures Eduardo that Scrappy would never blab his mouth off because he's too mature to do that. Cut to Scrappy telling Jackie Eduardo's tall tales.
  • Food as Bribe: When Eduardo finds out that Jackie knows about the tall tales Scrappy told him and is worried he'll tell them to Bloo, Eduardo has to make Jackie a sandwich in exchange for his silence. In the end, it is revealed that Scrappy knew the truth about Eduardo from Jackie and had to make him a sandwich in exchange for him not telling Eduardo.
  • Food Coma: When Bloo plans his paintball tournament after Frankie and Mr. Herriman leave, Wilt asks Bloo how he's going to keep Madame Foster from finding out about it. Bloo tells him that he's going to feed her 47 turkey sandwiches so that she will fall asleep.
  • Hand Gagging: When Eduardo, having found Scrappy, finds Coco, he hides him behind his back so she can't see him. Scrappy hears Coco clucking and tries to introduce himself, but Eduardo clamps his hand over Scrappy's mouth.
  • Impact Silhouette: When Eduardo runs out of the nursery, he leaves an Eduardo-shaped hole in the wall he runs through.
  • Ocular Gushers:
    • In Eduardo's story about how Bloo was afraid to get the whisbee from the Extremasaur pen, Bloo cries this way.
    • Eduardo cries this way several times. First, when he thinks about what the baby friends would say about him if they knew the truth (thankfully for him, Scrappy mistakes his crying for Bloo's), then when Bloo tries to convince him to play in the paintball tournament.
  • Paintball Episode: In this episode, Bloo plans to throw a house-wide indoor paintball tournament after getting Frankie and Mr. Herriman out of the house and Madame Foster into a turkey coma. However, none of his friends think it's a good idea. The baby friends think that Eduardo is the one starting the paintball tournament due to Eduardo telling them that.
  • Punny Title: This episode's title is a pun on the saying "Better off dead".
  • Taking the Bullet: Eduardo jumps in front of the paintball that Bloo fires at Scrappy, at which point Eduardo is eliminated from the game and confesses the truth to the baby friends.
  • Walk Through the Camera: This episode does this effect when Eduardo looks for Scrappy, only to get interrupted by Jackie.
  • You Owe Me: When Jackie manages to subdue Wilt after the latter asks Eduardo what's going on, Jackie tells Eduardo "That's gonna cost you extra mayo."
