Recap / Chainsaw Man Season 1 Episode 5

Go To

After Denji is disappointed by touching Power's breasts, Makima uses the promise of sex to get him to go after the Gun Devil, the extremely dangerous devil that killed Aki's family. Division 4 sets off to hunt after a piece of the Gun Devil, but end up trapped on a building's eighth floor.

The ending theme for this episode is "In the Backroom" by syudou.

Tropes:

  • Adaptational Early Appearance: Of a sort; in the manga version of Himeno's flashback to meeting Aki, he's introduced by an old man that is presumably Kishibe, but he looks very different than he would for the rest of the series. Here, it's very clearly Kishibe, using the finalized version of his design.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Aki's traumatic past is shown in a flashback here: Aki and his younger brother came outside to play catch, and Aki's brother goes back inside the house to get some gloves. Right after he gets inside, the entire house is destroyed by the Gun Devil, killing Aki's family.
  • Double Take: After killing a small devil on the 8th floor, Division 4 climbs up the next flight of steps. As they walk along the hallways, Arai looks back and notices they passed the same bloodstain from the previous floor.
  • Fantastic Nuke: The Gun Devil is a personification of this. When he first appeared, he killed 1.2 million people in the span of 5 minutes.
  • Heroic BSoD: Denji finally gets his dream of touching a woman’s chest and discovers Power pads her bra. This hollow experience leaves Denji in a daze for the first third of the episode complete with your classic blank eyed stare. It takes Makima seducing him to snap him out of it.
  • If It Bleeds, It Leads: Defied; Makima tells Denji that, to prevent the Gun Devil from becoming stronger, the government limits the amount of news published about gun violence, so the general population won't fear guns so much.
  • Sacred First Kiss: Arai thinks Himeno promising a kiss to whoever kills the demon is a bad thing because of this trope.
  • Snow Means Death: Downplayed because while Aki's family is killed after the fall of a huge amount of snow, the day when it happened was a sunny one.
  • Unnaturally Looping Location: The Devil Hunters get trapped in one, as the Devil they are looking for turned the 8th floor of a hotel into an impossible loop: anytime a character tries to leave the floor, they get back to where they started.
  • Wanting Is Better Than Having: Turns out that fondling Power's breasts wasn't as satisfying as Denji thought it would be.
  • Visual Innuendo: As Makima seduces Denji, there's a smear of ink on the table from the stamp he was holding.

Tropes specific to the ending credits

  • Animal Motifs: We're shown horse(-like creature)s that are each relevant to a specific member of Divison 4, minus Denji.
    • Arai: black stallion
    • Kobeni: brightly-colored plush unicorn with her butcher's knife as a horn
    • Himeno: A centaur version of herself
    • Power: headless, blood-red equine with six avian legs and spikes
    • Aki: a black horse made of guns with a head made of folded human hands
  • Early-Bird Cameo: Among the paintings, there's what appears to be one of Reze, two whole story arcs before she officially debuts.
  • Mythology Gag: In the shot of two of Makima in black and white, the Makima in white has a halo made of squiggly lines, resembling a scene later in the manga where an odd material floats above her head like a halo.
  • Pietà Plagiarism: There's a painting where Makima and Denji (in devil form) replicate the pose of Michelangelo Buonarroti's sculpture, to the point the latter is wearing rags just as Jesus is.
