Tropes:

  • Battle in the Center of the Mind: Looker fights both Khalil and Painkiller in their mind when she tries to take control of them. Though she makes them work for it, they eventually beat her.
  • The Bus Came Back: The Looker returns for the first time since Season 2, having escaped jail off-screen during the Markovian occupation.
  • Can't Kill You, Still Need You: Khalil convinces Painkiller to let the Looker live, as they still need her to bring Tobias down.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Khalil vs. Looker's goons. One of them demonstrates Super-Speed, but it doesn't help.
  • Drowning My Sorrows: Jefferson at the beginning, over losing his powers.
  • Godzilla Threshold: Due to having no other options, Jefferson asks Shakur to help him slip the Looker-Antiserum into Special Agent Mason's coffee, despite the risk of them serving between 10-20 years in jail for it. Thankfully, it works out fine.
  • Internal Reveal: Lots of them.
    • Tobias discovers that JJ is Jennifer.
    • Anissa and Jennifer tell their parents about Jennifer restoring her powers and the experiments to extract metagenes from pregnant women.
    • Jefferson learns about TC and Khalil being in contact and about the Looker being on Tobias's payroll.
    • TC finds out about Uriah's account having been hacked and he tells Jennifer about it.
    • Uriah learns about Jennifer being Lightning, shortly before dying.
    • Jefferson reveals his secret identity to Shakur.
    • Lauren learns about her work being used by Tobias for evil purposes.
    • Tobias learns about Khalil still being alive and having taken down Jesse Gentilucci. He then dispatches Ishmael to take him down.
  • It's All My Fault: Both TC and Jennifer beat themselves up over Uriah's death.
  • The Matchmaker: TC arranges a date between Uriah and Jennifer.
  • Mayor Pain: Tobias is successfully elected Mayor of Freeland.
  • Never Bring a Knife to a Gun Fight: One of Looker's mooks mocks Khalil (whom he derisively calls "boy") for doing this, as Khalil is carrying a knife he took off another mook shortly before. Khalil calmly reveals that he also has a gun. (Not that he needs it.)
  • Plea Bargain: Keith is trying to convince Lynn to take one, as he sees no chance of her getting off any easier.
  • Politically Incorrect Villain: The Looker and her mooks haven't gotten anymore PC since last time we saw her. One of the mooks repeatedly calls Khalil "boy", while Looker herself makes several cracks about turning Khalil into her house boy.
  • Power Incontinence: Jennifer's power keep going out of whack, presumably due to the emitter. This leads to her being tragically unable to save Uriah from Red.
  • The Reveal:
    • The Looker has been controlling tons of people on Tobias Whale's behalf to set the Pierces up, among them Special Agent Mason.
    • There's a vein of Prometheum running through Freeland's tunnels.
  • Shout-Out: Mason compares being mind controlled by Looker to the movie Get Out (2017).
  • Super Serum: Tobias gives Chief Lopez his Metahuman Booster, so she can safely give her officers temporary powers. It comes along with a wristband to protect them from the depowering effects of the emitter.
  • Wicked Cultured: Tobias is shown playing Symphony No. 5 in C minor on the piano at the start of the episode.
  • You Have No Idea Who You're Dealing With: Looker says as much to Khalil after he defeats her. He replies that he knows exactly who he's dealing with — Tobias.
