Finn must enter a wizarding contest to stop Ice King from winning the grand prize— a kiss from Princess Bubblegum.

Tropes

  • Big "NO!": Finn drops the biggest "No" yet. Jake says that this is the loudest he's ever heard Finn scream. It should be noted that Finn screams a lot.
  • Bowdlerise: The "never in your freaking life!" line from Peppermint Butler's song was censored in the United Kingdom.
  • Cuteness Proximity: Grandmaster Wizard is too distracted playing with his cat to notice Ice King blatantly cheating.
  • Death from Above: Rock Wizard can summon meteorites to fall on his enemies.
  • Easily-Distracted Referee: Grand Master Wizard is too distracted by playing with a cat to see Ice King cheating.
  • Effeminate Misogynistic Guy: Subverted - Finn tries to make sure Abracadaniel wins because he appears to be this, and doesn't want to kiss PB, only for him to get more confidence when he wins the contest and change his mind.
  • Elemental Rock-Paper-Scissors: The first round of Wizard Battle is for wizards with opposite-themed powers to fight it out.
  • First Kiss: This marks the first showing of Finn and Bubblegum kissing.
  • Forgot About His Powers: Being a master of ice ninjutsu, the Ice King easily could have created the nunchaku out of ice.
  • Heart Is an Awesome Power: Abracadaniel has no magic that is useful in a fight, but he makes use of his ridiculous non-combative magic to hit Ice King on the head with his own nunchakus.
  • Hollywood Tone-Deaf: Peppermint Butler sings his first and only song in the show here. His voice cracks throughout the entire song for Rule of Funny.
  • Ineffectual Death Threats: Grand Master Wizard suggests that the one-on-one wizard fights will be to the death, but many wizards appear to be still alive at the end.
  • Magic Versus Science: Science is explicitly barred from Wizard Battle.
  • Nothing Up My Sleeve: Ice King hides nunchaku in his sleeve to get an illegal advantage in Wizard Battle.
  • Offscreen Moment of Awesome: The Ice King somehow managed to survive an entire wizard battle to the death using only his nunchaku.
  • Rubber Man: How Abracadaniel survives a huge meteorite falling on him.
  • Shout-Out:
    • The subplot involving Ice King cheating refers to the stereotypical Professional Wrestling Heel, in particular his use of weapons while the referee isn't looking.
    • A number of small ones to Dungeons & Dragons. Abracadaniel's magic is referred to as "cantrips", which is D&D's term for a weak spell that typically serves as a utility, and his color-changing spell is a listed usage of the iconic cantrip, Prestidigitation. The Rock Wizard's meteor summon bears an uncanny resemblance to Meteor Swarm, and the creature that appears from a portal is very clearly a 1st Edition carrion crawler.
  • Smooch of Victory: The grand prize for Wizard Battle is "a kiss from Princess Bubblegum... on the mouth!"
  • Super-Scream: Finn manages to scream to the point where it incapacitates Abracadaniel, leaving Finn the last man standing in the Wizard Battle. He's awarded the win, but is mocked for having to resort to a Power Shriek, "the most shameful of all magic."
  • Two Men, One Dress: Finn and Jake do this to impersonate a wizard.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Bubblegum does this to Finn stating that, while she appreciates the gesture of trying to stop Ice King, it wasn't really that serious of a reason to get involved in the first place and promptly slaps him for it after kissing him.
  • Wizard Duel: The basic concept of the episode.
