- The subplot involving Ice King cheating refers to the stereotypical Professional Wrestling Heel, in particular his use of weapons while the referee isn't looking.
- A number of small ones to Dungeons & Dragons. Abracadaniel's magic is referred to as "cantrips", which is D&D's term for a weak spell that typically serves as a utility, and his color-changing spell is a listed usage of the iconic cantrip, Prestidigitation. The Rock Wizard's meteor summon bears an uncanny resemblance to Meteor Swarm, and the creature that appears from a portal is very clearly a 1st Edition carrion crawler.
- Smooch of Victory: The grand prize for Wizard Battle is "a kiss from Princess Bubblegum... on the mouth!"
- Super-Scream: Finn manages to scream to the point where it incapacitates Abracadaniel, leaving Finn the last man standing in the Wizard Battle. He's awarded the win, but is mocked for having to resort to a Power Shriek, "the most shameful of all magic."
