Overly Long Gag / SpongeBob SquarePants

Go To

Overly Long Gags in SpongeBob SquarePants.

  • Some of the lazier episodes use this trope excessively, often to the point that an episode will actually become this trope. Examples include: "Slide Whistle Stooges", "Blackjack", "Funny Pants", "A Day Without Tears", "Face Freeze!", and "Grandpappy the Pirate".
  • In "Bubblestand" when Squidward requests peace and quiet during his clarinet practice while SpongeBob is building a bubblestand, this results in SpongeBob hammering rather slowly and looking right back to Squidward's house between beats.
  • "I Was a Teenage Gary" has the squeamish SpongeBob repeatedly pull Gary away and shout "WAIT!" whenever Squidward tries to inject him with snail plasma.
  • "Squid's Day Off" has scenes where SpongeBob repeats the line "Have you finished those errands?" in part or in whole over twenty times.
  • In "Graveyard Shift", Squidward scares SpongeBob, making him scream no less than 25 times in a row, while Squidward attempts to explain himself. He goes on to laugh repeatedly when Squidward says he was joking.
  • From "The Algae's Always Greener":
SpongeBob: A customer ordered a medium soda, and I gave him a large! I GAVE HIM A LARGE! I've soiled the good Krusty Krab name! Soiled it, soiled it, soiled it, soiled it! Soiled it, soiled it, soiled it, soiled it! Soiled it...
Plankton: (poking SpongeBob) Where's the off button on this thing?
    • "Someday the Krabby Patty formula will be mine! Even if I have to come back tomorrow. And the next day. And the next day. And the next day. And the next day. And the next day. And the next day. And the next day. And the next day...."
  • "New Student Starfish" has three of them:
    • SpongeBob screaming and crying as Mrs. Puff is removing one of his Good Noodle stars.
    • SpongeBob and Patrick exchanging "I hate you" no less than about ten times during detention.
    • SpongeBob and Patrick's 30 second-long Freak Out when they see the lightbulb keeping the class pet Roger incubated go out, which culminates in them reconciling.
  • "Ugh" is just full of these:
    • Squog slipping on Gary's slime.
    • SpongeGar taking a good 30-45 seconds realizing that he can use Squog's stick to get two marshmallow-like plants out of their fire, cutting between SpongeGar's face, the stick and the fire (as well as a barbershop quartet) progressively faster until it near-reaches Epileptic Flashing Lights territory.
    • The sequence where SpongeGar, Patar and Squog are roasting various plants (and krabs.)
    • And this isn't even mentioning the second half of the SpongeBob part of the episode, the majority of it having them trying to steal the fire from each other in various ways.
  • SpongeBob repeatedly interrupting the doctor trying to remove Squidward's bandages in "The Two Faces of Squidward."
  • The episode "Keep Bikini Bottom Beautiful" has almost no gags- other than "Squidward ends up next to litter, and is sentenced to Community Service whether it's his or not." By the end, Squidward has gotten it 8 times... (He almost got it 9, even!), and one was not even for littering, but for putting a trash-absorbed SpongeBob in a trash can that isn't his. At the end of the episode, Squilliam gets CS, and even SpongeBob gets CS too.
  • "All That Glitters", where SpongeBob cries to...everything in Bikini Bottom about his broken spatula. "WAAAAAAAAAAAAAA-HHAUUUUUUUUUH!"
    • From the same episode, SpongeBob smashing piggy banks one by one to appease the salesman.
  • Similarly, "SpongeBob You're Fired" has SpongeBob crying for about a full minute after Mr. Krabs fires him. As this happens, the tears affect customers in the background.
    • This episode also has the scene where SpongeBob continually attempts to cling to Patrick's rock, to no avail.
  • In "Mrs. Puff, You're Fired", SpongeBob gets a pebble stuck in his hand while crawling, causing him to yell "OOOOW! WOOOOW!" nonstop.
  • Zooming in on the patty in "Krusty Krab Training Video" The narrator imitates a fanfare throughout, stopping to catch his breath partway.
    • And another lampshade on this: as the "How to make a Krabby Patty" part of the video it was intro-ing was about to begin it was cut off by the episode ending.
  • SpongeBob going over the activities he and Patrick have planned for the rainy day in "Pineapple Fever". Mostly, he repeats activities he's already stated.
  • SpongeBob ringing Mrs. Puff's doorbell for about 30 straight seconds in "Pet or Pests", without any dialogue. This continues even after Mrs. Puff opens it.
  • SpongeBob and Squidward clearing their throats in "Choir Boys", which happens multiple times.
  • "The Camping Episode" has this, and probably would have gone longer if Squidward hadn't stopped SpongeBob:
SpongeBob: Patrick's right Squidward, sea bears are no laughing matter. Why one time I met this guy who knew this guy who knew this guy who knew this guy who knew this guy who knew this guy who knew this guy who knew this guy who knew this guy who knew this guy who knew this guy who knew this guy who knew this guy who knew this guy who knew this guy who knew this guy who knew this guy's cousin-
    Squidward: YOU'RE RIGHT!
    • Also, the "Campfire Song" Song. Squidward doesn't bother to stop them, he just sits there with an annoyed look on his face.
    • The sea bear attack also. "That was an oval! It has to be a circle!"
  • Another example in "Dear Vikings".
Viking: This is Olaf. And this is Olaf. This is Olaf. Olaf, Olaf, Olaf, and um...
    Other Viking: Olaf.
Squidward: So, lemme guess. Your name must be...
    Viking: That's right, Gordon!
  • Also happens in "SB-129" with Squidward opening the door revealing SpongeBob asking him if he's ready to go jellyfishing with him and Patrick.
  • In "Someone's in the Kitchen With Sandy", Plankton-as-Sandy keeps flubbing at putting the top bun on the patty by barely a few inches, prompting SpongeBob to say over and over, "Ohhhh, try again."
  • "That Sinking Feeling" starts with a scene of SpongeBob and Patrick running back and forth laughing from the pineapple to the rock and back, across Squidward's yard, for almost half a minute. It stops when Squidward slams his suctions in their faces.
  • "Hide and Then What Happens?" has two:
    • The episode starts with SpongeBob greeting Patrick; after they say hi, they stare at each other for about thirty seconds occasionally blinking, before the main plot begins.
    • When Mrs. Puff refuses to help SpongeBob find Patrick, he goes into an escalating round of asking "Are you sure?", one after the other.
  • "Greasy Buffoons" has SpongeBob trying to tell the health inspector about Mr. Krabs and Plankton feeding grease to their customers, only to get interrupted before he could finish the sentence.
  • "Captain Pipsqueak" has a gag of the Robot Mantis destroying instruments that lasts for 25 seconds.
  • "Delivery to Monster Island":
    • There's a 30 second montage of SpongeBob seemingly traveling the world, only to end up right back to the Krusty Krab.
    • Plankton accidentally bites into a monster instead of a Krabby Patty... and spends 15 seconds chewing on it before he realizes.
    • The joke of SpongeBob and Plankton walking into a monster's mouth, which they mistake for a cave. It takes them 15 seconds of walking in the dark to realize it's not what they thought.
  • "FUN-Believable":
    • SpongeBob and Patrick running away, whispering, looking back, and whispering again, then coming to Rube only to run back. It takes 20 seconds.
    • Slappy's Rube Goldberg Device goes on for quite a while.
  • "Swimming Fools":
    • The episode has a joke of SpongeBob and Patrick inflating Squidward, tying him up into a pool chair, and playing with him for one and a half minutes.
    • There's a 10-second close up of Squidward screaming with a Nightmare Face.
  • In "We Heart Hoops", we get multiple cuts of Ajax looking at a hoop that's been thrown at him.
  • In "Necro Nom Nom Nom I Con", the bookstore clerk looks between two clearly distinguishable books... for a long time, and ends up picking out the wrong one. He does it again not even a minute later, even though there only is one book.
