And God Created Woman is a 1988 American romantic comedy/drama film directed by Roger Vadim. It shares its title with the 1956 French film And God Created Woman, also directed by Vadim, who promoted the 1988 version as a remake despite the finished product having little in common with the 1956 version.

Robin Shea (Rebecca De Mornay) breaks out of prison and hitches a ride with James Tiernan (Frank Langella) a politician. He takes her back to prison in secret so nobody realizes she tried escaping and advises her to get married to make a good show for parole. To this end, she convinces handyman Billy Moran (Vincent Spano) to marry her. Billy wants Robin to be a stay-at-home wife, but Robin wants to focus on her dreams of a music career. She also gets romantically entangled with James, who hopes Robin's parole will become a success to further his campaign.

Tropes:

  • In Name Only: Roger Ebert quipped "Is this the first time a title has been remade, instead of a movie?" The 1956 film was about Juliette, a young woman who is judged by her community for her free-spirited, libertine ways. It was certainly not the story of a woman who breaks out of jail and goes on to form a rock band. There are some shared plot points (Juliette and Robin both choose to marry not out of love, but to get out of bad situations, with actual feelings blossoming later).
  • Just Got Out of Jail: Robin is released from jail on parole due to getting married and is told by her officer to keep her nose clean. Near the end, she comes very close to going back in due to getting caught with Billy in an act of public indecency, but she convinces James to help her by crashing his dinner with her band.
  • Making Love in All the Wrong Places: Robin and Billy have sex in an old museum that he is restoring. They get caught and photographed by a bunch of people touring the place. This gets Robin in trouble as James wants her parole revoked after seeing the pictures.
  • Marriage of Convenience: Robin's best bet to get out of jail is to get married, so she offers Billy $5000 to marry her. He takes it up, fully knowing what her motivations are, thinking he can straighten her up and hoping the two can have a serious relationship eventually.
  • Naked First Impression: Billy first meets Robin when she is trying to go back inside the prison in secret and changing into the prisoner's uniform, so he finds her wearing nothing but shoes and socks. He helps her hide from the prison personnel and then the two have sex.
