The Coldest and the Boldest is a Rise of the Guardians Alternate Universe Fic written by fanfiction.net author Tectonicplatez.

The story is a High School AU that follows Tooth(iana), a diligent student who happens to be obsessed with teeth. She’s best friends with a Russian exchange student (North), an Australian vegetarian (Bunnymund), and a narcoleptic mute (Sandy). Tooth finds herself eyeing Jack Frost, the reserved boy who sits in the back of the class. The two become friends, but the past that Jack is trying to hide catches up to him.

The story now has a sequel named In the Depths of Winter, which is now set at “Mythos University”. The story is in progress and is notably Darker and Edgier compared to its predecessor.

  • All of the Other Reindeer
    • Tooth only has four friends, all of them guys. Turns out, having a name as odd as “Toothiana”, obsessing over teeth, and a pretty outlandish appearance drives people off.
    • Jack, too, but to be fair, it’s because he pushes people away.
  • All Love Is Unrequited: Bunnymnd to Tooth. He had a crush on her since the beginning of the story proper, but Tooth only ever saw him as a brother-type figure and had her eyes on Jack instead.
  • Almost Kiss: Jack and Tooth, in chapter nine. Rapunzel sure is a mood killer...
  • Alpha Bitch
    • Athena somewhat falls into this trope. She does help Tooth out with Arachne's bullying, and asks Tooth to take her spot of valedictorian, but when the charity money is stolen at the ball, she decides that since Jack's staff (the one that he lost years ago) was found at the scene, then it had to have been him, regardless of the fact that her conviction is pretty ill-judged. She also isn't above pointing out that she's on the student council, and thus is superior to the other students.
    • Arachne falls into this, too, just without the popularity. She makes Tooth's life hell for apparently no reason, even going as far as to frame her for theft.

  • Badass Bookworm: Amusingly enough for this trope, Tooth strikes Anansi with an encyclopedia when he threatens her in the library.
  • Big Damn Heroes: "Well then I guess you'll have to deal with my large, bulky, and very angry friends."
  • Brooding Boy, Gentle Girl: Jack and Tooth.
  • The Bully: Anansi, Arachne, and their group.
  • Cannot Spit It Out: Jack and Tooth both struggle to get their feelings across. Also Bunnymund to Tooth, which gives the latter the idea that they’re Just Friends.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl
    • Tooth doesn’t really like the idea of Jack liking Rapunzel. For Jack to even mention her name deflates her mood.
    • Ironically, some parts imply that Rapunzel isn't too happy when Flynn lightens up to Tooth, either.
    • Jack is a Clingy Jealous Guy. He's pretty miffed whenever Flynn gets a little too touchy with Tooth, and when Thor bluntly compliments Tooth at the Winter Ball, Jack plans to set a prank on him.
  • Completed Fic: Although it now has a sequel.
  • Cool Uncle: Uncle Moon.
  • Crossover: The story includes Disney characters such as Rapunzel and Alice Liddell, with mentions of others. Astrid and Hiccup are also mentioned, and Greek mythological figures such as Zeus and Athena also appear.
  • Crush Blush: Tooth and Jack do this a lot around each other. Unfortunately for Jack, his pale skin makes it ten times more noticeable.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: The reason that Jack is staying in Burgess with Uncle Moon. His sister, Emma, was upset that she was unable to leave the bed due to sickness on the week of Christmas, so he drove her out to see the fireworks display in town. He realized that they were going the wrong way, but when he turned the car around, another car hit them and sent the car through the safety rails and into the lake. They both made it out with hypothermia, but Emma was hospitalized. As if that alone wasn't enough, everyone was convinced that Jack had tried to purposefully kill his sister, because the other car hit and ran and their car was in the lake, so they couldn't see the damages. The news made a report without permission and made it out so that Jack had attempted to murder them both, thus causing the other students at his school to ostracize him. Some went as far as to fight him, but he retaliated enough to hospitalize them. Jack's mother, Helena, eventually decided to just send him away to Uncle Moon.
  • Distracted by the Sexy: When Jack arrives at Zeus and Poseidon's party, he gets distracted when he sees Tooth in makeup, a dress, and floral stockings. The last one particularly gets him.
  • Dude Magnet: Other than Jack, Tooth manages to catch the attention of Bunnymund, Brer Rab, Sinbad, and Thor. Even Jerkass Anansi is attracted to her and even asks her out in the epilogue.
  • Everyone Can See It: Eventually, everyone catches on to Tooth and Jack's feelings for each other.
  • High School AU: In this story, everyone is a high school student at Burgess High.
  • Hopeless Suitor
    • Bunnymund. See Did Not Get the Girl for evaluation.
    • Brer Rab, The Casanova, tries to charm Tooth to going to the winter ball with him. He's pretty shocked when she rejects him.
  • Did Not Get the Girl: Bunnymund takes Tooth's rejection a bit heavily for a while, but he seems to be over it by the end of the story. On a happier note, although he didn't get Tooth in the end, the story teases a romance between him and Alice Liddell.
  • He Is Not My Boyfriend/Like Brother and Sister: Tooth nearly says these tropes word-for-word when Anansi calls Bunnymund her boyfriend. Unfortunately, she didn't realize that Bunnymund had feelings for her.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: Bunnymund isn't happy with Tooth's rejection, but he acknowledges that she genuinely likes Jack and encourages the latter to go after her.
  • Oblivious to Love: Tooth is utterly unaware of Bunnymund’s feelings, never catching on that he was jealous of Jack. She only puts two and two together when she unintentionally rejects him in front of the others at the diner.
  • Parental Substitute: Uncle Moon cares for Jack after his accident.
  • Sadist Teacher: Mrs. Crumpbittle gets shades of this, openly insulting and humiliating her students even if they’ve done nothing wrong.
  • Shipper on Deck: Near about everyone ships Jack and Tooth together.
  • When She Smiles: Jack and Tooth both get flustered when the other smiles, usually resulting in Crush Blush.
