Fanfic / a feel of discontent

Go To

a feel of discontent (i'm finally facing it all) is a Sonic the Hedgehog Patchwork Fic written by Strange Shards that can be read in Archive of our Own and Fanfiction.net. Metal Sonic, a.k.a. "Metallic," serves as the main protagonist of the story, taking what would be Sonic's place in this timeline's version of the Sonic X series.

Features examples of:

  • Adaptational Angst Upgrade: Metallic is a roboticized version of Sonic (who would have been around 15 years old when he was roboticized). Tails is still grieving because of Sonic's "death," and Julie-Su has nightmares after events involving the Metal Virus. It only continues to get worse.

  • Adaptational Intelligence: Knuckles is a lot less gullible than his Sonic X counterpart, to the point of threatening Dr. Eggman if he doesn't leave him alone.

  • Adaptation Personality Change: Metallic, due to his amnesia and then reacquiring of a memory in which Dr. Eggman wiped his memory, is no longer as much of a ruthless killing machine and is even actively fighting against Dr. Eggman. Grandpa Thorndyke is a lot more worried about his grandson's safety (with good reason). And Chris is really into butterflies.

  • Adaptation Name Change: The X-Tornado, which has had various other designations in the Sonic X anime as well, has been renamed the "Tornado X-treme."

  • Amusing Injuries: In chapter 7, Eggman survives an explosion point blank. Later, in chapter 11 while in a fit of rage, Eggman rips out hair from his mustache.

  • Anti-Hero: Metallic, the main protagonist, is this.

  • The Atoner: Metallic is also this.

  • Are These Wires Important?: In chapter 5, Knuckles literally says "This looks important!" before ripping the power source off the jaguar robot.

  • Common Tongue: Everyone from Sonic's world so far speaks English. It's explained in chapter 15 that this is probably due to the mysterious creators Amy talks about, as it's been theorized that the creators made it so as everyone evolved, they would develop similar languages.

  • Composite Character: Metallic serves as this, as he's explicitly listed in the tags to be a roboticized Sonic and he takes what would be Sonic's place in this version of the Sonic X series.

  • Fantastic Racism: In chapter 15, it's explained that the Overlanders tried to wipe out the Mobians during the Great War. Additionally, in chapter 16 Captain Westwood makes it very clear he is not fond of Rouge.

  • Freak Out: Metallic's transformation into Metal Overlord, in which he for a time "lost his marbles," is mentioned several times. Also counts as Sanity Slippage.

  • Good Is Not Nice: Metallic may be The Atoner and somewhat soft around Chris, but he's far from nice when it comes to the people who anger him. His other allies are no exception. In chapter 11, when Tails tries to apologize for what he said to Metallic in the previous chapter, he slaps his hand away. At the end of that same chapter, Metallic throws Sonic's roboticization in Tails' face, and tells him that he doesn't need him. The next chapter does imply some wondering regret on his part, though.

  • Harmful to Minors: The first full memory Metallic regained was Dr. Eggman wiping his memory. Not to mention he's a roboticized version of Sonic, who in the anime and other Sonic the Hedgehog media is only 15 years old, meaning he was likely roboticized around that age. And not to mention it was revealed he had his vocal cords removed before being roboticized. That's not the end of it, either.

  • "It" Is Dehumanizing: Played with. For about five and a half chapters Metallic thought of himself in narration with his POV as "it," only starting to use he/him pronouns when Uncle Chuck tells him that he is alive regardless of the fact that he is a machine. This is not the only instance of this trope.

  • Meaningful Rename: Near the end of chapter 15, Chris renames Metal Sonic "Metallic."

  • Nervous Wreck: Somewhat subverted with Grandpa Thorndyke. He does worry about his grandson (with good reason), but he also helps Metal Sonic infiltrate Area 99 to rescue Cream and Cheese (Chuck Thorndyke even suggested it) likely knowing full well if they are caught, they will be arrested.

  • Precursors: In chapter 15, upon Lindsey being let in on the know about the Mobians, Amy alludes to the Ancient Risaeðlurs (a reference to the dinosaurs in spacesuits) who were responsible for creating life on Mobius and presumably several other alien planets.

  • Sadist: Eggman is especially this in chapter 13, to the point where it's even lampshaded in-narration.

  • The Speechless: Subverted. Metallic is not capable of vocal speech outside of beeps and buzzing, but he is still able to communicate through sign language. At the end of chapter 11, he gains a voice chip, ending the usage of this trope in the story.

  • Unwilling Roboticisation: Both Metallic and his/Sonic's Uncle Chuck are explicitly this.
