Laconia

A planet within the ring system that has been settled by rogue elements within the Martian Congressional Republic.

    Cara

Cara

Portrayed By: Emma Ho

    Duarte

Admiral Winston Duarte

Portrayed By: Dylan Taylor

A Martian Admiral, and the leader of the Martian splinter group working with Marco Inaros.

  • Adaptational Villainy: Also, Adaptational Jerkass. While he is every bit as charming and affable as in the books, he is far smugger and more dismissive of Marco in the television series. Also counts as Jerkass to One.
  • Affably Evil: Duarte is charming and good with children.
  • Badass Boast: To Marco at the end of season 6, "You were a useful distraction, but I have gods to kill."
  • The Bad Guy Wins: In an almost unheard-of power play, Season 5 ends with Duarte holding all the cards — of practically every game: He has the protomolecule, he has Paolo Cortazar, his own splinter faction and armada of the MCRN, his own planet rich with Ring Builder technology, and Marco Inaros dancing on the palm of his hand without even realizing it. While everyone is busy dealing with Marco, Duarte is slowly and quietly accumulating power beyond anyone's comprehension.
  • Bilingual Bonus: As a final show of what he truly thinks of Marco Inaros upon abandoning him, he gives him one final, sarcastic farewell in Belter creole with perfect pronunciation.
    Oyedeng, Beltalowda.
  • Decomposite Character: What little role Duarte played in the book Season Five is based on is given to Sauveterre, primarily so the show could keep Duarte as the unseen mastermind behind the Martian splinter faction.
  • Kill the God: Claims this to be his goal, possibly referring to the hyperspace aliens.
  • Greater-Scope Villain: As his splinter group has not only several MCRN warships at their disposal but also the protomolocule and what appears to be an alien ship in orbit over Laconia at their disposal, Duarte appears to be shaping up to be this. Especially with the reveal that Admiral Sauveterre was only a Disc-One Final Boss working for Duarte.
  • Pet the Dog: He consoles Cara when her brother is killed in an accident. He also appears to treat Cortazar as far more of an equal than Johnson, Dawes or Inaros ever did, acknowledging that his mind and expertise is necessary for Duarte's vision, and thus to be respected.
  • Sequel Hook: The final shot of the final season is an image of the protomolecule at Laconia Station being activated by Duarte and Cortazar, glowing an eerie red and seen through the Laconia Ring. While the threat of Marco Inaros has ended, fans of the books know full well that the real nightmare is only just beginning...
  • Smug Smiler: He takes no small amount of joy in kicking Marco to the curb in his hour of need, denigrating Marco as a distraction that has run its course and refusing any further aid.
  • Visionary Villain: He seeks to recreate the dream of Mars on Laconia, believing it to be dead on Mars itself.
