General
The small river port town of Barato once knew only one gang under the leadership of a certain Hidoro Tamotsu. When Hidoro planned to give his gambling hall to his son, a Succession Crisis happened, and Hidoro's right-hand man Umakichi split the gang, waging war against Hidoro's son's for the control of Barato.
- Bandit Clan: The Hidoro gang is led by the Hidoro family.
- Bad Guy Bar: Umakichi's headquarters is situated in an inn.
- The Casino: Hidoro's mob possesses a gambling hall over which they fight with Umakichi.
- Dirty Cop: Both sides bribe the police to get away with their crimes, but while Umakichi bribes the local police chief, Matasuke Ejiri, Hidoro bribes the main branch of the police in Sapporo, ensuring that neither can use the cops against each other.
- Mob War: Hidoro's and Umakichi's sides have been fighting a war for quite some time.
- Succession Crisis: When the former boss, Hidoro, announced his son, Shinpei, would inherit the gambling hall, Umakichi was infuriated not to inherit the business instead of the son.
- Work Off the Debt: Hidoro's gang forcefully hire anyone who cannot pay their loss at the gambling hall into the local herring fishery.
Umakichi Kusuda
A former subordinate of the former mob boss of Barata, who split up the gang after the boss' son inherited the gambling hall.
- Gonk: Cauliflower ears, buck teeth, and above all the gigantic Fish Eyes make Umakichi creepy.
- Dirty Coward: His plan to use a pregnant mistress as a hostage disgusts Hijikata rather hefty price for the time), Umakichi immediately proposes less than half of it.
- Tertiary Sexual Characteristics: Has rather long eyelashes.
Tamotsu Hidoro
The boss of the Hidoro gang.
- Evil Is Sterile: Tamotsu is unbeknownst to himself, sterile. His son, Shinpei, is actually a bastard.
- Til Murder Do Us Part: He assassinates his wife in a fit of anger when she reveals to him that Shinpei is a bastard.
The Hidoro Matriarch
Tamotsu's wife, and the actual brain of the gang.
- Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Subverted. While Hijikata says that people like her are at their weakest concerning family members, she refuses to hand down her part of the map for the sake of her unborn grandchild.
- Evil Matriarch: She shares leadership of the gang with her husband and son, and is regularly noted as evil and ruthless.
- Til Murder Do Us Part: She is assassinated by her husband when in a fit of anger, she reveals that Shinpei was a bastard.
- Villainous Valour: Evil as she is, she doesn't hesitate to put her life on the line, stepping into a trap willingly where armed men are likely to attack her.
Shinpei Hidoro
Tamotsu's son, a loud but cowardly heir to the gang.
- Boisterous Weakling: Shinpei is all talk, and his bragging hides his fear of violence.
- Heroic Bastard: Shinpei only wants to get away from his parents' criminal life.
Chieko
Tamotsu's mistress, but also Shinpei's lover.
- The Mistress: She is Tamotsu's mistress, not that it does have any impact on the plot.
