Main Characters
Sayoko
An unemployed shut-in feared by most of the town who dreams of returning to her hometown.
- Action Girl
- Amnesiac Hero: Has large gaps in her memory, both of her life before the town and of what happened the last time she tried to leave.
- The Dreaded: Widely considered to be the single best combatant in town.
- First Person Snarker: Mostly about her own inadequacies, but not above taking potshots at other characters.
- The Pig-Pen: Pacifica recoils from her mid-hug and is horrified to learn that she hadn't bathed since Anya spilled coffee on herself a hundred years ago.
- Red Baron: "The Ninja"
Yoru
A mysterious girl who unexpectedly arrives, the first time a new ghost has ever appeared in town. She starts rooming with Sayoko after being rescued from the Church's custody.
- Heroic Sacrifice: Sets off an explosion at Renja's factory to allow Pacifica and Anya to escape. Of course, since Death Is Cheap Sayoko just notes that they'll need to pick her up from the garbage dump later.
- Hidden Depths: Somehow knows a lot about computers and programming.
- Line-of-Sight Name: Sayoko gives her the name Yoru, meaning night, simply because they met at night.
- Money Dumb: She spends a truly staggering amount after getting paid in advance for her live-in job from Margaret which ends up putting her deep in debt.
Pacifica
A friend of Sayoko's with a personal grudge against the Church and a lot of useful connections.
- Obliquely Obfuscated Occupation: Sayoko has no idea what her job actually is beyond the fact that she works from home and makes quite a lot of money.
- Pre-Asskicking One-Liner: "I'm all out of cash, but I've got plenty of lead."
Anya
An engineer and Sayoko's friend.
- Wrench Wench: An engineer who, among other things, built the armored car that the girls try to use to cross the snowfields.
Other Characters
Clara
A young nun-in-training utterly devoted to the Priest and beloved by almost the whole town.
- Believing Their Own Lies: Sayoko thinks that lying about her reasons for wanting to be friends was too painful for Clara, so she convinced herself that it was the truth.
- The Chew Toy: Not an appearance goes by without her being belittled, tormented, maimed or killed by Sayoko and friends.
- Loved by All: The only people in town who don't like her are Sayoko, Anya and especially Pacifica.
- The Mole: A large part of the reason she tries to be friends with Sayoko is to report on her movements to the Priest.
- The Pollyanna: Never loses her cheery attitude regardless of how much of a beating she's taken or how many times she's killed.
The Priest
The leader of the Church and de facto ruler of the town.
- Big Bad: He's the closest thing the story has to an overarching antagonist.
- Everyone Calls Him "Barkeep": Only ever referred to as the Priest.
- Faux Affably Evil: Maintains a calm and mostly respectful demeanor around Sayoko, even while pointing a gun at her.
- Hidden Agenda Villain: It's unclear why he holds such animosity towards Sayoko or why he holds Yoru in custody when she first arrives beyond claiming that she's a "witch".
- Sinister Minister: Much of the evils of the Church can be traced back directly to him.
Aleksey
A friend of Anya's and fellow engineer.
- Gadgeteer Genius: An extremely competent engineer, able to build anti-gravity automatic housecleaners, robots and even a portable forcefield.
- Inconsistent Spelling: While the game itself is consistent in calling him Aleksey, some external materials such as his Steam trading card call him Alexei.
Renja
A "sweets seller" who lives on the top floor of Sayoko's apartment block.
- Green-Eyed Monster: In her eyes, if you aren't someone's best friend you're worthless to them.
- Super Wheelchair: Her wheelchair can transform into a powerful Spider Tank.
- Unusual Euphemism: "Sweets" is a local euphemism for drugs of various kinds.
- Walking Spoiler: Impossible to talk about in any detail without spoiling her true role in episode 4.
Met
Renja's right-hand woman.
- The Big Guy: Very tall and possibly the physically strongest character.
- Not Brainwashed: While she does have a mind controlling implant, she claims that she would be just as devoted to Renja regardless
Chief of Police
- Big Damn Heroes: Rescues Sayoko from several goons after she escapes from Pacifica's burning house.
- Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: While initially not shown to be very effectual, he's actually a competent tactical fighter and a good shot.
- Everyone Calls Him "Barkeep": He's only ever called by his rank.
- Shotguns Are Just Better: His weapon of choice in a shootout.
- Wild Card: Interested in maintaining law and order above loyalty to any particular group which puts him both against and with Sayoko in equal measure.
Patel
The owner of a café that Sayoko and friends frequent.
- Lethal Chef: Downplayed. While the coffee he serves is good enough it's noted that the food is not worth bothing with.
- Stepford Smiler: Admits that his customer service smile is completely fake and asks the girls to remember that if he's ever late opening it's because he spent a few minutes sat in his car crying.
