Byx

Byx is one of a dog-like race called dairnes, and believes she is the last of her kind.

• Action Girl: Khara teaches her a few sword moves, which she proceeds to use in battle.
• Classical Anti-Hero: She frequently doubts her abilities, and doesn't think she's very brave.
• Deadpan Snarker: She can be this at times, though she doesn't understand sarcasm.
• I Am Not Weasel: Byx resembles a bipedal dog, but she hates being called one. She's not a dog, she is a dairne.
• Last of His Kind: After her pack is killed, she fears she is this.
• Living Lie Detector: She can tell when someone is lying or hiding information.
• Running on All Fours: She does this sometimes to disguise as a dog, or if she needs to move quickly.
• Sarcasm-Blind: Dairnes don't quite understand sarcasm. She grows out of this as she spends time with the humans.

Kharassande "Khara" Donati

"Understand something. Your enemy is not helpless just because you've drawn blood. Your enemy is not helpless until he stops breathing. If you find yourself in a fight, that is your goal: not to frighten, not to wound. But to kill."

Khara is from the Donati family, which opposes the Murdano. She is the leader of the main team.

• Beware the Nice Ones: She's friendly, but will not hesitate to kill you if you get on her bad side.
• Combat Pragmatist: She fights to kill, not to wound. She often uses the terrain to her advantage.
• Deadpan Snarker: She often makes sarcastic comments.
  Renzo: A masterpiece of careful planning and flawless execution.
  Khara: Yes, with a great deal of frantic running and general panic.
• The Leader: She leads the group of Byx, Gambler, Renzo, and Tobble.
• Sweet Polly Oliver: She dresses as a boy so she can hunt.

Renzo

Renzo is a thief who joins the group on their journey.

Byx: Ready?

Renzo: No, I'm enjoying the warmth.

• Lovable Rogue: He's a decent person, despite his tendency to steal.
• The Smart Guy: He makes many of the group's plans.
• Sticky Fingers: He loots as the group travels, to Khara's displeasure.

Tobble

Tobble is a wobbyk that Byx rescues from a sinking ship. He promises to save her life in return and comes with her.

• Badass Adorable: He's a small, fluffy animal, but he takes down much larger creatures.
• Beware the Nice Ones: Tobble is one of the most friendly in the group, but also a fierce fighter.
• The Heart: He is the most moral of the team.
• Predator-Prey Friendship: He's friends with Byx, who's eaten his species before.
• You Wouldn't Like Me When I'm Angry!: He repeatedly warns the others that they don't want to see an angry wobbyk.

Elios "Gambler" Str'ank

"Never underestimate the human when it comes to duplicity and slaughter."

Gambler is a felivet that Byx meets in a dungeon. He joins the group after they escape.

• The Big Guy: The most powerful fighter in the group.
• Cat Folk: The felivets resemble bipedal wild cats.
• Cats Hate Water: He'll swim, but he doesn't like it.
• Good Is Not Soft: He will quickly kill any threats to the group.
• Only Known By His Nickname: His real name is only mentioned once. He's otherwise known as Gambler. It's brought up again in the third book when its signifigance becomes apparent.
