Anyone else think Pinkie was being a dick in this epsiode
Hide / Show RepliesNo why are you people forgetting that Dash was being just as bad. You're just mad because poor little Luna got hurt oh boo hoo let me play a sad song for you on a violin! Sheesh just so you know everyone was being just as cruel to Luna not just pinkie get that through your skull you Luna fanbrats! stop targeting Pinkie she didnt do anything so pick on Dash and everyone else who was mean to luna and leave pinkie alone!
Edited by 216.99.32.45IIRC, RD was being a generic jerkass to everyone while Pinkie was singling Luna out.
Also, RD got some sort of comeuppance, Pinkie didn't.
Personally, I think Luna was being a bit self-entitled, since she did try to destroy the country, and yet expects everyone to brush that under the rug.
Oh right Dash did get punished I wonder why pinkie didn't get what Dash got you know being scared off for payback. Luna and nightmare moon were kind of the same pony she should have been a least bit understanding as to why ponies feared her.
Well I feel sorry for your unreasonable hate for pinkie. I know she isn't perfect no one is perfect. So hating her over what she did to poor little Luna is just sad. Everyone was being this way to Luna so hate them while you are at it. Yeah I am a huge pinkie fan I like her so I feel the need to defend my favorite character.
Kinda like fluttershy gets free passes. I didn't like pinkie's characterization at all in season three you are right the writers make her unbearable it's ok I admit I get hostile too but I never attack anyone since we all have different opinions. When it comes to the mane six the writers always messes them up.
This needs a re-write. What is being foreshadowed? What is the callback to? Probably better to leave foreshadowing out of it: that emphasizes past->future whereas this is future->past, and often more of a gag than a dramatic device.
- Call-Back:
- More of a foreshadowing, but at the beginning of the episode Twilight scolds Spike about not recognizing her costume, asking "Did you even read that book I gave you on obscure Pony history?". Later in Secret of My Excess, Spike remarks that Twilight always gives him books for his birthday.
What if they explode, and then explode again?
Edited by GoldenFootballPlayerStop being sock puppets, Pinkie Pie and Spike.
Edited by MadWritter Logging off, Dr Thinker, a.k.a, Mad WritterYou know, this Luna still kind of works with the shy!Luna characterization fanon gave her. She's still awkward and socially behind, she's just trying way too hard. If anything, she's a lot like the Luna from Progress..
Edited by RinellaWasHere Look! A witticism!Between her hammy voice and the wind blowing when she yelled, I was wondering when she would start battling giant mutant-hunting robots.
Thanks for clearing away all those annoying Fanon personas, Luna. You're about 20% cooler than that stuff.
"'TWAS BUT A SMALL EFFORT!"
Does that mean 'you're welcome'?
"YEA VERILY!"
Because "Yeah" is definitely a word they used one thousand years ago.
People need to stop adding The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou as a shout-out. It doesn't bear close scrutiny.
First off the episode has a standard navy/black beanie NOT an orange one like the entry I deleted. Second the Steve Zissou is after a "Jaguar" shark which well is Exactly What It Says on the Tin and this doesn't match the flank-munching normal shark of the episode. Third it much more closely matches Matt Hooper's/Richard Dreyfuss'◊ (on the left with a parody on the right) getup in Jaws.
While I'm not one to enforce a small reference pool, a quirky reference to a total box office flop (with problems) verus an unproblematic reference to the original blockbuster... Occam's Razor dices Steve Zissou to ribbons. Not maybe both either.
Hide / Show RepliesI am going to take this opportunity to rant about over-interpreted shout outs.
A shout out is something that anyone who's seen the work being referenced should be able to immediately notice and say 'aha!'
If you notice ONE detail in common with another fictional work, and then shoehorn in a bunch of other details to make it fit, THAT'S NOT A SHOUT OUT. YOU ARE BEING JIM CARREY IN THE NUMBER 23.
Furthermore, shout outs aren't based on audience reactions. Which is to say, YOU don't get to decide what a shout out is. If it's clearly intended by the creator to be a shout out, that's when it becomes one. Obviously, it's not always possible to get Word of God on this, so use your best discretion (refer to above).
I got an idea for this episode's Laconic section:
Luna spooks almost all of Ponyville.
Or if it's we GO WITH THE OLD FASHION YELLING......
WE SPOOKED THOU OF PONYVILLE
Edited by MadWritter Logging off, Dr Thinker, a.k.a, Mad Writter Hide / Show RepliesWhich roughly translates into "We spooked you of Ponyville." That sure puts the "butchered" into Ye Olde Butcherede Englishe.
Just to say, that is grammatically correct, if a bit unnecessarily awkward.
Comparisons have been made between Luna's chariot and Tirac's chariot (visible HERE starting at around 18:45). Now I am not QUITE seeing it as being THAT similar myself, but I guess it could count as a reference/allusion/whatever.
Edited by DracoDei Christian Furry Brony D&D gamemaster & homebrewer"Mac the Ripper"? Really?
(The chicken costume isn't really a visual pun, because visual puns are more obvious. The example of "combing" the desert with a giant comb. You don't get that Pinkie Pie is "chicken" until you think about it. In my case, for a whole day. :P )
Edited by Robotech_Master Hide / Show RepliesYeah, my first thought would be "Mac the Knife" - Threepenny Opera is set in psuedo-Victorian era as well.
Mac The Knife, is indeed, a more direct pun, although I could see it either way.
Edited by DracoDei Christian Furry Brony D&D gamemaster & homebrewerIt seems to me a little strange that the ponies are holding a Nightmare Night celebration as usual, to try to keep the "evil" Nightmare Moon at bay, even though they know that Nightmare Moon has been redeemed and is no longer evil. You'd think someone would have realized that Princess Luna is on earth now and nothing is keeping her from showing up to see what all the fuss is about. It's almost like they Didn't Think This Through.
Edited by Robotech_Master Hide / Show RepliesAccording to the first episode most ponies regard the tale of Nightmare Moon as "just an old pony tale." They probably weren't ever really serious about using the festival to ward off evil, any more than most people think of Halloween as anything more than an opportunity for free candy.
Edited by DacilrielWell, you would have THOUGHT that having the night go over-long would have been NOTICED, and would get some ponies reconsidering their stance on such "myths".
Christian Furry Brony D&D gamemaster & homebrewerWas the music at the beginning a Jimmy Hart Version of "In the Hall of the Mountain King"?
That's just what I thought immediately after hearing it. Then again, it sounds like standard Halloween music too.
Hide / Show RepliesSounded like Bald Mountain to me.
Edited by RinellaWasHere Look! A witticism!does someone mind directing me to the relevant snippet of the song via youtube?
I tried skipping through it but didn't hear what I was looking for.
The first five seconds of the episode, reused again about 16 minutes in, when Twilight is looking for Luna after dramatically promising to lecture her.
Edited by Godzil@Godzil
I was talking about the part of Bald Mountain that matched what I was thinking of.
Turns out we're talking about different things. I was talking about the first 5 seconds of the episode and Mountain King.
Does anyone know exactly what the haters hate about Pipsqueak? I've been seeing the occasional hate comments inbetween reading the love ones, but the only time anyone has said anything about why they hated him, their reasons seemed to be that he was British sounding and dressed like a pirate. :-/
Hide / Show RepliesWell, I love him. I think they're just afraid he'll steal airtime or something.
You know how sometimes there is a person who you just don't like, even if you don't know anything about them? If yes, thats what I feel towards Pip, I'm willing to give him a chance and can't really say he took anything from the episode, its just I dislike him for no particular reason.
There always is that ONE character that no body can agree on
A new character, who is introduced mainly to ask questions about local traditions and later make peace with Luna. His role eaily could have been given to a pre-established foal, and the CMC even appear in his group (so does Dinky), but none of them get any lines. His haters probably dislike how unnecessary he is, while promotional images and his over-the-top introduction showcased him as important.
Wait, why are we arguing about this? Hater are gonna hate, they don't need a reason. Or they're trolls. In which case they have their own logic.
Pretty much everything Godzil said, I think. I don't mind him, but I agree he wasn't neccesary. And I've heard a few complaints from people who think Hasbro demanded that they add a male character.
Also, just thought of this- did he have the angular snout adult colts have?
Edited by RinellaWasHere Look! A witticism!I don't mind having a male supporting, personally. I think what rubbed people the wrong way was that Pip was an Audience Surrogate and a new guy at the same time, some people not being comfortable being in the POV of someone completely new. That, and nobody's sure if he's a bull calf or not.
My webzone. You're right, RinellaWasHere. I thought he was a girl because he had a girl snout.
I didn't hate him, but I didn't love him. He was introduced suddenly and didn't affect the plot in ways preexisting children couldn't, so people probably felt like he was adorable but not much else.
I thought he sounded pretty cute, though. Don't know why; he just did.
Actually a girl. Why was the Great Expectations Shout Out removed?
Hide / Show RepliesI don't know the original motivation of whoever removed it, but apart from the name and an indecisive accent, what evidence do we have that he's a Shout-out?
Look! A witticism!Maybe the accent was the extent of the shout out. As in, "Here's a character called Pip. He's going to affect an English accent for exactly one line for apparently no reason."
I'm not totally sure the accent was completely intentional. His VA sounds like an actual child. As a teacher who's worked with young children in theatre, I've noticed that a lot of little kids default to an English accent when acting. As far as I can tell, they think it sounds more theatrical. So the VA may have done it by accident.
Look! A witticism! You learn something every day. Hell, that may count as a Genius Bonus.
Look! A witticism!I assumed the British accent was because he's from Trottingham which is a play on Nottingham.
Pinto coloring is common; it's not much of an indicator of breed.
Does Luna's speech actually count as Ye Olde Butcherede Englishe? That's for when it is actually butchered, yes? So wouldn't it just be Antiquated Linguistics in her case?
Edited by Twiddler Hide / Show RepliesI wanted to add an aversion of Ye Olde Butcherede Englishe, but now I'm not sure it that's valid. "Unless the trope is so universal within a genre that exceptions truly stand out, there's not much point in listing an aversion" Considering the genre is children's cartoons...
Edited by CaptainhookI'll admit, I'm interesting in seeing what role he plays in this episode (and maybe future episodes as well?). However, I'll mainly focus on Princess Luna and see how that goes.
Luna's characterization seemed... overdone. I suppose it makes sense, seeing as she was a very melodramatic villain and is newly redeemed, but she's not much like the humbled glimpse of her we caught at the end of the second episode.
Oh, who am I kidding? I'm mad because my fan fiction is now moot. :P
Actually a girl. Hide / Show RepliesYou know, I've been thinking about Luna's canon characterization all day (while I was supposed to be grading papers), and it doesn't totally invalidate the shy!Luna fanon version. Her Large Ham attitude and overreactions seemed more like a socially inexperienced girl who's trying way too hard to be liked. The fanon of her as awkward and childlike still holds true, it just needs some updating. I don't know which version of her you used in your story, but it may not be a total loss.
Look! A witticism!I had her being really quiet and shy, in contrast with Trixie, who she was trying to teach about the Magic Of Friendship. The idea was a dysfunctional version of the Celestia/Twilight relationship.
(With Steven Magnet as Spike! :P)
Edited by Webby Actually a girl.Does anybody mind if we use this◊ as the image? The current one is really misleading, and it's from the end. I figured it's not a big enough deal to take to Image Pickin'.
If everyone's okay with it, I want to change it.
Actually a girl. Hide / Show RepliesWas thinking about using this...
I think I either my edit bounced, or someone's reverting the page on me. Edited by moocow1452 My webzone. That could work too, since it's her first appearance. Didn't realize there were any other pictures in the running.
EDIT: Looked through the history. Looks like it's been getting reverted. I personally sorta like mine. Love your caption, though.
Edited by Webby Actually a girl.Well, whatever. I got my edit to stick, but if you think the picture works better, go right ahead.
Edit: Strike that, somepony wants to keep the image and caption on, and is reverting attempts to do otherwise. I'm personally not gonna pick a fight on this one.
Edited by moocow1452 My webzone. It doesn't matter much to me. I like 'em both for different reasons, and I don't see much reason for an edit war here.
Actually a girl.I'll be honest, I don't like the new caption. Not the "She's Back!", but the whole "Burning Fanon to the ground!" line. There are several views on just how much fanon she invalidates, and it sets a negative tone.
Edited by RinellaWasHere Look! A witticism!Very do not want to be dragged into an edit war, but if Burning Fanon to the ground is the issue, and I'm partial to Metallica, maybe we can compromise with something like "Exit Light! Enter Night!" Would do it myself, but it's touchy in there, and I'm being crowded out by editors.
My webzone.I can't help but think that "Exit light! Enter Night!" makes it sound like she's the Nightmare Moon again.
I actually prefer the image linked to at the top of this thread. I may be the best representative of Luna's character. It's the best I've seen so far. Plus, it's got Twilight as Starswirl the Bearded.
Why does the entry for Physical Goddess call Luna's displays of power "Clumsy"?
I thought they looked pretty badass
Edited by gingerninja666 "Contests fought between two masters are decided instantly. An invisible battle is now raging between the two of them." Lulu vs Schneizel Hide / Show RepliesIt seemed subconscious and/or unintentional to me. Of course that is compared to Celestia's generally low-key actions.
I don't think so, on the grounds that they have to actually be wearing clothing.
Edited by moocow1452 My webzone.I don't think so. That trope is more for ridiculous and gaudy costumes. Hers is simple. It may qualify for Brown Bag Mask. Also, I think I espied Berry Punch in an Adventurer Outfit in the background at one point.
Berry Punch, Drunk Explorer. The fanfic writes itself.
Look! A witticism!I assume you're referring to the Derpy in the apple barrel, I'd say it qualifies.
I reread the trope description, and I've changed my mind. It qualifies.
Look! A witticism!:/
Edited by gingerninja666 "Contests fought between two masters are decided instantly. An invisible battle is now raging between the two of them." Lulu vs SchneizelThe page image should probably be of Luna as she actually is instead of the form she took during her little prank at the end.
Hide / Show RepliesAgreed. The image we have now, along with the text under it (does that have a name?) make this look and sound like a "Return of Nightmare Moon!" episode, as opposed to an Adorkable Luna episode.
Look! A witticism! You're talking my language, RinellaWasHere. The current image sends completely the wrong message about the plot. WE HATH WEIGHED IT IN THE BALANCE AND DOTH FIND IT WANTING! EXPELLED SHALL IT BE FROM THE PAGE!
Now it's Luna in her cloak, but it still looks Nightmare Moon-ish. It gives that Halloween feel, but still isn't very Luna-like. Wasn't it originally Luna talking to Twilight? What happened to that image?
if we ever write a laconic, it needs to be in Ye Olde Butcherede Englishe
Hide / Show RepliesAnyone think that one filly saying she wanted to be a zombie next year was a Shout-Out to Story of the Blanks?
Hide / Show Repliesnot EVERYTHING is a shout out.
Maybe if she had said she wanted to be a 'blank flank zombie.'
It was more like a Call-Back to the Zombie Apocalypse bit of Bridal Gossip.
Not at all, to be honest. Zombies are a really common Halloween costume, and the line was only there to illustrate her sadness over the cancellation.
Look! A witticism!speaking of flimsy shout outs, does anyone think Luna was channeling Batman during her entrance?
She's got the Lunamobile, then she glides down to the ground from the sky, her black cape (fine, cloak) fluttering behind her.
Edited by theodrixxI wasn't then, but now that scene is paired forever with the old Batman theme in my mind.
Look! A witticism!I don't think it was a Shout-Out; as mentioned zombies are a common costume. I figured it was supposed to kind of cute and silly: a little fillie in a cute costume wanted so badly to be a zombie.
Edited by Webby Actually a girl.I don't think Pipsqueak being called Little Pip is a shout-out. I mean, he's little and Pip is short for Pipsqueak.
Hide / Show RepliesNeither do I. It's just one of those things that can never be proven or disproven. I certainly find it very unlikely though.
I don't think we need to get rid of it, just put it in a YMMV tab. It's very possible that fans are reading too much into it, but we do know that the staff is paying attention to the fandom. So it could go either way.
I'd move it to YMMV, and mention that it may not be shout-out after all. Actually, we can just include the end of Heinious's comment.
Look! A witticism! On a related note, does he have a native British accent and it keeps slipping throughout the episode, or is it just a part of his pirate outfit?
I think he's forcing it. I only heard once or twice, and it was only when he was calm enough to remember to do it. Then again, they did mention that he'd just moved there, so he may actually have an accent. We probably just have to wait for future episodes involving him to find out.
Look! A witticism! That's what I think too. The accent seems very fake and "Oliver Twist" and he only uses it once that I can remember (when he first appears).
Also, a lot of posters on EQD seem to loathe him already. Not a majority, mind, but quite a few. I think our little Pip is barreling towards Broken Base status.
Also also, instead of making the "Little Pip" a Shout-Out to FO:E, we could just include a Names The Same.
Look! A witticism!Aww, but he's adorable. Cynically, I bet they would have liked him more if he were female.
If he comes back and gets roles, he may very well become The Wesley
Why must we be so cynical, Nerfguy? Maybe he'll actually become an enjoyable character? Have a bit more faith.
Personally I like Pip. The only issue I had was the flipping back and forth with his accent. But I think he had actual child do his voice so that can be forgiven.
I'd like to point out that Kkat herself explained in the very first chapter of Fallout Equestria that 'Littlepip' was a contraction of Little Pipsqueak. It's a coincidence, really.
So, shall we put down a Names The Same for him? It's worth noting even if it was unintended, which most examples of that trope are anyway.
Edited by RinellaWasHere Look! A witticism!Damn it! Did someone screen-cap the page? Someone deleted everything!
Hide / Show RepliesOh. Heh, good thing I don't care at all, right?
Edited by HeinousActsZXI'm thinking we may want to add a Broken Base averted onto here. The Internet Backdraft a lot of people expected over Luna's characterization doesn't seem to have occurred yet. Is it too early to call it averted?
Man, I've posted a lot today.
Look! A witticism! Hide / Show RepliesYeah, much to everypony's surprise, but let's hold off on doin' it just yet. Give it some time. I've posted a lot today too.
If anything breaks the base, it's Pipsqueak. Some love him; others hate him. Everybody seems to have some opinion about him.
The new YMMV tab has him down as The Scrappy. As soon as it becomes open again I'll put this in, since there are a lot of fans who like him.
EDIT: Done. And we can add the Luna aversion if it holds true later.
Edited by RinellaWasHere Look! A witticism!Am I the only one who noticed Mrs. & Mr. Cake dressed as Raggedy Ann & Andy https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/RaggedyAnnAndAndyAMusicalAdventure at the Nightmare Night Festival? Why has this not been mentioned under Shout-Outs yet?
Edited by Serpentking456 Hide / Show RepliesI noticed this too, but the page keeps getting checked out :P
Somebody make this edit!
It's been done. And yeah, I don't think there's been ten minutes today when this page wasn't checked out.
Look! A witticism!I'm new to this site, I was wondering would the Twilight/Pinkie alley scene "No screaming no shreiking" a strong enough case for Rape as Comedy? Or is it a different trope all together?
Hide / Show RepliesWell out of context maybe, but I think it's more of a Not What It Looks Like scenario.
Yeah that seems more along the lines I was thinking. Just didn't know if it was a trope or not.
Probably, especially with the bit a few seconds later with Twilight lying on top of Pinkie holding her down. It makes sense in context, but once the image macro fans are through with it....
Is Pipsqueak really a Cousin Oliver? Can we truely judge that yet? We didn't call the Cutie Mark Crusaders Cousin Olivers when they showed up. They're simply addin' a new character.
Edited by HeinousActsZX Hide / Show RepliesAgreed. They explain his absence from the earlier episodes, and he's certainly not a token child. At best, it's a YMMV.
Edited by RinellaWasHere Look! A witticism!Am I the only one who didn't find Luna's effort to be scary at the end remotely scary?
Hide / Show RepliesHey, it's kind of amazing with all the tropes that we've managed to give this episode already! How many more tropes do you think will be given in the complete episode?
Hide / Show RepliesGiven that its teh Luna episode.... I foresee many tropes...
You there! Check out my Youtube Channel! The power of Ponies compel you!A guy on 4Chan has released an image of Luna wearing Zecora's hooded cloak and smiling deviously. This has caused Luna's fans to explode, but for a different reason. They've gone to pieces that their idol will turn evil again! They ignore the fact that this could be an Imagine Spot and the glaring possibility that the guy could have faked the picture. I've seen it myself and personally think that it looks a bit phony. Any opinions?
Edited by Captainhook Hide / Show RepliesPlus it is "Nightmare Night"... she could very well be in costume TO TRY TO FIT IN. Note also that the last person to wear that costume wasn't at all evil.
Christian Furry Brony D&D gamemaster & homebrewerOr it could be a flashback to explaining HOW Luna become Nightmare Moon......
Logging off, Dr Thinker, a.k.a, Mad WritterThen again, it would be so delicious to see all their faces if she did go bad again. Heh.
Spooky.
Under the explanation for Ye Olde Butcherede Englishe, The way Luna talks to Pipsqueak is not a slip-up. Her change from "thou" to "you" makes perfect sense; she is addressing only Pipsqueak in the former case and his entire group in the latter. Her meaning is the equivalent of turning to Twilight and asking, "Is this young colt saying that... he wishes me to scare him and his friends?" This is an entirely reasonable thing to say.
Yes, it carries the possibility that Pipsqueak is making the request against his friends' wishes, but it's clear from context that is not the case. Pipsqueak wants himself and his friends scared. That his friends want the same thing is implied. Luna's formulation is less specific than it could be but no less correct.
