Title From: After The Fall (1964)

Clifford Blossom conspires to replace Reggie with a white kid following the car accident, but Cheryl warns Archie and the Bulldogs, who stand by Reggie and make him team captain. Betty and Veronica commiserate over their neglectful parents and Betty runs away to live with Veronica. Jughead supports Ethel as she uses her creative outlet to deal with what has happened to her.

Tropes

  • Almost Kiss: Betty and Veronica agree to kiss but Mary Andrews and Smithers walk in, quelling the moment.
  • Deliberate Values Dissonance: Clifford Blossom blames Reggie for the accident in which his son nearly died simply because he's half Korean.
    • Police work is still shoddy. Even though Sheriff Keller believes Ethel's killing of the milkman was self-defense (it was), he doesn't really investigate, believes the case to be solved until Jughead says they don't know who the man is, his only suggestion to figure that out is that (maybe) his fingerprints are on file at the police station, and is more concerned about Ethel being sent back to the Sisters. Even after he agrees not to, he still says she is a minor who has to be in the care of an adult. This ignores the fact that Jughead is also a minor living alone, and Sheriff Keller, who investigated him earlier in the season, knows this.
  • Gag Penis: Veronica enquires who the most well-endowed guy at school is. Kevin and Clay affirm that while Archie and Reggie should both be very happy with their lots in life, the luckiest by far is... Dilton Doiley. Cue squeeing and Veronica's ironically size-shaming remark.
Veronica: It's always the little ones!
  • I'm Not a Hero, I'm...: Justified. Reggie's reaction when Archie calls him a hero for saving the Bulldogs from drowning. Reggie explains he knew the racism that would ensue if they died and he survived would put him in jail or get him killed.
  • Lonely Together: Betty and Veronica bond because of their respective neglectful, abusive parents.
  • Mama Bear: Mary Andrews shows a maternal concern for Betty and Veronica's well-being, after she learns their respective mothers disowned and evicted them. She chews out both Alice Cooper and Hermione Lodge, resulting in them both undoing their misdeeds.
  • Never My Fault: When Ethel calls out Alice for sending her to the Sisters Of Quiet Mercy, Alice says that it was Hal’s idea (despite her being the one to actually send Ethel there).
  • Platonic Declaration of Love: On the phone, Veronica tells Betty that she loves her, and Betty says it back.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Mary gives one to Alice and Hermione for their treatment of their daughters. While Hermione’s reaction is unknown, Alice clearly doesn’t take Mary’s words seriously and it’s implied she only let Betty come back out of obligation.
  • The Scapegoat: At the beginning of the episode, Clifford Blossom says that the accident must be Reggie's fault somehow even though Julian was driving and Reggie saved everyone else's lives, including Julian's, by pulling them out of the water. It's this that prompts Clifford to plan to replace Reggie with KO Kelly. Fortunately, the rest of the team refuses to let him.
  • Ship Tease: Betty and Veronica get a lot closer.
  • Teen Genius: Discussed. Fieldstone dubs Ethel 'girl genius' after hearing that she escaped from the evil nuns and killed the Milkman in self-defence.
  • Wise Beyond Their Years: Discussed. Fieldstone calls Jughead this, after Jughead argue that they openly fight against the censorship rather than lay low.
  • Ungrateful Bastard: Clifford’s reaction to Reggie’s rescue of his son? Blame him for the accident, attempt to get him kicked off the team and come dangerously close to saying a racist slur about him.
