Title from: The Witches of Eastwick (1987)

After Pickens's plagues murdered Archie, Toni, Jughead, Fangs, Nana Rose, and Dagwood, Heather contacts Sabrina to resurrect them.

Tropes

  • Back from the Dead: Archie, Toni, Jughead, Fangs, Nana Rose, Dagwood... and Jason and Polly.
    • Technically also Tabitha, Veronica, and Cheryl.
    • And, of course, Sabrina Spellman, who has been resurrected since the series finale of her own show. Nick Scratch is also back from the dead, but only temporarily, and in Jughead's body rather than his own.
  • Barred from the Afterlife: Nick detects that Betty will be unable to enter Heaven due to Percival equating her with the Harlot of Babylon in the previous episode. Therefore Veronica goes after Archie in her place.
  • The Bus Came Back: Jason and Polly return in the Sweet Hereafter. Cheryl then resurrects them and Nana, along with their son.
  • Came Back Wrong: Heather warns Cheryl that this is a possibility when resurrecting dead people who have been deceased longer than a year or didn't want to come back to life. It's left ambiguous at the end of the episode whether this will apply to any of the people Cheryl brought back, since most of them didn't want to return and Jason and Polly have been dead for several years.
  • Coins for the Dead: When Tabitha, Veronica, and Cheryl have to temporarily die in order to go convince Archie, Toni, Jughead, Fangs, Nana Rose, and Dagwood to return, these are placed on them for Charon, who comes to ferry their souls.
  • Complete Immortality: Anthony.
  • Continuity Nod: During his and Sabrina's date in the restaurant, Nick mentions how his original body is decomposing at the bottom of the Sea of Sorrows. Sabrina also mentions the Mountains of Madness as a possible place to hide out, which is where Father Blackwood went at the beginning of Season 4 of their show, and they make references to Sabrina's aunts and specifically "Auntie Zee".
  • Death Is Cheap: All of the killed off characters from the previous episode return.
  • The Ferryman: Charon takes Tabitha, Veronica, and Cheryl's spirits into the Sweet Hereafter.
  • Flying Broomstick: Sabrina asks Betty if she has her own broom or needs a ride with Sabrina.
  • Foreshadowing: Sabrina is awfully picky about which dead person she's going to try to revive first, specifically that it be a boy she finds attractive, and narrows it down to either Archie or Jughead before choosing Jughead. It turns out this is because she needs a host to reunite with her dead boyfriend, Nick Scratch.
  • Fully Absorbed Finale: This episode resolves plot points from the series finale of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. It's revealed that Nick's self-sacrifice wasn't just so he could join Sabrina in the Sweet Hereafter but allowed her to return to life in his place, which she accuses Nick and her aunties of tricking her into. Sabrina and Nick share a final date (with Nick in Jughead's body) before returning to the morgue and saying a proper goodbye.
  • Initiation Ceremony: Sabrina holds one for Betty, Veronica and Tabitha to officially make them witches so that they can help her, Cheryl and Heather (who are already witches) with their spells. It involves signing their names in the Malleus Maleficarum, pledging allegiance to Hecate, and a spot of music, dancing and ale.
  • Love Triangle:
    • Afterlife Fangs mentions that he and Cheryl were rivals for Toni’s affections and that Toni chose him.
    • Veronica is officially still pining for Archie despite the fact that he’s in a serious relationship with Betty.
  • Mass Resurrection: What Cheryl does with her Phoenix powers.
  • Mythology Gag:
    • In the "afterlife," many characters like Jughead and Sabrina wear their comics-accurate outfits.
    • When Archie decides to return to help his friends fight, he dons an old-fashioned military uniform reminiscent of the one he wears in the "Archie 1941" comic series. In that series, he also promises to return to Betty after WW2.
    • Jughead's comic books are the MadHouse Glads.
  • Necromancer: Sabrina and Nick. This was always one of Nick's specialties, and Sabrina decided to specialize in necromancy after dying and coming back to life.
  • New Body, Old Abilities: While in Jughead's body, Nick still has his witch powers.
  • The Nth Doctor: The character of Nick Scratch from Chilling Adventures of Sabrina appears in this episode, but is played only by Cole Sprouse and not Gavin Leatherwood, as Nick is temporarily resurrected in Jughead's body by Sabrina.
  • Overly Long Hug: Veronica does this to the confusion and slight bemusement of Archie in the Sweet Hereafter.
  • Refusal of the Call: Archie, Jughead, Toni and Fangs all refuse to return to the mortal realm, preferring to live a peaceful existence in the afterlife.
  • Relationship Sabotage: In the past as remembered by Afterlife Betty and Archie, Cheryl tried to stop Polly and Jason from getting married.
  • Reunion Vow: In the afterlife, Archie has decided to leave to help fight Percival, and Afterlife!Betty asks him to promise to come home, which he does.
Betty: Just come home to me.
    Archie: I will.
  • The Reveal:
    • Cheryl is a Phoenix.
    • The reason Anthony wasn't killed with the other first-born is that he's immortal. Although Kevin is also a first-born, he wasn't killed because Percival wanted to deal with his betrayal in a more personal way, since Kevin had been close to him (in fact, they'd even kissed in "Ex Libris").
    • Tabitha is Riverdale's guardian angel. (This makes her an angel, a superhero and a witch).
  • Serpent of Immortality: In the Sweet Hereafter, the Serpents and the Ghoulies sign a peace treaty. Anthony, the Serpent, and Timmy, the Ghoulie, are in love and the symbol of this new accord and peace; in addition, once back in the mortal world, Toni and Fangs learn from Tabitha that Anthony is immortal. Previously, Toni and Fangs spoke of Anthony as the new hope and future of the Serpents.
  • Shared Universe: This episode officially confirms that Riverdale and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina share a universe alongside Katy Keene. Sabrina appeared in "The Witching Hours" earlier this season, but that was an alternate version belonging in the Rivervale universe, whereas this is the same Sabrina from CAOS.
  • Spotting the Thread: Toni realizes Cheryl was right about them being dead when she finds there are no photos in the family album after her and Fangs' wedding.
  • Star-Crossed Lovers: In the Sweet Hereafter, Anthony and Timmy were this until their parents brokered a peace treaty and they could be openly together.
  • Throwing Off the Disability: Type 4. After Cheryl revives him with her Phoenix powers, Jughead regains his hearing (while still retaining the power to hear people’s thoughts).
  • Together in Death: In the Sweet Hereafter, Jason and Polly are married with a family.
  • Wham Shot: When Heather asks Cheryl what she did to piss off the Angel of Death, the camera cuts to Dagwood, Nana Rose… and a very much alive Jason and Polly.
  • Unwanted Revival: Jughead didn’t want to be resurrected and is in a bit of a state of shock at being alive again after Cheryl drags everyone back to life with her Phoenix powers. Tabitha apologises, but then Jughead discovers that his hearing has been restored.
