Tropes

  • Attending Your Own Funeral: A variation as Jughead watches a camera feed of his memorial service.
  • Blackmail Backfire: Bret demands to be let off with just light community service or he'll release the sex tape of Betty and Jughead. FP and Jughead's response is to beat the hell out of Bret until he gives up the tape and turns himself in.
Bret: What the hell is this?
FP: The counter to your counter. (punches Bret with brass knuckles)
  • "Blackmail" Is Such an Ugly Word: Betty tells Donna to give up the Tracy True contract or she reveals the truth of Donna being the granddaughter of its creator and thus having the perfect motive for all the murders.
  • Entitled Bastard: DuPont, believing he, with a privileged background, deserves ownership of the Baxter Brothers series, than some "kid from the other side of tracks".
  • Failed a Spot Check: Jughead openly laughs out how, in all their planning for the "perfect" murder, it never occurred to any of the Stonies to bother checking his pulse.
  • Humiliation Conga: Bret getting beaten to a pulp by a kid he considered a nobody.
  • Once More, with Clarity: We see the flashbacks to Jughead's "murder" only now we see how the team saved his life and then faked the death.
  • Pulling the Thread: The point of the episode as Jughead and Betty methodically figure out the entire murder attempt and why it was done.
  • The Reveal:
    • DuPont murdered his original society members to keep quiet how he stole the Baxter Brothers series from Jughead's grandfather. He then embarked on a mad plot in how to win the contract, each would-be ghostwriter would have to "prove" themselves by committing the perfect murder, thus explaining all the missing students over the years.
    • Moose was to be the victim for the Stonies but Chippings pushed him away to save his life.
    • Forsythe stayed away from his family to keep them safe for fear of DuPont coming after him.
    • Donna is the granddaughter of a circle member that DuPont murdered and stole the character of Tracy True from. Thus, her entire arc has been secretly seeking revenge on DuPont and taking back her "legacy." No matter who else has to die.
  • Saying Too Much: When Jughead asks who was supposed to make sure he was dead, Joan blurts out it was Jonathan, realizing too late her mistake.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Joan, having diplomatic immunity, chose to return to her country, leaving the rest of the Stonies to their own devices, since they're "not really [her] friends" anyway.
  • Secret-Keeper: Jellybean overheard Betty talking to Jughead so she found out what was going on early, and the gang also brought FP into it fast to help sell Jughead's "death." Also, Archie told Mary even though he wasn't supposed to, while Hermosa stumbled onto it.
  • Spanner in the Works: The entire murder plot as the Stonies thought they had it nicely set up and Betty the perfect fall guy. Too bad they never considered the possibility of Jughead surviving his "fatal" blow.
  • Too Clever by Half: As Jughead states, the Stonies went to massive lengths to concoct the "perfect" murder and set-up of Betty but ignored the tiny detail of making sure Jughead was dead.
