Tropes

  • Ambiguously Bi: Archie learns about bisexuality from Clay and Miss Grundy during a lesson on the Beat Poets, and later tells Reggie about it in their shared bedroom, after which both boys take cold showers. When Julian gives Archie and Reggie a gay "wrestling" movie to watch instead of the stag film he promised, they are both fascinated despite knowing they're not "supposed" to be and continue watching the movie. Later, when they go to see sex worker Twyla Twist and she asks if they want to go one at a time or simultaneously, they opt for the latter. After which they watch the sun rise together and make a platonic (?) confession of love for each other.
  • Ambiguous Situation: It's left ambiguous how much Archie and Reggie sexually "expanded their horizons" with each other.
  • Anachronism Stew: Clay casually says "heteronormativity", a term that was not in common small town parlance in the 1950s as it wasn't coined until 1991.
  • Artistic License: Allen Ginsberg is seemingly approved for poetry lessons at Riverdale High, despite Ginsberg openly writing about queer subjects and being involved with (but not a member of) the Communist Party.
  • The Big Damn Kiss: Jughead and Veronica, at the end of the episode, talk, flirt and kiss passionately in front of her lit fireplace.
  • The Bus Came Back: Polly returns in this episode.
  • Call-Back: Jughead and Veronica acknowledge how it didn't work out between them last time. They kiss, again in front of the lit fireplace at Veronica's apartment, after she has helped him with something important at which he was unsuccessful and comforts him about it.
  • Did They or Didn't They?: Jughead and Veronica make out and fall out of frame on Veronica's couch in the final shot, so they may have had sex.
    • It isn't clear whether or not Archie and Reggie hooked up with each other as well as with Twyla.
  • Indignant Slap: Inverted. Betty is struck by Alice after an argument. However, she stays cool and collected. Alice, on the other hand, is the one that is shook up.
  • Mr. Exposition: Clay in this episode, about the Beats.
  • Professional Sex Ed: It's inferred that Archie and Reggie get statutorily raped by the same adult sex worker that Archie rescued Kevin from and whom Julian's father made him get statutorily raped by as well.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: After Polly performs at the Babylonium and Alice misses it, Betty gives a massive one to Alice for freezing out Polly and not taking the opportunity to heal their family. She also states that she can't wait to graduate and leave so that she can do whatever she wants without Alice in her life. Alice slaps her hard in response.
  • Shout-Out:
  • Slut-Shaming: Cheryl once again shames Betty, and this time Polly, too, after learning that the latter is a famous burlesque dancer.
  • Wham Shot: Betty is stunned to see the star of the stag film is Polly.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: See "The Reason You Suck" Speech.
