Jughead and Ethel try to clear their names while Cheryl's lie about her and Archie's relationship status spirals out of control.

Tropes

  • Artistic License: "Unchained Melody" by The Righteous Brothers plays at several points in the episode, but it wasn't released until 1965.
  • The Big Damn Kiss: Jughead and Veronica's first kiss, in front of a fireplace, set to the climax of "Unchained Melody".
  • Differing Priorities Breakup: Betty breaks up with Kevin because she wants to have sex and Kevin says he wants to wait until marriage (but it's because he's gay). This is more the impetus than the chief reason as they've had problems for a while, again due to Incompatible Orientation.
  • Elopement: Archie suggests this to avoid the whole grand Blossom destiny being forced upon them. Cheryl agrees at first, but later backs out.
  • Foreshadowing: Betty's reaction to seeing Kevin and Clay slow dancing may have as much to do with her own unrealized feelings towards other women as much as her feelings about Kevin.
  • God Help Us All: Jughead says this to Veronica about the reality that only a truthful admission from Julian Blossom to the police can get Ethel freed from jail.
  • Good Girls Avoid Abortion: Abortion is never brought up as an option for Midge and her pregnancy. Instead, Toni helps Fangs to looks respectable and successful so that her parents will allow them to get married before Midge starts to show.
  • Held Gaze: Jughead and Veronica, after their first kiss.
  • Honorable Marriage Proposal:
    • Because of Cheryl's lie that she and Archie had sex, Mary Andrews and the Blossoms decide that Archie and Cheryl should get married, to 'preserve Cheryl's honour'. Archie doesn't want to get married, but goes along with it for Cheryl's sake.
    • When Midge is discovered to be pregnant, Fangs attempts this while not telling her parents about the pregnancy. They refuse and ban him from seeing their daughter.
  • Incompatible Orientation:
    • After seeing Kevin and Clay dance, and later reading Kingsley's book, Betty realises and understands that Kevin is gay.
    • This is also why Cheryl ends things with Archie as she realises she can't pretend or run from herself any longer.
  • Never My Fault: Julian confronts Archie on having sex with Cheryl at the makeout party. After Archie states they didn't, he points out that Julian was the one who encouraged him to pursue Cheryl.
  • The Reveal: Ethel's alibi is that Julian Blossom offered her a ride to the dance, but took her to Lovers Lane where they made out. But when Julian tried to get sex going, Ethel slapped him and left, with Julian threatening to ruin her life if she told anyone. So the only way to clear Ethel is to get Julian to tell the truth to the police.
  • Shout-Out:
    • The Thin Man: Veronica references the married protagonists and Jughead tells her it's one of his favourite films. They later flirtatiously refer to each other as that couple.
Veronica: We make a good team, Nick
    Jughead: Yes we do, Nora.
    • Little Orphan Annie: Jughead, although appreciative, feels a bit uneasy taking Veronica's charity.
Jughead: I do feel a bit like Little Orphan Annie in here
Veronica: Which makes me who? Daddy Warbucks?
  • Staying with Friends: Veronica offers that Jughead can stay with her and he does for one night. After Veronica fixes up his train car, she offers that he can still stay with her.
  • Teen Pregnancy: Midge is pregnant by Fangs.
