Jughead is outraged one of his stories is stolen for a comic book. A school sock hop leads to a new mystery.

Tropes

  • Abusive Parents: What little we see of Ethel’s parents speaks volumes. Her mother is sharp towards her and her father screams at her for skipping detention for a job interview at Pep Comics.
  • Artistic License: Betty tries to teach Archie the popular dance, "The Twist". The season takes place in 1955, but the dance is from 1959, following the 1958 hit song of the same title.
  • The Bus Came Back:
    • Midge returns after her death in "A Night To Remember"
    • Ethel Muggs returns for the first time in three seasons.
  • Closet Gay: Kevin and Cheryl are deep in the closet.
  • Fisticuff-Provoking Comment: How Archie reacts to Julian disparaging Archie's father, but Archie stops himself before the punch and leaves.
  • Heteronormative Crusader: Principal Featherhead looks askance at Cheryl and Toni sharing a dance at the sock hop and later makes pointed comments to Cheryl about boys and girls dancing together wholesomely "as God intended".
  • High-School Dance: The sock hop, where Kevin and Betty attend together and Fangs performs. Ethel walks in covered in blood which ends the dance.
  • Love-Obstructing Parents: Betty confides in Alice that she got butterflies dancing with Archie, and Alice gets a knowing look and intentionally tries to quash Betty's feelings by convincing Kevin to 'pin' her.
  • Make-Out Point: Everyone parks in the same spot and make out. Cheryl interrupts Fangs and Midge and is aghast, ordering Midge out, who obliges.
    • Kevin and Betty have a cold interaction ending with Betty storming off angry.
  • Mama Bear: After Mary learns that Archie was bullied at Veronica’s party, she calls Veronica out for her over the top behavior and callous attitude towards her son’s feelings.
  • Minor Living Alone: Jughead, now that he doesn't have his memories, living in an abandoned old train car.
  • Mocking the Mourner: Julian taunts Archie about Archie's father who died in the Korean War.
  • Moment Killer: Type 4. Alice barges in as Archie and Betty are slow dancing and gazing deeply into each other's eyes, and promptly sends Archie packing.
    • Cheryl kills Fangs and Midge's make-out session when she walks in on them in their car.
    • Ethel asks Jughead to the sock hop, and Jughead agrees, though seems less interested in Ethel than she in him. Regardless, the moment ends when her mother walks in.
  • Playing Hard to Get: Veronica, with the boys attracted to her. It blows up in her face spectacularly when Archie doesn't want to play games and his attraction to her fades as quickly as it appeared.
  • Serious Business: Veronica makes Archie and other boys go through a formal party to be her date to a sock hop.
  • Shown Their Work: While Alice convincing Kevin to ‘pin’ Betty sounds like her being a Control Freak, pinning someone was a real courtship custom in the 1950s. When a girl received a pin (such as a high school or college related one) from a boyfriend, it was a sign that they were in a serious relationship and would likely be married in the future.
  • Wistful Amnesia: While now believing himself a resident of this time, Jughead can't shake the feeling things aren't quite right.
