Luz Noceda has joined the party!

The Owl and The Frog by ChampionElCid is a crossover between The Owl House and Amphibia wherein after being expelled from her old school, Luz is enrolled at St. James School and becomes friends with Anne, Sasha and Marcy. All 4 girls are sent to Amphibia and Luz has to take to her new surroundings in order to find her friends and return home.

Following the completion of Arc 4, the author has confirmed that the story will have seven arcs in total and teased a potential sequel covering the events of The Owl House. Additionally, some chapters have been rewritten so flashback events are more in line with those of both series.

In addition to the main story, there's also a series of one-shots and a Spin-Off What If? series revolving around various what if scenarios based on the story.

The story can be found on FanFiction.Net here and on Archive of Our Own here.

The Owl and The Frog provides examples of:

  • Abhorrent Admirer: Maddie started out as this to Sprig, but eventually grew out of it.
  • Adaptational Angst Upgrade:
    • In canon Luz was clearly comfortable in her sexual orientation, being more flustered at the prospect of people flirting with her than whether they were male or female. Here, she does not realize this about herself until halfway through the first arc, and having her first crush on a girl leaves her with anxiety over the whole thing. Plus, rather than choosing to remain in the other world like in canon, Luz is dragged along to Amphibia when the girls open the Calamity Box, and spends the first few days desperately trying to survive. To make things worse, this occurred shortly after having a falling out with Anne.
    • In addition to being trapped in another world, Anne struggles with her sexuality after her kiss with Luz. She also has a more complicated friendship with her childhood Sasha here, who is jealous of her and Luz's relationship and also loves her secretly.
    • Amity gets this right off her debut: she's kidnapped and imprisoned by the Amphibian counterparts of her parents and treated like a science experiment, is given electric shocks as punishment should she or the other captured witches not comply with demands, and she has to repeatedly endure the other witches being tortured as Odalys and Alister drain them of their magic bile by injecting needles into their chests. Worse, she ends up getting possessed by the Core alongside Marcy.
  • Adaptational Heroism: While Eda openly rebelled against the Coven system in canon, it didn't go far beyond petty crime and refusing to join a Coven, mainly looking out for herself. Uodeela is much more proactive, being part of a rebellion against the toads' tyranny, and regularly intercepts their 'tax collections' to distribute the money back to the people.
  • Adaptational Jerkass: It's heavily implied in canon that Sasha's father actually cared for her, appearing with his former wife to see her when the trio returned from Amphibia, as it's stated in Marcy's Journal. Here, he's neglectful towards Sasha and decides to forget about her after getting divorced, even blaming Sasha on her own actions. It's to the point where Anne begins to depise him.
  • Adaptational Location Change: The premise of the series moves the Nocedas from Gravesfield, Connecticut to Los Angeles, California, where Amphibia's Earth portion takes place.
  • Adaptational Sexuality: While her orientation is left vague in the canon show, in this AU, Anne is shown to be either a lesbian or bisexual. This is shown as she admits to enjoying Luz's kiss, despite initially being shocked when it happened. She's later implied to return the latter's feelings upon reuniting.
    • Marcy also seems to be developing feelings for Amity.
  • Adaptational Villainy:
    • The author confirmed in a response to a comment for Arc 4's trailer that Sasha's a bit more malicious than in canon due to being influenced by The Voice.
    • Arc 5's trailer shows King Andrias stepping up his own villainous game, sending a Cloak-Bot to the Boiling Isles to kidnap witchlings around the girls' age to examine like the other creatures his ancestors stole from other worlds.
    • In the show, Alador is shown to be goofy and hyperfocused on his experiements, leading him to ignore his daughter Amity. He's willing to do better and stands up to Odalia once she revealed to be aiding Belos' genocide plan. Here, he's a willing accomplice of Odalys in aiding Andrias’ invasion of Earth.
    • Downplayed with Grime. While the show's already established him as a ruthless toad lord from the start, he's shown more of his antagonistic actions here.
  • Adaptation Deviation: Some details are different from canon as either they are not revealed by the time of writing or the author purposely changes them.
    • In the show, Anne's birthday and the time the girls are transported to Amphibia are around May 21 to June 21 as she's revealed to be a Gemini in Marcy's Journal: A Guide to Amphibia. Here, her birthday is around September or October as she has her birthday after her 8th grade's homecoming note . As a result, even though the events in the show still happen, they are pushed backward for several months. The Plantars and Amara also noticeably stay on Earth for a much longer time because of this.
    • Sasha's parents are implied to be divorced or separated when she was young. Here, they divorced after Sasha and her friends disappeared.
    • In Marcy's Journal, Marcy's parents put off moving and stay in Los Angeles after their daughter went missing. Here, they move away due to guilt.
    • Despite being a clone, Hunter's a teenager who lived through his past 16 years with training to be the Golden Guard. Here, he's a clone whose physical appearance is a 15-year-old teenager at birth.
  • Adaptation Expansion:
    • The first arc takes place entirely within the human realm, and expands on incidents that were alluded to in canon.
      • The girls all have a sleepover at Sasha's, with the Scare Dare challenge being to sit in an old house for fifteen minutes without any light.
      • The school dance is where Luz wears her otter costume, which she mentions was previously used as a Halloween costume.
      • Sasha's parents appear, which they never do in canon.
      • St James. Middle School is revealed to be a Catholic private school, something never addressed in the show.
    • Uodeela explains how magic works in Amphibia, revolving around the use of potions and curses. Though there are rare cases where people (such as herself) can bond with magic gems, letting them perform the more commonly imagined form of magic.
    • The frog rebellion alluded to in Amphibia is given more focus here, with Uodeela and Valeriana being members. We even see them meeting up with an informant to discuss spreading the word of Hop Pop running against Toadstool.
    • Sasha's armor and sword receive backstories with the armor having been meant for Percy's son and the sword being made specifically for slaying herons, bearing the name "Orcrist the Heron Cleaver".
    • Grime's army have another reason for abandoning him besides the events of "Reunion": losing a battle thanks to one of Sasha's friends and blaming her for it, losing their belief in Grime's leadership.
      • In addition, the reason Percy and Braddock stay with Grime and Sasha is because they're spying on them for the rebellion with Gustav.
    • An explanation why Anne and Hop Pop drove Bessie for 20 hours straight in "Night Drivers" is given; because Anne wanted to meet up with Luz so bad.
    • The parents' reaction after the girls disappeared are shown in one of the one-shots.
    • Camila is revealed to be one of the Immigrant Parents, something that isn't addressed in the show.
    • Luz and Anne are revealed to be undergoing homeschooling through online courses to avoid suspicion of their reappearance at school, as well as hide the fact that they're dating.
  • Adaptation Relationship Overhaul:
    • In canon, Willow and Amity were childhood friends who were forced to end their friendship, grew apart and eventually renewed it as teenagers. Here, Lilly and Amara met as teenagers and were rivals during their apprenticeship for the first few weeks until Luz showed up.
    • Anne and Sasha's relationship becomes tenser here because of the Love Triangle involving them and Luz.
    • Amara is shown to be an only child as the Amphibian counterpart of Emira and Edric, Amity's older siblings, are no where to be seen in the story.
    • Uodeela is also an only child as there's confirmed to be no Amphibian counterpart of Lilith by the author. Same can also be said to Amara.
    • Gus's father is a reporter named Perry. His amphibia counterpart's father is Percy, an Amphibia character established as one of Grime's soliders.
    • Amity ends up having Ship Tease with Marcy as Luz is paired up with Anne in the fic.
  • Adaptation Species Change: The characters from The Owl House are natives to Amphibia, and are each one of the native species rather than witches or demons like in their home series. To elaborate:
    • Willow is a blue frog named Lilly.
    • Gus is a short green toad named Gustav.
    • Amity is a pink newt named Amara Light. Her parents, Odalia and Alador, are known as Lady Odalys (who's also pink) and Lord Alister (who has green skin).
    • Eda is a black-spotted red salamander named Uodeela. Instead of transforming into an owl beast against her will due to a curse, Uodeela willingly turns into a red heron via a special curse/potion combo.
    • In a non-Owl House example, Valeriana is changed from a newt to a salamander.
    • Hooty is a snail, but it keeps his name due to the fact that it hoots like an owl.
  • Adapted Out: Zig-Zagged. Several Amphibia season 3A episodes like "Thai Feud", "Fight at the Museum", "Mr. X", "Sprig's Birthday", "Spider-Sprig" and "Hollywood Hop Pop" are either that or incorporated into some chapters with some remained element.
  • Age Lift: No, "regression". Luz is aged down a year at the beginning of the story along with Anne, who's still 12. By the end of Arc 1, all four girls are 13 years old.
  • Alternate Self: Per Word of God, the Amphibian counterparts are this to the Owl House characters, explicitly stating that they are not one-to-one correspondents to their canon counterparts, which is why their names are changed as well as their species.
    • Word of God has also stated that King Andrias is Emperor Belos' counterpart.
    • When asked about whether Lilith Clawthorne has her own Amphibian counterpart, the response was that the closest would be Valeriana, since she's the only other known salamander character in Amphibia.
    • Word of God has stated that Lady Olivia and General Yunan are Kikimora and Hunter's counterparts respectively.
  • Alternate Universe: Chapter 50 reveals that the main point of divergence (POD) concerning the Nocedas is that Camila and Manny decided against going to Gravesfield for Manny's treatment.
  • Ambiguous Situation: The one-shot "Sasha's Advice" has a scene in which Sasha suggests to practice kissing with Anne, leaving the latter confused. Futhermore, Luz implies that Sasha might have a crush on Anne too, not just her. It's no longer ambiguous as of "The Fourth Temple", as Sasha is confirmed to have a crush on Anne.
  • Amicable Exes: Flashbacks following the rewrites make King Andrias and Sheresade a potentially subverted case. Engaged in an arranged marriage, the two fell in love and were meant to be wed after Prince Andrias conquered Earth. However when Leif stole the Calamity Box and Sheresade touched it and ended up seeing the same vision Leif saw of Amphibia's supposed destruction, she escaped with Leif and hid the box on Earth before going into exile. Worst of all, Sheresade had laid an egg so Andrias never got to meet the daughter she raised.
  • An Aesop:
    • Forgiveness is necessary if you want to let go of your regrets and negative emotions. Luz and Anne are willing to let go of their mistakes and become better people after forgiving each other.
    • Discrimination affects all kinds of people. It takes the efforts from people who are willing to change the situation to be able to do so.
    • Mental health problems is important and shouldn't be ignored. Toxic positivity has a huge negative effect on people as it only buries unresolved problems and shut others away in the process. Sasha's problems become worse as she tends to ignore them, and Luz requires help from her friends due to her traumatic experiences.
  • Ascended Extra: The Frog Rebellion, Valeriana, Bella the Bellhop, Sasha's parents, Percy and Braddock are given more prominent roles in the story. Special mention to Percy, who's revealed to be Gustav's father.
  • Author Avatar: The Lyft Driver that appears throughout the story is confirmed to be one.
  • Back from the Dead:
    • Lilly is brought back to life via the Elixer of Life a few minutes after being stabbed to death by Fens.
    • Sasha is also brought back to life via this method after having to impale herself so she can be free of Belos' possession over her.
  • Big Damn Kiss: Downplayed. Chapter 7 ends with Luz giving a sleeping Anne a goodnight kiss on the cheek before going to sleep herself. Played straight in Chapter 9 where Luz kisses Anne on the lips at the school dance, which causes a rift in their friendship.
    • It comes full circle in Chapter 41 where in another downplayed example, Anne kisses Luz's cheek while she's unconscious and recovering from her fight with Beatrix to show she's decided to enter a relationship with her.
  • Breaking Old Trends: The first three arcs each had a set of 10 chapters. "Arc 4: Gem Journey" breaks the pattern by having 11, with the events of "True Colors" being split into two parts.
  • Breaking the Fellowship: Chapter 27 is named this, as it features Uodeela's apprentices going their seperate ways: Lilly asks her father if they can drop Luz off in Wartwood to find Anne before returning to the rebellion where she'll train, Gustav agrees to go spy on Grime and Sasha with his father and his girlfriend and Amara decides to return to Newtopia to find a cure for Uodeela's curse. It happens again in "Chapter 41: True Colors (Part 2)" as Gustav leaves to regroup with the rebellion and misses out on King Andrias announcing his intent to conquer other worlds, Lilly helps Sasha and Grime fight Andrias while Marcy opens a portal to Earth, and Amara (despite slight hesitance), gets sent to Earth with Luz, Anne, the Plantars and Frobo's decapitated severed head.
  • Brought Down to Normal: During the Battle of Tadpole Pond, Grime manages to steal Uodeela's staff and destroy her magic gem, making her vulnerable to the toad soldiers' attacks.
  • Central Theme: In addition to themes of both shows, more have been put in this story:
    • Forgiveness. One must try to forgive in order to let go of one's heartache. Luz and Anne are willing to let go of their mistakes and become better people after forgiving each other.
    • Generational Trauma. It may be subtle, but it has great influence over one's home life. Anne and Luz want to live up to their Immigrant Parents' expectations due to how hard they had to work to earn their life in the US, Sasha develops controlling behavior due to her neglectful home life, and Amara realizes her past actions stemmed from her classist parents.
    • Fighting for your own rights. If one wants to change their current situation, one must work hard to fight back. The Frog Rebellion is shown to be fighting back after frogs grew tired of being oppressed for so long in the Fantastic Caste System.
    • Effects of discrimination. Discrimination has invaded different aspects of life and shouldn't be ignored. Amara learned this after realizing her teachings from her classist background is wrong. Luz and Anne also struggle in their home life partly because of their ethnicities.
  • Character Focus: Based on the opening pieces, each arc focuses on one of the four girls. So far the first 2 arcs focus on Luz, Arc 3 focuses on Sasha, Arc 4 is centered on Marcy, and Arc 5 doubles up on Luz & Anne while later focusing on Sasha in the second half.
  • Coming-Out Story: Luz did research and found several of these online in order to figure out her feelings for Anne following the sleepover. She eventually realizes she's bisexual since she's always been attracted to guys up until that point.
  • Commonality Connection:
    • Luz quickly bonds with Anne due to their love of The Legend of Korra and Marcy over a shared love of the "Good Witch Azura" series, with the two even collaborating on a fanfic together.
    • Camila and Mrs. Boonchuy bond over being immigrants to America in search of a better life (Being Dominican and Thai respectively) as well as having very energetic daughters.
    • Gustav and Amara are revealed to have bonded over a series of music sessions. The two practice with their respective instruments, an ocarina and harp.
    • As with Luz, Marcy instantly clicks with Amity due their love of Azura, which acts as a statring point to their potentially budding romance.
  • Commuting on a Bus: With the exception of Luz, every main character has been swapped out for others over the course of the story: Arc 2 swaps Anne, Sasha and Marcy out with Uodeela, Lilly, Gustav and Amara. At the end of Arc 3, those four are replaced with the returning Anne & Marcy along with the Plantars and in Arc 5, Marcy is swapped back out for Amara.
  • Connected All Along:
    • The rewrite of "Elixirs and Potions" retcons Uodeela into being Andrias's granddaughter.
    • Gustav's father is Percy, and he's been helping Uodeela by giving her the tax collection schedule as payment for teaching his son magic.
    • Emmanuel, the blue frog and informant of Uodeela organizing the rebellion, is later revealed to be Lilly's father.
  • Crossover Couple: As of "Arc 5: Home", Luz and Anne, the protagonists of both series, are dating each other.
  • Crossover Power Acquisition: Luz obtains her own kind of Calamity powers from the Calamity Box's fourth gem, which manifest in her Elemental Powers.
  • Crush Blush: Luz starts to have these when she develops a crush on Anne, who eventually sports some of her own.
    • Andrias and Sheresade had some during the course of their relationship.
    • Sasha displays some of her own once her crush on Anne becomes known.
    • Marcy and Amity have a few mutual instances as they are in the midst of escaping Newtopia Castle with Olivia and Yunan.
  • Cuteness Proximity: Both Anne and Marcy gush over Luz's hoodie the first time they see her wearing it. Anne also calls Luz cute when she imitates an otter and Luz fawned over Domino when she saw her for the first time.
  • Darker and Edgier: The story provides more adult and mature themes such as racism, classism and homophobia. It also has a fair amount of mental health being incorporated into the story.
  • Death by Adaptation:
    • Instead of living beyond the events of "Toad to Redemption", Fens is torn limb from limb and eaten by the Red Heron as vengeance for killing Lilly.
    • Captain Bufo lives up to the events of "All In" in canon. Here, he gets decapitated by General Yunan in the first half of "True Colors".
    • Captain Aldo is killed by Andrias' castle cannon in the second half of "True Colors".
  • Death Is Cheap: The Elixer of Life can bring anyone back to life, which is why Uodeela makes enough for her and her students.
  • Demonic Possession:
    • In "Chapter 51: Curing the Curse", Sasha ends up falling under and resisting Belos as he attempts to possess her so he can slay her allies due to magic existing in Amphibia.
    • The following chapter follows up with Marcy becoming the Core's host body, but doubles up on it by having it possess Amity at the same time in order to use magic.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: Belos wanted Sasha to join him as a soldier in order to set up her and Hunter, believing that Caleb's betrayal (and that of every other grimwalker) stems from his brother "being bewitched into falling in love with a witch". This is a subtle reference to real-life LGBT people who are forced into straight marriage by people who thinks this help them become straight.
  • Dreaming of Things to Come: Through the use of prophecy potions, Maddie makes predictions regarding the Calamity Quartet but she doesn't remember what she says after reciting them. Her first use of them predicted their arrival in Amphibia, and her second predicted that one of them will die.
  • Easing into the Adventure: Arc 1 as a whole slowly builds towards the girls journeying to Amphibia by integrating Luz into Anne's friend group before that happens.
  • Elemental Powers: Uodeela's gem grants her these abilities, and she uses them in a battle. Using potions activated by her Calamity gem powers grants Luz these same abilities. Potions and glyphs allow the rest of Uodeela's apprentices and Marcy the same option.
    • Blow You Away: Wind power. With the Elixer of Air, the user creates wind blasts, air blades, and can jump over large distances and land easily. Due to her love of Korra, this became Luz's go-to power. Marcy later gains access to this through using the wind glyph.
    • Green Thumb: Plant power. So far, the only ability shown is growing and using vines like whips or restraints.
    • An Ice Person: Ice power. Creation of ice pillars, throwing pieces of ice like projecties and making ice patches enemies slip on. It can also be used to create snow.
    • Light 'em Up: Light power, namely creating orbs of light and blinding flashes. Naturally for Luz, this is the first ability she gets in both using potions and glyphs.
    • Making a Splash: Water power. The user creates water blasts and tidal waves. Lilly gains such power due to wielding the Masamune while Gustav learns the glyph.
    • Playing with Fire: Fire power. The Elixer of Fire gives the ability to create fireballs, fire rings and a flamethower-style blast from one's hands.
  • Fan Art: One of the reviewers, CMR Rosa, not only commissioned a cover picture but a whole gallery folder for character pictures from this story here.
  • Fantastic Racism: Following the rewrites, Sheresade has a deep grudge against humans due to Philip Wittebane betraying and nearly murdering her. It's subverted after she meets kinder humans while hiding the Calamity Box on Earth long before his time.
  • Forced to Watch:
    • Luz is forced to watch her mentor Uodeela being hurt by toads.
    • As The Voice Belos starts to influence Sasha, readers are forced to see Sasha goes down a darker path.
  • Forceful Kiss: This is what causes the fallout between Luz and Anne, as Luz kisses her during a dance trying to show how her feelings for Anne have changed.
  • Forgiveness: After reuniting in Chapter 30, Luz and Anne finally apologize for their falling out now knowing the whole truth.
  • Foreshadowing:
    • While on a hike over the summer, Luz spots an owl that is described similarly to Owlbert, while Anne finds a red frog that appears to vaguely resemble Sprig.
    • Comedic case. Several times Luz and Anne note how horrible it would be to have to move about with just one shoe.
    • At one point, Luz asks the other girls if they can imagine fighting each other. They all laugh it off.
    • The Calamity Box has four gems instead of three, with the fourth being a purple color.
    • One of the treasures Valeriana collects during her travels is a frog palisman, as evident by the interlock on its foot.
    • The Voice Sasha keeps hearing tells her to use the Calamity Box to send Luz to his world.
  • Fusion Fic: Between Amphibia and The Owl House.
  • Gayngst: Both Luz and Anne suffer this due to the Homecoming incident and become afraid that their sexuality won't be accepted by their parents.
  • Good Is Not Soft: Amara was a Jerkass at her worst, and becomes significantly nicer after her Character Development. Nevertheless, during "The Battle of Tadpole Pond!" she shows zero hesitation blinding Fens and leading Uodeela in her heron form to her, especially after the toad nearly killed Lilly.
  • Greater-Scope Villain: Emperor Belos is the mysterious voice that Sasha's been hearing. By manipulating her feelings, he pushes her into sending Luz to the Boiling Isles with the Calamity Box so he can use her to learn the light, wind and water glyphs through the Stable Time Loop.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: After losing the scare dare challenge and hearing a strange voice, Sasha starts to become paranoid that Luz will steal Anne and Marcy's friendship from her. It gets to the point that upon learning of Luz crushing on Anne, Sasha sets her up to make a fool of herself, then convinces a distraught Anne to end her friendship with Luz. It gains even more ground with the implications that Sasha has a crush on Anne, too.
  • Hand Wave: Somehow Sheresade met Philip Wittebane in the past, which is strange given how Sheresade lived 1,000 years ago while Philip existed in the 16th century. Word of God decided to make this the explanation unless they come up with something else, which led to a retcon that Sheresade fell into a time pool that took her to the Deadwardian Era while scouting out the Boiling Isles 1,000 years in the past.
  • Hate Sink:
  • Hearing Voices: Sasha hears one which freaks her out enough to lose a Scare Dare Challenge. She soon begins to hear it more often, brushing it off as either someone else speaking or strange thoughts. It's later shown to be Belos communicating with her from the Boiling Isles.
  • Heroes Prefer Swords: The Masamune is a legendary blade used by Glen the Frog Knight and only a worthy frog can wield his sword after pulling it from a stone in the third temple. Lilly becomes that very frog when she succeeds.
  • Hidden Depths: The Lyft Driver is surprisingly good at counseling and helps Luz work out her self-loathing, coming from his own personal experiences. He is also revealed to have gone to a prestigious acting academy at eighteen.
  • I Have This Friend: A variant. When telling her mom about kissing her crush Anne at the dance, Luz instead says it was a guy who kissed her instead in an attempt to get unbiased advice.
  • In Spite of a Nail: In spite of the different events and magic systems in place in Amphibia, Luz's first proper spell is still forming a ball of light.
    • Anne's still the last of her friends to go through a Significant Wardrobe Shift.
    • Andrias claims the Calamity Box with the intent of conquering other worlds and reveals Marcy's Dark Secret, Anne unlocks her Calamity powers when Andrias tries to kill Sprig, Sasha and Grime fight him off while Marcy opens a portal to Earth, and Andrias impales Marcy while Anne and the Plantars are sent to Earth.
    • Luz will go to the Boiling Isles, go back in time and teach Philip Wittebane the light glyph to ensure his rise to power as Emperor Belos.
    • While Anne and the Plantars are on Earth, Sasha and Grime start up La Résistance against Andrias and Marcy is eventually possessed by the Core.
  • I've Come Too Far: The main reason for Sasha's Redemption Rejection below, feeling she's already burned her bridges, so she might as well keep on her current path.
  • I Will Find You: Chapter 20 (and Arc 2 by extension) ends with Luz and Anne vowing to find each other and make amends.
  • Love Triangle: Over the course of the story, one grows between Luz, Anne and Sasha: Luz falls for Anne early on, becoming Luz's first female crush which happens because Anne's her first real friend and they get along very well. This gets picked up by Sasha, who becomes jealous of Luz as she's also crushing on Anne and actively sabotages their friendship to cause a falling out between them so she can have Anne for herself. However, Anne slowly shows signs that she returns Luz's feelings and they grow closer, with Anne ultimately choosing Luz at the end of Arc 4.
  • Maybe Ever After: Discussed. At the end of Arc 3, Anne tells Luz that she wants to wait until they return home and she figures out her orientation before deciding whether they should date or not, knowing she's basically saying "maybe". But given the reaction she has when Luz takes her hand while helping her stand up, it's strongly implied that Anne does return Luz's feelings.
  • Missed Him by That Much: Often Played for Drama.
    • In Chapter 18, Valeriana meets Luz and tells her she'll keep an eye out for her friends. By the time she meets Anne at the Bizarre Bazaar, her shoddy memory has caused her to forget that vow.
    • In Chapter 20, Luz and her companions are traveling through the Misty Moors searching for the Moss Man at the same time as Anne and Wally. Both girls hear the other's voice and try to find each other only to come across illusions of each other. After witnessing their final moments together before being sent to Amphibia and reaffirming their desire to apologize to each other, they're led out of the mist by their friends without ever realizing how close they were to reuniting.
    • In Chapter 28, Amara has just returned to Newtopia where she meets Marcy, then Anne. Amara informs the girls that Luz is journeying to Wartwood in search of Anne, then lampshades how had Luz come to Newtopia with her, she would've already reunited with her friends.
    • In Chapter 37, Lilly, Gustav, Emmanuel, Percy, and Braddock arrive at the third temple moments after Luz, Anne, Marcy, and the Plantars left, so Luz, Lilly and Gustav don't get to meet up or reunite.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Luz has this after she kisses Anne, realizing her act of impulsiveness may have ruined their friendship. Sasha seems to have one for setting Luz up.
    • Anne slowly undergoes this herself during her time in Amphibia. After rewatching the moment she ended her friendship with Luz in the Misty Moors, Anne realizes how cowardly she had been and how much she really hurt Luz, leaving her guilt-ridden and worried Luz won't forgive her when they meet again.
  • Mythology Gag: Naturally, the story includes references to both its parent shows.
    • Each arc ends with the text "End of Arc #", like how both seasons of Amphibia end with "End of Part #".
    • Uodeela teaches her apprentices magic through brewing potions. This is a nod to Eda's specialization in potions which she learned at Hexside.
    • Luz's reaction when seeing Domino for the first time is the same as when she met King in "A Lying Witch and a Warden".
    • Luz's cloak that comes with her Significant Wardrobe Shift looks like her magic-repelling Badass Cape that Eda made for her in "Agony of a Witch".
    • Lady Odalys' name is the origin name of Odalia, and its meaning "wealth".
  • Named by the Adaptation: Sprig and Polly's parents become posthumously known as Anura and Victor.
  • Oblivious Guilt Slinging: Throughout Arc 4, Luz and Anne unknowingly make Marcy feel guilty about intentionally getting them sent to Amphibia as she didn't think about how the girls would feel, much less about her doing it to avoid moving.
    • Whenever Raine plays a song while adding in their magic, they add in their own emotions, which effects whoever's listening. When adding their feelings of loss and pain, it causes those listening (such as Amara, Lilith, ex.) to become overwhelmed by their inner turmoil. They try to weaponize this on Emperor Belos, but he's barely moved because he's numb from all the trauma he caused.
  • Once a Season: Each arc has a vignette chapter containing at least 5 short stories.
  • Orwellian Retcon: Chapters 12, 14, 15, and 33 were rewritten so the events of the past were more accurate to both shows' takes: instead of Sheresade being the friend of Andrias who distracted him while Leif and Barrel stole the Calamity Box, she was his wife to be who held a hatred for humanity thanks to Philip Wittebane and would later side with Leif in hiding the box after seeing the vision of Amphibia's moon. Sheresade later had a daughter with Andrias being the father, and Uodeela would become his granddaughter.
    • Uodeela's reasons for attacking Andrias upon seeing his motives were also altered because of this. While working on making a new Calamity Box, Uodeela's reasons for siding against Andrias went from him trying to take her gem for a power source to the Core ordering him to have her inducted into it as a substitute for Sheresade so it can have her knowledge of magic.
  • Parents as People: Sasha has issues with her father, mainly stemming from the fact that he's so busy with work he rarely has time for her. However, both he and her mother make it clear that this is to ensure his family has plenty of financial security, which she somewhat understands, and both father and daughter are excited at having time for lunch together. He gives her well-meaning advice about using flattery to form relationships and mentions giving donations to the school to ensure they go easy on her, but in doing so unintentionally undermines her confidence in her own abilities and she misinterprets his advice on business relationships as advice on personal relationships.
  • Perspective Flip: While in the Misty Moors, Luz and Anne are each shown alternative angles of the moments that led to their falling out, which they both missed: Luz is shown Anne's reaction to the kiss while Anne is shown Luz's reaction to her ending their friendship.
  • Point of Divergence: What kicks off the story is one of the spiders from Luz's 'spider-breath' griffin model biting a student and giving him an allergic reaction. Following this the principal expels her, and her mother manages to get her enrolled at St. James School.
    • Rather than convincing Anne to stay with her in Newtopia instead of returning to Wartwood with the Planters, Marcy supports her decision to go upon learning Luz is traveling to Wartwood to find Anne.
    • Hop Pop manages to recover the Calamity Box before the magpie beetle steals it and aside from Anne finding dirt in it, she doesn't suspect anything and their falling out never occurs. When he does attempt to confess, Anne stops him before forgiving him for it, so the girls never learn the truth.
    • It's revealed in a flashback that Sheresade distracted King Andrias while his other companions stole the Calamity Box, then split up with the frog taking the box and considering taking it to another world. "The Core & The King" reveals that Leif (the frog) stole it single-handedly and Barrel (the toad) was send to the outskirts by then-Prince Andrias for not stopping her. This is later retconned so that the latter events occured.
    • Luz discovers glyph magic before she travels to the Boiling Isles.
    • Lilith, Emperor Belos and the coven heads, notably Raine Whispers, debut long before Luz enters the Boiling Isles.
    • Rather than Bernardo giving Anne a new look that culminates in her wearing just a chestplate with her damaged sword, Anne receives pieces of Plantar family armor and takes to using the sword Tritonio gave her.
    • Instead of possessing Marcy alone, the Core decides to possess both Marcy and Amity to gain their wit and access to magic respectively.
  • Pop-Cultural Osmosis Failure: Anne and Luz believe The Legend of Korra is an anime. While it and its parent work were anime-inspired, they were animated series.
  • Pragmatic Adaptation:
    • "Chapter 32: Frobo and the Toads" fuses together "Friend or Frobo" and "Toad to Redemption", with Polly, Luz and Sprig finding Frobo and learning the toad army is in the forest near Wartwood, ready to invade.
    • "Chapter 39: Dinner and a Show" combines parts of "The Dinner" and "Battle of the Bands": the former's aforementioned dinner party is the only scene that remains while the latter has the girls practicing for the titular event and their performance in it.
  • Purple Is Powerful:
    • Bearing the power of the purple Calamity gem of Courage, Luz becomes a force to be reckoned with when her powers allow her to start utilizing potions that give her elemental abilities.
    • Sheresade, Uodeela's grandmother, is a purple newt who's implied to have the same connection and utilized wild magic and thus, glyphs.
  • Redemption Rejection: Luz's attempts to get Sasha to call off the attack on Tadpole Pond fail, with Sasha leading the charge despite her hesitation.
  • Relationship Upgrade: "True Colors: Part 2" hints this for Luz and Anne after the latter finally decides to date the former and is made official in the next chapter.
  • Reset Button: The Elixer of Life, a rare elixer that can bring back someone from the dead.
  • Retcon: Along with everything qualifying for Orwellian Retcon, Mr. and Mrs. Boonchuy are now known as Bee and Oum after initially being called Jeff and Mae.
  • Shipper on Deck: Sprig, Polly and Marcy all hint/show their full support for Luz and Anne after learning how things are between them.
  • Ship Tease:
    • Anne and Luz have some near the end of Arc 1: Anne ends up being Luz's first crush to be a girl, which leads to her discovering her bi orientation and their fallout due to a Forceful Kiss when trying to confess. Before this, there are small hints that Anne likes Luz back but doesn't realize it yet and after, she becomes confused on how she really feels about Luz. It starts up again at the end of Arc 3, when the girls meet again and make up with Anne promising she'll consider them dating once they get home.
    • Arc 5 has Marcy starting to have some with Amity after they start to bond while in captivity.
    • Also in Arc 5, Amara admits to having feelings for Bella the Bellhop, an attraction that turns out to be mutual.
  • Shout-Out:
    • Luz and Anne are both fans of The Legend of Korra, even discussing it during their first meeting.
    • A famous play in Amphibia about a frog hero named Glenn is inspired by Chrono Trigger.
    • While the toads are fighting Uodeela's heron form, one mentions Sasha based their tactics off that one show where humans fight giants with grappling hooks.
    • Two nods are made to Sam Raimi's Spider-Man;
      • In Chapter 8, when Luz is taking a picture of her, Anne says "Don't make me look ugly," and Luz quietly says "That would be impossible." This is the exact first interaction between Mary Jane Watson and Peter Parker.
      • In Chapter 41, Andrias has a moment not unlike the movie's climax: the villain (Andrias/Green Goblin) forces the hero (Anne/Spidey) to choose between saving either the one they love (Luz/Mary Jane) or a child (Sprig/the kids in the cable car) from an impending fall and drops both for good measure.
    • The What If? spinoff series takes inspiration from What If…? (2021), with the Calamity Guardian in the role the Watcher plays.
  • Significant Wardrobe Shift: Luz has to wear the St. James school uniform (sporting the same skirt and collar colors as Anne's) when she starts attending and it gets stained when she arrives in Amphibia. Later before Luz sets off for Wartwood to meet up with Anne, Lilly, Gustav and Amara give her a new outfit, complete with new boots, gloves, a cloak, and accessories, as seen here.
    • In "Here, There, and Elsewhere", Anne dons some of Polianna Plantar's armor consisting of a chestplate with the family's insignia, gauntlets and boots, complete with Tritonio's sword.
  • Skewed Priorities: When Amara tells her mother Odalys that she lost her tail after being attacked by a heron (one of the most dangerous predators in Amphibia), the newt is more appalled that her daughter walked around tailless in public than the fact that she was almost killed.
  • The Stations of the Canon: All the events of Amphibia for Seasons 1 and 2A that don't involve Luz still occur normally.
  • Supporting Protagonist: Anne starts off as the Deuteragonist of the series only to be Put on a Bus in Arcs 2 & 3 before reclaiming said role in Arc 4. The Plantars haven't played large roles in the story yet.
  • Take That!:
    • When Luz and Marcy post the first chapter of their fanfic, Marcy is outraged when the first review they get simply said 'Good story. Please continue.' She then goes into a rant about how unhelpful such reviews are since they do nothing to help the writer improve or identify the parts people liked.
    • When discussing how a popular play in Amphibia about a frog hero typically has a newt play the lead (despite being the wrong species), Luz compares it to Hollywoods whitewashing of character roles from minorities in bigger movies. She specifically mentions a film where an Asian character was replaced with a Caucasian actor, and they all agree the practice is insulting.
    • Bella mentions that despite graduating from Newtopia University, she's up to her eyeballs in debt from student loans. Odalys (Amara's Rich Bitch mother) is revealed to have deliberately rigged the system so anyone not from a high class family will need to accept loans with an absurd interest rate and remain in debt for years afterwards.
    • Cynthia Coven's author is said to have been involved in a scandal that led to Luz being unable to enjoy the series now. This is based off the controversy that's been surrounding J. K. Rowling since 2019.
    • Maddie goes on a very long, detailed tangent about getting obsessed with finding the identity of the author of a mysterious journal to the point of making a deal with a demon to learn the name. Luz and Marcy agree that would be really stupid.
    • One of the vignettes featured in Chapter 50 has Luz and Anne showing Sprig and Amara the internet. At one point, they encounter a fanfiction called "Loyalty Among Covens" by CaptainCT5 in which, after reading a few chapters, have a conversation in which not only they discuss the fanfictions poor quality but also the fact that the author created a self insert and shipped them with a teenager whilst being in their late 20s as well as mocking the poor quality of the artwork created by CaptainCT5. This is an obvious jab at Loyalty Among Worlds, a fanfiction by AdmiralDT8, who's notorious in the Amphibia fandom for starring a self insert of AdmiralDT8 whom is in their late 20s and shipping said insert with Anne whom is 13 as well as the fanbase's overall consensus that artwork is of subpar quality despite the author being a college graduate.
  • Tragic Keepsake: To go with Luz's new outfit, her friends give her Uodeela's staff (the bottom of which was fashioned into a spear at Amara's suggestion) so she'll have something to remember her mentor by when she returns home.
    • One month after the girls disappeared, Camila found Luz's drawing of Anne. She frames it and gives it to Oum so she can give it to Anne when she returns home.
  • Vignette Episode: Some chapters are comprised of short stories detailing significant events, those being Chapters 6 (which contains 5 stories), 19 (with 6), 28 (with 7), 36 and 49 (both with 9). The one-shot, "Three New Students", has three stories.
  • The Voice: Ever since she first heard it in the abandoned house, Sasha starts hearing a strange voice in her head more often. At first she thinks it's just herself but in Chapter 35, she starts to question it. It's eventually revealed that it's Emperor Belos speaking to her, as he found a way to talk with her despite being in different realms.
  • What If?: A series revolving around this trope is now in play, where the Calamity Guardian peers into Alternate Timelines depicting what could occur if some things were to change certain events.
  • What Is This Feeling?: While dancing with Anne at the sleepover, Luz begins feeling nervous around her and eventually realizes her feelings have turned into a crush. After Luz kisses her at the dance, Anne begins to wonder if she feels the same way towards Luz.
  • Will They or Won't They?: Luz and Anne, as of Chapter 30, have fallen into this. At the end of Arc 4, Anne decides to date Luz.
