Go To

Charms Dealer is the skeleton of fighting game created by KingFezProductions on DeviantArt. It's gimmick is fighting with weapons enchanted by elemental magic by trinkets called "Charms", such as literal water guns or an electric chainsaw.

Charms Dealer contains examples of:

  • Acting for Two:
    • In CD2 and CD3, Cristina Valenzuela voices both Alexa and Ladybug. This is lampshaded by both in their respective winquotes.
Alexa: We sound alike, right? I'm not just hearing things?
Ladybug: Huh, we totally sound alike. Weird.
    • In CD2, Tara Strong voices both Park and Arizona.
  • Actor Allusion:
  • Anthropomorphic Food: Sandwichero, a living sandwich.
  • Artificial Human: Jacob from CD3 is a homunculus made by the Vatican.
  • Back from the Dead: Geiger, Vince von Berg, and Toxman as DLC for CD3.
  • Badass in a Nice Suit: 86 in the first game, and Agent Han in CD3, due to their secret agent inspirations.
  • Badass Normal: The characters who don't possess Charms:
    • Horace, Park, Nick, Levatio, Sandwichero, MacKenzie, and 86 in Charms Dealer.
    • Horace, Park, MacKenzie, and Marissa in CD2.
  • Bare-Fisted Monk: Marissa, who enters a magical fighting tournament armed with only her fists, and doesn't use implements like Horace or Nick.
  • Bastard Bastard: Sister Eva, as her conception was not overseen by the Vatican unlike Templar's.
  • Batter Up!: Ivan's weapon.
  • Battle Boomerang: Charlie's weapon, due to his love of Australia.
  • BFS: Eva's weapon, to differentiate from Templar.
  • Bilingual Bonus: The Korean characters that appear in Park's Raging Tantrum "소금", are Korean for salt.
  • Brain Uploading: How Vince von Berg returns in CD3, now being in a robot.
  • Cane Fu: Used by Vince von Berg.
  • Carry a Big Stick:
    • Geiger's PL Hammer with a head of plutonium.
    • Caleb wields a shillelagh, fitting of an Irishman.
  • Chekhov's Gunman:
    • In addition to the There Is Another moment below, Sister Eva also appears in Horace's ending fighting Park.
    • Ninnhursag appears in Paul's ending in 2 as "Nature".
  • Cool Sword: Templar's Sword of the Cloth. Also an Ancestral Weapon, being wielded by previous Templars.
    • 2 gives us Eva's Sword of the Inferno, a broadsword with her Charm as part of the hilt.
  • Chainsaw Good: Rooker's weapon.
  • Church Militant: Templar's job. CD2 introduces another, Sister Eva. CD3's Closeout DLC would reveal a third, Jacob.
  • Corrupt Corporate Executive: Vince von Berg.
  • Crowbar Combatant: Toxman.
  • Ditto Fighter: Jacob from CD3 is a Double/Necrid-style where most of his attacks are old versions of other characters', or from characters who aren't in the game.
  • Do Not Call Me "Paul": In the canon side story "Bayou Hero", Zephyr's reaction to the mayor referring to them by their deadname Etienne la Ferme is to shove their staff in his face and coldly remind him their name is Zephyr.
  • Downloadable Content: Each game features some:
  • Early-Bird Cameo: CD3's Hellspawn would later appear as Poppy Jones' heel persona in World of Wrestle.
  • Elemental Powers: The entire point of the game.
  • Elemental Weapon: Almost everyone wields one. In fact, this is stated to be the main function of Charms- use a weapon as a conduit for the elemental magic rather than the user.
  • Epic Flail: Nimbus from CD2 wields one.
  • Everyone Calls Him "Barkeep": "Templar" is a title rather than an actual name, but he himself in unaware of what his name is. Upon finding his mother in his Charms Dealer 2 ending, she calls him "Johann".
  • Fire-Breathing Weapon: Vrillon's weapon, but taken up to eleven by having it shoot star-temperature plasma.
  • Frying Pan of Doom: Chef Dominic.
  • Gratuitous Foreign Language: The non-anglosphere characters have at least one intro or win quote in their native tongue; these include French note , Korean note , Russian note , and Spanish note .
  • Guest Fighter: Charms Dealer 2 features Ladybug, Undyne, and The Baz. DLC would add in Arizona.
    • Ladybug would return for CD3, this time joined by Cuphead and Gordon Freeman. DLC would add Danhausen, Dabi, Filia, and Vriska.
    • CD3 's "Closeout" DLC pack would add two more: Weiss and Maululu from Hot Times On Gladiator Planet, another Fez Games production.
    • Byron from CD3 counts somewhat, being designed by Brandon's brother Matthew.
  • The Gunslinger: Alexa, with literal water guns.
  • Handicapped Badass: Between CD and CD2, Park gets crippled from the waist down. His response is to meld his wheelchair and gaming Mini-Mecha.
  • Heroic Lineage: The Templars. The original came down to save the Pope during the Sack of Rome, and since, the current Templar has sired the next one with a randomly selected nun. Templar and Eva are the current generation.
  • I Know Madden Kombat: Sportyboi's gimmick.
  • I Know Mortal Kombat: Park's fighting style.
  • Incredibly Lame Pun: Everyone in 1 has one pun intro and one pun win quote.
  • Killed Offscreen: Happens to Toxman in his ending in CD2, at the hands of Sister Eva.
    • Apparently, she also did this to Nimbus and Sandwichero between 2 and 3.
  • Last-Name Basis: (Evan) Rooker, (Joan) MacKenzie, and (Peter) Schmidt.
  • Lizard Folk: Vrillon from CD3, being a reptilian alien.
  • Magic Wand: Levatio uses one, befitting his stage magician job.
  • Martial Arts Staff: Zephyr's weapon.
  • Mechanically Unusual Fighter:
    • Levatio, unlike other characters, must "invoke" his charm attacks before using them via a special. Which invocation indicated which attacks can be used.
    • Geiger's Charming Climax, unlike everyone else's, activates a Super Mode instead of a singular attack. Undyne's in 2 would do the same.
    • Marissa must build Charm with a special, rather than over the course of the match. Her Charming Climax also ends in a submission hold that goes until the opponent "taps" or she runs out of Charm.
  • Mesopotamian Monstrosity: Ninnhursag, the final boss of 3 counts, being named for the Sumerian goddess of earth.
  • Mini-Mecha: Park pilots one, stolen from his father's workplace.
  • Musical Assassin: DJ Shiro from CD3.
  • Oddly Named Sequel 2: Electric Boogaloo: Charms Dealer 2: Charms Race, and Charms Dealer 3: Charmageddon.
  • Official Couple: CD3 confirms Charlie/Blondie and Rooker/MacKenzie as couples.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: Geiger, Mark, Levatio, and Toxman.
    • Blondie also counts, although she would start using her alias "Megan" as her name post Charms Dealer. In the post-canon story "Breaking The Ice", we learn her actual first name Esther.
  • Our Angels Are Different: The original Templar is believed to have been an angel, given he seemingly descended from the heavens during The Sack of Rome.
  • Our Ghosts Are Different: Revenant Geiger from CD3.
  • Our Zombies Are Different: Zombie Toxman from CD3 appears to be the standard "reanimated corpse", lacking a method to turn others. He doesn't even want to eat your brains! (Maybe.)
  • Palette Swap: Each character has 6 colors in CD, expanded to 8 in CD2, and later 10 in CD3. All beyond the 2P color are Shout Outs to other characters/properties, usually themed to the character's weapon, charm, or hometown. note
  • Parts Unknown:
    • This is listed as Mark's "hometown", as well as the name of his stage. His age is also listed as "A Perfect Circle". Pumpkin is also from here.
    • Geiger's hometown is given as "The Russian Empire", more as an indication of his age. Some of his quotes in CD3 imply he's from modern-day Kazakhstan.
    • 86 is billed from "Classified", with an age of "Enough". Upon returning as 86.exe in CD3, he's now billed from "The Deep Web", with an age of "Fuck You".
    • For a purely age variant, Blondie's ages are given as "Almost Legal", "Barely Legal", and "Drink!". Given how in "Breaking The Ice", she's 22 a year after Charms Dealer 3, we can infer these mean 17, 19, and 21 respectively.
    • Templar's age is given as "Unknown", but he's also unsure. Charms Dealer 2 says he was born "seven quadrennials ago", meaning 28 years. His age in 3 is given as 30.
  • Production Throwback: Horace, Nick, Park, Levatio, and Sandwichero are all recycled from an aborted previous attempt at a fighting game called "Fighting Mix We".
    • Slick Petey from CD3 comes from this same group, dubbed "Fancy Mike" at the time.
  • Psycho Knife Nut: Blondie, although she's more paranoid.
  • Pun-Based Title: Charms Dealer. As well as the subtitles for the sequels, Charms Race and Charmageddon, respectively.
  • Real Men Wear Pink: In a literal example, several male characters have pink palette swaps. Most of these are references to characters who wear pink themselves such as Garnet for Granite, or Bret Hart for Paul.
  • Secret Character:
    • Charms Dealer: Horace, Nick, Levatio, Park, Vince von Berg, and Geiger.
    • Charms Dealer 2: Horace, Park, MacKenzie, Schmidt, Eli, Ladybug, Undyne, The Baz, Dr. John, and Vince von Berg.
  • Shared Universe: Takes place in the same universe as the other Fez Games franchises Highway Mayhem, Hot Times On Gladiator Planet, World of Wrestle, MILF Quest, and Board City.
    • Vrillon from CD3 is the nephew of both Bertha from Gladiator Planet and Teema from MILF Quest.
    • Butcher Kennington appears as a bonus character for World of Wrestle.
    • DJ Shiro appears as a secret character in Board City.
    • Von Berg Industries billboards can be seen in Highway Mayhem and Board City.
    • On the Zambia track in Highway Mayhem 2, one can find a billboard with Ranger and Nonzukiso on it, warning about poaching.
  • Shark Man: Maululu from CD3, a Guest Fighter from Hot Times On Gladiator Planet.
  • Ship Tease:
    • CD featured flirtatious quotes between Charlie and Blondie. CD2 doubled down on the quotes, and added some flirting between Rooker and MacKenzie.
    • CD3 implied that Ranger and Nonzukiso were attracted to each other which "Serengeti Jam" confirmed.
  • Significant Birth Date: Starting with Charms Dealer 2, character bios now included their birthdays, which revealed this to be a pattern among the cast.
    • Charlie's birthday is February 22, same as Steve Irwin.
    • Blondie's is given as February 29, which ties in to her mysterious backstory. "Breaking The Ice" reveals that her actual birthday isn't far off, being the 27th.
    • Templar's is March 25, the date of the Feast of the Annunciation.
    • Ivan's is May 9, Victory Day in his native Russia.
    • Marissa's is November 12, the date of the first UFC event.
    • Horace's is March 29, the date of WrestleMania III, which took place in Detroit, Horace's hometown.
    • Park's is March 1, which is the date of the founding of Samsung.
    • MacKenzie's is December 8, which she shares with Mary, Queen of Scots.
    • Schmidt's is March 10, date of the coronation of Ludwig II of Bavaria, who was referred to as "The Fairy Tale King" due to his flights of fancy, fitting for someone like Schmidt.
    • Eli's is October 6, date of the start of the Yom Kippur War.
    • Dr. John's is June 14, date of the dedication of the first UNIVAC 1, which was the first general-purpose computer.
    • For a dose of irony, Vince von Berg's birthday is December 24, Christmas Eve.
    • Levatio's is August 20, which is also H. P. Lovecraft's birthday.
    • Toxman's is January 30, the date of the Baia Mare cyanide spill, an ecological distaster.
    • Sister Eva's is April 11, which was Maundy Thursday note  in the year she was born.
  • Sinister Minister: Sister Eva from CD2, to contrast with her brother Templar.
  • Sinister Scimitar: Eli, befitting his Middle Eastern origin.
  • Sinister Scythe: Mark's weapon. Fellow monster Pumpkin uses the sickle-variant.
  • Sinister Switchblade: Nick, in line with his greaser image.
  • Slap-Slap-Kiss: In the side story "Serengeti Jam", Ranger and Nonzukiso have this dynamic. Case in point, after beating the illegal game hunter, the two immediately launch into a makeout session.
  • The Starscream: Vince von Berg to Geiger.
  • Stealth Pun: Schmidt, the user of the Moon Charm, is also portrayed as insane. He's a lunatic.
  • Sword and Gun: Nonzukiso uses a rifle and a machete in a few of her attacks.
  • There Is Another: In Templar's ending in 2, after telling him where his mother is, Padre mutters about telling Templar about his sister. She'd later be added as Sister Eva.
  • Throw Down the Bomblet: Rodney's weapon.
  • Time Skip: Two years take place between Charms Dealer and Charms Dealer 2. Another two years take place between CD2 and CD3.
  • Tom the Dark Lord: The extradimensional beast with a space-slashing scythe... goes by Mark.
    • The other extradimensional beast with the void-creating sickles... is called Pumpkin.
  • Trick Arrow: Schmidt's weapon, although the "trick" is that he's insane.
  • Twofer Token Minority:
    • Zephyr is African-American and identifies as non-binary.
    • Park is Asian, and from 2 onward, is a paraplegic.
    • Nonzukiso is an African (from South Africa) woman.
  • Urban Fantasy: Sure, there's magical artifacts abound, and ancient societies, but everything else is roughly as it is now.
  • Violent Glaswegian: MacKenzie, when off her meds.
  • Waxing Lyrical: Sister Eva quotes "Creeping Death" during her Charming Climax. Fitting, due to it being about the Plagues of Egypt.
Sister Eva: So let it be written, so let it be done!
  • Weapons of Their Trade:
    • Lumberjack Paul uses an axe.
    • Horace the butcher wields meat cleavers.
    • In addition to his frying pan, chef Dominic uses plates, pots, and other utensils in his Special/Charm attacks.
  • Wearing a Flag on Your Head: Paul, Sandwichero, and Eli have alternate colors that are based on their home countries' respective flags (Canada, the Dominican Republic, and Israel). In CD2, Park gets one based on the South Korean flag.
  • Wrestler in All of Us:
    • Horace uses this moveset, being a retired wrestler.
    • Marissa also uses grappling, although hers is closer to jiu-jitsu, but one of her Charm Attacks 'is' a suplex.
