House Stark of Winterfell and Bannermen
Lord Rickard Stark, Warden of the North
Lord of Winterfell and head of House Stark. Was married to Lady Lyarra Stark and father of Brandon, Eddard, Lyanna, and Benjen.- Ambiguously Gay: Some of the comments Rickard makes about his marriage to Lyarra, such as how he was not able to be what she needed and how he had married her out of duty, might suggest something to this effect.
- Arranged Marriage: To his cousin Lyarra Stark.
- Berserk Button: Will not broker disrespect. Ned recalls a time when a lord from the Neck had insulted Lyarra at a feast for Lyanna’s birth and it had taken half the lords present to stop him from beating the man to death. Said lord never showed up at Winterfell again.
- Evil Laugh: Played with; Rickard himself isn't evil, but when he laughs, which is cold and harsh sounding, it isn't a good sign.
- Large and in Charge: Lord Rickard is described as being massive, comparable to the Mountain in height.
- Outliving One's Offspring: His wife had a stillborn daughter named Arya.
- Perfectly Arranged Marriage: Downplayed with Lyarra. Rickard admits to Ned that while he and Lyarra never really loved each other, they were at least friends. On his end, Rickard wouldn't allow any insult towards Lyarra.
Lady Lyarra Stark
Daughter of Rodrik Stark and Arya Flint. Wife and cousin of Rickard Stark and mother of Brandon, Eddard, Lyanna and Benjen.- Missing Mom: For the Stark siblings.
- Posthumous Character: Lyarra has been dead for a few years before the start of the story.
- Silk Hiding Steel: She was the only person who could get Lyanna to do anything.
Brandon Stark
The Wild Wolf
Eldest son and heir of Rickard Stark. Betrothed to Lady Catelyn Tully.- Arranged Marriage: To Catelyn Tully, which he isn't happy about.
- Domestic Abuse: Of the neglectful type with Catelyn. This culminates in running off with Ashara and Lauryn to Essos while Catelyn's pregnant with their child.
- The Friend Nobody Likes: Nobody is happy to see him again, least of all Hoster Tully.
- Hired Guns: Became the head of a group of sellswords to support himself, Ashara and their children.
- I Have No Son!: All but disowned his son with Catelyn in favor of his children with Ashara.
- I Regret Nothing: Holds no qualms about abandoning Catelyn.Elbert: He is your son, Catelyn is your wife. Have you no regret at all for what you have done to them?Brandon: No, not at all if I'm going to be honest with you. I did not want to marry her, I did not want to get a child on her. All that was decided, probably long before either of us was ever born. Why should I be have to be unhappy with a woman I do not want when I can be more than happy with a woman that I actually do want? It all worked out, she's going to be the lady of the Kingdom, and that is all she wants in the end, I assure you.
- Luke, I Am Your Father: Brandon is the father of Ashara Dayne's daughter Lauryn.
- Mr. Fanservice: According to Elia, Brandon got the looks in the family.
- Really Gets Around: Brandon has sex with any serving wench and servant girl who would allow him.
- Spared by the Adaptation: Since he elopes with Ashara, he avoids his canonical fate where he strangles himself to death. He returns to Westeros in time for the Battle of Gulltown.
Eddard Stark
Ned, The Quiet Wolf
Second son of Rickard Stark. Betrothed to Elia Martell.- Arranged Marriage: To Elia Martell. Becomes a Perfectly Arranged Marriage.
- Beware the Quiet Ones: Ned doesn't talk a lot and he isn't as openly quick to anger as either Brandon or Lyanna but he still has a temper, it just mostly manifests in a different way to his siblings.
- Cool Uncle: To the Sand Snakes. He tells them stories of the Long Night and the Kings of Winter.
- Happily Married: To Elia.
- Heartbroken Badass: A platonic version but Ned is still clearly grieving for Robert while leading men down from the North.
- Nice to the Waiter: Goes out of his way to know the Sand Snakes.
- Papa Wolf: Clearly loves his sons Mors and Torrhen. And when he thinks of either of them being burned at the stake, he rejects even the thought of it violently.
- Quit Your Whining: Brandon and Lyanna's complaining about their betrothals makes Ned lose his temper.Brandon: Why are you still defending him, Ned? You're being forced to marry someone who you've never even met aside from seeing her across from halls during feasts.Ned: [knocking over his chair] Yes I am! Lyanna, you have two more years before you are to marry Robert, you aren't even betrothed, you are engaged to be betrothed. Brandon, you have another year before you are to marry Catelyn. I am marrying Elia as soon as she arrives, father has sent over the invitations so could the two of you please stop your whining because I do not want to hear anymore of it!
- Reluctant Ruler: While Ned is not a ruler yet, but Brandon running off with Ashara makes him the heir to Winterfell, something he never wanted to be in the first place as all he wanted was his own little holdfast with Elia and his children.
- Reluctant Warrior: Ned has found himself in command of the Northern forces as his Father has not bestrirred himself from Winterfell, unaware that he has suffered another heart attack, and he marches them south. But the idea of fighting a war has little appeal to him.
Lyanna Stark
The She-Wolf
Third child and only daughter of Rickard Stark.- Arranged Marriage: Betrothed to Robert Baratheon.
- The Bully: Towards Catelyn Tully.
- Female Misogynist: She believes all feminine women are weak.
- Interrupted Suicide: Rhaegar, Gerold, Arthur and Oswell learned not to let Lyanna bathe alone after she tried to drown herself.
- Never Learned to Read: Lyanna can't do math.
- Spoiled Brat: Neither her father nor her brothers know how to say "no" to her.
Benjen Stark
The Wolf Pup
Youngest child of Rickard Stark.- Always Someone Better: Lyanna can beat him in swordplay. Justified as he's only 10 years old.
- The Baby of the Bunch: The youngest of Rickard and Lyarra's children.
- Cheerful Child: Ned notes that Benjen is a sweet and playful lad who loves his older siblings and means no harm to anyone.
- Out of Focus: Isn't talked about as much as the other Stark siblings.
Torrhen Stark
Ned and Elia's elder son and Mors's older twin brother.
- Named After Somebody Famous: After Torrhen Stark, the King who knelt to Aegon the Conqueror.
Mors Stark
Ned and Elia's younger son and Torrhen's younger twin brother.
- Dead Guy Junior: Averted, Elia mentions that it was not her brother she was thinking of when it came to naming Mors. Justified, considering that Mors died before she was born and he had only lived for about a year.
- Named After Somebody Famous: Named after Mors Martell, who married Nymeria when she landed in Dorne.
Jon
Brandon and Catelyn's son.
- Ambiguous Situation: It isn't clear which house he belongs to: House Stark (his father's house), House Tully (his mother's house since Brandon abandoned Jon before he was born), or House Arryn (since Catelyn married Elbert Arryn after Brandon abandoned her.
- The Ghost: Doesn't appear at all.
- Named After Somebody Famous: Named for Jon Arryn.
Roose Bolton
Heir to the Dreadfort.
- Early-Bird Cameo: First appears as a guest at Ned and Elia's wedding.
- Fat and Skinny: The Skinny to Ludd Whitehill's Fat.
- The Friend Nobody Likes: The Boltons aren't especially popular in the North, and Rickard Stark would rather not have them attend Ned's wedding.
Howland Reed
Heir to Greywater Watch.
- Chekhov's Gunman: Makes a short appearance when Ned and Elia travel through Greywater Watch en route to King's Landing before becoming relevant when the Tourney at Harrenhal occurs.
Rickon Umber
Lord of Last Hearth, father to the Greatjon.
- Cool Old Guy
- Large and in Charge: He's on par with Rickard Stark in size, and bear in mind that Rickard is stated to be not much shorter than The Mountain that Rides.
- Named by the Adaptation: The Greatjon's father was not mentioned anywhere in the books, but here he's named Rickon.
- Overshadowed by Awesome: His younger brothers have nicknames like "Crowfood" and "Whoresbane" while his son is called "Mountain Crusher" and(eventually) the Greatjon. Rickon doesn't get a distinctive nickname.
Jon Umber
The Mountain Crusher
Eldest son and heir of Lord Rickon Umber.
- Large Ham
- Red Baron: Earns the nickname "Mountain Crusher" when he kills Gregor "The Mountain" Clegane on the Trident.
- You Killed My Father: When The Mountain killed his father, he went berserk and rearranged his face.
- Young Future Famous People: In case you're wondering, he is the Greatjon; he just hasn't gotten the moniker yet.
Stark Household
Old Nan
An old nursemaid who has served the Starks for decades.- Cool Old Lady: Elia and Ned both seem to think so.
- Intergenerational Friendship: With Elia.
Hodor
A mentally disabled man who serves the Starks as a stable boy.- Demoted to Extra: His appearance in the story amounts to a cameo.
- Only Known by Their Nickname: Hodor isn't his real name, it's Walder.
Bette
A wetnurse in service to house Stark.- Nice Girl: Bette is sweet, considerate and kind. Elia hates herself for resenting her because of that and the fact that she has done nothing wrong.
House Lannister of Casterly Rock
Lord Tywin Lannister, Lord of Casterly Rock and the Westerlands, Warden of the West and Shield of Lannisport
The Lion of Lannister, The Old Lion, The Great Lion of the Rock
Oldest child of Tytos Lannister and his wife Jeyne Marbrand, current Lord of Casterly Rock and Warden of the West. Was married to his cousin Joanna, with whom he had three children, twins Cersei and Jaime and Tyrion. The patriarch of House Lannister, and former Hand of the King.- Big Brother Instinct: Genna mentions that Tywin, along with his other brothers, would do anything for her.
- For Want Of A Nail: By the beginning of the story, he's already resigned his post as Hand of the King.
- The Patriarch: Of House Lannister.
Princess Cersei Lannister
Oldest child of Tywin and Joanna Lannister, older twin sister of Jaime Lannister, and older sister of Tyrion.- Arranged Marriage: To Prince Rhaegar Targaryen.
- Brother–Sister Incest: Continues her incestuous affair with Jaime.
- Child Hater: Cersei really doesn't like Viserys, referring to him as a brat, and thinks about shipping him off to Dorne or the Wall once she has a son by Rhaegar.
- Even Evil Has Standards: Cersei is taken aback by Aerys burning a little boy alive for stealing bread to survive.
- Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Cersei does love Jaime, as well as her Mother whom she misses a great deal and she does love Rhaegar as well.
- Jerkass: Oberyn refers to her as a "vile harpy".
- Mama Bear: For all of Cersei's faults, she does clearly love her daughter Rhaenys.
- No Kill like Overkill: When Cersei found one of her handmaidens stealing a ruby necklace, she had the handmaiden's hands chopped off, her tongue removed and drowned in the Blackwater Bay.
- Spanner in the Works: Drastically complicates things for several Great Houses. For instance, her misguided belief that Elia is trying to get into Rhaegar’s good graces by getting into his bed leads to her ordering Jaime to kill Elia, and to not kill Elia, Jaime crowns her Queen of Love and Beauty, leading to Aerys forcing them both into a betrothal he knows will never be fulfilled because of Elia’s marriage with Ned. Later on, she persuades Jaime to become a Kingsguard after having Harlan Grandison poisoned, preventing the two conspiracies to overthrow King Aerys from being joined.
Ser Jaime Lannister
Eldest son and heir of Lord Tywin Lannister, twin brother of Cersei and older brother of Tyrion.- Big Brother Instinct: Towards Tyrion, case in point their encounter with outlaws in the Westerlands.
- Even the Guys Want Him: Oberyn Martell speculates about seducing him just to see what would happen.
- Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: In-universe, his decision to crown Elia Queen of Love and Beauty is seen by many as a very stupid move.
- Oh, Crap!: His conversation with Oberyn Martell is a long version of this.
- Pretty Boy: Noted by several people to be very handsome, including Oberyn Martell.
- The Resenter: Towards Rhaegar for marrying Cersei.
- Take a Third Option: How Jaime justifies crowning Elia Queen of Love and Beauty. Cersei wanted Jaime to kill or ruin her, which would anger Lewyn Martell and Arthur Dayne and possibly get both Jaime and Cersei killed. So Jaime decided to make Ned jealous by winning the joust and crowning Elia, which would then make Ned want to take Elia away from the capital.
- Would Hit a Girl: In one of the later chapters, King Aerys forces Jaime to burn a lady alive.
Tyrion Lannister
Third child and second son of Lord Tywin Lannister.- Handicapped Badass: He may be a dwarf, but that doesn’t stop him from fighting alongside his brother.
- Odd Friendship: Forms one with Elia Martell when she is a captive at Casterly Rock.
- Out of Focus: Isn’t as talked about as much as his twin siblings, primarily due to being several years younger than they are.
House Lannister of Lannisport
Lady Lilianna Lannister
Heir to Lannisport and handmaiden to Cersei Lannister.- Alliterative Name: Lilianna Lannister.
- Canon Foreigner: Does not appear in either the books or the show.
- Heir Club for Men: Averted, Lilianna has no brothers, either older or younger and this makes her the heir to Lannisport.
- Tongue Trauma: Apparently, after learning of the death of her family Aerys was not pleased with how she expressed her grief, and so had her tongue ripped out.
- Lady-In-Waiting: To Cersei Lannister.
- Stupid Good: Cersei considers her to be this, as Lilianna does not seem to care much about the fact that many of her male relatives in Lannisport argued strongly that she should not be the heir to the city. But, Lilianna does not seem to hold a grudge.
- Sole Survivor: When the Ironborn attack Lannisport, they hang her family from the walls of their home meaning that Lilianna, being away in King's Landing, is the only surving member of the Lannisters of Lannisport.
House Baratheon of Storm’s End
Lord Robert Baratheon, Lord of Storm’s End
Lord of Storm’s End and Lord Paramount of the Stormlands. Eldest son of Steffon Baratheon and Cassana Estermont and older brother of Stannis and Renly.- Action Dad: A noted warrior with a bastard daughter.
- Arranged Marriage: To Lyanna Stark.
- Chivalrous Pervert: Chases off anyone who tries to take liberties during Elia Martell’s bedding ceremony.
- Cruel and Unusual Death: Tortured for several days in the Black Cells, tongue removed, castrated, and then messily executed by decapitation. To add insult to injury for that last one, he wasn't completely decapitated.
- Death by Adaptation: Is killed by Ser Lewyn Martell under the orders of Aerys Targaryen.
- Heterosexual Life-Partners: With Ned Stark.
- Hot-Blooded: Oh yeah. Riding up to the castle of the King and calling for the heir to the throne to come out and die for stealing your fiancee is hardly the result of a cool temper.
- The Lost Lenore: A platonic version with Ned, he often spends a great deal of time thinking about Robert after his execution.
- Red Oni, Blue Oni: The red to Stannis's blue.
- Unwanted Spouse: To Lyanna Stark, who really doesn’t want to marry him (not that she’s enthused about marrying anyone in general).
Stannis Baratheon
Second son of Steffon Baratheon and Robert's younger brother.- Composite Character: With Rickard Stark as a nobleman who is burned alive by the Mad King, sparking a rebellion.
- Death by Adaptation: Executed on the Mad King's orders much earlier than in the books or show.
- Demoted to Extra: He's an integral part of the books, but here, he only appears three times and is executed alongside Robert.
- Face Death with Dignity: He calmly walks up to the pyre, tells the pyromancers to Get It Over With, and defiantly glares at Aerys as he burns to death.
- Kill It with Fire: His fate, courtesy of King Aerys.
- Perpetual Frowner: Even at his age, which is younger than we ever see him in canon, he's described as being serious and grim.
- Red Oni, Blue Oni: The blue to Robert's red.
Renly Baratheon
Third son of Steffon Baratheon and Robert and Stannis's younger brother.- A Child Shall Lead Them: As both of his older brothers are dead, this makes poor little Renly the Lord Paramount of the Stormlands.
- Cheerful Child: The first time Renly is seen he is in the courtyard of Storm's End, laughing and swinging a wooden sword about.
- Ignorance Is Bliss: The Lords of the Stormlands keep Renly unaware that his brothers are dead, partly due to the fact that Aerys wants Renly brought to him to be executed and they are debating what to do in response to the Mad King's order, and thus he assumes everything is normal.
- Troubling Unchildlike Behavior: Renly reacts to the news that his brothers are dead not by bursting into tears, but instead looking at his nursemaid who then nods before he looks down at his feet and when he learns moments later that he is to be king, Ned describes him as having no sorrow in his eyes. Later on when Elia is at Storm's End, Renly does not seem at all distressed and only speaks of his plans as a king to have tourneys every day.
House Targaryen of King's Landing
King Aerys Targaryen, the Second of His Name
The Mad King, Aerys the Mad, King Scab
The current King of Westeros. Married to his sister Rhaella and father of Rhaegar and Viserys.- Abusive Parents: Doesn't look extremely bothered when Rhaegar is injured and threatens to cut out his tongue for speaking out of turn.
- Big Brother Bully: He’s never been nice to his younger sister Rhaella.
- Brother–Sister Incest: Married to his sister Rhaella.
- The Caligula: Any crime is punished by burning alive, tries to force the already-married Elia Martell into a marriage if she does not abort her child, and has no problem threatening or executing his relatives.
- Domestic Abuse: Introduced raping his wife behind a closed door. Even in public, he does not hesitate to strike her. Plus, Aerys' treatment of Rhaella got worse after Viserys' birth because he wanted a daughter.
- Fantastic Racism: Shows nothing but contempt for the Dornish and kicks off the plot when he has Rhaegar and Elia's betrothal annulled.
- Jerkass: On top of his behavior as The Caligula, he’s just plain unpleasant in general.
- Killed Offscreen: By the time the Rebels reach King's Landing, he's been dead for about an hour.
- Kill It with Fire: Typical punishment for any crime under King Aerys is burning alive.
- Kinslaying Is a Special Kind of Evil: Robert and Stannis Baratheon are technically his kin since their grandmother Rhaelle was his aunt. This didn’t stop him from having them both killed.
- Madness Makeover: His appearance, already unsightly with his matted beard and long nails, gets even worse as the story goes on.
- Took a Level in Jerkass: Rhaella mentions that he was never nice, but he became much worse after Viserys was born because he wanted a daughter to fulfill the prophecy of "the dragon must have three heads".
- Would Hurt a Child: An oft-discussed incident is when Aerys had a little boy of five burned alive for stealing bread.
Queen Rhaella Targaryen
Wife of King Aerys II and mother of Rhaegar and Viserys.- Broken Bird: In a conversation she has with Elia she is shown to be very bitter with the state of her life, lamenting the state of her marriage, pointing out her brother had never been a kind man even before she had been forced to wed him and that of all her children, Rhaegar and Viserys were the only ones to survive childhood.
- Brother–Sister Incest: Married to her brother, she isn't happy about that.
- Good Parents: She does her best with Rhaegar and Viserys.
- Heterosexual Life-Partners: With Joanna Lannister and Loreza Martell. And now she’s the only one alive.
- Intergenerational Friendship: She's on good terms with Elia, the daughter of Rhaella's friend Loreza.
- Silk Hiding Steel: Very much so, when Aerys grabes her arm and demands to know why she sent Joanna away from her service she simply meets his eyes and says plainly that she wasn't going to let him turn her friend into his whore.
Prince Rhaegar Targaryen
Eldest child and heir of King Aerys and Queen Rhaella.- Adaptational Villainy: The circumstances of Rhaegar and Lyanna’s disappearance is shrouded in mystery in the books proper, but here, it’s a straightforward kidnapping and rape.
- Ascended Extra: A Posthumous Character in the books, here he has a POV.
- Even Bad Men Love Their Mamas: Rhaegar clearly loves Rhaella a great deal but that does not stop him from kidnapping Lyanna, forcing her into marrying him like his grandparents did to his mother in forcing her to marry her brother and raping her like Aerys does often with his Martial Rape License.
- Hypocrite: Hates his father for raping his mother, but has no problem raping Lyanna.
- Nay-Theist: Rhaegar notes that he has no real belief in the Seven, apart from the Stranger. Zig-Zagged, he may not have much faith in the gods but he does believe in the prophecy Azor Ahai to the point of kidnapping Lyanna and abandoning Cersei and their young daughter.
- Platonic Life-Partners: With Elia Martell. The two were friends while growing up and while the betrothal to them was broken, he still considers her a friend and confidant, enough to entrust her with very sensitive information. This winds up being a deconstruction when Cersei tries to get Elia killed for speaking to Rhaegar in private.
- Sanity Slippage: Undergoes a dramatic one in later chapters, culminating in his kidnapping and rape of Lyanna Stark.
- Spanner in the Works: Sabotaged his own plan to depose his father and make things better for his family and people by crowning Lyanna Stark Queen of Love and Beauty at Harrenhal and subsequently kidnapping her.
- The Bus Came Back: Reappears in chapter eighty-three after being absent for the previous thirteen chapters and no one In-Universe being aware of where he was as he rides back into the Red Keep.
- The Starscream: He is planning to remove his father as he sees him as a destabilizing force.
- Well-Intentioned Extremist: With both of his plans: he seeks to overthrow his father to make things better for his family and the smallfolk, and his abduction and rape of Lyanna is fueled by the prophecies of Azor Ahai and the Prince who was Promised. Rhaegar thinks that his family on a whole is this; they have been obsessed with this prophecy for generations, and speculates that this obsession is the Targaryen madness..
Prince Viserys Targaryen
Second son of King Aerys and Queen Rhaella.- Adaptational Personality Change: Viserys doesn’t really worship his father as much as he did in the books, and is instead terrified of him.
- The Baby of the Bunch: Appears as a small child in this story.
- Excellent Judge of Character: Is terrified of Aerys and distrustful of Cersei.
- Momma's Boy: Viserys loves his mother a very a great deal, and is often described as clinging to her or hiding behind her.
House Tyrell of Highgarden
Lord Mace Tyrell
Lord of Highgarden, Lord Paramount of the Mander, Defender of the Marshes, High Marshal of the Reach and Warden of the South.- I Fight for the Strongest Side!: Olenna mentions that he’s on whatever side Tywin Lannister is on.
Lady Olenna Redwyne
The 'Queen of Thorns', dowager lady of Highgarden.- Cool Old Lady: Is in a room with the Lord Paramount of the North, the Lord Paramount of the Vale and the Lord Paramount of the Riverlands and has no issue telling them what she thinks.
- Deadpan Snarker: With every other breath.
House Tully of Riverrun
Lord Hoster Tully
Lord Paramount of the Riverlands. Was married to Minisa Whent and father of Catelyn, Lysa and Edmure.- Number Two: Makes Jon Arryn promise that he'll be Hand of the King if they win.
- The Proud Elite: Many are quick to point out how proud a man Lord Hoster is and as the Lord Paramount of the Riverlands, it's hard to be more elite than that.
Catelyn Tully
Eldest child of Hoster Tully, older sister of Lysa and Edmure.- Arranged Marriage: Betrothed to Brandon Stark.
- Butt-Monkey: Like her canonical daughter Sansa, Catelyn is put through the wringer. She’s an Unwanted Spouse for Brandon and Lyanna bullies her. Then, Brandon abandons her and their unborn child to elope with Ashara Dayne, and Catelyn has to go back to Riverrun.
- Throw the Dog a Bone: Marries Brandon, and then the heir to the Vale, Elbert Arryn.
- Unwanted Spouse: Brandon really doesn’t want to marry her, and Ned’s peeved at him for it.
Lysa Tully
Second Daughter of Hoster Tully, younger sister of Catelyn and older sister to Edmure.- Ascended Extra: A minor but significant character in the books, here she is a POV.
- Sibling Rivalry: Has one to Catelyn, though for the most part it seems to be fairly one sided.
House Arryn of the Eyrie and Bannermen
Jon Arryn
Lord of the Eyrie, Lord Paramount of the Vale, Warden of the East.- Cool Old Guy: Well, Ned certainly seems to think so.
- Parental Substitute: Was one of these to both Ned and Robert.
- Reasonable Authority Figure: Jon will often play this role.
- So Proud of You: Jon says this to Ned almost verbatim.
Ser Elbert Arryn
Heir to the Vale.- Arranged Marriage: Betrothed to Catelyn after Brandon abandons her and their unborn child.
- Ascended Extra: Becomes a POV character.
- Composite Character: Gets Brandon Stark's role as Catelyn's betrothed who duels Petyr Baelish.
- Parental Substitute: If he makes it through the war, he'll likely become one to Jon, Brandon and Catelyn's son.
- Spared by the Adaptation: Survives a bit longer than his original counterpart due to not being amongst the nobles headed to King's Landing to confront Rhaegar.
House Martell of Sunspear and Bannermen
Doran Nymeros Martell, Prince of Dorne
Older brother of Elia and Oberyn and ruling Prince of Dorne.- Ascended Extra: Becomes a POV character.
- The Chessmaster: Much of what goes on between Brandon Stark and Ashara Dayne is a plot by him to get Rickard Stark to name Ned his heir.
- Freudian Trio: The cerebral chessmaster of the Martell siblings (superego).
- Inadequate Inheritor: Feels like this to his mother, the former Princess of Dorne.
Princess Elia Nymeros Martell
Sister of Doran and Oberyn. Formally betrothed to Prince Rhaegar Targaryen before the Mad King broke it off and she was betrothed to Ned Stark.- Arranged Marriage: To Ned Stark after King Aerys broke off the betrothal between Rhaegar and Elia.
- Ascended Extra: A Posthumous Character in the books, here she is a POV and one of the focal characters in the story.
- Bear Hug: Elia may be fragile, but her hugs are not.
- Beware the Nice Ones: Sweet and kind to almost everyone she meets she still has Oberyn kill Renly in order to clear the path for Ned to take the throne.
- Big Sister Mentor: She has to teach Lyanna how to do math.
- Foolish Sibling, Responsible Sibling: The responsible to Oberyn's foolish.
- Freudian Trio: Balances out Doran (The Chessmaster) and Oberyn (Hot-Blooded) (ego).
- Hidden Depths: Aside from her fighting skills, she proves to be a capable administrator of Winterfell when Lord Rickard falls ill and is able to go toe to toe with Tywin Lannister when she is held captive at Casterly Rock, being able to convince him to let her go. YMMV on the fact that Tywin was probably wanting to get rid of her anyway but at the same time he did concede to let Jaime go with her as a guarantee of her safe return to the North.
- Happily Married: Very much so to Ned.
- Intergenerational Friendship: With Old Nan.
- Jock Dad, Nerd Son: A female example. She only briefly took up a sword on her mother's insistence and so Oberyn would have a sparring partner, but had little enthusiasm and soon abandoned it.
- Spiteful Spit: Spits at Brandon after he laughs at her for slapping him.
- Silk Hiding Steel: She was taught to wield a sword by her mother.
- Stone Wall: Elia’s fighting technique consists of blocking all of Lyanna’s attacks before making a single disarming move.
- Team Mom: Serves this role to the young ladies at Winterfell, as she handles disputes and temporarily acts as lady while Lord Rickard is ill.
- Unknown Rival: She certainly didn’t intend on starting off a feud with Cersei Lannister just by being in King’s Landing.
- Would Hurt a Child: She has Oberyn kill Renly.
Prince Oberyn Nymeros Martell
Younger brother of Doran and Elia.- Affectionate Nickname: Elia calls him "Obie".
- Ascended Extra: Goes from a character who didn’t appear very long (though he made quite an impact) to a POV character.
- Brutal Honesty: Admits that the social graces have never really appealed to him and prefers to have someone mean what they say.
- Drowning My Sorrows: When his father died, Oberyn spent three days in the Shadow City, drunk out of his mind and in a prostitute's bed.
- Establishing Character Moment: Offscreen. The first thing we hear about him is that he's just been dragged back to Sunspear after trying to raise Dorne in rebellion for breaking Elia's betrothal to Rhaegar.
- Freudian Trio: The most martially gifted and Hot-Blooded (id) of the Martell siblings.
- Hot-Blooded: Tried to raise Dorne in rebellion and threatened the maester when Elia’s betrothal to Ned was announced. And that’s just the first of many examples.
- Would Hurt a Child: Oberyn kill Renly on Elia's order.
Princess Loreza Martell
The former Princess of Dorne, mother of Doran, Elia and Oberyn.- The Ace: All three of her children remember her as kindhearted, a good fighter, and effective planner.
- Heterosexual Life-Partners: With Queen Rhaella Targaryen and Joanna Lannister.
- Lady-In-Waiting: Was this to Queen Rhaella Targaryen, along with Joanna Lannister when they were all younger.
- Named by the Adaptation: Her name was not mentioned in the novels.
- Posthumous Character: She’s been dead for about two years.
Ashara Dayne
Sister of Arthur Dayne of the Kingsguard and Lady-in-waiting to Elia Martell. Has a bastard daughter named Lauryn.- Ascended Extra: Goes from a Posthumous Character to a POV character.
- Berserk Button: Bringing up her one-night stand that resulted in Lauryn.
- Elopement: With Brandon Stark, taking their daughter Lauryn with them.
- Heterosexual Life-Partners: With Elia Martell.
- Lady-In-Waiting: To Elia Martell, also was breifly in attendence to Queen Rhaella.
Lauryn Sand
Bastard daughter of Ashara Dayne. Accompanies her mother to Winterfell.- Canon Foreigner: Does not appear in either the books or the show.
- Spared by the Adaptation: Could be seen this way, if Barristan's story about Ashara having a stillborn daughter is true.
The Sand Snakes
The bastard daughters of Oberyn Martell.Obara Sand
Oldest daughter of Oberyn Martell, born from a whore in Oldtown.
- Blood Knight: Obara clearly takes a great deal of enjoyment in fighting and shedding blood.
- Child Soldier: Participates in raids on castles in the Reach.
- Eye Scream: Seems to enjoy inflicting this on her enemies, using her whip to take her enemies eyes out and uses her knife to go for the eye.
- Fan Boy: Takes a liking to the story of Brandon the Burner.
- Multi-Melee Master: Carries a whip into battle which she wields in tandem with her spear and shield.
- Shield Bash: Carries a round shield, and uses it as a weapon as much as any of the others. It has a bronze spike in the centre of it which makes it that much more dangerous.
- Sweet Polly Oliver: Obara is present at the war council at the ruins of Summerhall but she is dressed in men's clothes and Oberyn introduces her as his son.
- Tomboy and Girly Girl: The tomboy to Nymeria and Tyene. She prefers fighting to sewing.

Lord Quellon Greyjoy
Lord of the Iron Islands, Lord Reaper of Pyke.- Brutal Honesty: He prefers people cut to the chase over needless flattery, cutting off Elia's greeting before it could get too flowery.
- I Fight for the Strongest Side!: Inverted; Elia convinces him to join the Rebellion by pointing out how the loyalists already have the Royal Fleet, the Redwyne Fleet and the Lannister navy and so have little need for his longships. By contrast, the rebels would deem him invaluable for his ships and would thus grant him bigger rewards.
