Indomitable Rampart "Steel Guardian"
"Whatever evil you're plotting, you're never gonna pull it off! I'll protect everyone with my shield if it's the last thing I do!"

PROFILE:
Height: 186 cm (6'1'')
Weight: 70 kg (154 lbs)
Blood type: O
Date of Birth: September 1st
Weapon: Bulwark
EXS ability: Fortress
Known alias: The Steel Guardian

A second-year high school student, a friend of Hyde, and the vice-president and second-in-command of the Exist Force Guardians (EFG), an In-Birth vigilante group made up entirely of school students to help those who have recently awakened to their abilities to help them acclimate, as well as making sure they don't act out of line during the Night. Tsurugi is a positive and cheery young man, if a bit reckless and headstrong, who dedicates himself as a member of the EFG to personally scouting out and inviting new In-Births into the group, swearing to protect as manty people as he possibly can.

While the EFG's original philosophy was to protect as many fellow students as possible, Kuon's beckoning of the Final Night has Tsurugi determined to protect everyone from further harm and ventures out alone to stop Kuon and his plans of ruination.

Tsurugi possesses the EXS of Fortification note : Fortress and his weapon of choice is Bulwark, an enormous shield that he can manifest alongside a limited amount of armor that also manifests on his left arm.

On the gameplay side of things, Tsurugi is a rushdown character bar none, sporting an incredibly aggressive moveset designed to get him up in his opponent's face as soon as possible and not once letting up on the offense with a mixture of large, powerful normals. To add to this, Tsurugi has the unique mechanic of all of his Increase attacks having guard points, which are brief windows during an attack where Tsurugi is fully armored, allowing him to tank an opponent's attempt at retaliation if they dare to get the drop on him.

His Force Function, Skid-Scare Loader, has Tsurugi enter a stance where he holds Bulwark up in front of him that will armor through any attack that isn't a low or a grab. From there, Tsurugi can dash forward or backward (the latter of which will cancel the stance), or follow-up into one of three special moves: Breaker - an advancing shield-bash, Cromlech Setter - a leaping skateboard trick-esque move that can catch aerial opponents, and Land Grader - a shield-surfing slide that hits low.

Tsurugi's Infinite Worth, Earth-Breaking Excavator, has him punching the ground with his shield hard enough to launch the opponent skywards and also splinter the ground beneath them. As Bulwark vanishes, Tsurugi leans back and rears his left arm to prepare for a powerful strike. He then re-summons Bulwark and lunges forward to shield bash his descending opponent.

  • Affectionate Nickname: Tsurugi calls Hyde "Kido-cchi" in the scrapped Chronicle scenario featuring him and Sakaki and it's not out the world for him to have been the one to start calling Komatsu as "Koma-chan".
  • All-Loving Hero: Tsurugi manifested a shield as his signature weapon as well as his single armored-gauntlet out of a desire to protect everyone.
  • Alternate Company Equivalent: Going with the theme of UNI taking several cues from Melty Blood/Tsukihime, Tsurugi is very clearly based on Arihiko Inui, being the Hot-Blooded, orange haired best friend of the main protagonist. Where they differ, however, is while Arihiko is Shiki's Muggle Best Friend, Tsurugi is already an experienced In-Birth who has been partaking in the Hollow Night for multiple months longer than Hyde has. Tsurugi is also not characterized as a womanizer or a delinquent.
  • Ascended Extra: He was an NPC in the Chronicle Mode and Promoted to Playable in [Sys:Celes].
  • Benevolent Boss: Tsurugi isn't the proper leader of the EFG, he mainly does most of the work involving new recruits and acts friendly towards all of them. He's done enough recruiting to have an informal protocol for bringing students from outside the school to the Student Council Room. While the real leader is the yet unseen Student Council President of the school named Sakaki, the Student Council Room is utilized as the EFG's Headquarters.
  • Character Catchphrase: Is quite fond of loudly exclaiming "YOSSHA!"note
  • Dishing Out Dirt: Downplayed. While it's not his main ability, Tsurugi has a heavy association with earth and stone. A few of his moves have names that invoke the earth (Earth-Breaking Excavator, High-Pressure Geo-Crusher, Cromlechs, etc.), his Infinite Worth has him punching the ground so hard that large stalagmites are left jutting out of the ground, and the Logo Joke in his gameplay reveal trailer involve both the Arc System Works and French Bread logos bursting through a stone wall.
    • Tsurugi's movelist reflects terminology associated with construction and demolition. With words such as skid-loaders, smart pilers, motor graders, land graders, trebuchets, etc. Then you have your regular "Jaw Crusher" and "Bloomer" among his move names.
  • Fashionable Asymmetry: Tsurugi's left arm is fully armored from shoulder to finger specifically to hold his shield while his right arm is unadorned save for his EFG armband.
  • Fiery Redhead: It's more orange than red, but it suits his hot-blooded attitude.
  • Great Offscreen War: Not so catastrophic as a war but Hilda mentions during Hyde's Chronicle Mode episode that Amnesia had recently won a skirmish against a student-group she misremembers as the "DEF", when she most likely meant EFG, and initially thought Hyde was one of their members out to avenge their defeat. Tsurugi was no doubt among the people present for that event, though him being playable in [Sys:Celes] shows that he came out of it relatively fine if he was there.
  • Ground Pound: Tsurugi frequently involves this in his attacks be it his shield slam, the aerial shield drop, or his Infinite Worth, the latter which produces rock spires for how hard he hits the ground to launch his opponent.
  • Heroic Build: Probably the most blatant example in the series. Tsurugi is tall, muscular, and fights for the sole purpose of protecting others without any other underlying selfish motivations. He is the third tallest human character behind Enkidu and Gordeau and this kid is still a highschooler.
  • Horrible Judge of Character: He, and by extension his boss, most likely thought that Phonon could have had her desire to freely use her powers be contained and use her powers to protect the innocent. Tsurugi still most likely predicted she would go off on her own. They still believed that she would be inclined to do good, instead of going around reveling in her new powers.
    • Cut content reveals that Tsurugi figured Phonon would leave eventually but doesn't blame her for wanting to explore her powers on her own, only delivering a message from the EFG President that she'll be welcomed back anytime.
    • Said cut content also has Tsurugi describing Hyde as being "dull around girls". If only Tsurugi knew how much female attention Hyde gets.
  • Hot-Blooded: Tsurugi is upbeat, lively, and constantly gives off an air of charisma that alludes to his position. He also has the most easily excited expression among the new character portraits, and among the entire playable cast for that matter.
    • Goes "YAHOO" when he does an aerial skateboard trick on his shield.
    • All his move names have an exclamation point at the end. His IW with 2, his IWEXS with 3.
  • Ironic Name: Tsurugi's name literally translates to "blade" in Japanese, the irony being that his weapon is a shield.
  • Leitmotif: Keep on Shining! He also surprisingly has one in Chronicle Mode, aptly titled Tsurugi.
  • Luckily, My Shield Will Protect Me: His in particular is enormous, dwarfing him in both width and height. Unlike his predecessors Riesbyfe and Mash, Tsurugi actually uses his shield to block incoming attacks with a number of his increased heavy buttons as well as his Force Function.
  • Mighty Glacier: Tsurugi is a tank with his shield and powers, though he is one of the slower In-Births as a result.
  • Nonindicative Name: His name means "sword" in Japanese, despite fighting with a magical shield.
  • Number Two: Tsurugi is the vice-leader of the EFG and also considered its most standout member as a combatant.
  • Rank Scales with Asskicking: Tsurugi has been said to be one hell of a fighter, but actually focuses more on defense than offense due to his weapon, and even Phonon could tell that there would be no way of her ever beating him in a fight.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Acts as the red to his assistant Komatsu's blue.
  • Remember the New Guy?: Tsurugi is said to be good friends with Hyde, which credits him so far as Hyde's only male acquaintance, much less friend, at school.
  • Ridiculously Average Guy: In a series full of rather striking designs, Tsurugi stands out just for how plain he looks. Shield and plated arm aside, the only things that make him stand out are his orange, spikey hair and the armband. Aside from that, he's got a fairly basic tall build, a white shirt, a red tie, the same pants as Hyde, and a pair of sneakers. Though he more than makes up for it with his personality alone.
  • Shield Bash: A given considering his weapon. Tsurugi swings, slams, and even rides his shield in combat. His free hand is there to grab people and he does use some kicks in his moveset.
  • Shield Surf: One of his follow-ups has him riding on Bulwark as if it were a surfboard. This goes one step further where he's doing aerial tricks with it like a skateboard.
    • And his third piece of official artwork is him surfing at the beach with Komatsu and Phonon.
  • Smarter Than You Look: Despite being described as looking like your average musclehead, Tsurugi has shown to be quite skilled at deducing and getting information from others. He was able to see through Phonon's admittedly poor attempt to hide the fact that she was caught up in any incidents, but Tsurugi's investigation on her made him see through her act. He was also spot on in guessing Phonon's true facade whenever the topic of In-Births and weapons came up. Despite this, Tsurugi still forgets what the EFG actually means when it is not abbreviated.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: With Hyde. Hyde describes his "rotten luck" that keeps him bound to Tsurugi while the latter snarkily describes their bond as being tied by the "red string of fate."

    Kaguya

Kaguya Jingū

Voiced by: Mami Ozaki

She watches.
She watches her target as the bullet penetrates it.
Her killing instinct pierces the night like a shooting star.
Her fingertip is the very reaper that disperses life to the winds.
Her mind is etched with disturbing memories of childhood.
The time for farewells shall eventually come.

Moonlight Dancer "Twin Barrel Beauty"
"Leave everything to me. I'll clean this up without a hitch~."

PROFILE:
Height: 172 cm (5'8")
Weight: 58 kg (128 lbs)
Blood type: O
Date of Birth: October 10th
Weapon: Garibaldi
EXS ability: Banisher
Known aliases: Twin Barrel Beauty, Executor no. 6

A Sixth Rank Executor and a member of Orie's team. While her three close friends were from orphanages, Kaguya herself hails from a well-renowned family. She along with Lex were sent ahead of Orie and Mika to Japan to investigate the city of Kanzakai and its recent increase of In-Birth activity. Though originally sent to be stationed in a different location somewhere else in Japan, Kaguya is recalled to Kanzakai with the order of stopping Kuon's plans from coming to fruition. While doing so, Kaguya's childhood trauma resurfaces, and she must be forced to confront it alongside her target.

Kaguya's EXS Ability is the EXS of Exorcism: Banisher and she wields a pair of ornate pistols called Garibaldi.

Despite having an arsenal more fitted to fighting at a long range, Kaguya is instead a mid-range character who excels at using her unique movement options and confusing specials to mix up and get the drop on her opponent. However, it doesn't mean she can't zone her opponent out, and a well-timed shot can potentially spell doom for them if they're not careful.

Kaguya's Force Function, Dance Without Rest: Flower of Overflowing Light, allows her to quickly sidestep, gaining invulnerability in the process, before counterattacking with two possible follow-up attacks.

Kaguuya's Infinite Worth, Dance Elegantly in the Light: Moonlit Palette has her assault her opponent with a series of kicks before shooting three beams of light from her pistols, with the third shot setting off an explosion.

  • All-Loving Heroine: Is motivated to protect her friends and loved ones.
    • Her emphasis on wanting to protect her daily life gains further meaning when considering her past.
  • Alternate Company Equivalent: As a Gun Kata fighter who belongs to a Church Militant organization consisting entirely of women, as well as having her eyes closed 24/7 and predominantly wearing blue and white, she very clearly takes some cues from Akatsuki Blitzkampf's Anonym. Something that Akatsuki himself lampshades in a win quote when fighting her.
Akatsuki: Dual-pistol combat? I've heard of that fighting style before.
  • Amazon Brigade: She acts as the long-range support in Orie's Executor Squad.
  • Blue Is Heroic: Being part of Orie's squad has her wearing similarly colored uniform with a large portion of her dress being blue. She fights for her friends as well as the noble goals of Licht Kreis.
  • Combat Stilettos: Her heels seem nowhere near as tall as Orie's though.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Compared to The Ojou she is now, Kaguya was a very different person in her youth. Back when she was nothing more than a rowdy child, she was forced to kill her own father in self-defence after what's implied to have been him turning into a Void; something she still carries a deep trauma over to this day.
  • Defeat Means Friendship: Was forced to join Licht Kreis after being defeated by Silvaria 10 years prior to the game's start. She has come to appreciate her new life although she isn't a 100% satisfied from being humiliated by Silvaria.
  • Eyes Always Shut: Even more so than Enkidu, Kaguya's eyes are always seen shut, giving her an air of refined, composed elegance and also alludes to her nature as a gadfly. Makes one wonder how she can even aim her guns with both eyes closed.
  • Expy: Seems to be inspired heavily from the dual-gun archetypes that have come before her. Noticeably utilizing gunkata and using the muzzle flashes as physical attacks like Noel Vermillion. Her special that has her bullets bounce on the screen is very reminiscent of Anonyms and Petra. Also has shades of Tatsuya.
  • Fairytale Wedding Dress: Her concept design shows that she wears a dress similar to Orie's but much more ornate and slightly more Stripperific with how it shows off some cleavage. She also seems to wear a bridal-veil in and out of her combat uniform.
    • So far the noticeable updates to her playable design compared to her concept design seems to be the lack of said veil and her dress being primarily more blue than white.
  • Guns Akimbo: Her primary weapons are the Garibaldis a pair of large, antique-looking pistols.
  • Gun Kata: While Kaguya has access to two projectiles, a lot of her normals involve using her gun blasts to attack the enemy which is incredibly reminiscent of Noel Vermillion.
  • The Gunslinger: Type C with her acrobatic movements and close-combat prowess.
  • Himecut: She has blunt bangs along with her long hair.
  • Kick Chick: If she's not blasting her guns, she's kicking you.
  • Leap and Fire: Her aerial attacks as well as her command jump which shoots out two bouncing bullets involve a lot of air-time. Her lunging attack also has her firing both her gains as she leaps a short distance forward before doing a follow-up attack.
  • Leitmotif: Tearing Bullet.
  • Long Hair Is Feminine: Has long, straight black-hair.
  • Moveset Clone: Subverted. Presumably having gone through the same type of training, Kaguya shares a lot of similarities with Orie between using a lot of kicks for their normals + throw animation, aerial leaps, and a backdash that have them performing a backflip.
    • Both of them even shout Chain Shift and Veil Off when they activate it.
  • Ms. Fanservice: Has long hair with blunt bangs; an outfit that exposes her cleavage, armpits, and back; and garterbelts that are easily visible in between all of her leaping attacks and kicks, Kaguya is easily the most fanservice oriented design the franchise has seen.
  • Murder in the Family: Killed her father with the Garibaldi's she manifested at a young age for currently unknown reasons. From what can be observed from Silvaria, it doesn't seem like Kaguya was completely at fault for the incident.
  • The Ojou: Unlike her friends who all share similar upbringings as orphans, Kaguya is said to be a from a renowned family. The veracity of this statement is questionable as Kaguya could still technically be from a well-off family before its fall from grace so she's not technically lying but her life has definitely taken quite a turn from what it once was.
  • Sexy Backless Outfit: The upper portion of her back is exposed.
  • Shipper on Deck: Has traces of this as she seems to be aware of Hyde and Orie's relationship based on her interaction with the former. Upon her victory, Kaguya states that she held back a bit in thanks for Hyde always taking care of Orie. Hyde also seems to know that Kaguya is Orie's close friend as well and is hesitant to fight her.
  • Supreme Chef: Is credited to being the primary cook among the girls. She baked the cake that is seen in one of Orie's Birthday Illustrations.
    • Orie states that Kaguya is a great cook "despite how she looks" which may hint at her personality outside of being a refined lady.
  • Technical Pacifist: Subverted and averted. Kaguya mimics Orie's win-line from the previous game at how her bullets only punish the wicked like how Orie's Ruler is non-lethal to those who are pure of heart. Kaguya however states that her bullets will hurt anyone.
  • Too Many Belts: Has two sizeable belts that are not fastened across her waist.
  • Troll: She frequently messes around with Mika and tells her misleading information regarding topics such as how to conduct oneself and the utter importance of breast size.
    • Orie mentions that Kaguya is notably better than she is at being able to trick others when they're sent to foreign countries and have to lie to keep their cover up.
    • Also finds Hyde's reactions to being teased about his relationship with Orie to be cute and amusing.
  • The Unseen: She was first seen as a silhouette alongside her companions where Orie was the only one visible in the Arcade Opening of the first iteration of the game. Later, she shows up in the ending slide picture for Orie's Arcade Mode along with the other girls and she is even directly mentioned in Orie's voiced birthday message. Even in Chronicle Mode where a bunch of new characters were given models, Kaguya is nowhere to be seen, despite being mentioned by Lex, Mika, and Orie. She finally makes her full debut with her addition as a playable character in [Sys:Celes].

Endless Entity "Eternal Re-Birth"

"Meld. Become one... Venture forth into the Hollow Night. Dive into oblivion... Into the Abyss..."

PROFILE:
Height: 159 cm (5'3'')
Weight: 47 kg (104 lbs)
Blood type: AB
Date of Birth: May 13th
Weapon: Insulator: Imitate
EXS ability: Aeon
Known aliases: Kuon the Eternal, Aeon, The Weaver of Eternity

A mysterious, seemingly young boy, clad in a white cloak, and Linne's older brother. Kuon, thanks to his natural aptitude for the blade, was the de-facto leader of the original group of villagers that made up the Night Blade when he led them into battle against the invading armies of Licht Kreis led by Waldstein. When in-fighting between the reformists and moderate factions began after the war, the village elder decided to hide the secret techniques of EXS and seal them within two of the villagers. Kuon volunteered himself and his sister to be the ones to bear this burden and had the Secret Art of Eternity engraved onto his very body. Kuon soon left the village after this event as he thought that staying would only cause more trouble to an already splintering faction. His last act was leaving his sister under the protection of Waldstein, who had turned from Licht Kreis after Kuon had saved him from transforming into a Void. He has traveled alone for the past five hundred years and has recently resurfaced to carry out his plans; plans that involve his sister, Hyde, Seth, and Hilda.

[Sys:Celes] shines a bit more light on Kuon's backstory and what exactly his plans are. It's revealed that the immense power he wielded ended up corrupting him, leading to him being taken over by the "other half" present in nearly all In-Births when they accumulate enough EXS, and appears to be fully aware of it too. Now, Kuon plans to use his Art of Eternity and Linne's Art of Reincarnation to traverse through the Abyss and cross over into the world of the Void - an act that will effectively completely destroy the world in the process - in order to reach an unknown individual who once crossed over before.

Kuon was granted an abnormal amount of EXS from the Hollow God, which manifests as the EXS of the Abyss: Aeon. He formerly dual wielded a traditional set of katanas in combat although it is not known what sort of abilities he can utilize now aside from his immortality. He was the original wielder of the Insulator, which he used to cut off the overflow of EXS that was turning Waldstein into a Void. His status as the Insulator's original wielder is reflected in his current weapons: A set of Insulator replicas collectively known as Insulator: Imitate.

Kuon is an incredibly tricky character who can easily catch an opponent of guard from pretty much anywhere on the screen thanks to his powerful zoning tools and unique movement options, making him a true master of playing at mid-screen.

A good majority of Kuon's unique movement comes from his Force Function, Heavenly Law, a stance which, upon activation, gives Kuon access to around four seconds of flight, allowing him to move to pretty much anywhere on the screen. While flying, Kuon can cancel the flight stance into a significantly buffed version of his regular specials and air normals, allowing him to deal devastating amounts of damage if the cards are in his favor.

Kuon's Infinite Worth, The Silent Orchard of the Abyss, acts as a fullscreen strike which, if it hits, has Kuon bind the opponent in place before assaulting them with powerful bursts of EXS, resulting in a large explosion that launches them.

  • Affably Evil: Despite being a genuine villain whose plans involve The End of the World as We Know It, Kuon is anything but evil, being genuinely kind and respectful to pretty much everyone in the cast, albeit in his own distant, aloof way, with the more malicious characters getting nothing more than some light snarking thrown their way. Several key examples include:
    • Thanking Vatista for helping him save Waldstein's life when they reunite after more than five-hundred years.
    • Warning Hilda not to go through with her plans of becoming a Re-Birth (though he does admit that it's mainly because she's important to his plans).
    • Showing completely sincere gratitude to Chaos for helping him whilst he was still regaining his power and helping him unlock the power needed to continue studying the history of the Hollow Night in his ending.
    • Honoring Gordeau's request to pass along his message to Roger urging him to come back, and then going the extra mile to use the last of his power to bring him back from the dead.
  • The Ageless: Looks and sounds almost as young as Linne does. The sequel reveals that he was able to age up to his current appearance, now appearing as a young adult man rather than a teenager. It is not currently explained what caused him to regress in physical age.
  • Aloof Big Brother: He's the oldest of the two Siblings of Eternity. While the two's relationship is not greatly explored, Linne does reminisce the times when Kuon made toys for her and the other village kids to play with.
  • And I Must Scream: According to [Sys:Celes], Kuon has reached a point where the "other self" that's inserted into all In-Births when they are bitten by Voids has completely taken over his body, and he's aware of every second of it. His ultimate goal is to find a way to undo this, and he doesn't seem to really care whether or not he or the world around him ends up dying in the process, so long as his current existence of suffering is ended.
  • Anti-Villain: Somewhere between Type 1 and Type 2. He's a legitimately friendly and honorable person who is only doing what he does out of a mixture of poor circumstances and misguided intentions.
  • Ambiguous Ending: Kuon's fate is ultimately unknown. He is defeated and/or sometimes killed in a majority of the endings while in some particular examples he seems to survive.
    • Waldstein's ending has Wald himself take upon his Immortal Seal and falling into the Abyss to his death. Wald bids Kuon, now free of his immortality, to go visit Linne with his new lease on life.
    • Gordeau's ending has Kuon cross over into the Abyss without initiating the Immortalize. As Kuon lay defeated, he makes one last request to do so for even the slightest chance at crossing over into the world of the Voids to hunt down his true enemy.
    • Kuon's own ending has him complete the Immortalize and cross over to the world of Voids to hunt down Higan.
  • Asskicking Leads to Leadership: He is the former leader of the Night Blade and was made so because of his natural aptitude for swordsmanship, being able to go toe-to-toe with the likes of Waldstein and come out on top.
  • Benevolent Boss: Kuon fully knew that his two allies during the Final Night would eventually challenge him at some point before the night's end yet he still accepted Waldstein and Enkidu's assistance.
  • Big Bad: Of the series up until [Sys:Celes]. However, his plans hint at there potentially being an even greater threat than him.
  • Body Horror: That black covering on his body? Those are scars left over from the transformation into a Void. Word of God has stated that around eighty percent of Kuon's body has mutated into that of a Void.
    • Now a full view of his body showcases his transformation. Both his legs and a single arm are that of a Void's, bearing heavy resemblance to Merkava except with red colored Curse Commandments.
  • Book Ends: From a musical standpoint, his theme is a darker, more foreboding and tragic version of the very first piece of music Raito ever composed for the series, featured in the very first trailer of the game, bringing things full circle for what is touted as the Grand Finale of the franchise.
  • The Chessmaster: If Linne's observations are right about the night Hyde was bitten, it seems as though Kuon planned for Hyde to be bitten all along, creating patches of EXS in a way that eluded Linne's notice that would draw Hyde into the Night as she spent the past two days cleaning up the area.
    • Extends to the entire story within the modern day. Kuon was most likely responsible for worsening the outpour of EXS in Kanzakai 6 months prior to the beginning of Chronicle Mode and causing the initial burst of In-Births from the likes of Gordeau, Carmine, and Hilda. Multiple characters have identified that something or someone was behind the frequent Hollow Nights between Merkava, Yuzuriha, Linne, Waldstein, Seth, and Vatista.
    • Speaking of Seth, Kuon is revealed to be the one who made contact with Chaos for him to deliver the Eliminators to him. This must have been an important element to Kuon's plans as the possibility of Seth simply running with the Eliminators in hand and not forming a contract with Chaos was perfectly fine in Kuon's eyes.
  • Cloning Gambit: Linne mentions that if Hyde saw was true about Kuon appearing in the body of a child then he was only maintaining that body as an extension of himself and that he cannot manifest his true body yet for whatever reason.
    • His older form in [Sys:Celes] reveals that Kuon was truly physically as young as he appeared in Chronicle Mode and he had to regain his powers to age as he appears in "[Sys:Celes]".
  • The Coats Are Off: To a degree. While he doesn't take it off entirely, Kuon's intro animation shows him unfastening his robes as he powers up, giving us a good view of his Void-corrupted body underneath.
  • Creepy Child: His talk with Hyde certainly rubs the latter the wrong way. Slightly subverted in that he isn't as young as he looks.
  • Dark Reprise: His theme, "Rebirth, Immortal Advent", is a slower, heavier remix of the unnamed song that played in the reveal trailer of the first game over a decade ago.
  • Death Seeker: Despite having no qualms about proceeding with his world-ending plan, Kuon also wants nothing more than for someone to put a stop to him and hopefully kill him in the process.
Use your desire to end my existence.
  • Dual Wielding: Vatista's recollection of the Licht Kreis war has her visualizing Kuon taking on Waldstein wielding two katanas, which he promptly ditches once Vatista herself gave him an even better sword.
  • Evil Vs Oblivion: The crux of Kuon's plan, if successful involves plunging the world into an eternal night to open the path to the Abyss so that he can kill an individual called Higan, whom if not killed off completely, can destroy the world entirely.
  • Expy
    • A nigh-immortal being with untold and potentially limitless amounts of power who wears a large robe to conceal most of his youthful body, shares a personal connection to one of the main protagonists of the series, and also acts as The Chessmaster and serves as the Big Bad of a fighting game series. He's basically the light novel equivalent of Asuka R. Kreutz. The sequel makes this much more apparent as he has allowed himself to age forward just like Asuka has in -STRIVE-. The whole body double thing also somehow lined up this coincidence as well. His Death Seeker motivations and desire for atonement from his past mistakes also eerily parallel Asuka's storyline in -STRIVE-, where he's okay with Sol killing him if it would make him happy and redeem Asuka in the end.
    • His heavy association with death as well as his enigmatic goals which involve the world as we know it being destroyed and reshaped into something much more eldritch in nature, in conjunction with his gameplay, also make him one to Izanami and Jedah Dohma.
  • Face–Heel Turn: Over the course of at least five hundred years, Kuon went from an honorable young boy who would help a foe without hesitation to a cold, scheming being who is intent on pursuing his goals even if it means damning the rest of the world.
  • Fallen Hero: Kuon willingly gave up both his own and his sister Linne's chances at a normal life so that the various factions of his clan would stop quarreling with each other. That was centuries ago. In the present day, Kuon is now coldly manipulating those same factions towards his own enigmatic goals. Regardless of what those goals may be, the way he's going about them has turned him into an antagonist to much of the cast. Kuon's announcement of the Final Night has all eyes drawn towards stopping him.
  • Final Boss: Replaces Hilda as this in UNI2. The only characters who don't fight him in the final stage are Akatsuki (who fights Eltnum), Nanase, and Kuon himself (who both fight Hyde).
  • Foil: Kuon is what happens when the All-Loving Hero makes a major, selfless sacrifice in an attempt to quell a dire situation without thinking of the ramifications or consequences of their actions, both to themselves and especially their loved ones. In other words, he's what Hyde would be if he didn't have a more grounded, realistic sense of self-preservation. He's also one to Seth, as while like Seth he's lost his original idealism and become very cynical and jaded towards the reality of his situation and wants to atone for the mistakes of his clan, Kuon doesn't care who he has to use or what methods he has to employ in order to achieve his goals, including his own sister Linne whose wishes both Hyde and Seth want to fulfill in their own way. Even his theme music serves as a contrast to both of theirs, featuring the same instruments (synthesized drums from Hyde, heavy guitar riffs from Seth) but setting them to a Dark Reprise of the very first song that Raito ever composed for the series in its debut trailer.
  • Freudian Excuse Is No Excuse: Lampshaded. In Hyde's ending, the former points out that it's better if he didn't listen to Kuon's backstory, as he would most likely end up pitying him and hesitate in killing him as a result, putting the entire world at risk in the process.
  • Gameplay and Story Segregation: In effect by default. As a Re-Birth, Kuon is one of the strongest characters in the story and almost completely immortal. In-game, he can be fought and beaten by just about anyone.
  • Heel Realization: In Hyde's ending, he finally realizes just how far he's fallen and makes no attempts to try and justify himself, fully accepting that he attempted to destroy the world by his own choice and allowing Hyde to kill him without regrets.
  • Humanoid Abomination: As a Re-Birth, he is basically a Void taking a human form. He even describes that Re-Births possess the exterior of a human while they resemble voids on the inside.
  • Katanas Are Just Better: Dual wielded a traditional set back in the old days. Now, he wields way more than just two.
  • Idiot Hair: To an almost comical degree. Kuon has a pair of ahoge that are so absurdly large that they end up looking more like a pair of antennae. If Carmine and Hilda's endings are any indication, that may just be a constant among Re-Births in general.
  • Leitmotif: Rebirth, Immortal Advent.
  • The Man Behind the Man: Is manipulating Hilda for his own purposes.
  • Master of the Levitating Blades: Kuon wields the Insulator "Imitation" by floating them around in the air and swinging them towards his opponents as need be.
  • Meaningful Name: "Kuon" is the Japanese word for "eternity".
  • Promoted to Playable: After ten years of being nothing more than mentions from other characters with some slight hints at his plans, Kuon finally takes the stage as a playable character in [Sys:Celes]
  • Quantity vs. Quality: Kuon's dynamic with Hyde regarding their swords. Kuon is the original wielder of the Insulator and can replicate its shape and overall function using his EXS ability and he can make a lot. That said, the imitations lack the Loop End ability that Hyde, the original Insulator's most recent wielder, possesses which is why Kuon was biding his time and manipulating Hyde into a position where he can challenge him for the genuine article.
  • Really 700 Years Old: He's an immortal being with eternal youth, in reality, he's around five hundred years old.
  • Red Baron: He is often referred to as "The Weaver of Eternity" or "Aeon".
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: His eyes are a deep red. They were originally a more purple shade like his sister.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Acts as the blue to Hyde, Linne, and arguably Hilda's red.
  • Sibling Rivalry: Linne wants to put an end to Kuon's plans, Kuon needs Linne's Seal of Reincarnation to realize them. Conflict between the two siblings is unavoidable.
  • The Right Hand of Doom: Kuon's Voided-out right arm is covered in Curse Commandments, alluding to the nature of Re-Births being human Voids.
  • Slouch of Villainy: His artwork has him pulling this off while levitating. He also pulls this off during his Infinite Worth EXS.
  • Storm of Blades: He wields his Insulator replicas similarly to a Murakumo unit, forming constructs with them to attack his opponents. While he's usually seen fighting with eight of them, he can manifest up to eleven and potentially even more at once.
  • Soul-Cutting Blade: Kuon is the original wielder of the Insulator, which he uses to free Waldstein from being converted into a void. Kuon apparently lost the sword when Higan stole it and fled to the Abyss, with Kuon wanting to get it back for a long time now, setting his sights and schemes on the Insulator's current wielder.
  • Then Let Me Be Evil: By the time he's finally fought, Kuon is so far gone that he's outright accepted the "other self" which controls his body now is simply who he is deep down. This takes a very tragic turn when he says this to his sister Linne, calmly reassuring her that he wanted all of this despite not being in control of his own body and that it's OK for her to want to kill him.
  • Tragic Monster: Kuon was once a noble, chivalrous boy who would go so far as to help anyone without hesitation, even his enemies. Now he's an immortal, hellish fusion between man and monster with enigmatic goals which involve heavy manipulation of those around him, including said enemies as well as those he once called his allies, who may secretly harbor regrets about his decision to become immortal.
  • Vagueness Is Coming: Kuon's plans have been kept in the dark for a long, long time. All we know is that it requires Linne being kept alive for her Art of Reincarnation (And kept under watch by Kuu to make sure no one loses track of her), Hilda being manipulated into opening up the Abyss, Seth and Chaos being used as middlemen to make sure no one is none the wiser, and Hyde also plays into it for currently unknown reasons. This all leads up to something Kuon himself calls Sistema Celeste. With the announcement of the sequel, which bears the namesake of [Sys:Celes] and where Kuon is confirmed to be playable, it seems we at long last seem to know what it exactly entails, and it could very well be The End of the World as We Know It.
  • Unlockable Content: Despite technically being a base roster character, Kuon isn't available to start with and needs to be unlocked via completing the arcade routes of a select few charactersnote . Alternatively, he can be bought as Downloadable Content.
  • Unmoving Plaid: The inside of his cloak features a red mist effect that acts as this. It even blends into the background of his IWEX, making it appear as if it's spilling out of his cloak.
  • Unskilled, but Strong: Despite having little combat experience, Kuon's natural swordsmanship allowed him to best Waldstein in single combat.
  • Villain Team-Up: Kuon brings over Waldstein and Enkidu to his cause for the Final Night. Waldstein joins to honor their friendship while Enkidu joins under the promise of the greatest challenge he'll ever face for when he gets his turn fighting Kuon. Waldstein also has no intention of letting Kuon fulfill his ambitions without one last bout.
  • Was Once a Man: Kuon used to be human, but the process of becoming an immortal Re-Birth has changed him into something else. His human side is still there, but it's no longer the one in control of his body, which is now almost 70% Void and dominated by the "other entity" that took residence within him when he underwent his transformation.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: Kuon's only desire is to atone for his own mistakes as well as those of his clan, even being willing to go so far as to die in order to do so. The problem? He's so fixated on his own redemption to such an insane degree that he's willing to use any means necessary in order to finally end his centuries-long existence, seemingly uncaring of the consequences his actions will have on the world itself and the people he feels he has no choice but to manipulate in order to accomplish his goals. Because of this, as well as his status as an immortal Re-Birth with the closest possible connection to the Hollow Night itself, this makes him a Villain by Default.
  • Who Wants to Live Forever?: Much like his sister and his old friend, Waldstein, Kuon has grown weary of his centuries-old lifespan and continues to carry out his plans with the hopes that he can finally die. The quote posted in Death Seeker above is notable when literally translated from Japanese, where Kuon all but begs whoever he's talking with to kill him.
  • Woobie, Destroyer of Worlds: Kuon went from a kind, chivalrous young man to a decrepit, quiet, and almost pitiful being on the edge between man and monster who wants nothing more than for his centuries-long existence to come to an end. The only thing that helps him cling on to what little shreds of humanity he has left is the robe he wears in the present day, which is specifically enchanted to stop him from completely degenerating into a Void.
  • Xanatos Gambit: Kuon's ultimate plan, Sistema Celeste, boils down to two outcomes, each one equally beneficial for him. Through manipulating the key factions that govern the Hollow Night, he will either end up with all the necessary pieces for him to venture into the Abyss to find and destroy an entity named Higan, or someone will end up killing him, which will free him from his endless existence of suffering as a Re-Birth with no control over his own body. No matter the outcome, Kuon will be satisfied with the result in the end.

Introduced in the Season Pass

The Night stalker who witnesses the deaths of all things - the "Black Monger"

"What in the hell?! How dare you presume to give orders to the mighty Uzuki! You ignorant wench. But since today is your special day... I suppose I can let you have the spotlight this once."

PROFILE:
Height:
Weight:
Blood type:
Date of Birth:
Weapon: Beloa
EXS ability: Necromance
Known aliases: The Black Monger, The Undertaker

Cruel, temperamental, egotistical, and harboring an unhealthy obsession with death and suffering, Uzuki joined Amnesia for the sole purpose of having an excuse to inflict as much pain as possible with her powers, and quickly rose up the ranks because of just how powerful she is. Despite her newfound status within the organization, Uzuki mostly tends to keep to herself, though mainly because no one wants to go near her. Recently, she has come to blows with Hilda over her goals of becoming a Re-Birth, and it's rumored that Uzuki plans to kickstart a hostile takeover of Amnesia.

Fitting her ghastly personality, Uzuki wields the EXS of Ghostly Husks: Necromance, which allows her to conjure several paranormal apparitions such as ethereal animals and large constructs of bone. In addition, she fights with a black, sharp-tipped parasol dubbed Beloa.

  • Animal Motif: Rabbits, in a rather morbid aversion of what they usually represent. In symbolism, Rabbits represent fertility and the beginning of new life. Compare that with Uzuki, whose powers are connected to death and the afterlife.
  • Ascended Extra: Her first and only physical appearance in the actual games was as a secret cameo in Hilda's ending in the first game, with her only other appearance being in a Valentine's Day illustration. Fast forward eleven years later, and she's now set to become a playable character.
  • Asskicking Leads to Leadership: Uzuki has been noted to be very powerful, and her abilities quickly earned her a spot as one of Amnesia's top brass.
  • Cute, but Cacophonic: Her voice is horribly grating.
  • Downloadable Content: The first DLC character of the Season Passnote  and is set for release in August 2024.
  • Expy: Takes a lot after Blair and Perona.
  • Foil: She acts as one to Carmine, funnily enough. Much like him, Uzuki is an unusually powerful In-Birth who roams the Hollow Night for no reason other than to use her powers to hurt others. However, Carmine is a complete loner who balks at the idea of joining any sort of group, and his reason for inflicting pain on others stems from a mixture of him being a Blood Knight who likes fighting and coming out on top more than anything else and his Inferiority Superiority Complex stemming from his belief that fighting is the only thing he is actually competent at, and it's additionally implied that his crueler actions are caused by his other half spawned from how much EXS he is capable of generating. Meanwhile, Uzuki has no ulterior motive other than being a Sadist who hurts people for the sake of hurting people, though she does seem to believe in strength in numbers, judging from her bothering to join up with Amnesia and fighting alongside several familiars. To add to this, Carmine ends up becoming a Re-Birth in his ending, and implies that he wants to Take Over the World afterwards. Uzuki couldn't care less about becoming a Re-Birth, even calling Hilda crazy for even wanting to do so, and her dreams of conquest go no further than claiming leadership of Amnesia for herself.
  • Four Eyes, Zero Soul: Has been described as being "cruel" and "immoral" by the devs, as well as having an extremely bloated ego. She also wears red, thick-rimmed glasses, in case it wasn't already obvious enough that she's one of Amnesia's worst.
  • Four Is Death: Uzuki gets her name from the Japanese name of April. In Japan, the number four is usually considered unlucky, with April even being referred to as the "month of death".
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: The top brass in Amnesia usually steer clear of her, due to how much of an unrepentant, egotistical Jerkass she is.
  • Hated by All: Nearly everyone in Amnesia wants absolutely nothing to do with her simply because of how nasty she is. Yes, this includes Hilda and Chaos.
  • Hidden Depths: If the 2020 Valentine's Day illustration is of any indication, then the small, snarky Uzuki might be something of a baker.
  • It's All About Me: She definitely holds herself in high regard, referring to herself as "Uzuki-sama".
  • Jerkass: According to Word of God, Uzuki is one of the worst in Amnesia. Not in the sense that she's a villain, but that she's just a really shitty person.
  • Little Miss Snarker: In the few lines of dialogue she has, she manages to insult Hilda's intelligencenote  at least fourtimes.
  • Living Clothes: Both her comically oversized hat and handbag appear to be alive.
  • Meaningful Name: As noted in Four Is Death, above, Uzuki shares her name with the japanese name of April, the fourth month in the year. The number four is heavily associated with death in Japanese superstition, which goes hand in hand with her Necromancy powers.
  • Necromancy: It's even the name of her EXS Ability. While the full extent of Uzuki's powers remain unknown, she is shown to be able to conjure ghostly bat apparitions and large bone constructs to fight.
  • Parasol of Pain: She carries around a black parasol dubbed "Beloa", completing her Elegant Gothic Lolita image. Said parasol also has a sharp, pointy, elongated tip.
  • Promoted to Playable: She first appears in the original game through Hilda's arcade mode ending, only to become a playable fighter years later in [Sys:Celes]
  • Red Baron: She goes by the nickname of "Black Monger".
  • Signature Headgear: One of Uzuki's most striking features is the absurdly large magician's hat she wears on her head. It's also sentient.
  • Vocal Evolution: Much like with Byakuya, Satomi Akesaka gives Uzuki a slightly deeper inflection while still maintaining the Cute, but Cacophonic edge, unlike the more higher-pitched, childlike voice she gave her in the first game.

    Ogre

Ogre

Lord of ten-thousand demons, the "Howling Demon King"

"At first I thought it was childish to create some sort of little club. However, this power is interesting, and an unknown power at that. I can understand wanting to band together."

PROFILE:
Height:
Weight:
Blood type:
Date of Birth:
Weapon: None
EXS ability: Oblivion Bane
Known alias: The Howling Demon King

The former leader of a group of In-Births called Bankikai, and a past associate of the woman now called Tsukuyomi. Bankikai's reputation as a faction once grew to such heights, that it put them under the eyes of both Licht Kreis and especially Amnesia. Ogre and the rest of Bankikai eventually did battle with Amnesia before unforeseen circumstances lead to the group's disbanding and his own disappearance... For a while, at least.

Nearly a year later, around the time that Kuon announces his plans for the Seven-Day Immortalize, Ogre - a man once thought dead and buried - is alive and kicking once again, and even he doesn't know how or why. With his group disbanded since his disappearance and no one to turn to, Ogre steps into the Night once again, searching for answers in regards to his return.

Ogre possesses the EXS of Illumination: Oblivion Bane, which grants him access to an ability called Gate to the Netherworld: The Gate of Hades, which not only significantly boosts his strength, but also summons a gate that releases a strange fog. This fog can also corrode armor and weapons.

  • Ambiguously Brown: Much like Waldstein, Roger, and Enkidu, Ogre has a slightly darker complexion compared to the other characters.
  • Back from the Dead: Someway, somehow, Ogre has returned to the human world after his body was consumed by the abyss after being wounded by Roger and the first thing he does following his return to the waking world is go searching for answers as to how exactly he managed to come back.
  • Casting a Shadow: According to Yuzuriha, his Gate of Hades ability causes him to be enveloped in a black aura.
  • Chivalrous Pervert: He jokes about how he wanted to create a group of In-Births solely to enjoy the company of beautiful women, to Yuzuriha's annoyance. While his fashion sense for himself and his two friends might suggest that he's a pervert, he has proven himself to be quite the gentleman when he pleaded for Amnesia not to harm either Strix or Zohar and for them to actually leave them alone if he didn't make it past a voided-out Roger.
  • Downloadable Content: The second character of the Season Pass, and is set for release in February 2025.
  • Eaten Alive: How Ogre meets his end at the hands of Roger. He gets better, somehow...
  • Foil: To Gordeau. Both are incredibly powerful In-Births with a demonic/death motif and both have an eye hidden away (Gordeau via a fringe, Ogre via a scar, leaving him semi-blind). While Gordeau often tends to work on his own and cannot bring himself to kill those who have turned into Voids, Ogre firmly believes in sticking together to survive and doesn't hesitate to kill friends of his or others.
  • Good Old Fisticuffs: Excluding his Gate of Hades, Ogre doesn't fight with any weapon to speak of, instead relying on old-fashioned, bare-knuckle brawling.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: When Roger turned into a Void and Gordeau was unable to bring himself to kill his friend, Enkidu stepped up to deal the mercy kill. Ogre however declared that he would be the one to do so, as he explained that he didn't know Roger when he was a person and thus would have the least guilt if he were to kill him. Ogre didn't survive the attempt and took a hit for Gordeau. Remember, this occurred AFTER Ogre's duel with Hilda and he's the one saving his "enemies".
  • Light 'em Up: While his power's attributes and capabilities are not explained, his clash with Hilda made quite the light-show.
  • Nice Guy: Ogre proved himself to be a considerate man who cares for his friends and enough about his enemies as well to carry the burden of killing a friend.
  • Promoted to Playable: Originally an NPC in Exe:Late[st]'s Chronicle Mode, he makes his debut as a playable fighter years later in [Sys:Celes]
  • Red Baron: Was briefly known as the Howling Demon King (or lit. Ogre Wailing King).
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: He acts as the red to Gordeau's blue.
  • Scarf of Asskicking: Wears a loose white scarf around his shoulders.
  • Scars Are Forever: Has a large scar across his right eye.
  • Signature Headgear: A white Stetson hat adorned with his group's insignia.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: This guy's sacrifice basically defined Gordeau and Byakuya's character arcs since if Ogre didn't do anything, Gordeau likely would have died to Roger and Byakuya and Strix would have never met.
  • Smoking Is Cool: He has a cigarette in his mouth the entire time he fights.
  • The Watson: Being new to the Hollow Night at the time, Ogre serves as one in Yuzuriha's Chronicle story so that she has a justification to give out exposition on the various rules on the power he wields and the dangers of the night.

The "Initiator" of the final act

PROFILE:
Height:
Weight:
Blood type:
Date of Birth:
Weapon: Elefee
EXS ability: Transition
Known alias: Izumi the Serene

A mysterious girl and acquaintance of Sakaki's.

  • Living Macguffin: Izumi's weapon Elefee is the third Judgment/Purification Weapon introduced in the series and like Hyde's Insulator, apparently has a will of its own. Going further than the Insulator however, Elefee actually speaks to Izumi and takes the form of a large fish-like entity instead of a traditional weapon.
