    Megumi Imae

Voiced by: Ai Nonaka (Japanese), Juliet Simmons (English)

President of Tomoko's (and later Tomoki's) student council.

  • Adaptational Early Appearance: In the anime, when she replaces the random girl holding the stack of papers that Tomoko accidentally runs into. Downplayed because this first appearance is in an earlier part of the chapter/episode she would appear in.
  • Butt-Monkey: Despite her status, Megumi can be prone to comical mishaps herself. Her panties get exposed from a gust of wind, she's embarrassed by spreading rumors of her being a pervert due to her dog's perverse actions, and the delinquents' antics cause no shortage of humiliation for her.
  • Class Princess: She's stated to be widely respected by everyone in the school, and is an absolute saint who keeps an eye out on even a social misfit like Tomoko. This made Megumi one of the few people that Tomoko actually admired during her most cynical periods.
  • Covert Pervert: Anna and Reina suspect she is due to her dog sticking its head under Masaki's skirt seemingly on command and apparently giving her cunnilingus. Megumi denies having anything to do with this of course, and insists that everything she knows about sex she learned from a friend.
  • I'm Taking Her Home with Me!: While she was in elementary school, she found a dog who had been abandoned and took it home with her. Unlike most examples, it was adopted and is still the family pet to this day. It's heavily implied that this mindset is also what led her to take notice of, and make it a point to look out for, Tomoko.
  • Only Friend: For a while, she was pretty much the closest thing to an actual friend Tomoko had in high school. She even tries claiming she's Tomoko's friend when Ogino starts grilling the girl on how her social life is going.
  • Named After Somebody Famous: Shares the surname of Toshiaki Imae.
  • Nice Girl: Some female students mention that she's popular with both boys and girls at the school due to her helpfulness. She is noticeably kind and even protective toward Tomoko and regularly goes out of her way to watch over the latter.
  • Put on a Bus: Since she's a year older than Tomoko, she graduates at the end of Tomoko's second year of high school. An omake from volume 14 of the manga reveals that she went to Aoyama University after graduating and she makes a proper return at the end of summer where she winds up spending a day at the beach with Tomoko and Yoshida's group.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: She only makes a handful of appearances before graduating but the impression she leaves on Tomoko is considerable which plays a major role in the latter's growth. Even after her graduation, she serves as a model for Tomoko's relationship with her own kouhai, Shizuku.
  • Student Council President: Goes without saying. She's depicted as being heavily involved with the school, leading things for the cultural festival, delivering speeches to the student body, and implementing holiday events like a wishing tree for Tanabata.
  • Throw the Dog a Bone: She does this frequently for Tomoko.
    • Chapter 21/Episode 12: Seeing Tomoko down after Yuu leaves at the end of the school festival, Megumi borrows a mascot costume and gives her a hug and a balloon. In Episode 12, she also mentions having to keep an eye on that "cute girl" after Tomoko ends up getting flustered out of trying to strike up a conversation with her after a gust of wind gave her a good view of Megumi's panties.
    • Chapter 42: Steps in once she sees Ogino browbeating Tomoko at the school gate for being such a loner, going so far as to say that she's her friend.
    • Chapter 51: She helps Tomoko after the latter slips in the hall, and accompanies the latter to the infirmary to have her nosebleed looked at.
    • Chapter 98: Despite her home being in the opposite direction, she joins Yoshida in walking Tomoko to the train station, after Tomoko gets stuck at school due to the rain.
  • Universally Beloved Leader: She's liked and respected by just about everyone at school, males, females, peers, and juniors alike, to the point where she's absolutely surrounded by admirers and well-wishers during her graduation ceremony. Even Tomoko in her most bitter state takes a shine to Megumi.

    Ogino

Voiced by: Sanae Nakata (Japanese), Beth Lazarou (English)

Tomoko's P.E. teacher. During Tomoko's second year she becomes Tomoko's homeroom teacher and becomes so again once she reaches her third year.

  • Adults Are Useless: Zig-zagged. She is one of the few people who actually noticed how isolated Tomoko was in her class, questioned her about it and tried to help her. Unfortunately, her initial efforts to help Tomoko make friends failed due to her bluntness and mostly just put Tomoko in more awkward situations. However, Ogino grouping Tomoko up with Yoshida, Yuri, and Ucchi for the school trip does result in her social circle expanding, with Yuri in particular becoming her first real friend.
  • Ascended Extra: Made her first, brief appearances in chapters 10 and 25 of the manga. Once she became Tomoko's homeroom teacher she was also given a larger role in the story.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: Her cheerful and energetic disposition combined with her need to meddle with her students' lives make her stand out as a comical character among the more straight-laced and uptight teachers. However, Ogino is very intimidating when she gets angry, and cows everyone immediately whenever she starts yelling.
  • Boyish Short Hair: Makes her look androgynous as a result.
  • Cannot Keep a Secret: Zig-zagged. She likes to spill out her students' secrets as long as she doesn't mention their names.
  • Cool Teacher: Attempts to be one, at least. She frequently tries to help Tomoko come out of her shell and socialize, and generally acts like a relatively lenient Reasonable Authority Figure when around her. Unfortunately, all of her efforts end up being seen as Unwanted Assistance by Tomoko, causing her to develop something of a grudge against her.
  • Deconstructed Character Archetype: Of the Cool Teacher trope. Her efforts to connect with her students on a personal level end up making them view her with contempt as an invasive annoyance rather than as a mentor that they can confide in.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: While her attempts to help Tomoko are heavy-handed and generally useless, she is correct when she points out that the girl needs to be more proactive and should not expect people to just approach her of their own accord. She also shoots down Megumi's attempts to come to Tomoko's aid by claiming that she's a friend of the junior student. While she was blunt to do so, Ogino was also correct in pointing out that Tomoko needs friends in her own peer group and that Megumi won't be able to help her after she graduates.
  • Last-Name Basis: Justified due to her being a teacher that Tomoko isn't particularly close to.
  • Named After Somebody Famous: Shares the surname of Takashi Ogino.
  • Out of Focus: She loses a lot of importance during the third year given that Tomoko managed to make more friends and so she has no real reason to butt into things anymore.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: While Ogino can be very stern and authoritative, she is willing to let things slide in extenuating circumstances. For instance, when Tomoko's field trip group tried sneaking out at night to get some food, she allowed them to go to a nearby convenience store since they slept past dinner, provided she accompany them.
  • So Proud of You: She always beams happily at Tomoko whenever she notices the latter in the company of her friends, and she likes to talk about how popular Tomoko has become whenever Ogino interacts with the student's family. However, like everything else she does, Tomoko finds the praise and attention more irritating than anything.
  • Unwanted Assistance: Tomoko's opinion on her attempts to help her make friends. Hina didn't seem thrilled about Ogino helping her prepare for her future career as a voice actress, either.

    Kosaka
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kosaka_1.jpg
Voiced by: Jun Fukushima (Japanese), Johnny DeLaCerda (English)

A friendly older student who lent a sleeping Tomoko his umbrella during a rainy day. Since then, she's developed a crush on him.

  • Anime Hair: Complete with a little tuft of hair across his face
  • Boyfriend Bluff: Tomoko attempts to pretend that she's dating him in an effort to impress Kii-chan. It works at first, but she's eventually forced to tell the truth after Kii-chan mistakes him tutoring another girl for him cheating on Tomoko and confronts him.
  • The Bus Came Back: Makes a brief reappearance in chapter 163, which establishes that he's now in college and that Tomoko is still awkward around him.
  • Last-Name Basis: He only told Tomoko his last name when introducing himself to her, further demonstrating how nonexistent their "relationship" actually is.
  • Love Interest: A one-sided and very minor example. Tomoko has a crush on him, but she also barely knows him. While he's pleasant towards her whenever they meet, he also pretty clearly doesn't harbor any particularly strong feelings for her.
  • Named After Somebody Famous: Shares the surname of Makoto Kosaka.
  • Nice Guy: Seems to be generally pleasant and kind, giving Tomoko his umbrella during a rainy day and acting patiently towards her usual awkwardness. The second time we see him, he's tutoring a girl, once again showing that he's a helpful individual.
  • Old-School Chivalry: Appears to be a rather classic gentleman, as seen by his polite and courteous treatment of even the strange and awkward Tomoko.
  • Pretty Boy: He's drawn with a noticeably more feminine face than most other male characters, and is seen as very attractive by Tomoko.
  • Satellite Love Interest: Mostly because his status as a potential love interest is entirely in Tomoko's head. Tomoko has only spoken to him a few times, and outside of being a Nice Guy, not much can be seen of his personality from their exchanges.
  • Umbrella of Togetherness: He first meets Tomoko when he lends her an umbrella during a rainy day, and she later becomes smitten with him.
  • The Unsmile: While generally an overall Nice Guy, Tomoko's Boyfriend Bluff stunt and getting confronted by Kii for "cheating" on Tomoko kind of strains Kosaka's ability to be nice. When he tries to smile off Tomoko's apology, it's shown that he is struggling to.

    Akari Iguchi
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/iguchi_akari.jpg
Voiced by: Kanami Satō (Japanese)

Tomoki's classmate from middle school, and later also from high school. Revealed to have a crush on Tomoki, much to Kotomi's distress.

  • A-Cup Angst: In Tomoko's words, she's "an A-cup...B-cup at best." Akari is devastated when Tomoko reveals this information to her crush, Tomoki.
  • Ascended Extra: She made her first, brief appearances in chapter 25/episode 3 of the anime (as one of the girls who brought Tomoki printouts from school when he was sick) and in chapter 41 (where she was revealed to have a crush on Tomoki). After chapter 83 she becomes a recurring character.
  • Beneath the Mask: While she presents herself as friendly and polite girl on the outside, Akari's inner monologue tends to be full of snark and frustration whenever she converses with people who try her patience, such as Kotomi and Sayaka. While she's eventually able to make peace with Kotomi and all her weirdness, Sayaka continues to annoy her until Akari has enough and just slaps her.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: While normally kindhearted, she can get pretty scary when pushed too far. When Sayaka accidentally kisses Tomoki, Akari enters into a state of Tranquil Fury where she completely brushes aside her friend's tearful apologies and expresses a desire to punch and even kill her.
  • Broken Pedestal: Eventually when she figures out that Kotomi isn't Tomoki's sister. She's willing to admit, at least in her Inner Monologue, that the girl is a huge pervert.
  • Butt-Monkey: Pretty much every chapter featuring Akari will just end with her flustered and humiliated.
  • Cannot Spit It Out: She turns into a Shrinking Violet in Tomoki's presence and is paralyzed by fear of embarrassing herself in front of him, which prevents her from confessing her feelings. It doesn't help that the one time she mustered the courage to try to act on her crush did result in her embarrassing herself in front of Tomoki in chapter 91.
  • Dull Eyes of Unhappiness: When she's in Tranquil Fury mode.
  • Imaginary Love Triangle: For a few chapters she was convinced that Tomoko is her romantic rival. Neither Tomoko nor Tomoki had any idea she felt that way.
  • In-Series Nickname: After the events of chapter 91, Tomoko coins "Dicky-chan" for her.
  • Love Hurts: So far her crush on Tomoki has only caused misery and embarrassment for her.
  • Named After Somebody Famous: Shares the surname of Tadahito Iguchi.
  • Nice Girl: When straight out asked about Kotomi by Tomoki, she thinks for a moment of admitting that she thinks Kotomi is perverted but sympathizes too much with her affection for Tomoki to actually do so. She instead tells him that Kotomi is a really innocent girl.
  • Paralyzing Fear of Sexuality: Later chapters show that Akari believes having sexual desires is something that makes one "impure"; as a result, she spends the first chapters after becoming a recurring character insisting that her crush on Tomoki has no sexual element whatsoever. In chapter 101 she finally acknowledges that she is also sexually interested in Tomoki, but this realization makes her loathe herself; in chapter 108 she calls both Kotomi and herself "vulgar perverts" in her thoughts.
  • Pyrrhic Victory: Feeling some measure of animosity for Tomoko during the sports meet due to the latter seeming to have some kind of relationship with her crush, Akari soundly beats her in a cavalry battle. However, not only does the victory feel shallow to her, but it gave Tomoko a chance to grope her, figure out her bra size, and report it to Tomoki. Akari gets nothing but thorough humiliation.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: She's the blue to Sayaka's red. She's more reserved than her friend, but also has a difficult time speaking her mind.
  • Tranquil Fury: She usually maintains a calm and measured demeanor when she gets angry. It's very notable in chapter 219, where she spends the entire chapter glaring at Sayaka without ever saying a word, but thinking some very dark thoughts about her friend and struggling to keep herself from socking her.
  • Unknown Rival: For the longest time, Tomoko had no idea that Akari considered her to be her chief rival for Tomoki's affections.
  • Unwanted Assistance: Gets some from her friend, Sayaka, in chapter 95 when the latter attempts to debate Akari's so-called perverted tendencies with Tomoko. All she ends up doing is embarrassing poor Akari and further solidifying Tomoko's impression of her.
Sayaka: Akari's been in love with Tomoki-kun since middle school! She's just a pure-hearted girl who wants to see Tomoki-kun's dick!
    Akari: Please just stop!
  • What You Are in the Dark: When her crush, Tomoki, asks her what she knows about Kotomi, Akari realizes she has an opportunity to completely sabotage her rival for his affections. However, before she can voice it out loud, she remembers how happy Kotomi was about previously being able to converse with him, and instead decides to say that she is "a very pure-hearted girl," painting her in as positive a light as possible and knowing no one will ever find out what she did either way.
  • Wrong Assumption: She makes two in chapter 83, when she manages to both mistake Kotomi for Tomoki's sisternote  and mistake Tomoko for Tomoki's suitor.

    Sayaka Yoda
Voiced by: Kanami Satō (Japanese)

Akari's best friend in both middle and high school. She's determined to help her friend finally connect with her longtime crush, Tomoki, but Sayaka's efforts leave a lot to be desired.

  • Accidental Kiss: Sprains her ankle during the class play after having her foot stomped on by Tomoki earlier, leading to her falling over and kissing Tomoki as a result.
  • Ascended Extra: She appears as early as chapter 25, coming to the Kuroki household alongside Akari to give some printouts to Tomoki. Sayaka becomes a recurring character much later.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: She is probably the only person in the whole series that can piss off Tomoki more that his sister and her Unwanted Assistance grates on Akari as well, who's ironically her best friend.
  • Matchmaker Failure: To her credit, she tries really hard to make Tomoki and Akari hook up but all of her attempts do nothing but to make both parts unconfortable and turn each of them against her. At worst, her attempts have backfired to make Tomoki think worse of Akari already.
  • Matchmaker Crush: After her Accidental Kiss Sayaka seems to have also developed a crush on Tomoki, warning Akari that if she goes too slowly she might steal him from her and crying when Yuri bluntly tells her that Tomoki seems to hate her.
  • Oblivious to Hatred:
    • She has no idea how much Tomoki has grown to hate both her and her aggressive pushes to get him and Akari together.
    • Said aggressiveness also made her Only Friend Akari to hate her as well, though Akari is more internal about it and therefore doesn't display them towards Sayaka.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Red to Akari's blue. Sayaka is the bolder and more assertive of the two, but her lack of a filter between her mind and her mouth means she says a lot of stupid things that only embarrass or irritate her friend.
  • Satellite Character: Her appearances are always made alongside and in relation to her friend Akari.
  • Shipper on Deck: She's very aggressive in helping Akari hook up with Tomoki. Unfortunately, her methods only humiliate her friend and annoy him.
  • Tsundere: She tends to get very argumentative towards a boy named Nakamura, but it's very evident she has a huge crush on him.
  • Unwanted Assistance: Her attempts to help Akari form a relationship with Tomoki always backfire and leave the poor girl embarrassed and no closer to hooking up with him.

    Shizuku Hirasawa
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/capture_1_8.PNG

A first year student at Tomoko's school and Tomoko's kouhai. Tomoko originally met her when she was taking the school's entrance exam and later reconnected with her when she entered high school. Her popularity with boys leaves her greatly unpopular with other girls and so she greatly looks up to Tomoko both as her senpai and as her first real female friend.

  • Because You Were Nice to Me: Pretty much the reason why she's so attached to Tomoko. Tomoko gave her some encouraging words and advice when she fell ill during the entrance exam, and Shizuku latched onto her ever since. Played With in that Tomoko never meant to be nice to her; she intended her advice to steer Shizuku away from going to the same school as her, and didn't think much of the younger student when she got in. However, Tomoko over time did soften up and started to treat Shizuku with more genuine kindness.
  • Bully Magnet: Girls just have it out for Shizuku and subject her to all sorts of Stock Shoujo Bullying Tactics. Even Tomoko's friends and acquaintances have a tendency to grab the Jerkass Ball around her.
  • Covert Pervert: Possibly. She acts innocent and has even admitted to being too scared to have sexual intercourse with her boyfriend, but Shizuku seems to know how to perform a handjob, which she demonstrates on a clay penis that she even models to look anatomically correct.
  • Dude Magnet: Shizuku doesn't seem to have any problems attracting boys to her side. On the flip side, she's disliked by all her female classmates as a result, hence why she doesn't have any female friends.
  • Even the Girls Want Her: Or at least Tomoko does because in her words Shizuku might be sly and try to butter up the boys but she looks hot doing it so she's okay in Tomoko's book. It should be noted that this does not apply to anyone else; other girls hate her.
  • Hero-Worshipper: Adores Tomoko, her first real senpai and female friend. During tanabata her only wish is to have Tomoko call her by her first name with no honorifics and when Tomoko does she's completely over the moon.
  • Horrible Judge of Character: Is under the impression that Tomoko, of all people, is a kind and thoughtful senior looking out for her when in reality, the older girl is initially apathetic to Shizuku at best and only hanging out with her to hear some spicy stories about her sex life. Though she's eventually proven somewhat correct as Tomoko does try to give her advice and spend time with her even though Tomoko stands to gain nothing from it.
  • The Ingenue: She's sweet, naive and attractive so she has no problem attracting boys. Although she seems to think they just want to be friends with her and is seemingly unaware of their attraction.
  • Innocently Insensitive: She's not a mean person intentionally, but she's woefully unaware of her Butt-Monkey boyfriend's obvious misery, doesn't seem all too keen on giving him emotional support when he needs it, and even blurts out his failings to others without even attempting to sugarcoat them. Tomoko suspects this might be why Shizuku doesn't have any real friends.
  • Named After Somebody Famous: Shares the surname of Taiga Hirasawa.
  • Only Six Faces: Shizuku is almost a dead-ringer for a younger Megumi Imae, which is why for the longest time people have been theorizing that they're somehow related.
  • Squee: To say she is positively elated when Tomoko calls her by her given name is putting it mildly.
    Tomoko: Shizuku...
Shizuku: KYAAAH! Senpai called me by my name! My [Tanabata] wish came true right away!
  • Stock Shoujo Bullying Tactics: A recurring victim of this. Chapter 132 reveals that she's ignored by her girl classmates, who are jealous of her popularity with boys. This also happened to her back in middle school, as her friends abandoned her when she started getting along with the boys. Likewise, Tomoko's friends do not welcome Shizuku with open arms when they find out that she's trying to befriend Tomoko; Yuri ignores her, Hina creeps her out, and Ucchi intimidates her. In chapter 142 Kotomi openly badmouths Shizuku after the latter shows some interest in Tomoki.
  • The Vamp: Other girls (including Tomoko) see her actions as an intentional ploy to seduce and entrance the boys around her. In reality, she seems to be unaware of the effect she has on the school's male population.
  • Undying Loyalty: To Tomoko.
  • Wrong Genre Savvy: She seems to be operating under the impression that she's the protagonist of a shoujo manga, viewing Tomoko as her kind sempai and even seeing her under an idealized shoujo filter.

    Reina and Anna
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rena_and_anna.jpg

Delinquents from another class who happen to be Yoshida's friends. In contrast to their friend, they're much more worldly.

  • Actually Pretty Funny: After seeing Tomoko on the receiving end of Yoshida's fury Anna finds her hilarious and invites Tomoko to sit with them at lunch sometimes.
  • Brutal Honesty: Anna calls Masaki a moron to her face in chapter 106. Later, seeing Tomoko and Shiki relaxing in an arcade rather than studying for midterms, she directly asks them whether they are both stupid in chapter 147.
  • Eye-Obscuring Hat: Reina's shadowed face is caused by one during the amusement park trip. Normally however there's no particular reason for it.
  • Face of a Thug: Since they style themselves as Japanese Delinquents, other students are wary of them and tend to give them a wide berth. However, Anna and Reina are only Rule Abiding Rebels at worst and are shown to be perfectly friendly and approachable, given how they both take an immediate liking to girls like Tomoko and Shiki.
  • The Gadfly: Reina seems to enjoy trying to get a rise out of other people.
  • Hidden Depths: Like Masaki, they're both implied to come from very well-off families. To wit, after they get into a fight with Masaki at Disneyland, they head over to DisneySea, which requires purchasing a separate ticket, just to buy a plushy that's only sold there (which was stated to be very pricey in and of itself) as an apology to her.
  • Hidden Eyes: Reina's eyes, and the entire top half of her face, is so far covered in permanent shadow.
  • Japanese Delinquents: A pair of them.
  • No Name Given: For a long time, they had no names. Reina's name was revealed during the amusement park field trip while Anna's was revealed when Tomoko showed Kii-chan around her school.
  • Odd Friendship: With Futaki, a geeky Gamer Chick.
  • Only Sane Man: Seems to be Anna's role in the trio.
  • Rule-Abiding Rebel: Though they style themselves as delinquents, they don't really engage in any criminal or antisocial behavior. About the worst things they do include talking a little bluntly, riding motorized vehicles around town when their school prohibits it, and getting into fistfights with each other. A What If? omake even shows them balking at the idea of repeating a grade and urging Tomoko to study more when she brags about how many classes she's failing.
  • Tareme Eyes: Anna's eyes are droopy giving her a laid back and sleepy expression.
  • Team Mom: As the most levelheaded member of their group Anna falls into this by default.
  • Those Two Guys: At the moment they fulfill this role for Yoshida. It's only fairly recently that they've even received names.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: Reina's blunt, cynical nature can clash with Yoshida's innocent and temperamental one which has, on a couple of occasions, led to them coming to blows. They seem to quickly make up, however.

    The Emoji Gang
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/0051989890.jpg
L-R: Kaede, Natsu, Nagi, Kayo, Miyazaki

A group of girls who are close friends with Ucchi. They were part of Tomoko's 2nd-year class, but along with Ucchi were transferred to a different class for their third year, much to the latter's dismay. Their friendship with Ucchi is the source of Tomoko's somewhat derisive nickname for them.

  • Foil: To Minami's cadre of friends. While Minami's friends are faceless their designs are unique. Minami's friends get a kick out of gossiping and badmouthing others, even making fun of Minami behind her back for coming to their class to eat lunch all the time. Ucchi's friends, on the other hand, are much friendlier even towards someone like Tomoko and their friendship with Ucchi is solid as a rock.
    • They also serve as one to Asuka's group. Whereas the Ucchi gang is incredibly close to each other and supports Ucchi on her attempts to get close to Tomoko, Asuka only seems close to Kaho and none of them understands Asuka's attachment to Tomoko.
  • In-Universe Nickname: Ucchi calls Miyazaki "Miya-chan".
  • Named After Somebody Famous: Miyazaki shares the surname of Atsushi Miyazaki.
  • Nice Girl: All of them come off this way, Nagi especially who's quick to warm up to Tomoko during the sports meet and invite Yuri to hang out during the study camp.
  • No Name Given: Initially anyway. They all have unique designs but their names are only revealed over a long period of time. It's not until chapter 172, nearly 100 chapters after their debut, that the last of them is given a name.
  • Odd Friendship: It seems to be the group's M.O. as they like going out of their way to try and be friendly with a wide variety of people. According to Nagi they originally only stuck to their small group but found that not caring about social distinctions was more fun.
  • Shipper on Deck: In chapter 152 they figure out that Ucchi's strange actions are caused by her fixation with Tomoko and actually try to help the two get closer, not that it works out. Special note goes to Nagi, who seems to be the only one that fully understands Ucchi has a crush on Tomoko.
  • Those Two Guys: In a sense the group as a whole falls into this as they're largely satellite characters for Ucchi. However among the group itself Miyazaki, Kayo and Nagi receive far more attention than Natsu and Kaede leaving the two of them to fall under this for the rest of the group.

    Asuka's Friends
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/asukas_friends.jpg
L-R: Miho Narita, Fuuka Sasaki, Kaho Kusunoki

A group of girls from class 3-6 who are Asuka's friends. Their first meeting with Tomoko, a group study session involving her and Asuka, leaves a large impression on them. They're joined by a fourth girl named Rise though whether she shares their class is currently unknown.

  • Academic Athlete: Subverted. Fuuka appears to be one at first as she's athletic and also aiming to get into Aoyama University. However, later chapters show that while she is indeed athletic, she's also incredibly dumb.
  • Accidental Pervert: Fuuka walks into the bathroom without knowing Tomoko is in there and sees her sitting on the toilet without any pants on. Fuuka, however, refuses to admit that it was just an honest mishap on her part and is of the opinion that Tomoko arranged for it to happen on purpose.
  • A Day in the Limelight: Kaho has one in the light novel anthology, which focuses on her first year, and how she befriends Asuka and Fuuka.
  • Ascended Extra: As has become common in the series. Fuuka and Miho both appeared during the sports festival in second year as cheerleaders and wouldn't reappear again until the sports meet in third year and have become regular characters since then. Kaho appeared a little more frequently though always as a minor character.
  • Big Eater: In Tomoko's words, Fuuka appears to have the appetite of a gorilla. At the study camp's breakfast buffet, she overloads her tray with a ton of food, which includes hard boiled eggs, curry, bananas, rolls, a mountain of salad, a pile of sausages and potatoes, and a glass of milk. It's likely thanks to her athleticism that she's able to stay slim.
  • Boyish Short Hair: Miho's hair is this.
  • Brainless Beauty: Fuuka is a Head-Turning Beauty and also one of the biggest Ditzs in the whole series, if not the biggest one.
  • Broken Ace: Fuuka is gorgeous, popular with boys, respected by girls, a terrific athlete, and great singer. She's also a complete knucklehead who's willing to do anything to show Tomoko up, and her efforts to do so have trashed her reputation at school.
  • Butt-Monkey: Fuuka in spades. Her fixation on sexual topics and figuring out the weird stuff with Asuka and Tomoko leads her to be publicly embarrassed and seems to have affected her studies and it only gets worse for her from there. By the end of the summer study camp even her own friends have labeled her as "worthless" while Asuka later admits that she's "a bit dim".
  • Covert Pervert: If she wasn't before then Fuuka seems to be turning into one. After the incident where Asuka offered to let Tomoko grab her breasts, she became obsessed with finding out whether or not it happened. After finally learning the answer Fuuka is surprised to find herself disappointed that it didn't.
  • Dumb Jock: Fuuka's physical gifts are many but she's definitely not the brightest bulb around.
  • Entertainingly Wrong: As Fuuka obsesses more and more about Tomoko and Asuka's relationship, she starts coming up with some out-there theories about them, from thinking Tomoko had Asuka and Yuu dye her pubic hair, to Tomoko intentionally tricking Fuuka into walking in on her in the bathroom.
  • Eyes Always Shut: Unless she's surprised Miho's eyes are like this to go along with her more mischievous personality.
  • Ethical Slut: Rise might be willing to give Fuuka sexual advice and teach her lewd terms but she puts her foot down at actually spreading a rumor (at Fuuka's own request no less) that Fuuka is a slut.
  • Feigning Intelligence: When it comes to the subject of sex, Fuuka tries to act like she is an experienced expert on the subject, spinning lies and reciting whatever her friend tells her just to troll Tomoko, who she knows is sensitive about her virginity. Emphasis on "tries;" Fuuka doesn't even know what any of the slang terms mean, let alone what a sex act like a handjob actually looks like.
  • Flanderization: When she was first properly introduced Fuuka was implied to be pretty normal, just hung up on Tomoko's weirdness. As time has gone on she's become quite possibly the dumbest character in the series and seems to lack anything in the way of common sense. Somewhat justified in-universe as her being consumed by her obsession with Tomoko but Miho and her other friends also treat her actions as not being all that out of the ordinary for her either.
  • Fun Personified: Seems to be Miho's shtick. She's constantly upbeat, prone to making jokes and is rarely ever seen without a smile. She even finds Tomoko's pervertedness hilarious and quickly takes to calling her Kuro-chan. During the study camp her own thoughts during class are centered on wanting to play around and her reasoning for wanting to shout at the sea is simply "youth".
  • Good Bad Girl: Rise, the fourth member of the group who Fuuka consults for sex advice as she's openly sexually active. According to her she's not that experienced however as she's "only" been with three guys.
  • Head-Turning Beauty: Both Fuuka and Miho are explicitly asked to cheer on the baseball team during third year because they're very popular with the underclassmen boys, especially Miho. If Tomoko's fantasies are anything to go by then she herself seems to consider Miho to be on the same level as Asuka and Yuu in terms of attractiveness.
  • Hidden Depths: As it turns out, Fuuka is a very good singer, which Miho admits to have been surprised by.
  • Hypocritical Humor: Fuuka is a frequent victim of this as part of her Butt-Monkey role. She sees or overhears other characters bringing up sexual topics only to get told that's not the kind of subject to talk about in public when she brings it up to those same people.
  • Mean Character, Nice Actor: Miho is a Nice Girl and Fuuka beyond her animosity towards Tomoko isn't really a bad girl neither but her characters in A Youth Like This are antagonists that are trying to close the literature club and Serial Rapists that are constantly abusing Yoshida's character.
  • The Nicknamer: Miho seems to liberally hand these out as she very quickly takes to calling Tomoko "Kuro-chan" and Yuu "Naru-chan".
  • No Name Given: The fourth girl went nameless until chapter 206 revealed her name to be Rise.
  • Pet the Dog:
    • Despite her leeriness towards Tomoko, Fuuka does give Asuka an honest, if perverted, suggestion in how she can get closer to the introverted girl.
    • She also participates in Tomoko's movie and tries to give her words of encouragment when she's nervous for presenting the movie. It doesn't help her.
  • Satellite Character: They all serve as this for Asuka intially. However the summer study camp gives all of them, especially Miho, some spotlight.
  • School Idol: Due to her looks and being good at sports Fuuka is very popular with the other students. Even Miyazaki seems to think highly of her... at least initially.
  • The Shameless: Fuuka shows herself to be this once she develops her rivalry with Tomoko. She pretends to be knowledgeable and experienced in all things related to sex just to rub the latter's insecurity about her virginity in her face, going so far as to spread rumors about herself being a total nympho. She doesn't appear to know or care that she's destroying her previously stellar reputation at school just to one-up a single awkward girl.
  • Shameless Fanservice Girl: Miho isn't put off at all by Tomoko's perverted antics, and reacts to the latter's ogling of her shaved crotch with outright amusement. Because of this Tomoko pretty quickly develops a liking for her.
  • Sitcom Archnemesis: Fuuka and Tomoko are this for each other though only internally. In their thoughts Fuuka thinks that Tomoko is a weird, gross pervert while Tomoko thinks that Fuuka is also a weird, gross pervert and a slut on top of it. After the third year summer break the antagonism is out in the open to the point where Fuuka tells an unnamed friend to spread a rumor that Fuuka herself is a slut solely so she can look like she knows more about sex than Tomoko.
  • Tomboyish Ponytail: Fuuka sports one due to being an athlete.
  • Unfazed Everyman: Kaho seems to be largely unbothered by all of the weirdos that surround her. Notably in chapter 173 she seems to take all of Komiyama's weird behavior, like bringing her phone into the sauna to watch baseball, in stride and makes an effort to talk to her about it.
  • Youthful Freckles: Kaho has them.

    Sachi Mima

Click here to see Sachi with eyes

A friend of Minami from another class. Like her friend she loves to gossip and badmouth others.

  • Alpha Bitch: She is definitely a bitch and seems to be the leading figure among Minami's group. Until she intentionally destroys it.
  • Arson, Murder, and Admiration: She likes to make fun of Minami and readily admits that her friend's openly negative and annoying qualities are why nobody likes her. That said she also seems to adore those same qualities about her since it means having another person willing to shit talk others.
  • Ascended Extra: Started out as a literally faceless mob extra before becoming the most prominent of Minami's friends and one of the main characters.
  • Can't Take Criticism: It's implied that for all that she dishes out she doesn't like having it flung back at her. Minami seems to be the one exception as being insulted by her actually works to begin mending their frayed friendship.
  • The Corruptor: Mako believes that her influence is why Minami turned out so bad. Oddly, an omake shows that it was Koharu who (unknowingly) convinced Sachi it was okay to joke about something like a dumb kid's death.
  • Despair Event Horizon: Realizing that Minami's grown apart from her and doesn't put as much stock in badmouthing others which causes her to intentionally destroy their group by revealing that Nori had been making fun of Maki's boyfriend.
  • Dull Eyes of Unhappiness: When her full face is revealed in chapter 188 her eyes are like this.
  • Eyeless Face: Her face is notably lacking in ocular organs, a trait she shares with the rest of her clique and numerous other background characters. At least until chapter 188.
  • Failed a Spot Check: She is incredibly dense when it comes to understanding what Tomoko and Tomoki's relationship is. She views the former as a possible rival for the latter's affections, but hasn't caught on that they're siblings despite knowing they both have the same surname. It takes Mako directly telling her that Tomoko and Tomoki are siblings in Chapter 220.3 for her to realise, and even then she’s unable to process this information initially.
  • Gossipy Hens: Along with Minami and the rest of their group. It seems to be one of the few things that unites them.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: She shows intense jealousy when she realizes that Minami is hanging out with Futaki and when the two finally make up she explicitly tells Minami to not bring Futaki around whenever they meet. She later displays resentment towards Masaki for cozying up to Tomoki, whom Sachi has begun to develop a crush on. This quickly extends to any girl that seems to get a point with Tomoki.
  • Hellish Pupils: When we finally do see her eyes, they're shown to be very dull, very dark, and very unnerving. They give the impression that she's shooting you with a Death Glare even while she's still smiling.
  • Hidden Depths: It's very heavily implied that she's much more melancholy than she lets on and her bitchiness is at least in part a means of feeling better about herself while trying to maintain the image of being cool and aloof. She's also perceptive to correctly guess and clever enough to then confirm with bait that Mako is a Shipper with an Agenda.
  • Jerkass: Is easily the biggest one in the series. She even has zero qualms talking bad about her own friends either.
  • Knight of Cerebus: Downplayed given the tone of the series and that she still has enough comedic moments. But she's so far the only character whose threat is taken seriously and her chapters are commonly low on jokes. She also stands out as the only jerkass character in the series whose negative traits aren't Played for Laughs.
  • Love at First Sight: It only takes Tomoki sitting with her oncenote  and exchanging a few wordsnote  for Sachi to become yet another girl to develop a crush on him, in large part due to her incorrectly conclusions in her head. Lampshaded a little:
Sachi (internal narration):"If I was a girl like that, I might fall for him easily. Wait, I am like that."
  • Never My Fault: She seems incredibly bitter at how distant Koharu grew from her, especially when she started hanging out with people Sachi deemed beneath her. Sachi never considers the fact that she was the reason Koharu started going her own way, as Sachi frequently mocked the fanged girl for her inability to make any other friends.
  • Non-Standard Character Design: Lacks eyes like most unimportant background characters. Even after she starts to gain more prominence however her design doesn't change.
  • No Sympathy: She's never all that sympathetic to Koharu Minami's plight of being stuck in a classroom all alone with no friends (save Mako), waving off her distress at best, and using it as a source of ridicule at worst.
  • Pathetically Weak: According to Koharu, she has a grip strength of 12kgnote . While this might have just been mocking on her part, Sachi was shown to be physically weak when she was unable to push the teacup ride at all, implying there might be some truth to it.
  • Pet the Dog:
    • Despite how much she seems to revel in being an unrepentant bitch, she genuinely likes Minami even when she intends to make fun of her and goes out of her way to do kind things for her like getting Minami a birthday cake. It's implied that it's because she likes and even admires Minami's ability to just naturally say whatever she's thinking.
    • When Koharu mocks Tomoki as likely being a pathetic virgin, Sachi comes to his defense, arguing that he probably isn't one and it's not a big deal even if he is.
  • Tranquil Fury: In a What If? omake her response to Tomoko insulting her is to cheerily laugh along and ask if that's what she thinks of her while Tomoko notes that she is definitely pissed. When she confronts Minami after spotting her at an arcade she never lets her calm demeanor drop though she's clearly unhappy.
  • Unknown Rival: She's the most recent girl to harbor a crush on Tomoki, and as such, starts to view all the other interested girls as rivals for his affections, even though she hasn't interacted with any of them and they're all clueless about her feelings. Of note is that she thinks Tomoko is her biggest rival, who doesn't even know she exists at all, and whom Sachi continues to fail to realize is Tomoki's sister.
  • With Friends Like These...: She claims that she likes Koharu, but Sachi really isn't a good friend to her. She's just as willing to bad-talk her as she will anyone else, loves to lord over her whenever she can (and outright says she dislikes the idea of Koharu being on equal standing with her), throws some pretty low blow insults at Koharu, and tries to control who she can and can't hang out with.
  • You Are Fat: She frequently attacks or pokes fun at Koharu's weight, likely due to her large appetite, even though the latter isn't really fat at all.

    Wada
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/654197998.png

A member of the popular clique from Tomoko's class, he's friendly and outgoing.

  • Ambiguously Gay: It's revealed that he gave his contact info to a guy hitting on him while he was crossdressing without hesitation and a backpack he's seen wearing is one that's stereotypically associated with gay men in Japan. He's also more than comfortable making jokes about having been with another man.
  • Ascended Extra: Like virtually every other character. He appears as early as chapter 4 but doesn't start becoming prominent until well into third year.
  • Attractive Bent-Gender: He makes a pretty convincing girl. In chapter 192.2 it's noted that while dressed as a girl during the class' maid cafe back in first year that he was hit on by another guy.
  • Keet: A very downplayed example but he's small and definitely seems to be the more energetic and outgoing of the main male characters in class.
  • Nice Guy: Seems to be easygoing and pleasant. He has no issue striking up conversations with Tomoko and seems to find her style of dirty jokes funny enough to try using them himself.
  • Older Than They Look: As a high schooler, he should be in his late teens, but he doesn't even look like he's started going through puberty yet.
  • Wholesome Crossdresser: Crossdresses again during Chapter 210-2 and states he doesn't mind Futaki's otaku friends fapping to him.
