Ayaka and Yurine
Shiramine Ayaka
Voiced by: Haruka Terui
A self-proclaimed "model student", she is obsessed with being the first at everything and thus sees her world turned upside-down when Yurine appears in high school.
- Aggressive Submissive: Kind of. For all her defiance, Yurine can play her like a harp when she's in a flirtatious mood.
- Armor-Piercing Question: She gives one to Yurine in chapter 11, but she's the one hit hard by Yurine's laconic answer.Ayaka: You say I'm special to you but… in the end, you would like anyone able to beat you, wouldn't you?"
Yurine: *Beat*… You may be right. - Belligerent Sexual Tension: Not belligerent on Yurine's side, but on hers, definitely.
- Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Subverted. When she's alone with people close to her like Mizuki or (though she hates to admit it) Yurine, she's quite aggressive and stubborn. But that doesn't mean the kindness and helpfulness she shows towards her classmates isn't genuine. The few times she has a supporting role in another girl's arc (mostly in volume 8 with Hikari and 9 with Mikaze), she appears much friendlier than when she's the focus.
- Character Development: Chapter 15 shows that she has largely gotten used to Yurine's presence and has become somewhat more conscious and accepting of her sweet side. In any case she doesn't reject her as strongly as early on. Continued in chapter 23 where she lets Yurine spend the night with her on the beach, whispering what seems to be a "thank you" and kissing her forehead. At that point, while she still wants to defeat her, she no longer shows any desperation or anger about it. By chapter 40, her motivation has shifted from wanting to defeat Yurine so that she can forget about her to wanting to defeat her so that she can admit her own feelings to her.
- Class Representative: Unsurprisingly, she seems to be this (at least in role).
- Determinator: She will not give up until she has gotten her first place back from Yurine, and won't allow Yurine to give up either. By chapter 35 it actually has become a double-edge sword in their relationship: she refuses to bond with Yurine further as long as she hasn't defeated her, but at the same time she won't acknowledge any bond with her beyond their competition (despite obviously showing that she cares for her). This is the opposite situation from chapter 11 mentioned above, in a way.
- Expressive Hair: Mostly in the early chapters, where they tended to float around a lot. It became more straight and static as the art got somewhat cleaner around volume 5.
- Go-Getter Girl: Ayaka sees it as absolutely imperative to be the best at absolutely everything.
- Good Angel, Bad Angel: Subverted, as their roles are reversed. The good angel tells her to focus on being the best and reject Yurine at all costs; the bad angel tells her that Yurine isn't a bad person and that there's nothing wrong with being friends with her.
- Hidden Buxom: She turns out to be far more busty than she seems in her uniform. She's apparently a D-cup according to Yurine.
- "Not So Different" Remark:
- It's not as immediately obvious as with Yurine, being the School Idol and helping various people around at school, but as we go on it's increasingly clear that she doesn't have any actual friends either. Mizuki even sarcastically points it out in chapter 18.
- In another sense, during Ayaka's Heroic BSoD she acts antisocial and listless, much like Yurine's default state. Again, this is pointed out by Yurine herself (who had some Character Development in the meantime) in chapter 35.
- Out of Focus: Despite technically being a protagonist, there are actually very few chapters from her point of view (if you don't count the extras). Chapter 1 and 2, chapter 11, half of chapter 15, chapter 22-23, chapter 40 and that's pretty much it; in other chapters she only appears for a few pages, if at all, and volume 7 is primarily centered on Yurine with Ayaka in a supporting role. It doesn't help that, rather ironically, Ayaka almost only interacts with Yurine (and sometimes Mizuki) while Yurine herself intervenes in other characters' arcs. This only changes in the last two volumes, where she briefly gives advice to Mikaze in volume 9 and finally gets full focus in volume 10.
- School Idol: And that's her pride, even if Yurine is no.1 in grades.
- Second Place Is for Losers: She does not take losing to Yurine by three points lightly.Mizuki: Why does it bother you so much to be second? It's awesome.
Ayaka: Yeah, for someone like you who is around the 150th place, being first or second probably doesn't make much of a difference! - Smart People Wear Glasses: She occasionally sports these when studying.
- Tareme Eyes: Art Evolution made her distinctively drooping eyes more prominent, making her look somewhat less aggressive in later volumes. It might also serve to outline her bad eyesight.
- Tsundere: While she usually shows an admirable façade at school, she shows a more aggressive side when alone with Mizuki, and completely loses her composure when it comes to Yurine. She can admit she is awesome and can't help but look at her constantly, but refuses to acknowledge that she's attracted to her. Made more amusing by the fact that even Yurine herself can see it. Interestingly though, that dynamic starts to be reversed in volume 7-8, where Yurine is now the one losing her composure while Ayaka calmly listens to her worries.
- Well Done Daughter Girl: Implied in a flash-back, where her mother scolds her because she got "only" 95/100 at a test, while Mizuki's mother praises her for getting an 88. And confirmed in chapter 22 where Ayaka breaks down under the pressure and decides to say "screw that, I no longer care if I'm not the best".
- Workaholic: She will study to death and work harder than any student, but she admits than she doesn't really have a precise goal beyond "being no. 1". This seems to come at least partly from her mother's overly high expectations.
Kurosawa Yurine
Voiced by: Kaori Mizuhashi
In the same class as Ayaka, she is a "genius" in a nutshell. Nobody can beat her and she usually spends her time sleeping. Yet one day, after Ayaka has helped her open herself a tiny bit, she falls in love and becomes obsessed with her, thinking she has found the one person who can best her.
- The Ace: She is good at everything she does, be it in studies, sports, or even art. But since she succeeds at everything without even trying, she can't get invested in anything.
- Animal Motifs: During her more excitable moments, she's drawn with dog ears.
- Asleep in Class: Her default mode. If she's ever seen awake during class, it's because the teacher woke her up.
- Caring Gardener: Her increasingly genuine interest in gardening parallels her growing sociability as the series progresses. She starts as an isolated girl who joined the gardening club more or less out of obligation, to a caring senpai who's willing to make friends and tries to make the gardening club prosper again. By the end of the series, she decides that she wants to become a florist.
- Character Development: She has gained quite a few social skill points since the beginning of the series, and has become slightly less fixated on Ayaka alone (although she's still her main motivation). She even decides to join a club eventually. Chapter 22-23 is an important step, as for the first time, Yurine tries to interact with Ayaka not as a "rival" or a one-sided crush, but as someone she genuinely cares and worries for, giving her words of comfort that would have been unthinkable at the start of the series. Volume 7, being mostly from her point of view, emphasizes how much more fulfilling her life has become since she met Ayaka… and how much Ayaka, on the other hand, is still stuck in a state of mind not unlike that of the early Yurine.
- Cool Big Sis: Sumire sees her as this, and well, she has reasons to.
- Covert Pervert: She may not show it all the time, but in addition to their competition, she's also definitely curious of Ayaka's body.
- Deuteragonist: She's as much of a protagonist as Ayaka, as a good chunk of the chapters about their relationship are from her own point of view. Her Character Development is also somewhat more noticeable than Ayaka's.
- Ditzy Genius: Sure she can ace any test and learn at the speed of light, but that doesn't prevent her from occasionally being strangely clueless or taking odd actions − like trying to catch a paper stuck in a tree, even though it's obviously out of her reach and she's sitting on the second floor window.
- Friendless Background: According to herself. In the first chapter, Chiharu notes that her excess of ability makes her hard to approach, and she is pretty distant herself. Though meeting Ayaka, Mizuki and Ai helped her open up it seems.
- Green-Eyed Monster: Downplayed but clearly played straight. Yurine envies/admires Ayaka because she has a "role" in their school (see I Just Want to Have Friends below), and participates in life to a degree that Yurine can't.
- Heavy Sleeper: Because she feels like she has nothing better to do than sleep, as she considers herself a bother for other people.
- I Just Want to Be Normal: She's sick of people praising, relying on or being jealous of her because of her talent. All she wants is to find someone who will make her feel like an ordinary girl, and Ayaka is that person.
- I Just Want to Have Friends: Played with. She wants to belong somewhere, but is too dismissive of (or possibly disillusioned from past experiences with) people to engage with them.
- Innocently Insensitive: She's so apathetic about talking to anyone, for any reason, that she comes off as rude. By the end of volume 7, she has thankfully improved quite a bit in this department.
- Insufferable Genius: Has shades of this when she rubs Ayaka's "no.2" ranking in her face just to piss her off.
- Lonely at the Top: And one reason she falls in love with Ayaka is that, finally, someone seems to be able to (eventually) best her.
- Luminescent Blush: In chapter 35, she sports this when Ayaka holds her hand (because Yurine forgot her gloves); and later, for the first time her teasing backfires as Ayaka's (supposedly reluctant) kiss completely makes her lose her composure.
- Mood-Swinger: Usually aloof and bored, but whenever she is with Ayaka, she can go from euphoric to teasing to pouty to Cloud Cuckoolander, all in an instant. In any case, she is clearly in heaven just by being with her.
- No Social Skills: Generally ignores people, doesn't censor her speech, often intrudes on Ayaka's personal space, etc. As of chapter 22, she's improved with regard to the latter.
- Photographic Memory: Implied, as she can memorize an entire textbook page with one casual reading.
- Too Much Information: She ogles Ayaka. We know this because she tells her.
- The Gadfly: An expert at rubbing Ayaka the wrong way.
- The Tease: She takes an intense delight in playing with Ayaka, often physically. It can go quite far, yet the latter shows surprisingly little resistance to it.
- Single-Target Sexuality: She has eyes only for Ayaka and only seems to feel any kind of satisfaction when she is at her side. Though chapter 11 subverts this when Ayaka tells her that in the end, she would just love anyone who can beat her. Yurine's answer is that it might be true, to Ayaka's shock. Afterwards, she herself starts to worry that her feelings for Ayaka may not go further than that.
- "Shut Up" Kiss: Gives one to Ayaka in chapter 12, when the latter warns her that her club activities might detract her from the tests.
- Supreme Chef: Par for the course. So supreme that she can cook while sleeping.
- Took a Level in Kindness: Through her interactions with Ayaka, Ai, and the gardening club, she becomes considerably less of a jerk over time, although she still has her occasional bouts of teasing.
Mizuki and Moe
Senoo Mizuki
Voiced by: Yumi Uchiyama
Ayaka's cousin, a year older, and a member of the track team. While her fans call her a "prince", she's actually shyer than she looks.
- Boyish Short Hair: She deliberately cut her hair short to invoke this and create a contrast with Moe's "cuteness".
- The Confidant: Sort of. As her cousin and roommate, she's the only person with whom Ayaka doesn't feel the need to wear her "model student" mask, and is thus used to her more aggressive side; in return, Ayaka also listens to her worries regarding her relationship with Moe.
- Harem Seeker: Moe once suspects that this is the reason she cut her hair… and discards the idea a second after, deeming it too ridiculous considering Mizuki's personality.
- Imagine Spotting: In chapter 3, she wonders why Moe is wearing high-heels in Ayaka's Imagine Spot where she steps on Mizuki.
- Important Haircut: The reasons she cut her hair in middle-school are all related more or less directly to a trait of her personality. She also notes that it allows her to be a bit more self-confident.
- Insecure Love Interest: She finds Moe beautiful, but because of that was afraid that she would look too plain at her side. She is also quite reluctant to let Yurine join the track team, thinking that Moe no longer considers her good enough − it doesn't help that this is also what Ayaka (maybe biased by her perfectionist vision) suggests.
- In the Valentine's day special, she panics after Moe tells her she was cute back in middle-school − as if she wasn't anymore. Cue Imagine Spot of Moe leaving her and saying that she prefers "young and innocent girls".
- Shrinking Violet: She was extremely shy in middle-school, and still is to an extent. That's apparently one of the reasons Moe fell for her, since she finds it "cute".
Nikaidō Moe
Voiced by: Manami Numakura
Mizuki's soul-mate since their middle-school days. She's quite assertive and determined to get what she wants − notably Yurine joining the track team, of which she is the manager.
- The Comically Serious: She tends to say rather weird or off-the-mark things while keeping the same deadpan expression.
- Fiery Red Head: Most of the time she comes off as The Stoic, but deep down she's quite passionate. Depending on the author's mood, color pictures have her hair going from light brown to some shade of pink.
- I Kiss Your Hand: Does this to Mizuki at the end of chapter 3, in a sort of Lady and Knight pose. It gets across the point that yes, she does need her and no, she won't leave her for someone else.
- Living Emotional Crutch: Downplayed, but Mizuki says that she is willing to run as long as Moe is looking at her, hence her distress when she thinks Yurine is going to "replace" her. In chapter 16 Moe realizes that Mizuki is too emotionally dependent on her, and decides on a "Moe-abstinence" period (taking abstinence from your favorite food as an example).
- Innocently Insensitive: She has a bad tendency to "help" Mizuki by doing things that end up hurting her feelings more often than not, only because she doesn't tell her what she actually has in mind. Her inner monologue in chapter 4 and Mizuki's Talking to Themself moment in chapter 16 show that both of them are somewhat aware of the problem.
- Meaningful Name: "
Moe", written with the same character as the anime concept based around cuteness. However, her personality and behaviour are sometimes… not Moe at all (see below). - Secret Chaser: She can't bear not knowing something about Mizuki, even as mundane as the reason she keeps her hair short. And apparently becomes even more curious when imagining Mizuki's embarrassed (thus cute) face should she find out.
- Stalker with a Crush: Her bag is full of photos of Mizuki, and not all of them were taken with the latter's knowledge.Moe: Well, you see, it seems that I have a bit of a "collecting mania". I'm aiming for the full collection while I'm at it.
Mizuki: That's called being a stalker, Moe…
Chiharu and Izumi
Kusakabe Chiharu
Voiced by: Ayaka Fukuhara
Ayaka and Yurine's classmate, she's a rather aloof and no-nonsense girl. She's initially in love with her senpai Maya, but starts going out with Izumi at the end of volume 2.
- Defrosting Ice Queen: While she remains pretty quiet and serious, being with Izumi has certainly done a lot to bring out her sweet side by volume 6.
- Dope Slap: To Ai. When it's Izumi it becomes either noogies on the temples or a punch on the top of the head.
- Forehead of Doom:Lampshaded by both Maya in one instance, and Izumi who calls her "Deko-senpai" (deko meaning "forehead").
- Has a Type: Her character file notes that she tends to be attracted to older girls. Though she does accept to go out with her kouhai Izumi, eventually − and she grows far more fond of her than she wants to admit.
- Hot for Teacher: She used to love her piano teacher, before meeting Maya.
- Interrupted Declaration of Love: Whether she was about to say the three words to Maya in chapter 7 is unclear, but either way the latter stops her by putting a finger on her lips and simply saying "thank you".
- Perpetual Frowner: She's rarely seen smiling, in contrast to the hyperactive Ai.
- Straight Man: Usually plays this role towards Ai's antics, or even Maya; and later Izumi.
- Sudden Humility: In chapter 9, after the Almost Kiss scene with Izumi, she wonders if Maya was in the same position towards her (i.e. being aware of the other's feelings but not being able to reciprocate them). The chapter is even titled "Reverse".
- When She Smiles: Finally smiles in chapter 8 after saying goodbye to Maya just in time before she leaves. As Izumi puts it…Deko-senpai… I think I might like your face actually.
Akidzuki Izumi
Introduced in chapter 8
Voiced by: Kanae Itō
A year younger than Chiharu, she comes to school every day on her bike, which is against Seiran's regulations. As a result she is one day called out by Chiharu… who actually talks with her just to kill some time. Izumi ends up developing a crush on her "Deko-senpai".
- Alliterative Name: Akidzuki Izumi.
- Almost Kiss: At the end of chapter 9, her lips come suspiciously close to Chiharu's, before the latter asks her why she behaves that way. Izumi tells her to make an educated guess.
- Annoying Younger Sibling: Her big sister Ayumu sees her as this.
- Book Dumb: Not particularly good at school, nor very diligent, much to her sister's annoyance.
- Cute Little Fang: Apparent when she opens her mouth, like in the image above.
- Large Ham: Whether it's to rejoice or complain, she doesn't do it halfway, and often speaks in a faux theatrical tone.
- Never My Fault: Played for Laughs in chapter 9, as after dreaming of Chiharu she wanders around the school looking for her and gets help from Moe, but insists that it's entirely Chiharu's fault.
- Tsundere: She's at first annoyed by Chiharu's attitude and her presence every day, but when they suddenly stop seeing each other, she realizes that she actually misses her. Then she goes all the way to the high-school building to see her and "complain".
Yukina and Towako
Ooshiro Yukina
Introduced in chapter 12
Voiced by: Ryōko Shiraishi
In 3rd year of high-school, she's the president of the gardening club. To prevent it from being closed, she one day grabs a random girl passing by - who happens to be Yurine - and more or less forces her to sign in the club.
- Club Stub: She drags Yurine into the club as a desperate attempt to save it, thinking that Towako will follow her. But it turns out Towako has… other plans for the club.
- Comically Missing the Point: When Yurine suggests that the one preventing the club from recruiting must be someone close to her, Yukina starts to wonder if she has a Split Personality.
- Dude Where Is My Respect: She has this reaction whenever Yurine says she would prefer to be with Ayaka rather than with her.Yukina: For a kouhai, you're not cute at all, you know that?
- Fiery Red Head: Her hair is a slightly reddish brown, and she has the hot-blooded personality to go with it.
- Hidden Buxom: Even moreso than Ayaka, going by this illustration.
- Large Ham: With a cunning touch to go with it. Her personality is kind of a mix between Moe and Izumi.
- Ojou: She apparently has a huge garden and a grandmother that can afford Seiran's school fees for two people.
- Your Size May Vary: In chapter 12, her braids only go down to slightly above her chest, but a few chapters later they go all the way down to her waist. The author herself makes fun of this in an omake.
Mita Towako
Introduced in chapter 12
Voiced by: Mai Nakahara
The "vice-president" of the gardening club, and Yukina's childhood friend. She's rather incompetent at gardening but loyally sticks with Yukina anyway.
- Be Careful What You Wish For: She wants the rose garden and their memories of it to remain pure and untainted… so she decides to let the gardening club disappear so that no one can taint it in the future. When she "succeeds"… it doesn't make her as happy as she thought.
- I Kiss Your Foot: Does this in chapter 15 after Yukina forbids her to "run away" from her just before they have a soft, quiet kissing scene. It serves to further show a devotion and love for Yukina that border on worship at times.
- Psycho Supporter: Downplayed. She seems to follow and obey Yukina without questions… until it turns out she's also quite possessive of her and has a completely different idea of how to "save" the club.
- Stepford Smiler: Her smiles don't have much enthusiasm behind them.
- Traitor Shot: She has a few in chapter 13, either covering her eyes or putting her in shadows, all with an eerie smile.
- White Hair, Black Heart: She's not evil but her possessiveness towards Yukina and actions to "preserve" the rose garden can be a tad questionable. And she tends to have slightly unsettling expressions.
Sawa and Itsuki
Itō Sawa
Introduced in chapter 21
Member of the archery club, she's a competent but slightly mischievous girl. To interview Ayaka for the Information Committee's newsletter, she has to team up with Itsuki, who has an unexplained grudge towards her.
- Affectionate Nickname: "Saa-chan", her nickname from grade school, that Itsuki still uses.
- Brutal Honesty: Case in point, she wants to proceed "smoothly" to ask Ayaka about the rumours surrounding her titular "strange disappearance". When the interview starts, she just bluntly throws in the subject, with no introduction. Itsuki notes that she "doesn't even need to read her heart", as she's not one to mince her words.
- Camera Fiend: She seems to have a thing for taking photos on the fly. Considering Itsuki wants to be a model, it may prove a useful skill.
- Eating the Eye Candy: After a while, Sawa can no longer take her eyes off Itsuki because of how beautiful she's become. And she doesn't even try to hide it.
- Test Kiss: In chapter 24, Itsuki half-jokingly tells her that if she can kiss her, maybe she'll consider aiming to be a model again. Sawa actually does it, to Itsuki's shock.
Nishikawa Itsuki
Introduced in chapter 21
A tall, graceful and pretty freshman who ends up in Sawa's care. It turns out she was her old neighbour, and is quite angry at Sawa for having forgotten her… and a "dream" they apparently shared.
- Childhood Friend Romance: While Sawa remembers her as a friend she used to play with, Itsuki's feelings are visibly much deeper and much less platonic.
- Defrosting Ice Queen: At first she acts pretty distantly towards Sawa despite her feelings for her, being not quite able to forgive her. After the latter kisses her on a dare in chapter 24 though, she starts to act like, well, a girl madly in love − to the point Sawa is a bit scared by the change.
- It Meant Something to Me: Sawa has completely forgotten about their promise to become models together, nor was she all that serious about it to begin with… But Itsuki took it very seriously and feels like all her efforts to achieve it have been wasted.
- Luminescent Blush: She provides plenty of those in chapter 24, as Sawa starts to "turn the tables" on her.
- Statuesque Stunner: She towers over most girls, and chapter 24 spends a lot of pages to point out how gorgeous she is. The mole under her left eye helps too.
- Stepford Smiler: Her "smiles" when she talks with Sawa hardly have anything friendly about them. She does end up smiling genuinely in one instance, though, much to Sawa's surprise. In chapter 25, however, her smiles have gotten a lot warmer.Sawa: "Would you look at that. You can actually have a cute smile when you try!"
- When She Smiles: Pointed in the above quote, and also Played for Laughs in the chapter 24 omake, where two of her classmates are literally dazzled by her smile.
- Why Can't I Hate You?: Seeing that Sawa didn't recognize her, she tried to hate her, but couldn't manage to.
Amane, Nina and Ryō
Asakura Amane
Introduced in chapter 26
One of Izumi's classmates in high school, who confesses her love to her out of nowhere during the "flower offering" trend. A very sentimental girl who firmly believes that there's nothing wrong with loving several people simultaneously.
- Living Emotional Crutch: Nina thinks that "no place on earth feels better than by Amane's side", and Amane's the one thing she doesn't want to lose.
- The Matchmaker: As her family runs a flower shop, she uses the flower exchange fad to help potential couples, showing her very altruistic side.
- Nice Guy: Always ready to help, and clearly tends to put other people's happiness before her own. Even when other girls refuse her "red ribbon", she lets it slide with a smile despite being obviously hurt. The downside of this is that she assumed that Nina was completely okay with her way of thinking, which creates some trouble later on.
- Polyamory: She's all for it, and has absolutely no problem telling Izumi that she likes two girls. The one problem she has is that not everyone shares her conception of love, and it's implied she has faced rejection many times. Even Ryou is taken aback at first, despite confessing to her a second before.
- Unrequited Love: Izumi doesn't know her and can obviously not reciprocate her feelings, but Amane's words do make her reflect on whether there's really one "right" form of love. Amane herself takes the rejection pretty well.
Yuunagi Nina
Introduced in chapter 28
Amane's girlfriend and the first girl to have exchanged "red ribbons" with her. She's a rather sarcastic and seemingly not very friendly girl, at least towards Ryou.
- Boyish Short Hair: Goes with her rather blunt character.
- Can't Live with Them, Can't Live Without Them: In a pretty incredibly short amount of time, she goes from despising Ryou to realizing she needs her presence. Although she always keeps a love-hate relationship with her.
- Early-Bird Cameo: She appears in a single panel next to Amane in chapter 26, but only starts to have a role two chapters later.
- Green-Eyed Monster: Amane thinks that Nina would understand her and be totally accepting of her new relationship with Ryou. Alas, it turns out she's very much not okay with it, and "advises" Ryou to get away from her if she wants to avoid heartbreak.
- Inconvenient Attraction: After all she does to keep Ryou away from Amane, she finds herself pretty confused and upset at her own growing attraction towards her.
- Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Pretty defiant and jerkish towards Ryou, but it's more a mix of fear that she would take Amane away from her and, later on, her own complicated feelings towards her.
- Kind Hearted Cat Lover: "Kind-hearted" is an overstatement, but like Ryou, she completely melts when she sees kittens. That's how her Internet self "Shin'ya" is busted by Ryou.
- Meaningful Name: Her internet nickname "Shin'ya" means "full night", which is the direct opposite of Ryou's nickname.
- Tomboy with a Girly Streak: She's probably the most boyish character in the series and tends to not chew her words, but she does have a thing for cute kitties.
Hiruma Ryō
Introduced in chapter 28
A rather introverted but kind girl who got injured after falling from her bicycle. After weeks of Amane helping her during class, she ends up falling in love with her, at first unaware of the latter's polyamory philosophy.
- Aloof Dark-Haired Girl: Played with. She gives this impression to the others, being very tall, dashing and somewhat distant, but she's also very sweet and a little shy. It doesn't help that all of her friends are in other classes, which makes people mistakenly think she's the loner type.
- Bookworm: She spends a lot of time reading, which contributes to the above.
- Commonality Connection: She's in heaven when she discovers Amane and her both love mystery novels… and that Nina doesn't. On the other hand, she shares a love for cats with "Shin'ya" (aka Nina), while Amane prefers dogs.
- Chekhov's Gunman: Minor example, but a scene in chapter 27 briefly mentions a girl who fell from her bicycle and hurt herself, with no actual relation to the events of said chapter. Turns out she was that girl.
- Hiding Behind Your Bangs: Has a strand of hair falling in front of her left eye, reinforcing either her shy side or her "cool" side, depending on the scene.
- I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: Subverted. In this case, making Amane happy means accepting a relationship with her to "ease her loneliness", despite the trouble that Nina's jealousy could bring. Despite genuine feelings for Amane, it takes Ryou some time and courage to make that decision.
- Kind Hearted Cat Lover: A single cat pic is enough to fix her mood. That's how she befriends "Shin'ya".
- Living Emotional Crutch: Sort of. It doesn't take more than a few conversations with her for Nina to realize that Ryou always gives her exactly the words she needs.
- The Matchmaker: Zig-zagged. Her appearance first disturbs the relationship between Amane and Nina, but then she's the one who helps fix it, and then she acts as the third leg that balances the three's polyamorous relationship.
- Meaningful Name: Her internet nickname "Mahiru" means "broad daylight", which is the direct opposite of "Shin'ya".
- Shrinking Violet: While she does have friends in other classes, she usually stays alone in her own, only talking with an Internet friend she has never met. Until Amane starts to help her.
- Sdrawkcab Name: Uses the name "Mahiru" on the Net ("Hiruma" with just the last syllable put on front), which is partly how Nina realizes they're one and the same.
Haine and Aika
Aoi Haine
Introduced in chapter 31
A second-year middle-school girl who joins the gardening club and becomes Yurine's first "kouhai". She wishes to become like her, but also comes to realize some of Yurine's issues. She wishes to become quickly independent, as she's tired of relying on her aunt Aika.
- Affectionate Nickname: Aika calls her "Hane-chan", based on her she pronounced her own name as a toddler ("Haane"). And Haine is starting to find it a little embarrassing, being in middle school and all.
- Be Careful What You Wish For: She spends chapter 33 snubbing Aika and saying she wants to be independent, but in the next chapter she becomes quite insecure when she realizes that she might have to live away from her in the near future. It's best showcased by a scene in chapter 34 where she's walking in front of Aika one page, saying that doesn't need her help… and hiding behind Aika's back the page after when they bump into Itsuki, who is older than her.
- Brutal Honesty: While she's a nice girl, she doesn't hide anything of her impressions about her new senpai, positive or negative. This actually helps Yurine in a way.
- Innocently Insensitive: She outright asks Yurine if she doesn't feel uneasy to have such an "empty" life, making Yurine blackout for a while. She does feel bad about it afterwards, though.
- Naïve Newcomer: She doesn't really know anything about gardening, nor is she all that interested in it, but she joined to be with Yurine, whom she sees as a role model… at first. It doesn't take her long to realize that Yurine isn't nearly as perfect as she looks.
- Third-Person Person: She speaks in the 3rd person in Japanese, giving her a mild "spoiled child" vibe.
Yukimura Aika
Introduced in chapter 33
Haine's aunt, big sister and first piano teacher. She's very doting on her niece, to the point Haine started to get irritated by it. She's in 3rd year of high school.
- Absurdly Youthful Mother: Aunt in this case. She's actually much closer in age to Haine than to her own older sister and they grew up together, so their relationship is pretty much that of siblings (Haine actually calls her "nee-chan", which is not how teenagers normally call their aunts).
- Ambiguous Situation: Her relationship with Haine is both that of aunt and niece, siblings, senpai/kohai, and chapter 34 heavily implies she has more than platonic feelings for her. In the end, the only thing we know for sure is that their relationship is… unique and hard to classify. Probably the farthest Canno could go without making it outright incestuous.
- My Beloved Smother: She does everything she can to indulge her niece, but Haine starts to feel like she's too dependent on Aika and treated like a child.
- Nice Guy: Almost to a fault. She's always smiling and never gets angry, but that's one of the things that strains her relationship with her niece, who feels like Aika fails to consider her feelings.
Hikari and Nagisa
Torayama Hikari
Introduced in chapter 36
A member of the student council, and running for its presidency, she's the nice but opportunistic kind. She considers Nagisa as her archenemy… but also happens to live with her.
- Fiery Redhead: Dark reddish brown hair with matching eyes to signify her abrasive personality.
- Jerk with a Heart of Gold: From Nagisa's point of view at least, her haughty personality hides a deeply caring attitude.
- Suspiciously Similar Substitute: Both in character, in appearance (including the headband), in her role within the school and in her fierce rivalry with Nagisa, she's very reminiscent of an early Ayaka. It's no coincidence that she's introduced when Ayaka herself has considerably mellowed out.
- Tiger Versus Dragon: She's the tiger (the "tora" in her name), bold, passionate and pretty easy to upset.
Tatsumi Nagisa
Introduced in chapter 36
A slightly nonchalant girl who is also in the student council and running for the election. Due to some circumstances, Hikari temporarily lives in her house.
- Brilliant, but Lazy: For all her academic prowess in school, she lets herself go quite a bit when at home.
- Can't Live with Them, Can't Live Without Them: She's adamant that she and Hikari will never get along, yet she admits that she needs Hikari's presence to keep her in line.
- Curtains Match the Window: Greyish platinum hair with pale gray eyes, all emphasizing her composed and slightly distant demeanor.
- Luminescent Blush: Has a pretty violent one when she realizes she just handed Hikari a glass she had drank in.
- Self-Serving Memory: Played for Laughs. She initially hated Hikari so much that she tried (and almost managed) to forget her existence.
- Sugar-and-Ice Personality: Appears rather cold and distant like a "cool beauty", to the point some students are a bit scared of her. But in the end she's pretty agreeable.
- Tiger Versus Dragon: She's the dragon (the "tatsu" in Tatsumi), cool and collected to the point of nonchalance if she's not careful.
Mikaze and Asuka
Hagimoto Mikaze
Introduced in chapter 41
An outgoing fan of cosplay who met and fell in love with Asuka in a convention. She tries in vain to make Asuka get along with other people. One of Ayaka's classmates in second year.
- Anguished Declaration of Love: Confesses her feelings for Asuka soon after they become close, with heavy blushing and a panel of worried anticipation before the latter answers. Notable for being the first "normal" confession in the series at the time of volume 9 and also the first relationship that ends in a (temporary) breakup.
- Commonality Connection: She and Asuka met through their love of cosplay and further bonded by being fans of the series "Lyrical Seira" − also a Call-Back to Sawa and Itsuki's arc in volume 5.
- I Just Want to Be Special: What she ponders for a while in chapter 42, thinking that instead of trying to fix Asuka's attitude, she should have strived to be like her instead; before quickly realizing she just can't do that.
- Love at First Sight: Lightly crushed on Asuka who was cosplaying as a magical girl, before meeting with her again cemented her feelings.
- Loving a Shadow: Mikaze obviously had a highly idealized view of Asuka, who in her eyes is beautiful and "lives in a dazzling way", taking risks that she wouldn't dream of. Because of that, she spends a lot of chapter 42 blaming herself for the failure of their relationship, thinking she just couldn't live up to Asuka's standards.
Sakurada Asuka
Introduced in chapter 41
A 19 year old girl who had to retake her third year due to an injury. Because all of her friends graduated without her, she's reluctant to interact with the other girls at school. Except with Mikaze.
- Aloof Dark-Haired Girl: Aloof because she can't be bothered with caring about her junior classmates. Ultimately she decides to end her relationship with Mikaze because she plans to leave the city after her graduation − probably one of the reasons she stayed alone in the first place.
- Defrosting Ice Queen: That seemed to be happening slowly through her relationship with Mikaze, but as time passes she starts to freeze up all over again knowing that they will be separated when they graduate.
- It's Not You, It's Me: Pretty much the reason she gives for breaking up, citing that she and Mikaze are too different and that she doesn't feel able to maintain a long-distance relationship. It doesn't stop Mikaze from thinking it was her own fault.
- The Fashionista: Likes to wear fancy outfits and change her hairstyle every day − one of the things that drew Mikaze to her as they met during a cosplay session.
- First-Name Basis: Emphasized when Mikaze gives her real name to Asuka, with the latter softly repeating it while stroking Mikaze's face in a rather sensual panel.
Other
Uehara Ai
Voiced by: Naomi Oozora
Chiharu's best friend, has a bright and energetic demeanour that makes her easy to befriend.
- Book Dumb: In chapter 11, Ayaka has no trouble believing Ai when the latter says she didn't study for her test.
- Genki Girl: Always shows overflowing enthusiasm when she is in a good mood. Or even in a bad mood.
- Girls Love Stuffed Animals: Being the girliest girl in the series, she has a thing for cute teddy bears. She offers one to Maya as a lucky charm and is the judge of the teddy-bear-making competition between Ayaka and Yurine in chapter 18.
- Nice Girl: According to Ayaka, and even Yurine seems to agree, as Ai's the closest thing to an actual friend she has made.
Hoshino Maya
Introduced in chapter 6
Ai and Chiharu's beloved senpai, and the latter's roommate, in third year. She has decided to apply for a public university to study astronomy, and will thus leave Seiran the next year.
- Cool Big Sis: She'd like to be, and Ai does see her as a big sis, but she's a bit too clumsy to convincingly play the "mature senpai" part.
- The Ditz: A downplayed example, but she can be a bit… absent minded at times, forcing Chiharu to act a bit like her mom.
- It's Not You, It's Me: She rejected (at least) two girls' feelings, but blames only herself for being "unable to return them". Her actual feelings for Chiharu remain unclear. The volume 2 omake implies that she may actually reciprocate those feelings, but never acted on them.
- Meaningful Name: Her name can roughly translate as "a night full of stars", which is fitting for her love of astronomy.
- Put on a Bus: She goes to a faraway university after she graduates in chapter 10. Volume 2 as a whole focuses on she, Ai and Chiharu dealing with the prospect of their separation.
- Second Love: She's Chiharu's second crush, and one Chiharu really didn't want to part with.
- Sweet Tooth: A bonus page of chapter 27 sees her having a coffee with Ai... and there is literally more sugar than coffee in her cup.
Kurosawa Sumire
Introduced in chapter 6.5
Yurine's little sister, who appears in an interlude chapter. She came to see who was this "Shiramine Ayaka" who took her sister's attention away from her.
- Annoying Younger Sibling: She seems to irritate Yurine a bit. Ayaka, however, still thinks that Yurine is the more annoying of the two.
- Clingy Jealous Girl: A rare female example of My Sister Is Off-Limits She does not accept that the sister she adores was "stolen" by Ayaka… before she falls for Ayaka herself.
- Onee-sama: How she starts to call Ayaka after crushing hard on her. Ayaka irritatingly notes that she shouldn't need to as she already has a real big sister.
Aizawa
Introduced in chapter 12
The accountant of Seiran High's student council, who has to deal with her less-than-competent sidekicks.
- Everyone Calls Him "Barkeep": Was only known as "kaikei" ("the accountant") before the chapter 38 extra finally gave her a name.
- Perpetual Frowner: Considering the people she has to deal with, she has reasons to be a bit grumpy.
- Recurring Extra: Usually appears when something involving the clubs or sudent council occur, and even in one "little theater" extra.
- Smart People Wear Glasses: She has to manage the whole funding of the clubs and such. The glasses only emphasize how hypercompetent she is.
- Sugar-and-Ice Personality: For all her grumpiness, she's apparently pretty goodie-two-shoes, which her accolytes mercilessly exploit.
- Surrounded by Idiots: Every one of her appearances has her compaining about the laziness or incompetence of her fellow student council members.
Machida Kaoru
Introduced in the chapter 6 extra/chapter 18
A girl who was in the same class as Yurine in middle-school, and is apparently infatuated with her but never had the courage to approach her.
- A Day in the Limelight: Chapter 18 and 19 are, unusually, told from her background character point of view, as she tries to muster her courage to finally talk to Yurine.
- Cannot Spit It Out: She cannot spit out… anything when Yurine is in front of her.
- Cloud Cuckoolander: As lampshaded by Kohagi and Momiji, Kaoru's idea of "getting closer" to Yurine involves… sewing a patchwork together. This, and her other Imagine Spots, make her appear quite dreamy.
- Early-Bird Cameo: She appears in the chapter 6 extra, the only one that features not two, but a single girl. And she is also present in the background in the very first title page of the series − Canno herself said that she was waiting for the right time to introduce her properly.
- Hopeless Suitor: Considers herself this when she sees how much Yurine loves Ayaka. She jokingly (?) calls it a "disappointed love".
- Luminescent Blush: She is visibly in heaven when Yurine thanks her, and then says hello to her with a smile.
- Memento MacGuffin: Downplayed with Yurine's lost pencil. Kaoru picked it up but could never muster the courage to give it back. It's only years later that she manages to, which allows her to finally talk to her idol/crush.
- Oblivious to Love: Everyone Can See It, but chapter 19 seems to indicate she's oblivious to her own love, still insisting on becoming "friends" with Yurine. Her two friends Momiji and Kohagi are dumbfounded when, after helping Kaoru to invite Yurine to the summer festival… she invites them too, even though they obviously intended to leave her alone with Yurine. Chapter 19's title is even "Tell me that's love".
