The Main Cast

    Kae Serinuma
Played by: Kana Hanazawa (drama CD, Japanese), Yuu Kobayashi (anime, Japanese), Jeannie Tirado (anime, English), Nonoka Yamaguchi & Miu Tomita (live-action film, Japanese)

The 2nd year heroine of this series. Kae's a super hardcore otaku and fujoshi who secretly ships her classmates Igarashi and Nanashima. She's initially overweight, but when her favorite anime character dies, she becomes distraught and holes up in her room for a week before coming out and discovering she lost all of her weight. Her newfound beauty attracts the attention of the four boys.

  • Beautiful All Along: Kae losing weight kickstarts the entire plot.
  • Chivalrous Pervert: Despite her rather dirty mind on Yaoi, she is a caring person who will always be there to help others.
  • Chronic Hero Syndrome: Serinuma has a habit of jumping to the aid of others, sometimes even when what she's doing is beyond her ability.
  • Covert Pervert: Kae is a huge Yaoi Fangirl and is excited to see boys in compromising positions. There's also that incident where she finds out about the color of Shinomiya's nipples...
  • Cute, but Cacophonic: Kae makes some very shrill screams whenever she's going full throttle for anything.
  • Formerly Fat: She used to be pudgy, but became much thinner after shutting herself in her room for a week.
  • Innocently Insensitive: In her romantic relationship with Mutsumi, she often disregards the time they spend together whenever she has a fan event to go to. Because he lets her do it because he wants her to enjoy herself, she doesn't have a real inclination that she's done wrong, especially when he catches her with his best friend at a Kachuu Ranbu event together.
  • Love Epiphany: Towards Mutsumi in chapter 45.
  • Nice Girl: Despite her rather dirty mind (especially when it comes to thinking about male/male pairings), Kae's the nicest character next to Mutsumi, as all of her classmates were also friendly with her even before she lost all her weight.
  • Oblivious to Love: Kae has no idea that the guys are pining for her despite multiple dates. Besides, she'd rather ship the boys with one another. This gradually changes as the story moves forward.
  • Official Couple: With Mutsumi, whom she gets together with in chapter 46.
  • Shipper on Deck: Her most distinctive trait is her love of shipping the boys with one another, namely Igarashi/Nanashima.
  • Ship Tease: She has tons of this with everyone in her harem, specially with Igarashi and Mutsumi.
  • Single Woman Seeks Good Man: She ends up falling in love with the very sweet Mutsumi, who's probably the nicest character of the whole series.
  • Stout Strength: Fat!Kae is frighteningly strong, once smashing Shinomiya into a wall by accident after regaining her weight.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Pretty!Kae looks a lot like her mother when she was younger, enough that her father mistakes Kae for her mother when he sees her for the first time in years.
  • Unwanted Harem: Serinuma often feels overwhelmed by the boys flirting with her, and would much rather just ship them with each other over herself.
  • Viewers in Mourning: The entire plot kicks off because she starved herself in her room after her beloved Shion died in Kachuu Ranbu.
  • Weight Taller: Inverted. She seems to grow in height after becoming thinner.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: Or rather reptiles in general. Turns out as a kid, she was fond of a frog in the garden, but then a monitor lizard ate it in front of her. She was afraid of reptiles ever since. However, she was able to get over it when helping to find Shinomiya's pet iguana.
  • Yaoi Fangirl: Serinuma being such a hardcore fujoshi is the main schtick of this series.

    Yusuke Igarashi
Played by: Yoshimasa Hosoya (drama CD, Japanese), Yuki Ono (anime, Japanese), Alejandro Saab (anime, English), Fuju Kamio (live-action film, Japanese)

A popular and reliable classmate of Serinuma who's part of the school soccer club. He's Nanashima's best friend and is unafraid in his interactions with Nana, thus fueling Serinuma's fantasies.

  • The Ace: Igarashi's best at anything involving sports.
  • Big Ol' Eyebrows: Igarashi sports a pair of well-defined eyebrows, and it's one of his prominent physical traits in his Super-Deformed form.
  • Birds of a Feather: With Nishina, even if they don't like to admit it. They even work together as editor and mangaka after graduation.
  • Boy Next Door: Though not a neighbor, Igarashi is a classmate of Serinuma, and so he's a regular face for her.
  • Crazy Jealous Guy: All the guys technically qualify, but Igarashi is notable for almost always being the first to try and steal Kae away, as well as being the most competitive over her.
  • Deuteragonist: He is clearly the main guy, at least the closest thing this manga has to one. Out of the other suitors he is the one who got most screen time, specifically at the beginning. The development on his relationship with Kae is very notorious, to the point that other characters came to notice that and become jealous of it. Besides Yuusuke is one of the main catalysts for Nana and Nishina's character development, as he plays a vital role in their character arcs.
    • His role seems to be downplayed later on, as the story shifts more towards Kae and her relationship with Mutsumi, he still has some panels dedicated to him though.
  • Foil: To Mutsumi. Igarashi is impulsive, passionate and competitive. This contrasts with Mutsumi's serene and calm personality.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: Iga's first love, Kotoha was this for him after she realized that he has found his ideal girl, Kae.
    • He accepts the fact that Kae fell in love with Mutsumi, and encourages him during her love confession. Later he, along with the others, warns Kae to check her priorities in order to not ruin her relationship with Mutsumi.
  • Lovable Jock: Naturally as a member of the soccer club, Iga's the most athletic of the boys. He's also something of a natural charmer.
  • Love Epiphany: When Serinuma regains her weight, Igarashi sees her personality hasn't changed, causing him to seriously fall in love with her for real.
  • Mr. Vice Guy: Igarashi easily gets jealous whenever someone's with Serinuma, but aside from that, he's generally a pretty good guy.
  • Nice Guy: When he is not in his over-jealousy mood, Igarashi tends to be very polite, considerate and cheerful, plus he was nice to Kae before she got thin. Kae remarks to herself how pleasant is to hang around with him because of his charming personality.
  • No Sense of Personal Space: He is very hesitant on having physical contact with Kae, like sitting extremely close to her or holding hands. He actually tries to kiss her, only to be rejected since Kae couldn't stand her heart beating too fast. This change thanks to his Character Development.
  • Satellite Character:
    • Not so literally but he is kind of this. Mostly because compared to the other suitors, he has literally no character aside from Kae. We don't know who his parents are, if he even has them. We don't know if he has siblings, or what other things he does in his free time, and he is the only one who's development has been specifically based on building his relationship with Kae.
    • The only person we meet from his past is an ex-crush who at the end of the arc agrees that Igarashi has already found the right girl for him.
    • We know from Word of God that he has a younger brother, but he doesn't even appear in the manga.
  • Second Love: Igarashi admits that he doesn't love his former senpai Kotoha anymore, due the fact that he is truly in love with Kae.
  • Shipper on Deck: A kinda weird case. While he still loves Kae, he seems to understand she's falling for Mutsumi when he visits him and Kae in the hospital. He then wishes for him to wake up, both for his and Kae's well-being, and doesn't seem surprised when she confesses that she's fallen in love with Mutsumi.
  • Ship Tease: He has a lot of this with Kae.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: Though besties with Nanashima, the two are just as likely to butt heads with one another.

    Nozomu Nanashima
Played by: Tatsuhisa Suzuki (drama CD, Japanese), Keisuke Komoto (anime, Japanese), Orion Pitts (anime, English), Asahi Ito (live-action film, Japanese)

Igarashi's best friend. Nanashima is a fair bit more surly than Iga, but the two are like peas in a pod, fueling Kae's fantasies of shipping the two of them together.

    Hayato Shinomiya
Played by: Hiroshi Kamiya (drama CD, Japanese), Yoshitsugu Matsuoka (anime, Japanese), Justin Briner (anime, English), So Okuno (live-action film, Japanese)

A 1st-year and a member of the medical committee. Shinomiya ends up having a crush on Kae after she loses her weight. Unfortunately, Shinomiya is also the least imposing of the group, having an overall wimpy look to him as well as being something of a klutz.

  • All the Other Reindeer: Shinomiya used to be picked on due to his half-blooded heritage.
  • Attractive Bent-Gender: Crossdressing Shinomiya has proven to be quite popular, even landing him a fan club once.
  • Berserk Button: Don't call him "cute!"
  • But Not Too Foreign: Shinomiya's mother is Norwegian, contributing to his lighter hair and skin.
  • Butt-Monkey: It's easy to mistake Shinomiya's role as the guy who gets all the crap.
  • Can't Hold His Liquor: Shinomiya immediately gets drunk by eating chocolate bonbons, which contain low alcohol content.
  • Crocodile Tears: He manages to help the group escape during the kidnapping arc by pretending to cry from a Potty Emergency.
  • Dragged into Drag: On at least two occasions, he has to crossdress: once in a school play where he plays Snow White, and another as a princess in a theme park.
  • Even the Guys Want Him: On several occasions, he's able to make people fall for him for his feminine appearance, to his dismay. His Unwanted Harem and Stalker with a Crush were all men. He's able to use that to his advantage when he helps everyone escape during the kidnapping arc.
  • In-Series Nickname: Igarashi calls him 'Shino'.
  • I Want to Be a Real Man: Because he's younger than the rest of the group and has a fragile build, Shinomiya wants to be seen as manly and jumps at any opportunity to do so.
  • The Klutz: Shinomiya, unfortunately, has quite a clumsy streak, which isn't helped by his lack of tact. Often, he screws things up for the other guys.
  • Lovable Coward: Despite wanting to be more manly in Kae's eyes, he's also easy to scare. Nonetheless, Kae doesn't mind his company. He eventually becomes a bit more of a Cowardly Lion, easily brought to tears but trying his best anyway.
  • Love Hurts: While the others were able to walk off and congratulate Mutsumi for being chosen by Kae, Shinomiya has the worst reaction, as he's in tears and is hitting him repeatedly.
  • Luminescent Blush: When in tears, embarrassed, or even angry, Shinomiya blushes easily.
  • Men Can't Keep House: Shinomiya doesn't know how to do housework, so his house is a mess when his parents move away. For a period of time, Nanashima comes to help him with cleaning and cooking.
  • Open Mouth, Insert Foot: Has a bad habit of accidently saying just the right thing to make situations worse, such as when they were trying to help Serinuma and Nishina reconcile.
  • Overshadowed by Awesome: Shinomiya really wants to be seen as someone more admirable in Serinuma's eyes, but put next to everyone else, he seems very unimpressive.
  • Pretty Boy: A-chan notes that Shinomiya is a "pretty boy", and he can also pass for a girl when crossdressing as well.
  • Prone to Tears: Shinomiya comes off as delicate and cries easily, though he'd like to be seen as being manlier.
  • Sitcom Archnemesis: Nanashima and Shinomiya butt heads with each other the most frequently, even on matters outside Serinuma.
  • Tsundere: Described as such, often taking umbrage towards Serinuma's hobbies, but still strongly wanting her interest. He is a rather well-written one; Shinomiya is presented as a serious and mature character, but it soon becomes clear that he's just socially awkward. In the manga, his character profile explains that he becomes 'flustered and cute' when he is complimented.
  • Unwanted Harem: Shinomiya has a fan club from his crossdressing as Princess Bunny Ears, who call themselves his "knights." At one point, after his parents move away, they keep giving him food without him knowing, causing him to be rightfully frightened and paranoid.

    Asuma Mutsumi
Played by: Takahiro Sakurai (drama CD, Japanese), Nobunaga Shimazaki (anime, Japanese), David Wald (anime, English), Hokuto Yoshino (live-action film, Japanese)

A 3rd-year student who is also president of the history club. Despite being the oldest of the group, Mutsumi is known for his highly laid-back personality, being the least competitive over Kae out of the others. However, he can get surprisingly aggressive whenever Kae seems threatened.

  • Beware the Nice Ones: When he's pissed, everyone's afraid.
  • Brutal Honesty: Downplayed in that he's not caustic. He's able to tell what he thinks and give constructive criticism straight out without hesitation or malice.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: Mutsumi's floaty demeanor makes him seem like he always has his head in the clouds, but he's actually far wiser and perceptive than he lets on.
  • Even the Guys Want Him: He's so nice and people-loving that even the other suitors occasionally end up with their hearts skipping a beat for him. Even his friend Yashiro, to somewhat melodramatic results.
  • Extreme Doormat: Where Kae is concerned, after they hook up. Even though he'd like to do more personal things with her or hang out with her more as a couple, he lets her do what she wants and doesn't try to talk to her about his mixed feelings.
  • Last Guy Wins: Kae ends up choosing him. Despite being the one who's known Kae the longest and having been friends with her for more than a year already at the start of the story he is the one introduced last in the story, if we exclude Nishina.
  • Mellow Fellow: Very easy-going, and known for almost never losing his cool.
  • Nice Guy: Out of everyone, Mutsumi-senpai is the nicest character in the entire cast. That said, his kindness still has limits.
  • Nosebleed: A habit of his, apparently, whenever he gets too stressed with certain situations. His relationship with Kae ends up making the nosebleeds more frequent.
  • Oblivious to Love: Amazingly towards his own feelings. Due to not really understanding romantic love and lack of experience, he didn't realize his feelings for Kae until his brother came along. As it turned out, he actually fell in love with Kae long before she got thin.
  • Official Couple: With Kae, from chapter 46 onwards.
  • Otaku: As the president of the history club, Mutsumi gets rather excited for anything history related. When Kae's interest shifts to Kachu Love, Mutsumi's able to fit in with easily due to its relation to history.
  • Primal Fear: Mutsumi unfortunately has a crippling fear of dark, confined spaces, thanks to his older brother.
  • Sibling Yin-Yang: Mutsumi and his older brother Kazuma are quite different from one another, Asuma being a pure-hearted boy, while Kazuma is an absolutely shameless flirt.
  • Simple-Minded Wisdom: Not that he's dumb. But his logic and wisdom very uncomplicated and straightforward especially in regards to his Love Epiphany, pointing out how everyone keeps on displaying their affections for Serinuma in roundabout ways.
  • The Stoic: Though he has a clear heart of gold, he's also known for almost never losing his cool. Kazuma's presence is the first thing that seriously breaks Asuma's cool.
  • Tritagonist: It becomes more and more evident that Mutsumi is the last one of the main character trio, growing more and more important as the story advances and takes a more serious turn, focusing mainly on Kae, Igarashi and Mutsumi.
  • Tranquil Fury: The best way to describe Mutsumi's wrath would be a blizzard strong enough to literally freeze Hell over.

    Shima Nishina
Played by: Chinatsu Akasaki (drama CD, Japanese), Miyuki Sawashiro (anime, Japanese), Michelle Rojas (anime, English), Satsuki Nakayama (live-action film, Japanese)

A wealthy boyish-looking 1st-year who turns out to be just as much a hardcore otaku as Serinuma is. She's part of a doujin circle Kae loves, as well as being one of her favorite artists. In turn, Nishina adores Kae and throws her hat into the ring against the boys.

  • The Ace: Sports, smarts, arts... um... darts? It's probably easier to list the things Shima isn't good at. MMOs turn out to be one of them. That's what happens when ya rely on Microtransactions.
  • Ain't Too Proud to Beg: When Nishina has to get a doujin anthology for Kae's birthday (of her least favorite pairing, no less), she is forced to beg from an artist who mutually hates her and go through the hazing process. She does it all quickly, but grudgingly.
  • Bifauxnen: The first time we meet her is during a convention, where she very convincingly cosplays as a butler.
  • Big Ol' Eyebrows: Nishina has strong eyebrows, and they are accentuated to differentiate herself from others in her Super-Deformed form.
  • Birds of a Feather: Nishina and Serinuma are perfectly in sync thanks to their similar interests.
  • Boyish Short Hair: She keeps her hair short, which contributes to her boyish look.
  • Covert Pervert: When it comes to the boys being put in compromising positions, Nishina is all over it, and camera ready too.
  • Demoted to Extra: In the live-action film, Nishina's role is greatly diminished and she barely appears.
  • Even the Girls Want Her: Nishina also has quite her share of fangirls in the school.
  • First Kiss: Has it with Serinuma, though Serinuma thinks it doesn't count because Nishina's a girl.
  • Forgotten First Meeting: Nishina had previously met Serinuma at the start of the year, which inspired her to become a doujinshi artist, and again during a convention where Kae bought a copy of all of Nishina's circle's works. She tried finding Kae again, but by that time, Kae had lost her weight.
  • Gay Option: Nishina pines for Serinuma's affection as much as the boys do.
  • The Lad-ette: Nishina is an Action Girl when times call for it and is seen as One of the Guys, to the point where she's seen as being stronger, more durable, and cruder than Shinomiya.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: During a Ship-to-Ship Combat plot with Kae, when Nishina rubs her victory in Kae's face and Igarashi makes Nishina realize this whole thing may have cost their friendship. Thankfully it doesn't.
  • Ojou: Nishina is filthy stinking rich, living in a massive house with rooms dedicated to her otaku hobbies.
  • Sixth Ranger: Nishina is introduced several chapters into the story, when Junko wanted to add a new character to Kae's group.
  • Tertiary Sexual Characteristics: In her Super-Deformed form, Nishina can be identified with Big Ol' Eyebrows and eyelashes.
  • Tomboyish Voice: Nishina has a rather raspy voice, contributing to her boyish look.
  • Yaoi Fangirl: Nishina enjoys yaoi just as much as Kae.

Other Characters

    Amane "A-chan" Nakano
Played by: Asami Shimoda (Japanese), Whitney Rodgers (English), Miki Uehara (live-action film, Japanese)

Serinuma's best friend, and fellow otaku.

  • A-Cup Angst: In the first episode, she is rather jealous about Kae's chest size.
  • Affectionate Nickname: Serinuma addresses her as "A-chan".
  • Closet Geek: She hides her otaku hobbies from her boyfriend, believing that if he found out, they'd be over in an instant.
  • Genre Savvy: A-chan often remarks how Kae's life seems taken out of a manga or otome game.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: It isn't until Chapter 19 when her full name is revealed.
  • Satellite Character: Despite showing up on a more or less regular basis, she has little real impact on the plot.
  • Yaoi Fangirl: Being Serinuma's best friend, this is a given.

    Takurou Serinuma
Played by: Takahiro Mizushima (Japanese), Cris George (English), Shuto Miyazaki (live-action film, Japanese)

Kae's older brother. Unlike Kae, he's not an otaku, and often takes disdain for Kae's hobbies.

  • Big Brother Bully: Takurou often picks on Kae for being fat or being an otaku. At some point, he tries to crash a visit from the boys by exposing Kae's massive manga stash, but it ultimately fails since they already know by then.
  • My Sister Is Off-Limits: Despite his hostilities towards Kae, he was angered when Nanashima informed him, in an effort to get on his good side, that Matsumi was getting a little too forward with Kae.
  • Odd Friendship: Takurou is surprisingly very good friends with Nanashima.

    Mitsuko Serinuma
Played by: Yu Sugimoto (Japanese), Jessica Cavanagh (English), Naho Toda (live-action film, Japanese)

Kae's mother.

  • Generation Xerox: Apparently, Mitsuko was in a similar situation Kae's in when she was younger. Unlike Kae, Mitsuko enjoyed the attention.
  • I Was Quite a Looker: According to Kae's father, Kae looks like Mitsuko when she was younger.
  • Open-Minded Parent: She doesn't mind her daughter's eccentricities.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Pretty!Kae looks a lot like her mother when she was younger, enough that her father mistakes Kae for Mitsuko when he sees her for the first time in years.
  • Unwanted Harem: Inverted! Mitsuko was in a situation like Kae, but she apparently enjoyed the attention.

    Hideo Serinuma
Kae's father. He spends long amounts of time away from his family due to his work, but nonetheless loves his daughter.
  • Action Dad: Hideo works a job in the government of some kind, only saying that it involves "secrets of the state".
  • Boyfriend-Blocking Dad: He immediately takes displeasure at the attention Kae's getting from the boys.
  • Happily Married: Despite being away from his family due to work, he maintains a stable marriage.

    Kazuma Mutsumi
Voiced by: Yuichi Nakamura (Japanese), Ricco Fajardo (English)

Older brother of Mutsumi Asuma. Kazuma briefly works as a teacher for Kae's class. He's something of a serial charmer.

  • Ambiguously Bi: Kazuma shamelessly flirts with the boys as much as he does with other girls.
  • Big Brother Bully: Kazuma had once locked Asuma in a storeroom overnight over Asuma getting a model castle he wanted on Christmas, as children. He does it again when Asuma confronts him about monopolizing Kae to himself.
  • The Casanova: He has a history of flirting with other girls. It actually gets him into trouble at least once or twice.
  • Karma Houdini: Outside of being beaten in a card game he challenged Asuma to, Kazuma never really sees comeuppance for trapping Asuma in a locker.

    Takeru Mitsuboshi

A childhood friend of Kae. He moved away at some point prior to the story but returns as part of a tour, revealing that he's the voice actor of Akane of Katchu Ranbu, Kae's favorite character.

  • And Now You Must Marry Me: When Takeru goes on tour, he takes this chance to force Kae to come with him and marry him.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: His true character begins to show when Mutsumi pins down that he's been feigning stress sickness to keep Kae to himself, leading him to eventually kidnap Kae.
  • Childhood Friends: With Kae prior to the start of the story, the two were inseparable.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Takeru was forced to move away as a kid when his father fell into debt from a failed business venture. His father never recovered and passed away. He was also bullied.
  • Formerly Fat: Like Kae, Mitsuboshi was rather tubby as a child.
  • Hypocrite: When Takeru accuses Kae's friends of falling in love with her post-weight loss form without getting to know her, she points out that he's been obsessed with getting her to look like she did before losing weight out of being unable to let go of his past.
  • Knight of Cerebus: Things get a lot darker and serious once he enters the picture.
  • Living Emotional Crutch: Mitsuboshi feels this way towards Kae, becoming obsessed with keeping Kae near him.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: When Takeru pays a courtesy visit to Mutsumi, he is shocked to see him still unconscious and injured. He almost shuts down until Kae urges him to continue on with his tour.
  • Nice Character, Mean Actor: In-universe. Akane is noble and protects his master at his will. Takeru, on the other hand, claims to "protect" Kae from the others' less-than-noble intentions, kidnapping her against her will to force her to marry him.
  • Nom de Mom: Despite being with his father when his parents divorced, Takeru keeps his mother's maiden name over his fathers.
  • Sinister Silhouettes: Takeru has quite a creepy one.
  • Stalker with a Crush: Takeru had actually known where Kae was living and had asked his manager to keep tabs on her. He had planned to visit her eventually, had it not been for the two meeting at a Katchu Ranbu event.
  • Walking Spoiler: Hard to talk about Takeru or rather his true character, without spoiling anything.
  • Wounded Gazelle Gambit: He frequently feigns illness and weakness from stress in order to take advantage of Kae's good nature and keep her to himself.
  • Yandere: Drugging and kidnapping Kae, and sleeping with her (thankfully, it's literally just sleeping), and hiring thugs to prevent her friends from getting her does not paint a good picture of his psyche.

    Masaharu Akai
Akai is Takeru's manager and classmate.
  • The Atoner: Akai willingly puts up with Takeru because his father caused Takeru's father to go in debt, and he blames himself for it.
  • The Mole: When Takeru kidnaps Kae, Akai actively warns the others what he's doing and their current location.
    Yashiro
Mutsumi's close friend.

  • Incompatible Orientation: He's well and truly in love with Mutsumi, but his friend doesn't know or feel the same way.
  • Relationship Sabotage: Because he feels like Kae isn't a good match for Mutsumi, Yashiro sets up to break the couple apart by proving to the latter that his girlfriend is frivolous and selfish.
