The Heroes
Sora: The cheerful hero with ridiculous hair and even more ridiculous shoes.
Riku: Fangirl magnet and Sora's rival and best friend.
- Aloof Big Brother
- Anti Hero (When working with fellow Anti Hero DiZ.)
- The Atoner (From Chain of Memories Onward)
- Badass Decay (Through Chain of Memories up till the end of Kingdom Hearts II.)
- The Chosen One (Until he screwed it up)
- Cursed With Awesome plus Dark Is Not Evil (Chain of Memories onward)
- Deal With The Devil (Multiple, when he was a villain)
- Disability Superpower (He spent a considerable amount of time fighting completely blindfolded due to being Cursed With Awesome.)
- Face Heel Turn (You should know this already. You really should.)
- Jumped At The Call (Way too early, and it proved to be his downfall.)
- Laser Guided Karma (And how. Riku's bargain with Ansem for power in the first game proves to have devastating long-term consequences for him, both mentally and physically, even after reverting back to good at the end of KH 1.)
- Mamoru Miyano
- Meaningful Name (Riku means "Earth". Prequel character Terra also means "Earth". Though, it's unknown if there's a true connection there.)
- Mike Nelson Destroyer Of Worlds (Destiny Islands. Oops.)
- Mysterious Protector
- Redemption Demotion (On the side of evil, he was manipulated into being Maleficent's bitch. On the side of good, he willingly became Di Z's bitch.)
- Eh. Both times it was in order to try and save one of his friends; first Kairi, then Sora. Maleficent turned him against Sora, but he joined her willingly to save Kairi.
- Rival Turned Evil (He got over it.)
- The Unchosen One (Had to go through a lot to get a Keyblade again, and even then his obtaining of one wasn't very conventional; he somehow managed to transform his sword into one.)
- White Haired Pretty Boy
Kairi: The love interest, more or less (although Nomura said he didn't make any pairings canon on purpose.)
- The Chick (Serves as the emotional support/inspiration for both Sora and Riku.)
- Common Mary Sue Traits (Comes with being a Princess of Heart.)
- Die For Our Ship (dumb Fan Dumb is dumb.)
- Distressed Damsel
- The Heart (Hardy har.)
- Heroes Want Redheads
- The Ingenue
- Mac Guffin Girl
- Meaningful Name (Kai(ri) means "Sea". Nami(ne) means "Ocean Wave". And prequel character Aqua means "Water". What connection she has to Aqua is unknown, if any exists.)
- Not to mention the Japanese spelling of Xion. Shio(n) means "Tide".
- Plucky Girl (As Axel points out, the girl's got alot of guts.)
- The Scrappy (Usually linked to Die For Our Ship. Fan Dumb is dumb. Also, she's sometimes hated due to those aforementioned Common Mary Sue Traits, but Your Mileage May Vary on this, honestly.)
- Theme Naming (She, Sora, and Riku are "sea", "sky", and "land". She also shares ocean-themed naming with Naminé and Xion.)
- Took A Level In Badass ( Keyblader Kairi, ladies and gentlemen!)
Donald Duck: Sent by King Mickey to find the keyblade, he joins up with Sora to help him save the worlds. He is the court Wizard of Disney Castle.
Goofy: Same deal as Donald. He's the Captain of the Royal Guard of Disney Castle.
King Mickey Mouse: Oh come on, you know who this is. The King of Disney Castle, Mickey recognized the signs and left on a journey to get to the bottom of it. When he didn't come back, Donald and Goofy set off to find him. Although they meet a few times, Mickey is usually one step ahead of them and has a better idea of what's going on.
Oh yeah, and he's a Keyblade wielder and really, really badass.
Naminé: To Kairi what Roxas is to Sora.
Ven, Terra, and Aqua: Three Keyblade Knights and the main protagonists of the spin-off "Birth By Sleep."
The Supporting Cast
For the Final Fantasy characters, the same characterization tropes generally apply as in their original games.
Aerith: Is not dead.
Cloud: As angsty as ever, he first appears as a hired thug for Hades. He ends up returning to the rest of the Hollow Bastion gang at the end of the first game.
Leon: You may know him as Squall Leonhart. He renounced that name when the Radiant Garden was destroyed.
Tifa: Appears only a couple times, searching for Cloud.
Yuffie: She doesn't steal anything from you this time.
Auron: Is exactly as Bad Ass as he was in Final Fantasy X. He gets summoned by Hades in the Coliseum level in KH2 who attemts to order him to kill Sora. But he refuses and joins you instead.
Yuna, Rikku, and Paine: Appear as fairies for some reason. They originally were sent by Maleficent to spy on the heroes, but later switched sides. Rikku was supposed to appear in the first game ◊, but was replaced with Yuffie to avoid confusion with Riku.
Seifer: Roxas's rival in the prologue, but not really a villain otherwise. As always, Raijin and Fuujin (Rai and Fuu, here) follow him loyally.
Several Disney characters team up with Sora in his travels. Of course, the pages for their movies have more details.
Jiminy Cricket: He travels with Sora and co. to keep a record of their adventures.
Tarzan: Joins you in the first game's Deep Jungle.
Aladdin: Lends Sora and co. a hand in Agrabah in both games.
Ariel: While Atlantica is visitable in both games, we don't talk about the second.
Jack Skellington: Idol of Hot Topic goths everywhere, he joins you in Halloween Town in both games.
The Beast: The big furry Jerk With A Heart Of Gold teams up with you in the first game when you visit Hollow Bastion. Though you visit his castle in KH2, he doesn't fight alongside you there because he's too busy being manipulated by Xaldin. Unlike most of the guest stars, he's one of the more plot critical, assisting in bringing down Maleficient and Xaldin (and can even fight Xemnas in the first game's Final Mix edition.)
Merlin: The only non-Final Fantasy member of the Hollow Bastion Restoration Committee. His house is the group's base. He is also Sora's chief mentor in magic.
Fa Mulan: Sora and co. meet up with her right as she's about to join the army.
Minnie Mouse: Not a full party member, but kicks serious Heartless hiney when you have to lead her on an Escort Mission.
Jack Sparrow: Sadly, not actually voiced by Johnny Depp. Guess which world he shows up on.
Simba: He was a summon in the first game; when Sora visits the Pride Lands in KH2, he joins the party for real.
Tron: Seriously. Freaking TRON!
Hayner, Pence, and Ollette: Close friends of Roxas, they spend their days hanging out in Twilight Town, putting off homework, and eating ice cream.
It turns out that Roxas' friends are actually programs in Di Z's simulation, created to keep Roxas happy and distracted while he manipulated him. The trio does exist in the actual Twilight Town (apparently Di Z likes details that much) and they did interact with Roxas a few times in 358/2 Days.
Close The Supporting Cast
The Villains
Ansem Did I say "Ansem"? I meantXehanort: A respected scientist of the Radiant Garden, he became obsessed with The Heartless. His actions and the consequences of them are the driving force of the series. Was referred to as Ansem in the first game.
Maleficent
The Disney Villains A group of classic Disney Villains. In the first game, a group of them conspire under Maleficent's leadership. They are trying to use The Heartless for their own evil means.
Maleficent's original group includes Hades, Jafar, Ursula, Captain Hook, and Oogie Boogie. The second game also introduces Hector Barbossa, Shan-Yu, Scar, and the MCP, who aren't aligned with Maleficent, although she attempts to recruit/manipulate a couple.
There is also Pete.
- Alas Poor Villain (Clayton was technically controlled by the Heartless through his heart's obvious darkness, and Sora, Tarzan, and co. express pity after he's killed.)
- Back From The Dead (Most of them had to be resurrected after the first game.)
- BRIAN BLESSED (Clayton)
- Corey Burton (Hook, Sark, and the MCP.)
- Enemy Mine With Sora and co.
- Eviler Than Thou (They keep running into this. First with Xehanort, then with the Organization.)
- Ineffectual Sympathetic Villain (Pete)
- Jim Cummings (Pete)
- Large Ham (Pretty much all of them with the exception of the mostly silent Shan Yu.)
- Legion Of Doom
- Villain Decay (Their story in KH2 is all about them trying to regain their former glory.)
- Hades turned out to be pretty good at avoiding this, though. He goes from Bonus Boss to mandatory threat as the series progresses. And even then, he's never really beaten.
- Then again, he's the nigh immortal God of the Dead, he cannot be truly beaten unless....
- You Shall Not Pass Maleficent and Pete, much to their chagrin. We still don't know if they survived, but given Maleficen't big role in the series, and the fact that Pete's never really died in any Disney media, it's likely they did.
Master Xehanort: The main villain of Birth By Sleep. Most likely has something to do with the other Xehanort.
Sephiroth: The (in)famous Final Fantasy VII villain appears as a fiendishly hard optional boss in both Kingdom Hearts and Kingdom Hearts II. In the latter, there's a bit of a subplot with him and Cloud.
See also his Final Fantasy VII traits.
Riku Replica: Created by Vexen and used as a tool by Vexen, Marluxia and Larxene, and ultimately Axel. Once he finds out that his memories are a fake created by Naminé, he becomes determined to defeat the real Riku and become real himself. You can guess how well that ends.
Organization XIII
Organization XIII
A group of, yes, thirteen (temporarily fourteen) villains introduced in Chain of Memories and 358/2 Days. When someone with a strong heart is turned into a Heartless, the discarded body gets up with a life and will of its own as a Nobody. This group of particularly powerful Nobodies, who were able to retain human form on top of "existing" in the first place, seeks to regain their hearts at whatever cost.
While the Organization is a pretty varied group, the following tropes are universal throughout the Organization:
- Alternate Character Interpretation: Are they evil, or misunderstood? Can they feel emotions, or are they just really good actors?
- Badass Bookworm (Half of the gang were Mad Scientists before they got their Evil Makeover)
- Beta Test Baddie
- Black Cloak
- Blue Bishonen Ghetto
- Draco In Leather Pants (as a result of evil being sexy)
- Elemental Powers (Each Org. member controls an element)
- Eyes Of Gold (The more dangerous members have these)
- Ho Yay: Roxas/Axel. Crack Pairings have flanderized this a bit with the others.
- Let X Be The Unknown
- Love It Or Hate It (Organization XIII is a very divisive group of characters among fans.)
- Joke Weapon (All fourteen in 358/2's Mission Mode if they've equipped the Casual Gear; everyone but Roxas/Xion with the Mystery Gear.)
- Named Weapons
- Red Baron (All of the members except Xion have nicknames to this effect.)
- Significant Anagram: Their names are actually scrambled versions of their past names with an X added. However, not all of their past names are known, and Xemnas technically used someone else's name.
- Theme Naming: In Days, the variations on their weapons are all named after some sort of theme (Marluxia's are all flowers, Larxene's are all in French, Luxord's are mostly Tarot cards, et cetera.)
- Viewer Gender Confusion (Wait... there's only one girl? Which one!?)
- You Are Number Six (While it definitely indicates order of joining, its significance to actual rank is debatable. For example, nobody cares that Vexen is number four, but he waves it in everybody's faces, as they ignore his whining.)
- Also, Marluxia, who is pretty far down at number eleven, still gets to control half the Organization—which was retarded, since he got nearly all of them killed and tried to take over the Organization at the same time.
- To be fair, Axel's interference probably had a lot to do with that. They almost had Sora before Axel let Naminé go...
- Then there's Saïx, who is number seven but acts as Xemnas's number two, and the real number two, Xigbar, who is a bit of a jokester, especially after Flanderization.
Xemnas: The leader of Organization XIII, the Nobody of Xehanort, Ansem the Wise's first apprentice, and the Big Bad of Kingdom Hearts 2. He does not appear in Chain of Memories, but he is referred to by others as 'the Superior.'
Xigbar: Number II (though not apparently second-in-command), one of the founding members of the Organization. Although he acts like a surfer dude most of the time, he's actually one of the deadliest members of the group.
As a human, he was Braig, one of Ansem the Wise's six apprentices.
Xaldin Number III of the Organization and one of its founding members. He spends most of his time trying to corrupt the Beast for the Organization's purposes.
In his past life as Dilan, he was one of Ansem's six apprentices who betrayed him by researching the Heartless.
Vexen Number IV of the Organization and one of its founders. The group's resident scientist, he's always interested in new test subjects for his experiments.
Before he became a Nobody, he was Even, one of the six apprentices of Ansem the Wise who betrayed him by researching the Heartless and destroying the Radiant Garden.
Lexaeus Number V of the Organizatio and one of its founders. While he's content with standing aside and letting Zexion do the talking, he's a lot more intelligent and powerful then he seems.
In his past life as Aeleus, he was one of Ansem's treacherous apprentices.
Zexion Number VI in the Organization, and one of its founding members. In his previous life as Ienzo, he was the youngest of Ansem the Wise's apprentices.
During Chain of Memories, he tried to corrupt Riku so he could use him to counter Marluxia's coup.
Saïx: Number VII in the Organization. Second-in-command to Xemnas and responsible for overseeing every other members' missions. Underneath his stoic exterior is a raging berserker just waiting for Xemnas to cut him loose.
It's revealed later that he was once close friends with Axel. The two even planned to overthrow the Organization together, with Saïx becoming Xemnas' right hand to facilitate this plan. However, he lost sight of his goal and truly became Xemnas' ally, then turning on Axel.
Axel: Org XIII's 8th member. Spent Chain of Memories being awesome and then KH2 being... obsessed with a fifteen-year-old boy. Days reveals his Other's name to have been Lea.
Demyx Number IX of the Organization. While he is more capable then Sora is willing to give him credit for, he's laughably bad at being a villain and kind of a wimp.
Luxord Number X. He's suave, has a delicious British accent and he likes card games. He views life as a game and has all the time in the world to win it.
Marluxia Number XI, recruited by Xigbar and Xaldin. He is given charge of Castle Oblivion and attempts to engineer a coup against Xemnas with the help of Larxene and the presumed help of Axel.
Larxene Number XII of the Organization and close ally of Marluxia. Gleefully sadistic, she enjoys tormenting others for the fun of it.
Roxas: Number 13 in the above. Think he's critical to the plot? A mysterious Nobody able to wield the Keyblade, he defected when he realized that the Organization (sans Axel, though at the time Roxas doubted even that) cared nothing for him.
He's also Sora's Nobody.
Xion The 14th member of the Organization, introduced in 358/2 Days.
- Anti Villain
- Alas Poor Villain
- Axe Crazy Once she snaps and you have to fight her, her combat style can best be described as reminiscent of Zant from The Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess. What's worse is that she has access to alot of weapons; one of which you even set up for her at Agrabah a few missions back!
- Beta Test Baddie
- Break The Cutie (Xemnas, you bastard...)
- Cloning Blues
- Common Mary Sue Traits (From a character description, one would think Xion is a Mary Sue straight from a bad fanfic. Thankfully, as you can see below, this isn't the case.)
- Copy Cat Sue ( Deconstructed in the worst way imaginable for the poor girl.)
- Die For Our Ship - Is it not bad enough that she actually DOES die?
- Dying As Yourself: Xion transforms into some kind of creature when you battle her, but returns to normal as she dies.
- Gender Bender ( Overheard on Fandom Secrets: "So does that make her a futa?")
- Go Mad From The Revelation Twice-subverted. She initially resists such a proposition despite the pain she feels, until Xemnas interferes in an attempt to force her to absorb Roxas. Not that he actually succeeded - she's only feigning insanity because she needed Roxas to destroy her artificial body so she could return to Sora, where she (quite lucidly) decided that she belonged.
- Light Is Not Good
- The Load: She's a fairly weak fighter and has to be supported alot on missions. However it turns out this is intentional, as Xion is designed to grow stronger through absorbing memories of Sora from Roxas, which in turn makes Roxas weaker.
- The Mario (358/2 Days. Her only differences from Roxas are that she can't dual-wield, and she takes less damage from her boss form's attacks.)
- Meaningful Name: She's named after a flower (shion) that symbolizes remembrance.
- Opposite Sex Clone (Of Sora/Roxas. She started off genderless and was supposed to become male due to absorbing Sora's memories through Roxas. However, Xion wound up absorbing Sora's memories of Kairi and became female as a result.)
- Rescued From The Scrappy Heap (One of the most universally hated characters by the fandom before her game was even released. Then they found out her story...)
- Sadly, this trope isn't applying that much to the Axel/Roxas fanbase...
- Ret Gone (Only Xion knows that she herself existed. She stays happy with memories of friendship with Axel and Roxas.)
- Significant Anagram ("No.i")
- Split Personality Merge With Roxas, and later Sora by extension.
- Theme Naming (Her part in the "girls related to Kairi" group is shio for tide.)
- Woobie Destroyer Of Worlds
Other
DiZ Ansem The Wise An enigmatic figure who aids Riku and Naminé. A man working against the Organization, he is willing to use rather questionable means to meet his goals. It turns out that he's actually Ansem the Wise, the teacher of Xehanort, trying to atone for the atrocities done by Xehanort and Xemnas in his name, and for the aforementioned questionable actions he committed in the process. Oh, and he's voiced by Christopher Lee.
