The Heroes
Sora
"I don't need a weapon! My friends are my power!"
The cheerful hero with ridiculous hair and even more ridiculous shoes.
- Achilles Heel: Disarming Sora of his Keyblade leaves him mostly powerless. Though Sora seems to have wised up to this weakness in II and has learned to work around it.
- Anime Hair: Sweet Mother. His hair keeps its shape underwater.
- Back From The Dead: Killed himself in order to save Kairi. He turned into a Heartless, but was turned back to a seemingly normal form shortly afterward. This requires multiple sequels to explain the repercussions of.
- Celebrity Voice Actor: In English, he can see dead people.
- Charles Atlas Superpower
- The Chosen One
- Common Mary Sue Traits: Just try to deny that he doesn't sound like a Nomura self-insert in a Disney crossover fanfic.
- Cute Little Fangs: When in Halloween Town.
- Cute Shotaro Boy
- Cutlass Between The Teeth: Wields the Keyblade like this when in the Pride Lands.
- Cutscene Incompetence: He can mow down 1000 Heartless with ease, but you'd never know it watching some of the scenes.
- Cutscene Power To The Max: Kingdom Hearts II takes this Beyond The Impossible. The triangle button goes from being a vestigial button used only for magic shortcuts to being the button you use to jump hundreds of feet, teleport to deflect arrows by kicking them (via Flash Step), and throw skyscrapers at dragons. Of course, you don't actually have control over any of this beyond initiating the cutscene.
- Dual Wielding: Figures out how to do this during Kingdom Hearts II.
Roxas Xion probably helped.
- Roxas can help even more; during his battle you can steal his Keyblades. i.e., Triple Wielding.
- Fingerless Gloves
- Fixer Sue: Your Mileage May Vary, but after the ending of Coded and the secret ending of Birth by Sleep, there are some who believe he is becoming this.
- Friendship Freak
- The Hero
- Heroic Sacrifice
- Improbable Weapon User
- Kid Hero
- Meaningful Name: Sora means "Sky". Prequel character Ventus has a name meaning "Wind" (connection unknown, if any exists. The fact he looks like Roxas doesn't help). To say nothing of the recurring line "There are many worlds, but they all share the same sky."
- The Messiah: Seriously. Name a person he doesn't like that's not a bad guy.
- As of Birth by Sleep, this trope now applies quite literally to him.
- Mind Hive: Both his drive system and Roxas, Xion, and Ven inside of him.
- Miyu Irino
- Ron The Death Eater: On account of killing members of Organization XIII.
- Spanner In The Works: In both games, Sora ends up derailing every single plan involving him. In KH2, DiZ even makes note of how all plans he had for Sora fell apart once Sora got awakened.
- The Power Of Friendship: His mantra.
- Took A Level In Badass: After remerging with Roxas.
- The Unchosen One: He was not the first choice for the Keyblade Master.
Riku
"Once we step through, we might not be able to come back. We may never see our parents again. There's no turning back. But this may be our only chance. We can't let fear stop us! I'm not afraid of the darkness!"
Fangirl magnet and Sora's rival and best friend.
- Aloof Big Brother
- Anti Hero: When working with fellow Anti Hero DiZ.
- Anti Villain: When working with Maleficent, until he Took A Level In Jerk Ass and pretty much lost himself in darkness.
- The Atoner: From Chain of Memories onward.
- Badass Decay: Through Chain of Memories up till the end of Kingdom Hearts II.
- Base Breaker: He can be quite controversial, particularly as to how much the aforementioned Badass Decay trope hurts his overall Character Development.
- Celebrity Voice Actor: David Gallagher, who you probably remember as Simon from Seventh Heaven.
- The Chosen One: Until he screwed it up.
- Cursed With Awesome & Dark Is Not Evil: Chain of Memories onward.
- Cute Shotaro Boy
- Deal With The Devil: Multiple, when he was a villain.
- Disability Superpower: He spent a considerable amount of time fighting completely blindfolded due to being Cursed With Awesome.
- Draco In Leather Pants: Fangirls love to make excuses for his actions in the first game, which is Completely Missing The Point of his later character progression.
- Expy: Riku is The Lancer to his best bud Sora. Riku competed with him in everything due to being envious of Sora's personality as well as a slight Love Triangle between the two and Kairi. He becomes a Rival Turned Evil, but eventually recovers. He then spends his time throughout the sequels as The Atoner. Realizing his flaws and confronting Ansem, Riku finally accepts his inner darkness and grows stronger from it. Sounds a lot like Kain, eh?
- Face Heel Turn: You Should Know This Already. You really should.
- Flash Step: It becomes Teleport Spam when he's a villain though.
- Jumped At The Call: Way too early, and it proved to be his downfall.
- The Lancer: Becomes one at the climax of II.
- Laser Guided Karma: And how. Riku's bargain with Ansem for power in the first game proves to have devastating long-term consequences for him, both mentally and physically, even after reverting back to good at the end of the first game.
- Mamoru Miyano
- Meaningful Name: Riku means "Earth". Prequel character Terra also means "Earth". Though, it's unknown if there's a true connection there.
- Mike Nelson Destroyer Of Worlds: Destiny Islands. Oops.
- Mysterious Protector
- Redemption Demotion: On the side of evil, he was manipulated into being Maleficent's bitch. On the side of good, he willingly became DiZ's bitch.
- Eh. Both times it was in order to try and save one of his friends; first Kairi, then Sora. Maleficent turned him against Sora, but he joined her willingly to save Kairi.
- Refused By The Call: Thanks to the aforementioned jumping too early.
- Rival Turned Evil: You Should Know This Already. He got over it.
- That One Boss: While possessed by Ansem. His clone takes up the "ARGH WHY DO YOU KEEP KILLING ME" mantle later on.
- The Unchosen One: Had to go through a lot to get a Keyblade again, and even then his obtaining of one wasn't very conventional; he somehow managed to transform his sword into one.
- He could already summon Soul Eater much like a Keyblade. Maybe the potential to be one was there all along; he just couldn't summon a full Keyblade (his time as Ansem-Riku notwithstanding) until he'd redeemed himself.
- Took A Level In Badass: After finally ending his period of Badass Decay, Riku gets a Keyblade and becomes a party member at the end of Kingdom Hearts II.
- Took A Level In Jerkass: In the original Kingdom Hearts, until the Laser Guided Karma he receives brings him back to his senses.
- White Haired Pretty Boy
Kairi
"Don't ever forget. Wherever you go, I'm always with you."
The love interest, more or less (although Nomura said he doesn't care for making any pairing 100% canon for some reason or other.)
- The Chick: Serves as the emotional support and inspiration for both Sora and Riku.
- Common Mary Sue Traits: Comes with being a Princess of Heart.
- Die For Our Ship: Dumb Fan Dumb is dumb.
- Distressed Damsel: Subverted in the the first game, where her heart is actually inside Sora's body all along. Played straight when she's kidnapped by Saïx in Kingdom Hearts II.
- The Heart: Hardy har.
- Heroes Want Redheads
- Incorruptible Pure Pureness, by definition.
- The Ingenue
- Mac Guffin Girl
- Meaningful Name: Kai(ri) means "Sea". Nami(ne) means "Ocean Wave". And prequel character Aqua means "Water". What connection she has to Aqua is unknown, if any exists.
- Not to mention the Japanese spelling of Xion. Shio(n) means "Tide".
- Plucky Girl: As Axel points out, the girl's got a lot of guts.
- Real Women Never Wear Dresses: Poor Kairi gets this a lot, with bashers claiming that because she doesn't fight outside of a rookie level of combat, at least, she's useless.
- Ron The Death Eater: She's a very kind person and good friends with Sora and Riku. Naturally, the fangirls view her as a bitch ("OMG, SHE HATES RIKU AND WANTS TO KEEP SORA AWAY FROM HIM!").
- The Scrappy: Usually linked to Die For Our Ship. Fan Dumb IS dumb. Also, she's sometimes hated due to those aforementioned Common Mary Sue Traits, but Your Mileage May Vary on this, honestly.
- Theme Naming: She, Sora, and Riku are "sea", "sky", and "land". She also shares ocean-themed naming with Naminé and Xion.
- The Other Darrin: Hayden Panettiere voiced Kairi in the first two games, but was replaced by Alyson Stoner in Re:CoM presumably to retain a younger voice for Kairi. In Days, this led to Flashback With The Other Darrin.
- Took A Level In Badass: Keyblader Kairi, ladies and gentlemen! And even without that, she's much more athletically capable than before, escaping Axel twice and jumping off balconies with no problem.
Donald Duck
"Aw phooey, what do you know you big palooka...?"
Sent by King Mickey to find the Keyblade, he joins up with Sora to help him save the worlds. He is the court Wizard of Disney Castle.
Goofy
"I'm not going to betray Sora, either!"
Same deal as Donald. He's the Captain of the Royal Guard of Disney Castle.
" Keyblade's aren't for hurting people! I'll be your opponent!"
Oh come on, you know who this is. The King of Disney Castle, Mickey recognized the signs and left on a journey to get to the bottom of it. When he didn't come back, Donald and Goofy set off to find him. Although they meet a few times, Mickey is usually one step ahead of them and has a better idea of what's going on.
Oh yeah, and he's a Keyblade wielder and really, really badass.
Naminé
"Roxas! We will meet again. And then we can talk about everything. I may not know it's you, and you may not know it's me. But we will meet again. Someday soon. I promise!"
To Kairi what Roxas is to Sora (complete with blond hair!)
- Common Mary Sue Traits: Unfortunately for her and everyone else.
- Demoted To Extra: She was one of the most pivotal characters in Chain of Memories, but in Kingdom Hearts II, she was generally less important than any of the other original characters except for Roxas' Three Amigos.
- Distressed Damsel: Poor Naminé was literally born into this role. She gets out of it once Chain of Memories is through.
- Expy: A quiet, mysterious girl with incredible powers, designed by Tetsuya Nomura... huh? You aren't talking about Ellone?
- Fake Memories: What her powers revolve around.
- Heel Face Turn: Not that she was ever evil though.
- The Ingenue
- Miss Exposition: To Roxas in Kingdom Hearts II.
- Mysterious Waif: In Chain of Memories.
- Real Women Never Wear Dresses: *Sigh*... Once again...
- Relationship Sue: You know, the kind that appears out of nowhere and supplants the love interest for a character? As it would turn out, Marluxia is having her play this specific role so that Sora can be brainwashed into becoming his slave.
- Remember The New Girl: Or so it seems...
- Rewriting Reality: Uses drawing to manipulate memories.
- The Scrappy: Usually for the same reasons as Kairi, naturally enough. (Or for people who hate Chain of Memories and take it out on her.)
- Shrinking Violet: For the most part in Chain of Memories until she gains some confidence at the end.
- Theme Naming: Her part in the "girls related to Kairi" group is nami for wave.
- The Other Darrin: Brittany Snow was replaced by Meaghan Jette Martin in Re:Chain of Memories.
- Took A Level In Badass: She gains a lot more confidence in Kingdom Hearts II, evaded capture from the Organization, and helped rescue Kairi. She and Kairi together even stood up to Saïx physically, and that's gotta count for something.
- Woman In White
- The Woobie: Mainly in Chain of Memories, in which she is the Organization's total slave.
Ventus (Ven)
"You don’t understand! Because of my friends, because I have people I want to protect I can become stronger. And our connected hearts are my power!"
A rookie Keyblade Knight, one of the three protagonists of Birth By Sleep. By the end of the game he's put in a coma, and is currently recovering in a hidden room of Castle Oblivion. Sora is currently holding onto his heart.
Aqua
"My name is Master Aqua. And you will return my friend's heart!"
Another member of the Birth By Sleep trio and the only one of them who was qualified to advance to the rank of Master. While she's the only one of the trio who really comes out alive, she's forced to wander the realm of darkness for over a decade and is indirectly responsible for a lot of bad stuff that went down.
- Action Girl: Appears to be primarily a magic user, but just as capable as the guys physically. There's a reason she's the one with the Master rank after all.
- Badass Adorable
- Back To Back Badasses: Subverted when she tells Zack to sit on the sidelines before her battle with Hades and the Ice Titan. Later played straight in an awesome fashion when she teams up with fellow Memetic Badass Mickey to fend off a Vanitas-possessed Ven.
- Berserk Button: Do not say or do anything bad to or about her friends. Vanitas, Braig, and Xehanort learned this the hard way.
- Closer To Earth: She is the only one of the trio who qualifies to become a Keyblade Master. (Ven's too inexperienced to apply, and Terra has too much darkness in him. Though in Terra's defense, he was sabotaged.)
- Cute Bruiser: She's beautiful, but could kick anyone's ass if she so chose. Terranort found this out the hard way.
- Fetish Fuel Station Attendant: She has a whole paragraph on the series' Fetish Fuel page.
- Friendship Freak: Nearly as much as Sora.
- Hot Chick With A Keyblade
- Hartman Hips: Her armor.
- Iron Woobie
- Male Gaze: Pay close attention to where Hades's eyes briefly wander. Yeah...
- Meaningful Name: As detailed above for Kairi, Aqua continues the "water/sea" theme though she's not related to her.
- Megumi Toyoguchi
- Memetic Badass: Already becoming one. Extra points for teaming up with Mickey.
- Nice Job Breaking It Hero
- Real Women Never Wear Dresses: Poor Aqua's recently become the Fan Dumb's weapon of choice for this trope, with Kairi, Naminé, and Xion being put down because they don't measure up to Aqua's Action Girl status.
- Senseless Sacrifice: She gives up her armor and her Keyblade to save Terra. While she turned out fine, she has to spend the next decade stuck in a hostile world at a serious disadvantage and saving Terra turns out to set most of Xehanort's evil deeds in motion.
- Sexy Back: To the point where it had to be toned down... not that it changed much.
- She Fu
- Spanner In The Works: She ruins Xenahort's plans by not dying when he expected her to.
- Team Mom: To her friends and to Peter Pan and the lost boys.
Terra
"I don't care if you're a master, I will use this power to protect my friends!"
The third part of said trio, voted Most Likely To Become A Villain in his high school yearbook. In his drive to become a Keyblade Master, he began seeking out Master Xehanort. While he eventually wised up, he was possessed by Master Xehanort and is currently the vessel for the series' main Big Bad.
- Animated Armor
- Anti Hero
- Badass Cape: As the Lingering Sentiment. Sadly, it had to be removed for gameplay in Birth by Sleep due to programming difficulties.
- BFK: Big Freakin' Key.
- Biggest out of any of the normal "canon" Keyblades.
- Big Brother Instinct
- Knight Templar Big Brother: This develops by the end of the game in regards to everyone seeming to want to end Ven's existance, wether they were good people or bad people.
- Bonus Boss: As the Lingering Sentiment in Final Mix+.
- Decoy Protagonist: Despite being the centerfold of much of the pre-release promotion of Birth By Sleep, it's actually Aqua who plays the most pivotal role.
- Demonic Possession
- Eyes Of Gold: At the end of II's secret ending.
- Fighting From The Inside: He's not too successful, but it's there.
- Heroic Willpower: Probably the most out of anyone in the series.
- Horrible Judge Of Character
- Jerkass Woobie: He's always sympathetic, but not all that endearing toward the start.
- Iron Woobie: Once he gets over his above-mentioned character flaws, he's definitely this.
- Laser Guided Karma: Much like Riku, he gave into the darkness. Although Terra's consequences in comparison were much worse.
- Meaningful Name: Shares the "earth" theme with Riku.
- Took A Level In Badass: Through accepting his heart's darkness, but like Riku, it has it's costs.
- Not only did he defeat Master Xehanort, when Xehanort stole his body at the conclusion of the fight he animated his armor out of force of will and defeated him again!
- Ryotaro Okiayu
- Tragic Hero
- Xanatos Sucker
The Supporting Cast
Original Characters
Hayner, Pence, and Olette
Close friends of Roxas, they spend their days hanging out in Twilight Town, putting off homework, and eating ice cream.
It turns out that Roxas' friends are actually programs in Di Z's simulation, created to keep Roxas happy and distracted while he manipulated him. The trio does exist in the actual Twilight Town (apparently DiZ likes details that much) and they did interact with Roxas a few times in 358/2 Days.
DiZ, also known as Ansem the Wise
"I'm afraid that any world you try to create... Any world of yours... would be an empire of ignorance. That is why you and your creation are destined to fall!"
An enigmatic figure who aids Riku and Naminé. A man working against the Organization, he is willing to use rather questionable means to meet his goals. It turns out that he's actually Ansem the Wise, the teacher of Xehanort, trying to atone for the atrocities done by Xehanort and Xemnas in his name, and for the aforementioned questionable actions he committed in the process. Oh, and he's voiced by Christopher Lee.
- Anti Hero: Everything he does is to aid the cause of good, but his obsessive desire for revenge causes him to take several less than heroic actions in doing so, which many others suffer for.
- The Atoner: Once he realizes the above.
- Clear My Name: His motivation.
- The Chessmaster
- Christopher Lee: WTH Casting Agency indeed.
- It has been suggested that he took the job because his character gets to talk to a badass Mickey Mouse. And, let's face it, if that happened to your character, wouldn't you do this job?
- Cool Old Guy
- Disney Death: The ending of Birth by Sleep shows that he survived his sacrifice and now waits for Sora to free him and Aqua from the Realm of Darkness.
- The Dumbledore: Not nearly as much these days, but he's still got a couple quirks.
- Evil Sounds Deep: Subverted. He has the world's greatest villain's voice, but he's actually an Anti Hero.
- Eyes Of Gold
- Fun With Acronyms: Darkness in Zero.
- Gadgeteer Genius
- Good Is Not Nice
- Hes Just Hiding: More like stranded in the realm of darkness.
- Jerkass: Regarding Roxas, though he does apologize for it in the end, shortly before his Heroic Sacrifice.
- Jerkass Woobie: The guy's been betrayed by the people who cared for most, trapped in the realm of nothingness for years, and in order to atone for the dark actions he took for revenge, seals himself into the realm of darkness for ANOTHER lonely banishment period. He's had it rough.
- Kick The Dog: His manipulation of Roxas and ordering the execution of Naminé.
- Legacy Character
- Mask Power
- Red Right Hand
- Ron The Death Eater: Granted, DiZ was a revenge-driven asshole but he had reasons for it (he was in the darkness for so long) and he genuinely atoned for it in the end with a Heroic Sacrifice. Yet much of the Fan Dumb still see him as an irredeemable racist monster who is more evil than the guy who stole his name!.
- Redemption Equals Death
- Or not, considering the secret ending to Birth by Sleep.
- Shut Up Hannibal: The above quote is a response to Xemnas's motive rant.
- Stealth Mentor: To Riku.
- The Other Darrin: Christopher Lee couldn't reprise his role for Re:Chain of Memories, so Corey Burton was called in to do a convincing voice-match. Lee returns to voice DiZ again in Days.
- Trademark Favorite Food: Sea-salt ice cream.
Master Eraqus:
“The X-Blade is something that should not exist in this world. Knowing what Xehanort has planned, I have no choice but to seal you away. Forgive me, Ven. You should not exist!”
Aqua, Terra and Ven's teacher.
Final Fantasy Characters
For the Final Fantasy characters, the same characterization tropes generally apply as in their original games.
Aerith
"No matter how far away we are, our hearts will bring us together again."
She is not dead.
Cloud
"I’m looking for someone. Hades promised to help. I tried to exploit the power of darkness, but it backfired. I fell into darkness, and couldn’t find the light."
Cloud's appearing in something that isn't Final Fantasy VII. Which, of course, means that all his Character Development is gone and he's all angsty again. He first appears as a hired thug for Hades. He ends up returning to the rest of the Hollow Bastion gang at the end of the first game.
Leon
"We may never meet again, but we'll never forget each other."
You may know him as Squall Leonhart. He renounced that name when the Radiant Garden was destroyed.
Tifa
"Cloud you can have my light."
Appears only a couple times, searching for Cloud.
Yuffie
"I see you all are still in top form!"
She doesn't steal anything from you this time.
Auron
"This is my story. And you're not a part of it."
He is exactly as Bad Ass as he was in Final Fantasy X. He gets summoned by Hades in the Coliseum level in KH2 who attempts to order him to kill Sora. But he refuses and joins you instead.
- Badass: Heh, it wouldn't be Auron if he isn't badass.
- Like A Badass Out Of Hades: Literally! Auron verbally subverts a type 2 situation (getting a job) and then fights his way out. Done like a pro.
- Badass Longcoat
- Memetic Badass: Carries over from the source material, but it's easy to see why. When Hades said that he was going to summon the "the mother of all bad guys", many a fan intentionally misheard it as "the mother of all Badasses".
- Back From The Dead: Well, kind of.
- Brainwashed: Hades forces Auron into servitude by stealing Auron's willpower and imprisioning it into a statue of his likeness. Auron is then made to fight Hercules in a deathmatch. Luckily, Sora & co. save the day, and Hades gets utterly screwed.
- Deadpan Snarker: "No wonder no one wants to die."
- Did You Just Flip Off Cthulhu: Does this to Hades.
- Epileptic Trees: Many have been inclined to believe that this Auron is not an Alternate Universe version, but THE Auron from X thanks to the fact that the words heard when Sora obtains the Auron statue are his quotes from his pilgrimmage with Braska and Jecht. A joint theory goes on to say that Auron wound up in the KH universe after his death at the hands of Yunalesca in X. After dispersing into pyreflies at the end of the game, he goes on to Dream Zanarkand, effectively setting Final Fantasy X into motion. Said theory is used to explain why Auron has his youthful appearance as seen in flashbacks.
- Good Scars Evil Scars: Still has that scar over his (missing) eye.
- Hideo Ishikawa
- Katanas Are Just Better: Huge katanas, that is.
- Pre Ass Kicking One Liner: "No wonder no one wants to die," he said to Hades when he was bragging about being the "Lord of the Dead". No one could hope for a more badass intro.
- Tall Dark And Snarky: It's Auron.
- The Stoic
- You Shall Not Pass: Does this to Cereberus. Subverted when Sora returns and the two decimate the Hellhound in a Back To Back Badasses moment.
Yuna, Rikku, and Paine
Appear as fairies for some reason. They originally were sent by Maleficent to spy on the heroes, but later switched sides. Rikku was supposed to appear in the first game ◊, but was replaced with Yuffie to avoid confusion with Riku. She's still not referred to by name, for the same reason.
Seifer
"I don't feel like cooperating with destiny."
Roxas's rival in the prologue, but not really a villain otherwise. As always, Raijin and Fuujin (Rai and Fuu, here) follow him loyally.
Disney Characters
Several Disney characters team up with Sora in his travels. Of course, the pages for their movies have more details.
Jiminy Cricket
He travels with Sora and co. to keep a record of their adventures.
- Mr Exposition: Provides it with his Journal.
- What An Idiot: All he writes in his Journal at the end of Chain of Memories is "Thank Naminé." with no explanation whatsoever. Cue the mass confusion for Sora & co. at the beginning of II and a massive Wall Banger for fans.
Tarzan
"Friends, same heart. Clayton, lose heart. No heart, no see friends. No heart, no friends."
Joins you in the first game's Deep Jungle.
Aladdin Lends Sora and co. a hand in Agrabah in both games.
Ariel While Atlantica is visitable in both games, we don't talk about the second.
Jack Skellington
"Sally why didn't I listen to you?"
Idol of Hot Topic goths everywhere, he joins you in Halloween Town in both games.
- Black Magic: His official job class is Black Mage.
- Ugly Cute: He's supposed to be the most scariest looking monster in his world. The "common people" of his world probably have never seen a heatless or a Nobody.
Peter Pan
The boy who would not grow up. party member in the original, summon in the second.
The Beast
The big furry Jerk With A Heart Of Gold teams up with you in the first game when you visit Hollow Bastion. Though you visit his castle in KH2, he doesn't fight alongside you there because he's too busy being manipulated by Xaldin. Unlike most of the guest stars, he's one of the more plot critical, assisting in bringing down Maleficient and Xaldin (and can even fight Xemnas in the first game's Final Mix edition.)
Merlin
"Took your time, didn't you?"
The only non- Final Fantasy member of the Hollow Bastion Restoration Committee. His house is the group's base. He is also Sora's chief mentor in magic.
Fa Mulan
Sora and co. meet up with her right as she's about to join the army.
Minnie Mouse
"We hope for your safe return."
Not a full party member, but kicks serious Heartless hiney when you have to lead her on an Escort Mission.
Jack Sparrow
"When you sailed away in my ship and marooned me on that godforsaken spit of land with naught but a pistol and a single shot, you forgot one very important thing, mate. I'm Captain Jack Sparrow."
Sadly, not actually voiced by Johnny Depp. Guess which world he shows up on.
Simba
"I'm lucky to have friends who will stand by my side, my father wasn't so lucky, he always had Scar lurking behind his back always trying to cut him down."
He was a summon in the first game; when Sora visits the Pride Lands in KH2, he joins the party for real.
- Bad Ass Angster: Moreso angst than badass at first in II, but when he finally gets over his personal doubts... hoo boy!
- Cam Clarke
- Royals Who Actually Do Something: Of course, he needed Sora, Donald and Goofy's support to do something about Scar's ghost.
- Took A Level In Badass: When his friends helped him overcome his fears and inferiority feelings regarding his father, he chasted Scar's ghost away by telling it to fuck off and some seconds later fought off the true Heartless version of Scar by his claws and fangs alone.
Tron
Seriously. Freaking TRON!
- Badass Bookworm: Mostly because he's a computer program, programmed to know about computers but still. He is also programmed to kick some serious heartless asses, which forced MCP to delete his programming before he was locked up.
- Cue Cullen: As noted above.
- Tron Lines: Duh.
The Villains
Major Villains
Ansem Did I say "Ansem"? I meant Xehanort
"So, you have come this far, and still you understand nothing. Every light must fade, every heart return to darkness!"
A respected scientist of the Radiant Garden, he became obsessed with The Heartless. His actions and the consequences of them are the driving force of the series. Was referred to as Ansem in the first game. He is really Master Xehanort after possessing Terra's body
- Akio Ohtsuka
- As Long As There Is Evil: Besides the fact that he's a Heartless now, he's still alive, sort of, inside Riku, and claims that he can't be destroyed because of Riku's darkness.
- Big Bad
- The Chessmaster: Masterminded the entire plot of the first game.
- Dark Skinned Blond
- Deceptive Disciple: He took the name of Ansem from his former teacher.
- Demonic Possession
- Eldritch Abomination: Being a Heartless and all.
- Evil Mentor: To Riku.
- Evilutionary Biologist: His experiments on the The Heartless helped turn them into the army of darkness they are today.
- Evil Sorcerer
- Eyes Of Gold
- Familiar: "Come, Guardian!"
- Turns out that Terranort has the exact same Guardian as Ansem, Seeker of Darkness.
- Feed Me: There's a reason this guy is pictured on the page for Large Hams.
- Hoist By His Own Petard: Kingdom Hearts, the ultimate darkness he was searching for, turns out to be light, and ends up doing him in.
- Large Ham
Ansem: "SUBMIT!"
- Laser Guided Amnesia: Part of his backstory.
- Legacy Character: He's not the first Ansem, and Birth by Sleep hints he's not the first Xehanort either.
- As it turns out, he's the same Xehanort, only in Terra's body.
- Mad Scientist
- The Man Behind The Man
- Memetic Mutation: "DARKNESS!"
- Mysterious Past: Explained in Birth by Sleep.
- Nietzsche Wannabe
- Omnicidal Maniac
- One Steve Limit: A rather complicated aversion.
- Only Mostly Dead: Even after being destroyed by Kingdom Hearts, a small piece of himself is still alive in Riku. If Riku ever lets his guard down, Xehanort can regenerate and take over his body.
- The Other Darrin: Billy Zane in the first game, unfortunately replaced with Richard Epcar from Kingdom Hearts II onward.
- Sequential Boss
- Significant Anagram: "No heart" or "Another" through the same system as the Organization's anagrams.
- Start Of Darkness: Birth by Sleep.
- White Haired Pretty Boy
Maleficent
"What in the world do you think you're prattling on about? Kingdom Hearts belongs to me! The Heart of all Kingdoms! The Heart of all that lives! A dominion fit to be called Kingdom Hearts must be my dominion!"
Pete
"Just wait! Nobody, and I do mean nobody, messes with The Mighty Pete!"
There is also Pete.
Master Xehanort
"I believed you'd find your way by now. Cross the wall between light and darkness. Back to me. I'm tired of waiting for you, Terra!"
A fallen Keyblade Master and the main villain of Birth by Sleep. Most likely has something to do with the other Xehanort. Because he is him, only in Terra's body and having lost his memory.
- Badass Grandpa: Just watch the teaser. Disney, what does this guy eat?
- Bald Of Evil
- Beard Of Evil
- Big Bad: Of Birth By Sleep and the rest of the series, more or less.
- Chikao Ohtsuka
- Complete Monster: When you take into account everything that happened in the series. He's basically the cause of all suffering of all main characters, bar the stuff done by Disney villains. And even then, he's still the cause of the mass outbreak of Heartless, the creatures used by the Disney villains. So indirectly, he's even responsible for that.
- Evil Mentor
- Eyes Of Gold
- Fallen Hero
- Grand Theft Me: Pulls this on Terra, resulting in the present-day Xehanort.
- Large Ham: Makes sense, seeing as he's basically the past incarnation of Ansem, Seeker of Darkness.
- Legacy Character
- Obviously Evil: Not to mention psychotic.
- One Steve Limit: Averted. How many Xehanorts are there?
- At least one for every Ansem.
- Well Intentioned Extremist: According to his backstory, he started out this way, wishing to keep balance between light and darkness in the universe. But the darkness he delved in took it's toll on his heart and mind, making him the Complete Monster seen in-game.
- Would Hit A Girl: More like Would Choke A Girl While Possessing Her Best Friend's Body.
Vanitas
"That’s right, I'm not Ventus. I took his heart. With this X-Blade I'll open the door and connect all the worlds, and hearts of light shall seek Kingdom Hearts. Keyblade holders from all the worlds will gather here and the legendary Keyblade Wars will return!"
The mysterious masked apprentice of Master Xehanort. To keep up the parallels, his outfit is nearly identical to the Ansem-possessed Riku and frequently antagonizes Ven. He's actually an artificial being created from the darkness in Ven's heart.
- Anime Hair: Exactly as ridiculous as Sora's. Just black.
- Artificial Human
- Ax Crazy, except with a Keyblade.
- Battle In The Center Of The Mind: With Ventus.
- Bastard Understudy
- Complete Monster: Somewhat excusable, since he's literally nothing but darkness.
- Draco In Leather Pants: Again, he's pure darkness, so it's impossible for him to have redeeming qualities, but this doesn't stop some fangirls from endowing him with them.
- The Dragon
- Enemy Without
- Evil Counterpart/Evil Twin: To Ven and Sora, kind of.
- Evil Laugh: He does a pretty creepy one in this trailer
at 3:10.
- Eyes Of Gold
- Expy: Well let's see, outfit is similar to Riku's when he was possessed by Ansem, takes the same battle stance as Riku, and he even dons Riku's iconic pose in the opening cinematic (with Ventus running towards him just like Sora no less.)
- Yet it's Sora he has a connection to, through Ven, and he looks like Sora with black hair and gold eyes and an epic Slasher Smile.
- He even has Sora's voice.
- The Faceless
- Grand Theft Me: Not nearly as successful as Xehanort, though.
- Hammerspace Hair: I mean, seriously.
- Humanoid Abomination: Turns out he's the source of all Unversed.
- Kick The Dog: Breaking Ven's toy keyblade that Terra gave him in front of Aqua.
- Made Of Evil: He's quite literally made from Ven's darkness.
- Meaningful Name: His name is derived from the Latin word for vanity, indicating his arrogance. Also, it sounds similar to Ventus, hinting at a connection between the two.
- Obviously Evil
- Pale Skinned Brunette
- Pragmatic Villainy
- Slasher Smile
- Would Hit A Girl: More like Would Stab A Girl.
Disney Villains
A group of classic Disney Villains. In the first game, a group of them conspire under Maleficent's leadership. They are trying to use The Heartless for their own evil means.
Maleficent's original group includes Hades, Jafar, Ursula, Captain Hook, and Oogie Boogie. The second game also introduces Hector Barbossa, Shan-Yu, Scar, and the MCP, who aren't aligned with Maleficent, although she attempts to recruit/manipulate a couple.
- Legion Of Doom
- Villain Decay: They try to get back their former glory in Kingdom Hearts II
- Xanatos Sucker: They believe they use the Heartless without knowing it's actually the Heartless who use them (or, to be exact, that the Heartless are only complying with them because their REAL leader instructed them to.)
Captain Barbossa
"You best start believin' in ghost stories, Miss Turner. For, ya see, tonight - you're in one!"
Clayton
"Blasted gorillas! I'll hunt down every last one of them!"
Evil Queen
"A person’s heart... I’m not interested in something that fades so easily."
Hades
"Did you forget who you're talking to? I am the Lord of the Dead!"
Captain Hook
"And the brat's friends are the king's lackeys. Swoggle me eyes, they're all bilge rats by the look of them.
You may think that all the bosses before Captain Hook might have been annoying but otherwise easy. You might have thought that the rest of the game would go along like this. Even if that wasn't the case, even if you thought that there would be at least one tough boss along the way, Nothing could prepare you for the brokenness that is Captain Hook.
- However, as this video
shows, if you really know how the game works even this guy is easy.
Jafar
"Genie, my final wish! I want you to make me an all powerful GENIE! "
Iago
Master Control Program
"We don't need users."
Oogie Boggie
"Nobody disrespects me! NOBODY!"
The Queen of Hearts
"Off with their heads!"
Sark
"Prepare for de-resolution!"
Scar
"You're in trouble again. But this time daddy isn't here to save you."
Shan Yu
"Now you'll bow to me!"
Lady Tremaine
- Parental Favoritism
- Karma Houdini: Her famous status of this in the original movies is actually avoided here, as her last scene features her, Anastasia, and Druzella presumably killed by an Unversed. Seeing as that same Unversed was just previously attacking Cinderella while the three of them stood by laughing, this is a VERY satisfying fate for them.
- Right Hand Cat
- Smug Snake
- Wicked Stepmother
Ursula
"The sea and all its spoils bow to my power!"
Creatures created by the darkness in people's hearts and the real villains in the story. They want to conquer the entire universe by using the darkness that exist in both people's and the worlds' inner hearts.
Ironically enough, Emblem Heartless do have hearts. Stolen ones, but still.

What's left behind when a heart is lost. Don't take "Nobody" literally: they are the body (and ill-defined "soul") of the person, though usually warped to something unrecognizable as human. Those who had the strongest will before losing their heart, however, can retain human form: see Organization XIII below. We're told they lack emotion, but the fandom disagrees on this issue...
Other Villains
Sephiroth
"The light doesn't suit you!"
The (in)famous Final Fantasy VII villain appears as a fiendishly hard optional boss in both Kingdom Hearts and Kingdom Hearts II. In the latter, there's a bit of a subplot with him and Cloud.
See also his Final Fantasy VII traits.
Riku Replica
"So...it's over. Hmph. Death doesn't frighten me. Good riddance to a phony life. My heart was never real. I'm sure even what I'm feeling now is probably all fake."
Created by Vexen and used as a tool by Vexen, Marluxia and Larxene, and ultimately Axel. Once he finds out that his memories are a fake created by Naminé, he becomes determined to defeat the real Riku and become real himself. You can guess how well that ends.
Organization XIII
Organization XIII
A group of, yes, thirteen (temporarily fourteen) villains introduced in Chain of Memories and 358/2 Days. When someone with a strong heart is turned into a Heartless, the discarded body gets up with a life and will of its own as a Nobody. This group of particularly powerful Nobodies, who were able to retain human form on top of "existing" in the first place, seeks to regain their hearts at whatever cost.
While the Organization is a pretty varied group, the following tropes are universal throughout the Organization:
- Alas Poor Villain: Quite a number of them depending on the player, from the lesser evil ones like Demyx and Luxord to the more evil ones like Larxene and Saïx. Only a few, like Big Bads Xemnas and Marluxia, are immune.
- Alternate Character Interpretation: Are they evil, or misunderstood? Can they feel emotions, or are they just really good actors?
- Badass Bookworm: Half of the gang were Mad Scientists before they got their Evil Makeover)
- Actually, lately screenshots of the upcoming Birth by Sleep suggest only Xehanort, Even and Ienzo were scientists.
- Unless we assume that it takes place before the rest join up with Ansem, which would at least avoid completely retconning the Ansem Reports in KH2.
- Not necessarily; Ansem was the ruler of Radiant Garden as well as a scientist. It's possible that they studied under him for politics instead, and being in the military/guard could be part of that training. Or they could be military scientists.
- Beta Test Baddie
- Black Cloak
- Blue Bishonen Ghetto
- Cursed With Awesome: Congrats on being turned into a Nobody! You now have access to either one of several unique abilities (energy projectile, polymorphism, super strength) or if you were of strong will before losing your heart, a powerful element (fire, water, time etc.). You'll be sent to exciting new worlds and tasked with observing their diverse and intriguing cultures, some of which you could scarcely imagine back when you were stuck on your own. Shame you'll never be able to ENJOY any of this.
- Draco In Leather Pants: As a result of evil being sexy.
- Elemental Powers: Each member controls a certain attribute. Some of these are a bit out there.
- Time and space are elements. They are represented in-game as a timer and teleporting around, respectively. Xemnas has Nothingness as a power, as paradoxical as it may seem, and it is represented, basically, as black and white lightning bolts and red laser swords. Yup.
- Eyes Of Gold: Some members have these.
- Fan Nickname: Orgy XIII. Take a wild guess why.
- Humanoid Abomination: Doubles as a Bishonen Line.
- Ho Yay: Roxas/Axel. Crack Pairings have flanderized this a bit with the others.
- 358/2 Days makes so much more sense if you look at Saïx as a jealous ex...
- Joke Weapon: All fourteen have one in 358/2's Mission Mode if they've equipped the Casual Gear; everyone but Roxas/Xion with the Mystery Gear.
- Leitmotif: "Another Side", various remixes of which appear as battle themes and other themes relating to the group.
- Let X Be The Unknown
- Love It Or Hate It: Organization XIII is a very divisive group of characters among fans, especially its most popular member, Axel.
- The Other Darrin: With the interesting exception of Keiji Fujiwara as Axel, very member introduced in Chain of Memories was voiced by a staff member who was replaced by a professional voice actor once Kingdom Hearts II and Re:Chain of Memories came around.
- Named Weapons
- Red Baron: All of the members except Xion have nicknames to this effect.
- Significant Anagram: Their names are actually scrambled versions of their past names with an X added. However, not all of their past names are known, and Xemnas technically used someone else's name.
- The Soulless
- Spotlight Stealing Squad: Or not, Your Mileage May Vary. On one hand, they have been in more games than most people deem necessary, but on the other hand, their time in the spotlight in Kingdom Hearts II wasn't really that long at all.
- Teleport Spam: Several members get in on the action (no, not like that). The undisputed champion of this would be Fragile Speedster Larxene, who even possesses a sleight in Chain of Memories named Teleport Rush.
- Theme Naming: In Days, the variations on their weapons are all named after some sort of theme (Marluxia's are all flowers, Larxene's are all in French, Luxord's are mostly Tarot cards, et cetera.)
- Viewer Gender Confusion: Wait... there's only one girl? Which one!?
- You Are Number Six: While it definitely indicates order of joining, its significance to actual rank is debatable. For example, nobody cares that Vexen is number four, but he waves it in everybody's faces, as they ignore his whining.
- Also, Marluxia, who is pretty far down at number eleven, still gets to control half the Organization. He and Larxene were also trying to overthrow Xemnas using Sora.
- 358/2 Days reveals that with the exception of Axel, all the members who were sent to Castle Oblivion were were intended to die thanks to Saïx's and Axel's plans to eliminate competition in treachery and rank under the guise of Xemnas' orders.
- Then there's Saïx, who is number seven but acts as Xemnas's number two, and the real number two, Xigbar, who is a bit of a jokester, especially after Flanderization. Though arguably Xigbar is the real number two anyway, given that Birth by Sleep indicates he and Xemnas have been plotting together this whole time.
Xemnas:
"Very good. You don't miss a thing. I cannot feel... sorrow... No matter what misery befalls the worlds. No matter what you think, what you feel, or how you exist."
The leader of Organization XIII, the Nobody of Xehanort, Ansem the Wise's first apprentice, and the Big Bad of Kingdom Hearts II. He does not appear in Chain of Memories, but he is referred to by others as "the Superior".
Xigbar:
"Have you been a good boy? Oh, it sounds like you haven't!"
Number II (though not apparently second-in-command), one of the founding members of the Organization. Although he acts like a surfer dude most of the time, he's actually one of the deadliest members of the group.
As a human, he was Braig, one of Ansem the Wise's six apprentices. He also returns in Birth by Sleep as a recurring foe, and turns out to be a lot more important then anyone suspected.
Xaldin
"Feed your anger! Only anger will keep you strong."
Number III of the Organization and one of its founding members. He spends most of his time trying to corrupt the Beast for the Organization's purposes.
In his past life as Dilan, he was one of Ansem's six apprentices who betrayed him by researching the Heartless.
Vexen
"Pity to be so ignorant. As you're only able to see the surface of things, I should not expect you to appreciate my true might."
Number IV of the Organization and one of its founders. The group's resident scientist, he's always interested in new test subjects for his experiments.
Before he became a Nobody, he was Even, one of the six apprentices of Ansem the Wise who betrayed him by researching the Heartless and destroying the Radiant Garden.
Lexaeus
"I, Lexaeus, will not yield to the frail heart of an infantile coward!"
Number V of the Organization and one of its founders. While he's content with standing aside and letting Zexion do the talking, he's a lot more intelligent and powerful then he seems.
In his past life as Aeleus, he was one of Ansem's treacherous apprentices.
Zexion
"Then I shall make you see...That your hopes are nothing. Nothing but a mere illusion!"
Number VI in the Organization, and one of its founding members. In his previous life as Ienzo, he was the youngest of Ansem the Wise's apprentices.
During Chain of Memories, he tried to corrupt Riku so he could use him to counter Marluxia's coup.
- Akira Ishida
- Badass Bookworm: Literally!
- Cute Shotaro Boy: Or at least, when he was Ienzo. I mean, look at his Famitsu scan; he's shorter than Ven. Cue fangirls Squee-ing.
- The Chessmaster
- Deceptive Disciple
- Fan Nickname: "Sexy Zexy", at least in Fan Fic.
- To be honest, Zexy was actually used in Chain of Memories. ReCoM left it out.
- Jerkass Woobie: When one considers his life, from his childhood in Birth by Sleep to when he meets his end in Chain of Memories, he sorta becomes this.
- Killed To Uphold The Masquerade: Zexion was actually in a position to become the 2nd in command. Saïx being a Dragon With An Agenda, takes advantage of the traitor situation in Castle Oblivion and sends Axel to kill Zexion.
- Master Of Illusion
- Noblewomans Laugh
- Non Action Guy and The Unfought: Spends more of his time plotting than fighting, but that changes in Final Mix+, though even there his fighting methods are rather unconventional.
- Peek A Bangs: But he's not bloody emo, damn it.
- Red Baron: The Cloaked Schemer.
- Smug Snake
- Squishy Wizard
- Teen Genius
- Throw The Book At Them: His lexicon, the Book of Retribution.
- Tome Of Eldritch Lore: All of his lexicons, judging from their names.
- Villainous Breakdown
- White Haired Pretty Boy: Well, more silver, really. And kind of purple-ish too...
Saïx:
"True, we don't have hearts, but we remember what it was like. That's what makes us special."
Number VII in the Organization. Second-in-command to Xemnas and responsible for overseeing every other members' missions. Underneath his stoic exterior is a raging berserker just waiting for Xemnas to cut him loose.
It's revealed later that his somebody Isa was once close friends with Axel. The two even planned to overthrow the Organization together, with Saïx becoming Xemnas' right hand to facilitate this plan. However, he lost sight of his goal and truly became Xemnas' ally, then turning on Axel.
Axel:
"What's your problem!? You both...think you can do whatever you want. Well, I'm sick of it. Go on, you just keep running! But I'll always be there to bring you back!"
Org XIII's 8th member. Spent Chain of Memories being awesome and then KH2 being... obsessed with a fifteen-year-old boy. Days reveals his Other's name to have been Lea.
- Anti Villain: He's a straight up villain at first, but changes due to his friendships with Roxas and Xion.
- Base Breaker: The Organization as a whole is this, but Axel, more than any other single member, is loved by many and utterly hated by others. Whether he's a sympathetic character or annoying Estrogen Brigade Bait, and whether he's an admirable Manipulative Bastard throughout Chain of Memories or crossed the Moral Event Horizon with his murders of teammates, Your Mileage May Vary.
- Big Brother Instinct: With regards to Roxas. His driving motivation from the middle of 358/2 through KH2, after he started essentially raising Roxas and acting as a surrogate parent. Of course, alot of this has more to do with himself than with Roxas until toward the end.
- Catch Phrase: Kioku shita ka? In Chain of Memories it was the robotic-sounding "Commit it to memory." KH2 retranslated it as the more natural-sounding (but no less annoying) "Got it memorized?" It remains the same in 358/2 Days.
- Character Derailment: Went through both Bad Ass Decay and Villain Decay in KH2.
- Chronic Backstabbing Disorder: Don't even try to deny it.
- Dropped A Bridge On Him: Unexpected and a bit pointless, in some people's opinion.
- Demoted To Extra: A major character in Chain of Memories and 358/2 Days; surprisingly inconsequential in Kingdom Hearts II.
- Dragon With An Agenda
- Ensemble Darkhorse
- Evil Red Head
- Expy: Red-haired anti-villain, working for an evil organization, who shares an English and Japanese (and French and Spanish and German) voice actor. Does this remind you of anyone?
- Gender Blender Name: His human name was Lea. It's supposed to be pronounced "Leah" according to the katakana, but the English version pronounces it "Lee", presumably in an attempt to make it sound masculine.
- Keiji Fujiwara
- Launcher Of A Thousand Ships: Axel is pretty much the fandom's whore.
- Lets Get Dangerous: "You really do remember me this time? I'M SO FLATTERED."
- Lovable Traitor: He and Saïx were planning on betraying Xemnas, which meant he also needed to get in good with Marluxia and Larxene and then betray them so that they wouldn't betray Xemnas first. And he's just so cool in doing all this.
- Manipulative and/or Magnificent Bastard: He killed one of his own just to get close to the leader...so he could betray the leader as well.
- Playing With Fire
- Poisonous Friend: His obsession with "helping" or "protecting" Roxas rarely corresponds with what Roxas actually wants.
- Quinton Flynn
- Red Baron: The Flurry of Dancing Flames.
- Redemption Equals Death
- Rings Of Death: His chakrams, the Eternal Flames.
- Saved By The Fans: He was originally going to die in the prologue of KH2, but ended up lasting most of the game instead because of fan reaction.
- Stalker With A Crush: Or at least borderline it...
Demyx
"Do you ever get the urge to do something stupid... and AWESOME!?"
Number IX of the Organization. While he is more capable then Sora is willing to give him credit for, he's laughably bad at being a villain and kind of a wimp.
Luxord
"If only the whispers at the top of the ladder carried to the bottom rung..."
Number X. He's suave, has a delicious British accent and he likes card games. He views life as a game and has all the time in the world to win it.
Marluxia
"As lightless oblivion devours you, drown in the ever-blooming darkness!"
Number XI, recruited by Xigbar and Xaldin. He is given charge of Castle Oblivion and attempts to engineer a coup against Xemnas with the help of Larxene and the presumed help of Axel.
- Big Bad: Of Chain of Memories.
- Cherry Blossoms: They look more like rose petals in Re:CoM, however.
- Green Thumb
- Large Ham: Still has nothing on Xemnas though.
- Magic Knight: In 358/2 Days.
- Manipulative Bastard: Not as magnificent as Xemnas, Axel, or Saïx and not as smug as Zexion or Vexen, but fairly in the middle.
- Petal Power
- Real Men Wear Pink: His attribute is flowers. Plants in general presumably, but mainly flowers.
- This seems less weird when you consider the significance of cherry blossoms in Japan, the fact that he was originally supposed to be a woman (well, that explains everything!) and that Byakuya Kuchiki uses pink flower petals to cut his opponents into teeny little bits.
- Red Baron: The Graceful Assassin.
- Sinister Scythe: His scythe, Graceful Dahlia.
- Spin To Deflect Stuff
- The Grim Reaper: Motif-wise, he fits. He uses a scythe, has several sleights referring to death (i.e. Death Scythe, Doom, etc.), originally appeared as a hooded figure, and his Nobody familiar even uses the same weapon and appears in a form similar to Death during the Final Battle in Re:CoM.
- The Starscream
- Shuichi Ikeda
- What Could Have Been: He was supposed to be a woman, but the only two women in an organization of men trying to overthrow its leadership, and then failing, didn't fly.
Larxene
"More pain for you means more fun for me!"
Number XII of the Organization and close ally of Marluxia. Gleefully sadistic, she enjoys tormenting others for the fun of it.
Roxas:
"Sora... You're lucky. Looks like my summer vacation is ...over."
Number 13 in the above. Think he's critical to the plot? A mysterious Nobody able to wield the Keyblade, he defected when he realized that the Organization (sans Axel, though at the time Roxas doubted even that) cared nothing for him.
He's also Sora's Nobody.
Xion
"It's too late... for me to undo my mistakes. But you can't let Xemnas... have Kingdom Hearts. You can't. Goodbye, Roxas.. See you again. I'm glad... I got to meet you. Oh... and of course, Axel, too. You're both my best friends. Never forget. That's the truth."
The 14th member of the Organization, introduced in 358/2 Days.
- Alas Poor Villain
- Anti Villain
- Artificial Human
- Base Breaker: On par with Axel when it comes to Organization XIII base breakers.
- Beta Test Baddie
- Break The Cutie: Xemnas, you bastard...
- Cloning Blues
- Common Mary Sue Traits: From a character description, one would think Xion is a Mary Sue straight from a bad fanfic. Thankfully, as you can see below, this isn't the case.
- Fan Dumb does not care.
- When have they ever?
- Copy Cat Sue: Deconstructed in the worst way imaginable for the poor girl.
- Die For Our Ship: Is it not bad enough that she actually DOES die?
- Dying As Yourself: Xion transforms into some kind of creature when you battle her, but returns to normal as she dies.
- Gender Bender: Overheard on Fandom Secrets: "So does that make her a futa?"
- Go Mad From The Revelation: Twice-subverted. She initially resists such a proposition despite the pain she feels, until Xemnas interferes in an attempt to force her to absorb Roxas. Not that he actually succeeded - she's only feigning insanity because she needed Roxas to destroy her artificial body so she could return to Sora, where she (quite lucidly) decided that she belonged.
- Leitmotif: Widely considered the series' best, too.
- Light Is Not Good
- The Load: She's a fairly weak fighter and has to be supported a lot on missions. However it turns out this is intentional, as Xion is designed to grow stronger through absorbing memories of Sora from Roxas, which in turn makes Roxas weaker.
- The Mario: Her only difference from Roxas is that she can't dual-wield.
- That's not the only difference. If you play as Xion during the boss battle against her, she (the playable one) takes less damage.
- Real Women Never Wear Dresses: She's in the Organization and yet she's not an Action Girl. HOW DARE SHE?!
- Meaningful Name: She's named after a flower (shion) that symbolizes remembrance.
- Rescued From The Scrappy Heap: Your Mileage May Vary as to what degree.
- Ret Gone: Only Xion knows that she herself existed. She stays happy with memories of friendship with Axel and Roxas.
- Significant Anagram: "No. i".
- Split Personality Merge: With Roxas, and later Sora by extension.
- Talking To Herself: Alyson Stoner also voices Kairi in a quick flashback sequence in Days.
- Theme Naming: Her part in the "girls related to Kairi" group is shio for tide.
- Woobie Destroyer Of Worlds
