Here's a full list of the fish, aliens, and pets to the game. Please note that due to stories being a large part in a pet or alien's characterization, all story-related spoilers will be unmarked.

Fish

The regular fish encountered in the game, your goal is to keep these guys safe from alien attacks.

     Guppy
The Guppy is the default fish for the game. It costs 100 dollars, and eats fish food. it has 4 growth levels: Baby, which produces nothing, teen, which produces silver coins worth 15 dollars, adult, which produces gold coins worth 35.
  • Awesome Moment of Crowning: Feed a guppy enough, and it will become a royal guppy, causing it to turn blue and gain a crown. These guppies drop the even more valuable diamonds, which are 200 dollars each.
  • Starting Units: It's the smallest fish, but great for starting off with.
  • Zerg Rush: It's a good strategy to do it with these.

     Carnivore
The Carnivore is the second fish in the game. It costs 1000 dollars, and eats baby guppies. It also produces gems worth 200 dollars, but does not have growth levels.

     Star Guppies
Star Guppies are adult guppies that consumed a star potion. They produce stars, the primary food of Starcatchers, which also give 40 dollars.
  • Magic Potion: The star potions that they consume to turn into a star guppy. The potion itself is harmful to non-adults however, and will combust on consumption.
  • Awesome Moment of Crowning: Much like their regular counterparts, they can turn into royal guppies.

     Starcatcher
Starcatchers are lavender bucket-like fish that cost 750 dollars. They swallow stars produced by star guppies, and turn them into gems.

     Guppycruncher
Guppycrunchers are ground-bound fish that cost 750 dollars. They jump up and eat guppies, and they produce beetles worth 150 dollars.

     Beetlemuncher
Beetlemunchers are tadpole/frog/whatever things that cost 2000 dollars. They eat beetles the guppycruncher makes. They produce pearls worth 500 dollars.

     Breeders
Breeders are Prego-like fish that cost 200 dollars. When they grow, they can create guppies for free, and like guppies, they can grow into teens and adults.

     Ultravore
Ultravores are incredibly large, grey fish that cost 10,000 dollars. They eat carnivores, and produce chests worth 2000 dollars. They also have a unique sound effect when being dropped into water.
  • Real Men Eat Meat: An even bigger example than Carnivores. They are the largest fish, at twice the size of a Carnivore.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Averted, as they are on your side. Played straight if you're a carnivore, though.

Pets

Various creatures that help you out in various ways. You can only bring a few of them at a time, however, requiring some planning to tackle the next stage.

     Stinky
Stinky is the first pet you gain. He's a bottom dwelling snail that collects coins, but hides in his shell during alien invasions.
  • All Men Are Perverts: He collects money because it impresses ladies.
  • Artistic License ā€“ Marine Biology: His design is much more in line with a land snail than a sea snail.
  • Crutch Character: Among other coin collecting pets, he's pretty easy to use and has no real downsides other than not being able to collect anything during alien attacks. He also conflicts with Nimbus, whose speed and ability renders his utility useless.
  • High-Pressure Emotion: Turns red whenever he hasn't collected coins in a while because of Nimbus.
  • Lovable Coward: He hides in his shell during alien invasions.
  • Properly Paranoid: At first, him hiding from aliens doesn't make sense, as they don't hurt pets at all. Come the final boss battle, however, his fear is quite justifiable.
  • Transplant: He later appeared in Plants vs. Zombies in the Zen Garden mode.

     Niko
Niko is the second pet you obtain. He is an oyster who occasionally produces pearls worth 250 dollars.
  • Clam Trap: Averted. He will open his mouth only when he's about to give you the pearl, and he will not eat any one of your fish.
  • Crutch Character: One of the earliest character that gives you an alternative way to get a good amount of money, but his rate is rather slow and Shrapnel and Brinkley will soon outclass him.
  • Perplexing Pearl Production: Continuously creates valuable pearls, and while this happens slowly compared to other money-producing pets, he does so much faster than real oysters.
  • Your Soul Is Mine!: He believes that demons may steal his soul through his open mouth, explaining why he does not do so more often.

     Itchy
Itchy is a swordfish that attacks aliens. He has the power of a level one laser.
  • Berserk Button: He gets an angry face when an alien is in the tank. Considering what they did to him, can you honestly blame him?
  • Beware the Nice Ones: He left Gash for dead one time.
  • Crutch Character: His damage value is pretty alright on earlier levels. Once Tank 3 and Psychosquid comes along, he will be outclassed by your laser gun fast.
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge: An alien ate his friends, and he's trying to return the favor.
  • We Used to Be Friends: He used to be besties with Gash, until he left the latter for dead.

     Prego
Prego is a somewhat human-like guppy that gives birth to guppies every now and then.

     Zorf
Zorf is a seahorse that produces level 2 food for hungry fish.
  • Crutch Character: He's pretty helpful early on for growing fish, but falls out of use when level 3 food is available.
  • Expy: He has one in the form of the Peashooter from Plants vs. Zombies, where his mouth design is pretty similar to one.
  • New-Age Retro Hippie: Downplayed, but the reason why he doesn't produce level 3 food is that the food pills are rich in fat and has boatloads of preservatives, while the level 2 one is organically made.
  • Team Chef: In a fishy sense, since he's the pet that provides food to your guppies.

     Clyde
Clyde is similar to Stinky in the fact that he collects coins. However, he can move freely around the tank, but is slower than Stinky.
  • The Dutiful Son: His main reason for working around the tank is because he needs money for his mother's hospital bill.

     Vert
He is a skeleton fish that drops gold coins just like a large guppy, but does not need to be fed.
  • Creepy Good / Dark Is Not Evil: His codex entry states that people avoid using him because they fear that, him being a product of occult forces, will turn on them. The codex states that he obviously isn't evil because he would drop rat poison if he was.
  • Crutch Character: He is good for starting in earlier levels where fish are still young and are either incapable of laying coins or can only provide coins worth $15 at a time, but he soon gets outclassed later on when you have multiple fish dropping coins or diamonds at a time.
  • Dem Bones: He is a skeleton fish.
  • Perpetual-Motion Monster: His main selling point is that he can provide money without the need to eat.

     Rufus
He is a fiddler crab with one large pincers that has a power level of level 6 laser gun, but stays on the ground and will only attack enemies on the surface level (or the one you push into the bottom).
  • Dance Battler: He used to be a dance instructor with his own studio, but becomes a mercenary after a freak accident in the building.
  • Lightning Bruiser: Exceptionally fast, and can dish out a great deal of damage. His only weakness is that he stays up in surface level, remaining dormant otherwise if enemy isn't within the surface level proximity.

     Meryl
She is a mermaid who will occasionally sing and increases the drop rate of all money from guppies in the tank for a short time. She is also the game's hostess as she appears in the main menu and the fish emporium
  • Gameplay and Story Integration: The Carnivores and Ultravores sees her as nothing but another corporate-sponsored pop star, which is the reason why they are not affected by the rate-up boost from Meryl's singing.
  • Idol Singer: When she sings, she will cause the current guppies to go on an uproar where they will produce coins (and diamonds) at instantaneous rate.

     Wadsworth
He is a blue whale that will put all your small and medium guppies into his mouth every time an alien commences an attack.
  • Animals Not to Scale: Exaggerated. Blue whales are the largest living animals in the world, and this particular specimen... is about as large as an adult guppy, and only slightly larger than a tadpole.
  • Crutch Character: He's useful for the first few alien attacks in a level, as he can protect your guppies who are still growing from being killed. As you progress, however, this becomes worthless as your economy relies on large guppies and/or non-Guppy fish. Adding to that, he has to contend with Gumbo only a few levels later.
  • Descent into Addiction: Somehow addicted to Plankton few years before the events of the game begin.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Upon realizing that during a rescue mission, he ate all of the guppies in his mouth by accident, he went into rehab.
  • Noodle Incident: Was once addicted to Plankton, causing him to lose his friends and muscle control one day.
  • Obvious Rule Patch: In Challenge Mode, Wadsworth falls asleep if the only living fish in your tank are small and medium guppies, preventing the player from creating a scenario where a game over is impossible.

     Seymour
He is a sea turtle that will slow any objects that falls off the ground, including its fade out speed.

     Shrapnel
He is a robot fish that will occasionally drop bombs that can kill your fish, but the bomb can be clicked and salvaged for parts, giving you a good sum of money.
  • Animal Mecha: He's a robot fish.
  • Cartoon Bomb: His bombs look like this.
  • Expy: He looks like a robotic version of Ultravore.
  • Hair-Trigger Explosive: Considering the slow descent underwater, his bombs can still explode on contact and kill your fish if you're too slow.

     Gumbo
Gumbo is a black angler fish with a purple tail and purple fins that attracts fish to the corner opposite of an alien's location.
  • A Wolf in Sheep's Clothing: Is accused of making it easier for aliens to kill fish, since he wrangles them all into one spot. While this can happen, especially against Type-U, he more often than not protects the fish. He also mentions that he was given no quarter in the final boss fight, so he couldn't have been on their side.
  • Animal Gender-Bender: His model is that of a female angler fish as males are much smaller to the point that they attach to females for life as a reproductive organ.
  • Light Is Good: He's unlike other anglerfish since he lures fish away from danger.

     Blip
A porpoise with psychic powers, capable of detecting your fish's hunger and where aliens will appear.
  • All of the Other Reindeer: He was hated by other fish when he was young, because of his ability to tell when they were hungry.
  • Blessed with Suck: Blip's ability to open the shop becomes detrimental when playing Challenge Mode, as it causes the prices to start increasing from the start.
  • Combo Platter Powers: He supports the player by unlocking purchase options early, indicating when fish are hungry before they turn green, and displaying alien health and entry points.
  • Mistreatment-Induced Betrayal: One day, he detected something in the tank that gave him a bad feeling, but chose not to tell anyone because of how they bullied him.
  • Psychic Powers: His abilities are stated to be psychic in nature.
  • Sapient Cetaceans: He's a porpoise that provides support with his intellect and psychic abilities.
  • Survivor Guilt: After all the fish that mistreated him were killed, Blip felt guilty and made a vow to use his powers responsibly.

     Rhubarb
A pink-limbed hermit crab hidden in a conch shell. He uses his claws to snip your fish off the tank floor.
  • Berserk Button: Downplayed, but he really dislikes when fish are at the bottom of the tank, and will snap his claws to make them move up.
  • Low-Tier Letdown: In-Universe, he's considered the most useless pet available. Not that he cares at all, however; all he wants is for fish to stay off the damn floor of the tank.
  • Shadowed Face, Glowing Eyes: His face his hidden from inside his shell, leaving only two yellow eyes visible.

     Nimbus
A manta ray that can bounce food and coins off his back, keeping them from touching the tank floor.
  • Utility Party Member: He bounces back any coins or food pellets that land on him, allowing them to be collected again before they fall to the tank's floor.

     Amp
An electric eel that can send a lethal jolt of electricity to your tank, killing off your fish populace in an instant. You'll get a diamond for each fish killed off this way.
  • Ambiguous Gender: Neither their description nor their story use any gendered pronouns for them.
  • Electrified Bathtub: Seemingly how their electricity kills every guppy at the same time.
  • Face of a Thug: While they have a scary appearance with solid red eyes (and is willing to kill fish with their electricity) they remains on the player's side.
  • Friendly Fireproof: A zig-zagged inversion; only standard guppies and Nostradamus clones are affected by their shock, other types of fish, pets, and aliens are unaffected.
  • Psycho Electric Eel: An electric eel that shocks every guppy in the tank to produce diamonds.

     Gash
An orange Great White Shark who attacks aliens. While stronger than Itchy or Rufus, he can snack on your guppies.
  • Awesome, but Impractical: Gash's damage is even greater than that of Itchy and Rufus, but he also eats guppies of any size as he pleases. This can make him non-viable in tanks other than 4, where guppies aren't handed out like candy.
  • Enemy Mine: In spite of his grudge with Itchy, the duo can accompany the same tank and fight aliens together still.
  • It's Personal: His reason to fight the aliens is to settle a score with them after he was left for dead to fend against them himself.
  • Threatening Shark: He's a shark who can chomp an alien's health bar away in a second, and is one of the few pets who can actively hinder the player, as he munches on guppies.
  • We Used to Be Friends: He was originally one of Itchy's best friends, but during a dangerous alien attack, Itchy high-tailed out and left Gash for dead. He wants revenge on Itchy, even if not as badly as with the aliens who nearly killed him.

     Angie
An angel fish who resurrects dead fish.
  • Back from the Dead: Her main capability is to revive fish that have been killed without being eaten, such as those killed by starvation, by rockets, or energy orbs.
  • Gameplay and Story Segregation: After the fifth tank, she revives pets that have been eaten, despite being unable to do so normally.
  • Holy Halo: Befitting her angelic theme, she has a halo that periodically vanishes and reappears.
  • Medium Awareness: In her description, Angie claims that she can't save every fish, because if she did, the frame rate would go down.
  • Non-Action Guy: Is notably absent during the final battle. Justified because she needed to be available to resurrect any dead pets after the battle.
  • Our Angels Are Different: She's an angelfish with literal angelic powers. She has a Holy Halo and the ability to bring dead fish back to life.

     Presto
Presto is not a real pet. Despite this, he has the ability to turn into any other pet you wish.
  • No Origin Stories Allowed: Invoked. Unlike the other pets, Presto lacks a true backstory, with his story stating that he's not actually a real pet and is just made up for the game.
  • Voluntary Shapeshifting: He can transform into any other pet the player owns. His power does take time to recharge, preventing you from changing him too freely.

     Brinkley
A scuba-diving elephant who likes peach muffins and brown sticky things, and dislikes arugula. He's the first bonus pet in the game, eating your fish food and giving you money after having his fill.

     Nostradamus
Supposedly the nose of Rutherford B. Hayes. He is the second bonus pet, dripping snot that can turn guppies into more of himself. He can also sneeze hard enough to halt an alien attack.
  • Gag Nose: Is little more than a nose with a tailfin and mustache.
  • Joke Character: He gives off this impression, what with his absurd design and his snot being the most worthless money type of them all. However, his Sneeze of Power can prove useful when it comes into play.
  • Nasal Weapon: His "Sneeze of Power" is able to delay the arrival of aliens.
  • Nose Nuggets: Drips snot that is worth $1 when clicked.
  • The Virus: Any guppy that eats his nose drippings transforms into another Nostradamus.

     Stanley
A sea serpent who knows no fear. Unless it's badgers. Or aprons. Or apron-wearing badgers. He is the third bonus pet, throwing balls at aliens to attack.

     Walter
A penguin whose presence will bring charity to the Falafel Foundation. He is the last bonus pet, armed with boxing gloves to punch fish for various effects.
  • Catching Some Z's: After using his glove a certain number of times, a bubble showing some Zs appears above his head and he is unable to punch again for a while.
  • Cooldown Manipulation: His boxing glove makes any fish instantly drop money, and forces certain pets to instantly activate their abilities.
  • Extendo Boxing Glove: Keeps one inside his beak.

Aliens

The main threat of your aquarium, these guys are after your fish and want to either eat or destroy the populace. Either method leads to their death, and it's your job to shoot them dead.

     Sylvester
An alien who once ran a popular sushi bar in San Francisco. He eventually sold his business when he found his way to the Insaniquarium to feast upon the freshest fish: yours.
  • Dual Boss: He's most often seen alongside Balrog.
  • Faceā€“Heel Turn: He used to be an owner of a sushi restaurant, before he turned to villainy after warping to the aquarium.
  • From Nobody to Nightmare: He ran his sushi bar until discovering a portal to the Insaniquarium, at which point he sold the bar to pursue his dream of killing fish. The "nightmare" part is downplayed though, as he is the weakest of the aliens.
  • Tom the Dark Lord: A Xenomorph Xerox with the unlikely name of Sylvester.
  • Warm-Up Boss: He's the first and easiest alien to take care of, having very low health.
     Balrog
A lion-like alien with a mane of red hair. He takes pride in that hair of his, too.
  • Dual Boss: For tanks 1, 2, and the final boss fight, he teams up with Sylvester in multiple alien signatures. In tank 4, however, Sylvester is swapped for Psychosquid (Bilaterus if the difficulty has been upped in Challenge Mode).
  • The Fighting Narcissist: His story mentions that he takes particular care with his hair to keep it looking full and luxurious.
     Gus
Labeled a Type-G Alien, Gus is a rotund, goofy alien with a voracious appetite. Your laser won't do a thing to him, requiring alternate methods to defeat him.
  • Anti-Frustration Features: When he invades the tank, all fish food drops are free, so fighting him won't break your bank or otherwise set your progress back.
  • Death by Gluttony: He's destroyed by feeding him fish food until he explodes.
  • Dissonant Laughter: It turns out he's not laughing about killing fish, but because of a joke he heard back in 1984 he still finds funny. The joke
  • Fat Bastard: He has quite the belly to him, and he's an alien who attacks your tank.
  • Giggling Villain: His appearance is accompanied by a Simpleton Voice chuckle.
  • No-Sell: He takes no damage from lasers until the Final Boss fight, and instead takes damage from eating.
  • Villainous Glutton: Too bad that food's his weakness...
     Destructor
The Type-D alien, Destructor is a toy robot gone rogue, equipped with missiles. Being, well, robotic, he'll instead blast your fish to smithereens with his missiles.
  • Ambidextrous Sprite: Has an interesting way of handling this! Whenever he turns around, his hand and missile launcher retract and then pop back out on the opposite arms, to keep him from needing two separate sprite sheets.
  • Crosshair Aware: The fish that he aims for are marked with a crosshair, and any non-targeted fish are unharmed by his missiles.
  • Didn't Think This Through: The scientist who created him now admits that giving him missiles was a bad idea.
  • Homing Projectile: Periodically fires three missiles that lock on to the fish farthest from him.
  • Kids Are Cruel: He was originally created as a toy for a scientist's nephew, but it turned out his nephew liked to torture fish, resulting in Destructor's current behavior.
  • Killer Robot: A robot that kills fish with missiles.
     Psychosquid
The Type-P alien, wielding a cleaver, flyswatter, and a rake in his tentacles. He has the ability to absorb lasers and heal while blue.
  • Healing Factor: Whenever he enters his blue mode, the energy from your lasers get absorbed and converted back into health.
  • Improbable Weapon User: Uses a butcher's knife, a broken pitchfork, and a flyswatter.
  • Mix-and-Match Critter: In spite of his name, he has elements of both a squid and an octopus.
  • Stalker with a Crush: His name is actually what his ex-girlfriend calls him because he would act like it never happened and would constantly call her and wait outside her door.
  • Shout-Out: He uses the T-Rex screams from Jurassic Park when he enters and when he switches off his healing mode.
     Ulysses
Alien Type-U, Ulysses is a slow, stone cyclops who can blast your fish tank with energy balls. The balls don't dissipate when shot at, and must be deflected carefully to avoid fish annihilation.
  • Cyclops: Has a single, giant eye.
  • Eye Beams: He doesn't fire beams, but he shoots energy balls.
  • Golem: Appears to be made of dried mud, stone, or concrete.
  • Honor Before Reason: The reason he doesn't shoot pre-charged energy balls, besides being dumb, is that there's a code of honor among his kind that forbids them from doing such a thing.
  • Tennis Boss: He can be damaged by deflecting his projectiles towards him.
     Bilaterus
Alien Type-II, a two-headed skeletal alien that requires defeating both of its heads to take down completely.
  • Ambiguous Gender: Bilaterus is the only alien in the game to not have its gender revealed anywhere, not even its own story.
  • Conjoined Twins: They're joined together by the spine.
  • Dem Bones: Is a two-headed, skeletal snake.
  • Flame War: Bilaterus fans have arguments over which of the two heads are the better one.
  • A Head at Each End: It has one round head, and one pointy head.
  • Punny Name: It's a pun on "bilateral", since it has two heads.
  • Sequential Boss: If you defeat one head, you have to fight the other.
  • Snakes Are Sinister: It makes a snake-like hissing sound when it enters, and has a long segmented body.
     Cyrax
The alien mastermind behind the invasions.
  • Evil Laugh: A very imposing one, at that.
  • Final Boss: Is the last alien you fight in the game.
  • Know When to Fold 'Em: He decides to abandon his ambitions of killing fish after being defeated in Tank 5, to start a talk show. This becomes Gameplay and Story Segregation when replaying Adventure Mode, as he can be rematched upon reaching Tank 5 again.
  • No Such Thing as Bad Publicity: In-Universe, his talk show, Food 4 Thought, has metric tons of controversy, but he revels in it.
  • Retired Monster: After the aliens failed the battle in Tank 5, Cyrax decides to instead start his own talk show.
  • Support Party Member: Despite being the head honcho of the aliens, he can't eat pets himself. He instead summons other aliens and his own Mini-Sylvesters to attack them.
  • Walking Spoiler: His entire existence, and the idea that the aliens even have a leader, is completely hidden until the completion of Tank 4-5.

Virtual Tank Fish

Unique fish that only appear in the Virtual Tank, having traits that don't appear in the main game at all.

     Bilaterus Head
A head of the Bilaterus, minus the skeletal spine (or the other head) that links the two.
  • Token Heroic Orc: One of the aliens that can cohabitate your tank, and is as civil as your usual Carnivore.

     Mini-Sylvester
A tiny, juvenile version of the Sylvester.
  • Fun Size: They're the size of a Carnivore or a large Guppy. They eventually grow to their normal size, though, and will need the larger Ultravore to satisfy their needs.
  • Token Heroic Orc: A friendly, domesticated minion from Cyrax's army.

     Unique Attributed Fish
Special traits the fish can potentially have that set them apart from their common kin.
  • Animate Inanimate Object: The Fish Emporium can sell living versions of Stanley's balls.
  • Amazing Technicolor Wildlife: The Fish Emporium can sell differently-colored versions of the guppies and carnivores, though they're more expensive than the regular ones. It gets even more wild when you encounter the rainbow ones that constantly change color, allowing you to have a literal rainbow of fish in your tank.
  • Chameleon Camouflage: Invisible fish are invisible, with a slight background distortion outlining their silhouette. They only turn visible when they need to feed, then fade back into the background after eating.
  • Fantastic Diet Requirement: Fish with exotic diets will only eat pizza, ice cream, or fried chicken; common human foodstuff.
  • I'm a Humanitarian: Fish with a very special diet can potentially prey and cannibalize on their own kind.
  • Music Is Eighth Notes: Musical genius fish will occasionally sing a simplified cut of classical music, represented by eighth notes coming out of them.
  • Opposite Day: Forwardly challenged fish swim and eat in reverse. They're otherwise content, at least.
  • Roar Before Beating: Roar Before Eating, rather. Voracious fish will let out a loud roar before gulping down on food.
  • Super-Speed: Speedy fish, zipping around the tank about as fast as getting snipped by Rhubarb. They're so fast they sometimes miss the food when trying to eat.

Special Pre-named Fish

These critters are special fish with a set of traits assigned to fit their personality.

     Cookie
A "fishy philanthropist" beetlemuncher who can spawn exotic food and feeder fish to feed other fish with exotic diets. Cookie has a uniquely mundane diet of fish food, not beetles.
  • Support Party Member: Unlike other Beetlemunchers, Cookie does not produce shells of any kind. Instead, they produce food for other fish who don't eat fish food.
  • Team Chef: Of the Virtual Tank. Cookie has the ability to feed fish with unique diets. Together with Zorf, they can make the Virtual Tank self-sufficient on food.

     Johnny V
A rainbow carnivore who's hopelessly addicted to pizza, and swears that the ones he's given will be his last.

     Kilgore
A purple ultravore who likes intimidating fish with Richard Wagner's Ride of the Valkyries.
  • Leitmotif: Wagner's Ride of the Valkyries, sung before Kilgore preys on a carnivore. Notable among musical fish in that this is the only song Kilgore can sing.
  • Palette Swap: Kilgore is a purple ultravore, a color ultravores normally can't have.
  • Purple Is Powerful: A purple recolor of the biggest, baddest fish in the game, and comes packing ferocity not found in many other Ultravores.
  • Roar Before Beating: As a Voracious fish, Kilgore will roar before chomping down on a carnivore. This only happens if Ride of the Valkyries is playing, however.

     Ludwig
A blue and black, aqua-finned carnivore who sings music composed by Ludwig van Beethoven.

     Rocky
A blue and white guppy with a special low-carb, high-ultravore diet. Rocky is unable to grow past the first stage.

     Santa
A white and red fish with a festive theme. Santa is unique in that they instantly grow to maximum size in just two feedings and drops shell bags, and sings Christmas carols.
  • Santa Claus: In fish form! Santa can sing Christmas carols, drops sacks (of shells), and likes giving presents to good boys and girls.
  • Secret Character: Santa is not in the store rotation, and has to be obtained in another way. Just name a regular guppy "Santa", and you'll get one.
