Kiwame Quest avatar

The main character of the story, he's a high school student who uses video games to escape the reality of his terrible life. He was previously a member of the track team before he quit.

  • Accidental Murder: He ends up killing Martin after he tackles him, causing the knife Martin was using to eat an apple to stab his throat.
  • Distinguishing Mark: His most distinguishing trait is a mole under his left eye.
  • Berserk Button: Do not call him "piss boy" nor remind him of the times he wet himself.
  • Bring My Brown Pants: He pees his pants in sheer terror when Mizarisa is about to cut off his limbs and Reona can't do anything to help him except cheer him on. This actually saves him from further torture since that distracted Mizarisa enough for Amos to stop the inquisition. It was also a factor in him leaving his school's track team before the events of the story.
  • Butt-Monkey: Life hasn't treated him fairly. He left the track team at his school due to peeing his pants in public, he's constantly bullied, his younger sister belittles him, he's unable to buy the game he originally wanted due to giving money to his bullies, gets practically scammed by Reona, and his first moments in Kiwame Quest go horribly wrong. It all goes downhill for him from that point on.
  • Catchphrase: Has one in the English dub, "Yeah, that tracks". He says this usually when something humiliating happens to him.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Hiroshi was a member of his school's track team, but him tripping during a track meet and then wetting himself in public caused him to quit in embarrassment. He's also currently directionless in life, has a severe defeatist attitude and very cynical about the real world, preferring to escape into virtual reality MMO games.
  • Deconstructed Character Archetype: Of the Stock Light-Novel Hero. He is a talented runner, but found out very quickly that he can't compete due to his body involuntarily relieving itself whenever he is actually in a high-pressure situation. He thus gives up running and engrosses himself in full dive MMORPGs, to the disappointment of everyone who once looked up to him. Then when he starts playing Kiwame Quest, after getting tricked into it, he finds that he is terrible at the game and can't figure it out at all and immediately locks himself into the hardest route. Furthermore, aside from his (still impressive) running ability, he has no useful skill or power, and instead has to rely on an older, better player who once beat the game and created a guide. All in all, when it comes to talent, looks, and skill, he's got nothing. He still does build an Unwanted Harem of sorts, but there is extra emphasis on the "unwanted" part.
  • Disappointing Older Sibling: He was a star runner of his school's track team, which earned him his younger sister Kaede's admiration. However, after quitting the team due to pissing himself in public, snapping at her and devoting his time to playing VRMMOs all day, she constantly looks at him with scorn and disparages him when she gets the chance. This clearly frustrates him, though his mother points out that she simply wants him to be her "cool big brother" again.
  • Escapism: Hiro loves to play VRMMOs because it's his way of escaping the "shitty" real world.
  • Mike Nelson, Destroyer of Worlds: He bears the title of "Best Friend Killer" after he accidentally kills Martin.
  • Mistaken for Pedophile: When he attempts to rescue a little girl from murderous goblins, Reona busts his chops by accusing him of being a lolicon, ignoring him saying it is the right thing to do. When he succeeds in saving the girl, to his fury, "Lolita Complex" is added to his in-game title.
  • Rage Breaking Point: Hiro was always annoyed over his "shitty" real life, but kept it in because he always had an escape. However, getting hit (and actually hurt) by his "best friend" NPC in a hyper realistic VRMMO proved be the last straw. Enraged, Hiro tackles Martin and unintentionally murders him by making him shove his knife through his throat. Hiro's anger turns to confusion when he notices Martin isn't moving, which finally becomes full-blown panic when he sees him bleeding out on the floor.
  • Screams Like a Little Girl: He gives plenty of high-pitched screams due to the many painful and scary situations he finds himself at.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: With the "adult event" proving to be the last straw, Hiro declares that Kiwame Quest isn't fun and logs out, vowing to never play again. He logs back on at the end of Episode 4.

    Reona

Reona Kisaragi

Voiced by: Ayana Taketatsu (Japanese), Natalie Van Sistine (English), Karina Altamirano (Latin American Spanish)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/reona_real.png
Kiwame Quest avatar

A beautiful young woman working in a game store, and the one who convinces Hiro to buy Kiwame Quest. She's very knowledgeable of the functions and mechanics of the game.

  • Adaptational Skimpiness: In the light novel and manga, her fairy avatar wears a see-through skirt. In the anime, her fairy avatar only has two streamers trailing from her hips.
  • Big-Breast Pride: Given how she reacts when she reveals Kamui rejected her, she's rather proud of her enormous chest.
  • Boob-Based Gag: Kamui refers to her as a "Holstein cow" for good reason. Reona's breasts are each almost the size of her head!
  • Broken Pedestal: She has one over Tesla in Episode 11, though it's more comedic in nature than Alicia's moment. She is very disappointed that Tesla turned out to be evil, mentioning he was one of her favorite NPCs of the game due his attractiveness and badassery.
  • Buxom Beauty Standard: She has an ample bust and the Big-Breast Pride that comes with it. When Hiro first meets Reona, he is completely entranced by her huge breasts. It was probably a factor into her tricking him to buy the game.
  • By the Eyes of the Blind: NPCs and enemies cannot see or hear her.
  • Fairy Sexy: Her fairy avatar in Kiwame Quest wears skimpy clothes that put on display her spectacular body.
  • The Gadfly: She loves to tease Hiro, in-and-out of the game.
  • Honey Trap: She effectively seduces Hiro into logging in the game again in Episode 4, promising to marry (and thus have sex with) him if he becomes the second person after Kamui to beat Kiwame Quest.
  • I Have Boobs, You Must Obey!: This is partially the reason why Hiro was conned into buying the game in the first place.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Though she often shows her "jerk" side more; the way she treats Hiro is pretty appalling, continuously laughing and delighting in his various indignities and refusing to apologize for any of it. Their first interaction even has her scamming him out of his money by tricking him into buying Kiwame Quest then refusing to refund it afterwards. That said, she does seem to genuinely care for his safety, is willing to protect him from danger and tries her best to be encouraging whenever he advances further in the game, even when it's usually inappropriate to do so. This may be subverted, however, once one learns that she only wants Hiro to beat the game so she can spite Kamui.
  • Magical Barefooter: In the light novel and manga, her fairy avatar is fully barefoot. In the anime, she instead wears stockings that don't cover her heels and toes.
  • Ms. Fanservice: She's easily the bustiest character so far and wears a skimpy outfit as a fairy. There's also frequent shots centered on her enormous bouncing breasts.
  • Stripperiffic: Her outfit in Kiwame Quest leaves little to the imagination as it covers just enough to not expose her nipples and genitals.
  • Support Party Member: Once she shows up in the game, Reona becomes one to Hiro. She takes on the form of a fairy, who monsters and enemies cannot see, and promises to teach Hiro more about the mechanics of Kiwame Quest.
  • Woman Scorned: Her motivation for tricking Hiro into playing Kiwame Quest is entirely because she wants to get back at Kamui for rejecting her 10 years ago due to her large breasts.

    Alicia (Unmarked Spoilers

Alicia Von Rotarzen / The Fruit Slicer from Hell

Voiced by: Fairouz Ai (Japanese), Kayli Mills (English), Wendy Malvárez (Latin American Spanish)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/alicia_14.png

Hiro's sweet childhood friend in Kiwame Quest. She holds romantic feelings towards him.

  • Ax-Crazy: While she starts as a sweet and well-meaning girl, the trauma of Martin's death turns her into a violent, murderous yandere who will not stop pursuing Hiro until she kills him. By the time she reappears again in Episode 10, she's noticeably cooled off. While still quick to violence, like cutting off a thief's hand, she's much calmer and her hate towards Hiro is shown in a more cold and apathetic light.
  • Bait the Dog: Upon finding Hiro after he escaped, for a second it looks like she has regained her sanity. However, she then reveals she plans to kill Hiro, then kill herself so the two of them can reunite with Martin in the afterlife, thus confirming her sanity is completely gone.
  • Broken Pedestal: She reacts with shock and horror at the reveal that Tesla, a man she genuinely admired for his bravery and compassion, is in truth an evil man serving a corrupt ruler and shows zero concern for the lives of his subordinates.
  • Childhood Friends: In the game, Alicia is meant to be Hiro's childhood friend and it's clear that she has a crush on him. That crush soon evolves into a murderous obsession after Hiro inadvertently kills her brother, Martin.
  • Creepy Monotone: After spending multiple episodes screaming in an Ax-Crazy rage, all her dialogue in Episode 10 is done in a cold monotone that makes the underlying rage clear.
  • Death by Irony: She plans on slicing up Hiro using the very same knife Martin stabbed himself with when Hiro tackled him.
  • Driven to Suicide: She wishes to kill herself after killing Hiro so that the both of them can reunite with Martin in the afterlife.
  • Dying Declaration of Love: As she's dying from her Heroic Sacrifice, she admits to Hiro that she had forgiven him a while ago at her brother's behest and joined the Guard specifically to protect him. She even states that his confession from episode 6 actually made her happy before telling him to live a full live as she finally succumbs to her wounds.
  • Eyepatch of Power: She's shown wearing an eyepatch around her right eye after Reona injured it while making time for Hiro to escape after Alicia nearly kills him. This is only temporal, however, as she quickly drops it upon her next appearance.
  • Fluffy the Terrible: Her titles "Hell's Fruit Slicer" and "The Fruit Knife Wielder from Hell" (as well as "The Fruit Slicer from Hell" in the dub) are both hilarious and terrifying, as well as also showing just how far off the deep end she's gone.
  • Forgiven, but Not Forgotten: She tells Hiro in the finale that she forgave him after the spirit of her brother told her to and even joined the Guard to protect him. However, she still hasn't forgotten what he's done and spends the previous two episodes glaring and reminding him of Martin's murder.
  • Girl with Psycho Weapon: She had always displayed some skill with a knife, mostly for cutting up apples. But after her brother's murder, she's gone completely crazy with it, wanting to use her skills to murder Hiro.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: She jumps in the way of Tesla's sword when he's about to kill Hiro, revealing she forgives him for Martin's death. Tesla deems it a Senseless Sacrifice, saying that all it did was prolong Hiro’s life by a few minutes. Unfortunately, he’s right.
  • Hypocritical Humor: In the English dub, when noticing Hiro yell at Reona, Alicia tells him that "only madmen talk to themselves". Granted, she cannot see or hear Reona due to being an NPC, but it's still pretty rich coming from someone who's become murderously insane.
  • Implacable Woman: After becoming a full-fledged yandere, she will not stop pursuing Hiro no matter how many times he tries to escape. She'll chase him to the ends of Earth.
  • Light Is Good: She's a nice, friendly girl with blonde hair, blue eyes and light colored clothes. Unfortunately, after Martin dies, she becomes the exact opposite.
  • Madness Mantra: In the subbed version, Alicia starts saying Hiro's name over and over, each time sounding more deranged and angry than the last.
  • Nice Girl: She's shy, sweet and pacifistic until Hiro kills her brother and shows genuine concern and horror for her friend's supposed Sanity Slippage.
  • Nightmare Face: She pulls a terrifying one when she tells Hiro in an alleyway that she will kill him, coupled with a deranged grin with sharp fangs, distorted eyes and a Voice of the Legion.
  • The Only One Allowed to Defeat You:
    • She doesn't take kindly to people interfering with her vendetta against Hiro; she's especially enraged when Mizarisa shows up before she got to slice Hiro.
    • It's implied this is reason why she joins the Guard since Hiro has a higher chance of dying to the goblins without help. Likewise, she doesn’t call Ginji's bluff of snapping Hiro's neck despite making it clear she still hates him.
  • Perpetual Frowner: While she does do her signature Slasher Smile towards Hiro upon joining the Guard, she spends the rest of the time afterwards frowning or glaring at him.
  • Rage Breaking Point: Alicia definitely reaches her boiling point after Hiro inadvertently kills her brother; she grows more and more enraged when Hiro cannot think of a solution to this problem, and when he finally leaves the house, she has more or less gone full Ax-Crazy.
Alicia: (Japanese version) 'Hiro, you bastard! Don't you dare run away!
    Alicia: (English dub)
    YOU COWARD! COME BAAAAAACK!''
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge: After Hiro escapes from her house after inadvertently killing Martin, she starts chasing him down like a savage animal, to Hiro's horror.
  • Sanity Slippage: After Hiro accidentally killed Martin, Alicia very quickly grows more rage-filled and disturbed in response to that and his inaction. When he finally escapes, she goes off the deep end. She seems to have reversed somewhat by Episode 10. While still clearly holding a grudge against Hiro, she's far more stable and can even function in a team with both Hiro and Mizarisa, both people she hates. She does slice off a thief’s hand, however.
  • Slasher Smile: She always carries one after she goes insane, especially when around Hiro.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: She joins the Guard presumably to keep an eye on Hiro and makes it clear that, while they're on the same side, she’s far from ever forgiving him. At best, she's willing to not murder him at the first opportunity. Ditto with Mizarisa with the two making it clear they dislike each other despite being able to work well as a pair.
  • Together in Death: Her ultimate goal for her and Hiro; she wants to kill him, then kill herself, so that the two of them will reunite with Martin and be friends again in the afterlife. She gives up on it later after Martin’s spirit asks her to forgive him.
  • Tranquil Fury: By Episode 10, her anger towards Hiro manifests in cold glares, insults and harsh reminders of Martin's murder rather than her previous Ax-Crazy behavior. Hiro's just as if not more scared by this.
  • Troll: With the reveal in the final episode that she decided to forgive Hiro, her previous behavior in Episodes 10 and 11 can be seen as this. She dons a Slasher Smile, sneaks up behind him, and throws a thief’s severed hand at him without warning. This was all just to make him scared and think that she might still kill him even though she no longer wishes to.
  • Undeathly Pallor: Her skin becomes a sick greenish gray when Hiro returns to the house. Him telling her he loves her briefly turns her back to a normal, healthy color before she snaps back due to her grief.
  • Walking Spoiler: Along with Martin, it's really hard to talk about her without spoiling the first episode.
  • Wide Eyes and Shrunken Irises: As a part of her Sanity Slippage, Alicia's blue irises get noticeably smaller as her eyes get bigger.
  • Yandere: What she ultimately becomes; she does understand that what Hiro did to Martin was an accident and, despite that, is still in love with him. However, she wants to kill him anyway as a "sweet release" and that she'll follow him so that they and Martin will be friends again in the afterlife. This is pointedly averted later on. While she still tries to kill Hiro, she considers his love confession to be insulting and too little too late after what he’s done. By the time she reappears in Episode 10, there's no trace of her previous Mad Love and she very clearly just hates him, though considering her final act toward him in episode 12, she might've been pretending. Ironically, she’s also far less murderous toward him.

    Mizarisa

Mizarisa

Voiced by: Shiori Izawa (Japanese), Sarah Anne Williams (English), Azucena Miranda (Latin American Spanish)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mizarisa_9.png

The town inquisitor in Kiwame Quest.

  • Bait the Dog:
    • She initially appears as a harmless prison guard who leads Hiro to a special event in Kiwame Quest "designated for adults". What Hiro at first mistakes for a sex simulation quickly reveals itself for a torture session, with Mizarisa intending to dismember Hiro piece by piece until he either confessess he murdered Martin or stands the torture so he gets pardoned for the crime.
    • Later on, she performs a Big Damn Heroes to save him from Alicia because she wants to torture him herself and she can’t do that if he’s dead.
  • Big Damn Heroes: She saves Hiro just as Alicia is about to kill him when he tries to retrieve his sword. She does it again when she saves him from a goblin while he's in the bathroom.
  • Casual Kink: She's very open about wanting to see Hiro pee himself. This even includes her keeping the soiled sheet after he peed himself and stalking him while he's using the bathroom.
  • Cute and Psycho: She's a cute girl who's violent and sadistic.
  • Fashionable Asymmetry: The stocking she wears on her left leg is longer and less creased than the one of her right leg. Along with that, her left twintail is also longer than the right one.
  • Girl with Psycho Weapon: A red BFS.
  • Hypocritical Humor: She tells Hiro he should stay away from Alicia because she’s creepy and wants to kill him. Hiro points out Mizarisa is also creepy and, at the very least, wants to sadistically torture him.
  • Interplay of Sex and Violence: After Hiro repeatedly refuses or runs from her requests to torture, dissect or amputate his body, she earnestly makes it clear that she doesn't intend it to be "all pain", and that she legimately seeks to give him just as much pleasure.
  • A Lighter Shade of Black: To Alicia. While they’re both people who don’t exactly have Hiro’s best intentions at heart, Alicia wanted to kill Hiro, though she gives up later, while Mizarisa just wants to torture him. Likewise, for all her terrible characteristics, there’s no indication she’s aware of Tesla and Govern’s plan to kidnap and murder goblin children for blackmail.
  • Nominal Hero: She's on the side of the heroes, but there's very little heroic about her. She's violent, sadistic and makes it clear she's only helping Hiro because she wants to torture him. Both times after she rescues him, she either asks if she can cut a finger off as compensation or just outright stabs him without warning.
  • The Only One Allowed to Defeat You: She rescues Hiro from Alicia, saying Hiro is her prey.
  • Sadist: As the inquisitor of Ted, she shows delight at the prospect of brutally torturing criminals by dismembering them. She even almost orgasms when Hiro wets himself when she was about to cut one of his legs and asks to cut off one of his fingers in exchange for her help.
  • Scary Teeth: Her teeth are very sharp and shark-like, indicating her dangerous nature.
  • Stalker with a Crush: She follows Hiro around after he escapes his torture/execution and even saves him from both Alicia and a peeping goblin because of it. Hiro is clearly not amused.
  • Stripperiffic: Her inquisitor "outfit" only covers her chest, crotch and legs, leaving everything else in full view.
  • Villainous Crush: "Crush" is definitely overstating it, but she's definitely obsessed with performing sadistic acts on Hiro and even joins the Guard to help with that goal.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: Her fate is unknown after she is knocked unconscious by One-Eye.

    Kaede

Kaede Yuuki

Voiced by: Aoi Koga (Japanese), Kate Bristol (English), Erika Ugalde (Latin American Spanish)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kaede_4.png

Hiro's younger sister, with which he has a strained relationship with ever since he left the track team.

  • Broken Pedestal: She once looked up to her older brother Hiroshi, but ever since he quit the track team and became a VRMMO-playing NEET, she treats him with disdain and their relationship is currently strained as a result.
  • Tsundere: A platonic example; she does still care greatly for her older brother, but hides it through her derisive, harsh attitude. Whenever Hiro notices that she shows concern for him, she'll instantly brush it off with an insult.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: She's definitely a bit harsh about it, but Hiro's mother states that she only tears him down because she wants him to improve himself and be her "cool big brother" again.

Game NPCs

    Martin

Martin Von Rotarzen

Voiced by: Haruki Ishiya, Natsumi Fujiwara (young) (Japanese), Ben Lepley, Krystal LaPorte (young) (English), Miguel Ángel Leal, Diego Becerril (young) (Latin American Spanish)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/martin_66.png

Hiro's best friend in Kiwame Quest, as well as Alicia's older brother. An affable young man who really cares for Hiro's well-being.

  • Childhood Friends: Martin is meant to be Hiro's childhood friend alongside Alicia, and thus is confused and disturbed when Hiro asks how to leave Ted, forgetting that it's illegal to do so. He then becomes fully distraught when Hiro calls him an idiot in anger and outright states he doesn't give "a shit about some weird-named tree" as he attempts to remind him of a promise they made under the Kenura tree. He's so enraged by that dismissal that he uppercuts Hiro hard enough to send him flying. That moment ultimately cost Martin his life.
  • Developing Doomed Characters: He's one of the first NPCs Hiro encountered, and it's shown that he was a Nice Guy who showed genuine concern for his friend's mental stability and tried to keep him from leaving the city for his own safety. Unfortunately, he proved to be a tad hot-headed in his approach, angering his friend enough to tackle him while he was holding a knife. As such, he ended up becoming the first fatality and part of Hiro's realization of just how realistic this game can be.
  • Dies Wide Open: He dies with his eyes wide open.
  • Get A Hold Of Yourself Man: Believing his friend to be going mad, Martin decides to punch Hiro to try and help him "open his eyes." Instead, it only makes him angry (mostly due to his nose getting bloody) and it escalates into a full blown fight that quickly turns fatal.
  • Ghastly Ghost: His soul appears to Hiro during "Martin Time" to haunt him until he remembers the promise they made in the Kenura tree, spitting blood to an horrified Hiro.
  • Jacob Marley Apparel: His ghostly form still presents the knife with which he stabbed himself to death.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Martin unwittingly triggers Hiro's Rage Breaking Point after beating him up to try and dissuade him from becoming an adventurer. From Martin's perspective, he was just trying to show his best friend Tough Love to try and convince him that he'll get himself killed trying to be an adventurer.
  • Walking Spoiler: Along with Alicia, it's really hard to talk about him without spoiling the first episode.

    Tesla

Tesla

Voiced by: Satoshi Hino (Japanese), Jason Liebrecht (English), Dave Ramos (Latin American Spanish)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tesla_4.png

The captain of the Guard in Kiwame Quest.

  • The Ace: Is mentioned he's a genius among the populace of Ted, being able to use magic very few can and having unmatchable skill with a sword.
  • The Bad Guy Wins: Thanks to Govern unbalancing Hiro at the last moment, Tesla manages to kill him in-game, leaving the secret of Ted hidden and presumably keeping ruling the city with an iron fist.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: He presents himself as an affable and reasonable authority figure who treats everyone fairly. In actuality, he's a ruthless tyrant that kidnaps baby goblins to use their relatives as a threat to keep the inhabitants of Ted isolated in the city and doesn't have any problem murdering anyone who discovers the truth, including his own men.
  • Dragon-in-Chief: Govern doesn't do much while Tesla does all the heavy lifting for her.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Despite having no problem disposing of his soldiers if they learn the truth about the goblin conspiracy, his verbal breakdown to Amos about how bad of a superior he is seems to indicate that even if Tesla's a rotten man, at the very least he doesn't tolerate incompetent people in important positions.
  • Evil Redhead: He's revealed to be one in Episode 11, where he reveals he and Govern are in league with keeping Ted isolated using the goblins as a mean to keep both the inhabitants and possible travelers from leaving or entering the city.
  • Faux Affably Evil: He initially appears as a Reasonable Authority Figure, but once his true colors are revealed, he's shows to be a cruel sadist who mocks Hiro for his imminent death and even laughs at the death of Alicia.
  • Hero Killer: He manages to kill both Alicia and Hiro in Episode 12.
  • Karma Houdini: He receives no punishment for his actions at the end of the anime, and even gets to kill Hiro despite his heroic power-up.
  • Lady and Knight: Has this relationship with Govern, being her most trusted knight and also her lover. They appear to be a Bright Lady and a White Knight, but are in truth a Dark Lady and a Black Knight.
  • Light Is Not Good: With his golden armor and lightning powers, one would think he's a good figure, and he certainly acts the part. Unfortunately, Episode 11 reveals his true nature as a cruel enforcer of Govern.
  • Meaningful Name: His name is Tesla, and he has electricity-based powers.
  • Pet the Dog: Considering his true colors, saving Hiro from torture/execution and deeming him innocent was somewhat noble of him, especially since it would have cost him nothing to let Hiro rot.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: After an investigation, Tesla concludes that Martin's death was an accident. As a result, Hiro is acquitted. This is greatly subverted after it's revealed he and Govern are using the goblins to rule Ted without any interferences from the outside kingdoms, not caring about how many people die at the hands of the goblins and even killing the ones who learn the truth about their actions himself.
  • Red Is Heroic: In addition to being a redhead, he's a genuinely heroic character that gets in the first line of defense to save the citizens of the town and is one of the few NPCs who treats Hiro with respect. The Reveal of his true nature completely subverts this, however.
  • Shock and Awe: His magic allows him to command lightning to strike his enemies.
  • Unholy Matrimony: With Govern. They are lovers who employ the fear of the goblins as a mean to rule Ted for themselves, eliminating anyone who learns the truth.
  • Walking Spoiler: Given that he was more of a minor character in earlier episodes, it's hard to talk about him without mentioning his true, villainous nature in being a co-conspirator in the goblin conspiracy alongside his lover, Govern.
  • Would Hurt a Child: His and Govern's entire plan hinges on kidnapping goblin children and threatening to murder them if the goblins don't obey their commands.

    Govern

Govern

Voiced by: Shizuka Itō (Japanese), Lisa Ortiz (English), Azul Valadez (Latin American Spanish)

The queen and regent of the city of Ted in Kiwame Quest.

  • The Bad Guy Wins: As a result of Hiro dying in his battle against Tesla, she keeps her position as ruler of Ted and presumably keeps maintaining the goblin conspiracy.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Initially presented as the benevolent queen of Ted, she eventually reveals herself to be Tesla's partner in the ploy to keep Ted isolated from the rest of human kingdoms, being as ruthless and evil as he is.
  • The Glomp: Upon meeting Hiro, she rushes to him and gives him a big hug, greatly surprising him.
  • God Save Us from the Queen!: While feigning the image of a benevolent ruler, in truth she's a power-hungry tyrant who frequently orders the kidnapping of innocent goblins (who are generally intelligent and don't tend to attack humans) to force their relatives to attack Ted and discourage people from inside and outside the city to escape or enter it so she can keep the power of the city for herself and Tesla, not battering an eye at the thought of having her own subjects being cruelly murdered by the goblins and even ordering Tesla to personally kill the people who end learning the truth about their secret actions.
  • The High Queen: She's a beautiful, friendly woman who's respected by all the citizens of Ted. She's eventually revealed to be the exact opposite in Episode 11.
  • Karma Houdini: She receives no punishment for her actions at the end of the anime, and plays a role in Hiro's death.
  • Lady and Knight: Has this relationship with Tesla, being his beloved queen and also his lover. They appear to be a Bright Lady and a White Knight, but are in truth a Dark Lady and a Black Knight.
  • Meaningful Name: Her name alludes to her position as the ruler of Ted.
  • Non-Action Big Bad: She doesn't display any form of combat or magic, and lets Tesla get rid of nuisances. She does, however, unbalance Hiro after quietly approaching him in the climax of the anime, allowing Tesla to kill him.
  • Perpetual Smiler: She's usually seen with a relaxed and peaceful smile that she even keeps when she's revealed as the true main antagonist of the series.
  • Unholy Matrimony: With Tesla. They are lovers who employ the fear of the goblins as a mean to rule Ted for themselves, eliminating anyone who learns the truth.
  • Walking Spoiler: Given she only appears once before her true nature is revealed, it's hard to talk about her without mentioning her true tyrannical nature and the goblin conspiracy she and Tesla use to keep Ted in check.

Other Players

    Ginji

Ginji

Voiced by: Katsuyuki Konishi (Japanese), Brent Mukai (English), Dafnis Fernández (Latin American Spanish)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ginji.png

A veteran player of Kiwame Quest, to whom Hiro goes to get advice of how to solve his problem with Alicia.

  • Affably Evil: He's seems to be a helpful and jovial guy despite being a remorseless murderer who'll also happily sell you out. He's a lot less jovial once he shows his much nastier personality.
  • Defeat Equals Friendship: Defied and mocked. When Hiro assumes they struck up a friendship of sorts after their fight, Ginji mocks him and says that this is something that only happens in high school dramas.
  • Evil Counterpart: To Hiro; both are indivduals who play VRMMOs to escape from the hardships of every day life. Except, while Hiro is otherwise a decent young man who's prone to making terrible mistakes in the game like accidentally killing Martin and suffers from its hyper-realistic mechanics, Genji is an alcoholic, gambling addict who actually enjoys the realism and purposefully killed both of his NPC friends.
  • Fat Bastard: A big guy who's a nasty piece of work. He even comments that he has gout in real life.
  • Jerkass: An absolutely massive one. He sells out Hiro to the guards for a payday, mocks him afterwards and claims Hiro should be grateful since it indirectly got him acquitted, which wasn't Ginji's intention at all, and then continuous to mock and call him names like "piss boy".
  • Logical Weakness: Because of his gout he can’t exert himself too much and both Hiro and Alicia pacify him by smacking him in the gut.
  • Pet the Dog: About the only decent thing he does is treat Hiro's injury with a herb during their first meeting.
  • The Sociopath: When Reona called him "garbage" it was more of an Understatement, at least a little bit. The guy killed his own childhood friend on purpose because he got annoyed with him, then proceeded to kill the other because she wouldn't stop screaming. He feels zero remorse about this and even tells the story to Hiro as if it was a funny anecdote to tell to friends at the bar. Granted, it is a game and his victims weren't real people. However, this is a moot point considering the hyper realistic nature of the game.
  • Stout Strength: Despite appearing out of shape, he knows judo and is skilled at strangleholds. That's how he killed his NPC friends.

The only player of Kiwame Quest who was able to successfully complete the game.

  • The Ace: He's the only player to ever beat Kiwame Quest, with his fame describing him as an unbeatable player that was able to surpass such a hellish game with little to no trouble.
  • Broken Ace: In spite of his talent with video games, Kamui is noted to have been very arrogant and obnoxious back during his time in high school.
  • Buxom Beauty Standard Inverted. He prefers small-breasted women to big ones, which is why he rejected Reona.
  • Jerkass: He at least was one during his high school days, as shown with his Kiwame Quest guide. He's incredibly dismissive of the players that came to read the guide, insults them and his advice is not helpful at all.
  • Mundane Solution: Most of the advice he gives in his tutorials for the game boil down to "exercise".
  • "Not So Different" Remark: As he prepares to reenter the game after Tesla killed him, Hiro realizes the same thing happened to Kamui. As such, Hiro has a newfound respect for Kamui.
Kamui: You got killed by Tesla and had your console fried, right? Worm totally fits.
Hiro: Yeah, you're right. I did. But I'm about to restart with the method you taught me.
Kamui: You're still gonna play? You don't know when to give up.
Hiro: About that though, Kamui. The fact that you knew that method of restoring the game... You actually had your console fried, too, didn't you?
  • Plague Doctor: He's not one per se, but in his guide of Kiwami Quest, he's shown covering his face with a plague doctor mask to hide his identity.
  • Sink or Swim Mentor: It's revealed that Kamui's this when Hiro's able to get past the former's jerkass behavior to focus on the actual solution to the vague advice he provides.
