  • Glurge: A series specifically created to mock the Stock Light-Novel Hero archetype, it comes off as incredibly mean-spirited. Its means of trying to get Hiro to overcome his issues and leave his NEET lifestyle is to put him through humiliating moments one after another and be forced to put up with people who treat him with disdain. Even after he finds a means to fight, he still gets completely trounced by characters with more combat experience than him. It eventually comes to a head as the anime adaptation ends with him accomplishing absolutely nothing and the villains' complete victory. If anything, all this really does is make you be glad that characters like Kirito exist in the first place.
  • Jerks Are Worse Than Villains: While Tesla and Govern are the villains, Reona is arguably worse than them. She's forcing Hiro to play a game that is supposedly impossible to beat, with said game able to cause agonizing pain to the player and where dying in-game will result in the destruction of the player's console. Why? Because she wants to spite Kamui for not being interested in her huge breasts, something she took way too personally. She also doesn't care about the hell she's putting Hiro through, and to top it all off, Hiro's not the first person she's manipulated in her attempts to get revenge.
  • Just Here for Godzilla: Among all the cast, Alicia stands out for receiving approval from most fans due to her being an Ax-Crazy Yandere who wants to kill Hiro for accidentally murdering her brother. Some have even claimed they continued to watch the series purely due to her.
  • Nightmare Fuel:
    • Martin's death in the first episode is surprisingly graphic for a comedic anime. After being tackled by Hiro in a fit of rage, he stabs himself with the knife he was using to eat an apple, dying instantly with his eyes wide open. This sounds bad enough, but there is no censoring at all during the scene, and you can clearly see the pointy end of the knife piercing Martin's throat, along with the puddle of blood the injury causes.
    • Everything related to Alicia, especially after Martin dies. There's nothing scarier than a crazy Childhood Friend who wants to kill Hiro with the exact same knife that killed her brother and later herself after she does that. She also learns how to fight by herself and is capable of fighting on par with an inquisitor like Misariza.
    • Think Tesla is a typical Knight in Shining Armor who treats Hiro with respect? Wrong. It turns out Tesla is a ruthless tyrant who kidnaps baby goblins in order to use their relatives as a threat to keep the inhabitants of Ted isolated in the city and doesn't have any problem murdering anyone who discovers the truth, including his own men. Then there's Govern. Presenting herself as a benevolent queen, she's actually an evil ruler who is also behind the kidnapping of baby goblins.
  • The Scrappy: Reona drew the ire of a lot of fans for her Jerkass moments, constant Lack of Empathy and her refusal to stop making piss jokes at Hiro's expense. Others also took issue with her essentially scamming Hiro then refusing to refund him and using Honey Trap tactics to keep him playing a game that's clearly not doing him any favors. And then there's finally her reason for wanting Hiro to beat the game: she simply wants to spite Kamui because he said he wasn't interested in her due to her colossal breasts. Kamui might've been rude about it, but Reona took it way too personally, and she's held this grudge for ten years. Worse still, Hiro's not the first person she's baited into playing the game for the purpose of her revenge.
  • Slow-Paced Beginning: At the time the anime adaptation premiered, only two volumes of the light novel had been released. An average adaptation will typically adapt a volume of the light novel in four episodes. By virtue of the lack of content to actually adapt for a full 12-episode season, the series moved at a glacial pace, much to the criticism of many viewers.
  • Unintentionally Sympathetic: While the series is ultimately about Hiro's self-improvement, much of the humor comes at the expense of him to the point where many viewers felt it was too mean-spirited. As such, despite the series wanting to treat Hiro's suffering like it's Laser-Guided Karma for his NEET lifestyle, he never directly or intentionally does anything to warrant it.
