Cid's Hideaway

    General Tropes

Located in the Central Storm Deadlands, and constructed from Fallen architecture, the Hideaway serves as a refuge and haven for the realm's disenfranchised, where Bearers and Dominants are granted the right to live as human beings, rather than pawns and servants of the various kingdoms of Valisthea.

  • The Bartender: Maeve is the bartender of the Crown & Tub, the hideaway's personal pub.
  • Caring Gardener: Nigel is the hideaway's head botanist after the death of the first two in Titan's raid. He helps to develop ways of cultivating plants even in the deadlands, and cares for every leaf and flower he grows.
  • Cool Airship: The second hideaway is built in the ruins of a Fallen one called the Invincible, a Mythology Gag to past Final Fantasy airships. That said, it never takes off in flight.
  • Criminal Found Family: They're outlaws, after all, and on many occasions refer to everyone in the hideaway as members of their family.
  • Forgotten Fallen Friend: Averted in the second hideaway. Those who were killed in Kupka's attack on the first hideaway are remembered at the second hideaway in various ways.
  • Home Base: The hideaway acts as the secret base for everyone wishing to further Cid's cause. It is located in some Fallen ruins in the deadlands, and after it is destroyed their second base is in Fallen ruins on a lake, also in the deadlands.
  • Killed Off for Real: Many of their number are killed off in Titan's attack on the hideaway, prompting them to rebuild it in another place. Many of the surviving members find ways to honor the fallen from then on, averting Forgotten Fallen Friend.
  • New Meat: They're always recruiting new members, but one particular case, a new recruit named Ember has his admission test to the Cursebreakers overseen by Clive. He wishes to be a scout like Gav, which is even more dangerous work and requires more than being able to just swing a sword.
  • N.G.O. Superpower: While they aren't officially a recognized organization and do not have militaristic objectives, they were practically this for the connections they possess in the countries outside the Hideaway and for having more than two Dominants under their umbrella.
  • Outcast Refuge: The hideaway is a safe, neutral location for as many Bearers as they can fit, and they are growing all the time. Cid's Hideaway is destroyed by Titan, but when Clive becomes the new leader they make a new one in the Lake of Bennumere.
  • Stern Teacher: Shirleigh is a young woman in charge of the education of the hideaway's children, and she is known for keeping them in line.
  • Team Chef: Kenneth is the hideaway's primary chef, though Molly takes over after he is killed in Titan's raid on the hideaway.
  • Those Two Guys: Tett and Crow, a pair of young twins who are almost always in Harpocrates's library, that he took under his wing when they lost their parents.
  • True Companions: Was already a pretty tight-knit group under Cid, but they all grow closer under Clive's leadership and are unfailingly loyal to each other.
  • Underground Railroad: They help the liberated Bearers hide from the wrath of their countries.
  • Your Magic's No Good Here: Since the hideaway is located in the Deadlands where there is little to no aether in the air, no one can use magic in there, instead relying on manual labor or various inventions created by Cid or Mid. Unfortunately, this isn't enough to stop Hugo from priming, as he uses Titan to destroy the original Hideaway. The second hideaway, situated in a Fallen airship ruin in the middle of a Blighted lake, is also set in the Deadlands, the location presumably to prevent Kupka from channeling Titan with a lack of his element.

    Otto

Voiced by: Alisdair Simpson (English), Jiro Saito (Japanese)Foreign VAs

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/otto_23.png

The person responsible for keeping the Hideaway running, he's a strict but caring man who supports the cause wholeheartedly and makes sure everyone has something to do.

  • Hypercompetent Sidekick: He is portrayed this way to Cid, keeping things in order while the more relaxed and devil-may-care Cid does his own thing. Even Cid knows it, writing in a note discovered after his death that the hideaway "would be fucked without [Otto]".
  • Jerkass to One: In Otto's quest, he's shown to be rather brutal and strict with Gaute, for whom he has very little patience due to the latter's incompetence. Admittedly, it's because Gaute potentially overlooked debt of 15,000,000 gil from three of its most trusted allies; and Otto is unhappy that Gaute tried to get help from Clive, "the man in charge of the place you've been cheerfully trying to bankrupt", instead of coming clean to Otto to begin with.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: While he's rather blunt, and impatient with slackers and incompetent workers, he's been nothing but helpful to the liberated Bearers and provides for them however he can.
  • Number Two: While Gav is in charge of scouts, Otto is tasked with domestic affairs, making sure that the Hideaway is able to sustain its dwellers and keep them safe.
  • Parental Substitute: He sees himself as a second father to Mid, and helps take care of her especially after Cid dies.
  • Replacement Goldfish: It's implied that he sees Mid as a replacement of sorts for his own child, who was killed for being discovered as a Bearer in infancy.
  • Team Dad: Otto looks over everyone in the hideaway, especially when its leader is away. He is stern and unflappable, and is sometimes shown to give Tough Love to people like Gaute, who he personally rescued when the latter was thrown out by his old masters. His advice is always valued, and Clive often goes to him for it after major story events.

    Tarja

Voiced by: Michelle Fox (English), Serika Hiromatsu (Japanese)Foreign VAs

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tarja_5.png

The Hideaway's main physicker, she makes sure that whoever comes to them receives the necessary healing and care. She struggles to make her two most frequent patients Clive and Jill listen to her and rest, since in her eyes they seem determined to pick up more wounds.

  • Deadpan Snarker: Not as much as Cid, but she doles it out with the best of them.
  • The Medic: She's the most skilled medic among the Bearers, especially with the use of non-magical methods, taking on the responsibility of running the hideaway's infirmary.
  • Mercy Kill: Tarja is a big proponent of voluntary euthanasia, letting those who are suffering in the last stages of their stone curse die painlessly with one of her medicines. This is a hard lesson she learned in the past, and something her apprentice Rodrigue also struggles with.
  • Muggles Do It Better: Her entire goal as a practitioner is developing non-magical medical techniques in a world that rarely had need of them, so as to spare Bearers such as herself from being forced to use their powers for curative magic at the cost of their own health. Implicitly enforced due to her workplace being in the middle of the deadlands, where magicks cannot be used.
  • Mythology Gag: Her appearance in 873—her hood-like red hair and predominantly white garb—calls to mind the classic White Mage design, befitting her status as the hideaway's expert physicker.
  • The Patient Has Left the Building: Unfortunately for Tarja, Dominants under her care share a bad habit of disobeying her orders of staying in bed and properly recovering from their wounds.
Tarja: What is it with the princes of this realm and their aversion to rest…?
Clive: Ah… Ask me when I get back.
  • Professor Guinea Pig: Tarja perfected the surgical procedure to remove the extremely deadly facial tattoo Bearer brand on herself before removing it from others.
  • The Reliable One: Noted for her practicality and pragmatism, able to take charge in a crisis without hesitation and part of Clive's trusted inner circle. When Clive tells Gav that he is in command, it's only unless Tarja says otherwise.
  • Self-Surgery: Tarja operated on herself to remove her Bearer brand, a facial tattoo made of ink containing an incredibly deadly poison so Bearers don't try to do this out of fear for their life. She succeeds, paving the way for the Cursebreakers and Clive to have their Brands removed.

    Charon

Voiced by: Lorraine Bruce (English), Tomoko Miyadera (Japanese)Foreign VAs

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/charon_8.png

A shrewd merchant and the Hideaway's quartermaster, she's in charge of keeping their stock full and providing necessary items.

  • Berserk Button: As the Bauguin learns the hard way: never, ever, ever endanger Goetz in your revenge against her. She might finally repay you for the eye you took from her.
  • Deadpan Snarker: She almost always has a snarky quip, especially for someone who annoys her.
  • The Dreaded: Many people fear getting on her bad side, especially Goetz. When Goetz learns of some unsettling rumors about her, he practically begs Clive to confront her about them, and even Clive is hesitant to do it.
  • Everyone Has Standards:
    • Charon is the questgiver for Echoes of the Fallen, informing Clive of the dusk crystals that are circulating in the black market following Twinside's fall. Instead of trying to make any kind of profit off of these weak shards (as Famiel is), Charon decides that it's not worth letting any unknown Mothercrystals go unshattered. She also spent a good amount of her own time and money to acquire a dusk crystal, and offers to both bring it to Harpocrates and call Jill in to help.
  • Eye Scream: She lost her right eye some years ago, and replaced it with a glass one.
  • Gender-Blender Name: "Charon" is the name of a male deity in Classical Mythology. Oddly, despite the hideaway having an actual ferryman in Obolus, he has nothing to do with her. However, in her case the name Charon makes sense, as someone who indirectly sent people to the land of the dead by being an Arms Dealer who sold steel to opposing armies.
    • Echoes of the Fallen furthers the parallels between this Charon and her mythological namesake when she gives Clive the dusk crystal she acquired to find its source Mothercrystal, calling it his "key to the [criminal] underworld".
  • Good Is Not Nice: Despite being in charge of procuring provisions and supplies for the rest of the hideaways, she charges Clive for gil when he asks for supplies for their journey. It isn't just with Clive, either; Goetz's words when Clive arrives at the Hideaway imply she's a terrifying old woman. In one sidequest in the later half of the game, Charon learns that someone is besmirching her name and learns it was the bastard who took her eye. She doesn't kill him, but instead pays him back for what he did to her and takes his eye as recompense.
  • Grumpy Old Woman: Charon is difficult to please and impatient with fools, and no one wants to be on her bad side.
  • Hypocritical Heartwarming: After her questline, Charon admits that she'll often say a bad word regarding Goetz, but will not stand for anyone else doing it. Goetz, for his part, is never offended when Charon does it (implying it's an Insult of Endearment), but gets upset when a stranger does it instead.
  • Never Mess with Granny: When meeting the man who wants vengeance against her, she gets her own vengeance: by carving out his eye as he did to her many years ago.
  • No Hero Discount:
    • Despite ostensibly working for Clive and Cid, she still charges them for her wares. However, she is also one of the hideaway's biggest donors for the cause, so it's implied that most of the money she makes from Clive goes right back into funding their efforts.
    • After her questline, Charon explains that Cid had offered her to sell her wares exclusively to the Hideaway community, whose members would need a steady source of weaponry and gear to protect runaway Bearers.
  • Old Shame: She has a background as a war profiteer, playing both sides in order to maximize her own profits. Cid came across her one day, on the run from the enemies she made those says, and offered her a place in his hideaway. Since then she has abandoned her corrupt ways, though her experience in it still proves useful.
  • Parental Substitute: She is a substitute parent to Goetz, who was mistreated by his parents until she decided to look after him herself, sacrificing a lot of gil to do so.
  • Pet the Dog:
    • She has a soft spot for Torgal and was his primary caretaker in the years before Clive came around; even then, she still takes the time to feed him, and lets Clive know when Torgal starts behaving unusually.
    • She also took Goetz under her wing some time ago, buying him from his parents who mistreated him and watching over him from then on. Judging from speaking with Goetz, Charon lost a lot of gil to do this, yet saw Goetz as worth far more than that amount.
  • Screw Politeness, I'm a Senior!: Charon is likely the oldest person in the hideaway, and never cuts anyone slack. Whenever someone does try to make conversation with her, she briefly humors them before demanding to know what they "really want", since most people go to her for business transactions and not her personality.
  • Suspiciously Similar Substitute: Her role as the snarky Grumpy Old Woman with a fake eye who is, nevertheless, a stalwart ally of the protagonists, brings to mind Matoya from the original Final Fantasy, as well as her incarnation from Final Fantasy XIV.
  • The Team Benefactor: She is perhaps the most independently wealthy of anyone in the hideaway, and she uses her wealth to quietly fill their coffers. Even when Gaute forgets to pay back her loan, she doesn't mind (though she's rather coarse about telling Gaute not to bother).

    Goetz

Voiced by: Rob Falconer (English), Mitsuaki Kanuka (Japanese)Foreign VAs

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/goetz.png

An apprentice to Charon, he travels around Valisthea on various fetch quests, using his massive frame to bring useful items back to the Hideaway.

  • Abusive Parents: The abuse he suffered from his parents was apparently so bad that the unflappable Charon stepped in and rescued him from them.
  • The Apprentice: He is an apprentice to Charon as a merchant, and acts as Clive's shopkeeper when out in the field and Charon cannot join. He later also apprentices to Blackthorne, allowing Clive to forge and reinforce weapons at the same time.
  • The Ditherer: At times, he panics when making decisions and runs to the help of others, largely a result of insecurity and anxiety.
  • Gameplay and Story Integration: Goetz is said to apprentice as a smith with Blackthorne, providing a handy in-universe reason for why he's able to offer blacksmith services as well as merchant services the couple of times he meets Clive out in the field before a major fight.
  • Gentle Giant: He's large and muscular, but he's also not a good fighter, preferring to leave combat to someone more skilled. That said, he would not hesitate to rush to the defense of those he cares about if the situation called for it.
  • Momma's Boy: He adores Charon, who practically raised him after taking him from his abusive parents. He even goes so far as to physically shunt aside a guy attacking Charon with a knife.
    Charon: [shocked] Goetz, you—!
Goetz: [to Bauguin] If you want a piece o' Nan...you'll have to go through me!
  • Number Two: To his beloved "Nan," Charon, who calls him her "right eye."
  • Shout-Out: A blatant Expy of Hodor, both being Gentle Giants with female relatives whom are addressed as "Nan". In his introductory scene, he even carries an unconscious Jill on his back via a chair very similar to the one Hodor used to ferry Bran around.
  • Undying Loyalty: To Charon. Fearful as he is of the old bat, he genuinely likes her and is not happy to hear that someone is slandering her good name in a sidequest. He even threatens to kill the guy spreading lies about her until Charon comes in to dole out punishment herself.
  • Vocal Dissonance: He has a high-pitched voice for someone of his size.

    Blackthorne

Voiced by: Stewart Scudamore (English), Michitake Kikuchi (Japanese)Foreign VAs

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/blackthorne_4.png

The Hideaway's blacksmith, a surly man originally from a Dhalmekian village who is dedicated to the art of his craft, proud of his role and the trust that the Hideaway's fighters have in his work.

  • The Alcoholic: When first meeting Blackthorne, Clive is told to offer him liquor as a gift. Blackthorne groans before capitulating.
  • Always Someone Better: This is the spark for the first three quests he has. He comes across a piece of gear that is beyond what he is capable of making, which causes him to enter a slump until Clive helps him learn more about it. In the first two cases, Blackthorne eventually realizes that whatever went into the piece of gear isn't practical for him to replicatenote , though he is able to apply some of what he learns to his own craft. In the third instance, he learns his old rival Zoltan felt this way about him in regards to smithing weapons and armor, which is why Zoltan switched focus to crafting with fine metals instead.
  • Awesome, but Impractical: Blackthorne considers his focus on making well-crafted and powerful weapons to be horribly impractical for actually running a village like Dravozd, which is why he left it in Zoltan's care. Zoltan eventually admits that Blackthorne had a point in not taking up the mantle of village chief.
  • The Blacksmith: Anytime Clive or anyone needs a weapon or armor forged or fixed, Blackthorne is their man.
  • Grumpy Old Man: Downplayed. He may not be sporting a headful of grey hair, but Blackthorne's blunt and doesn't much like talking to people when he doesn't have to.
  • Hidden Depths: He's actually quite proud of what he does, so when he comes across some work of another master craftsman, he finds himself doubting his own skills, which he recognizes as a problem when others are trusting him to make sure their weapons and armor are in working order. It also makes it difficult for him to be honest with himself, such as when he thanks Clive and August for going to the trouble of helping him by first apologizing for not keeping his own mouth shut.
  • Mythology Gag: He is a reference to Gerolt Blackthorn from Final Fantasy XIV, who is also an alcoholic blacksmith, but Gerolt is more of a comic relief character than this Blackthorne.
  • Perpetual Frowner: Is rarely caught smiling, always having the same dour expression whenever Clive talks to him.
  • Quantity vs. Quality: The Quality to Zoltan's Quantity. He believes that his own obsession with quality made him a terrible choice to lead Dravozd as village chief, as he feels that the town needs to focus on producing cheaper, more practical goods in larger quantities to stay solvent. Working for the Hideaway allows him to instead focus his energies on making quality goods for a relatively small community without needing to worry about turning a profit.
  • The Rival: Zoltan is his rival from his younger days, apprenticed to the same master. They differed in that Blackthorne would spend days crafting one work to make it perfect while Zoltan churned out one imperfect creation after another in order to generate profits. When their master, the previous chief of Dravozd, passed away, he chose Blackthorne to be the new chief. Instead of doing so, Blackthorne ran away from the responsibility and subsequently forced Zoltan to take it, ending with both men holding a bitter grudge toward each other for years.
  • Running Gag: Blackthorne's series of sidequests all revolve around him suffering from a crisis of confidence when he sees someone else's work, with August and Clive becoming increasingly exasperated that this somehow keeps happening.
  • The Stoic: Blackthorne is so stoic and thorny that most people give him a wide berth, but he has a few close friends who can see right through him, like the Cursebreaker August and later Clive.
  • Ultimate Blacksmith:
    • After clearing his personal sidequests, he's able to make the game's Infinity +1 Sword, the Gotterdammerung. In New Game Plus, he makes the sword an Infinity Plus Two by evolving it into the Ultima Weapon. Downplayed in that these weapons were actually formulated from Blackthorne and Zoltan talking about how to make a weapon better than the Ragnarok they were making at the end of the quest chain.

    Midadol "Mid" Telamon

Voiced by: Katie Clarkson-Hill (English), Mai Yamane (Japanese)Foreign VAs

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ff16_mid.png

The daughter of Cid, more commonly known by her nickname "Mid". An engineering student at the University of Kanver, she returns to the Hideaway to assist Clive after the latter reaches his thirties.

  • Break Out the Museum Piece: A variation. When trying to build the fastest ship ever, Mid doesn't (and can't) just repair one of the Fallen's airships. Instead, she takes pieces of their ultra-durable materials to make a hull for the ship she already built stronger than any other.
  • Child Prodigy: She put together the orchestrion when she was around eleven years old, and she did not stop there. She's considered an expert on Fallen technology.
  • Cuddle Bug: While somewhat downplayed, if she's coming at you with a hug in mind, you will get hugged. Doesn't matter how unprepared you may be, or how awkward it may turn out, you will get that bear hug.
  • Deadpan Snarker: She's full of quips, in one of the many ways she takes after dear old dad.
  • The Engineer: Together with her father, she comes up with the designs for the Magitek mythril engines derived from Fallen technology, but she builds them all on her own, directing practically everyone in the Hideaway along with her team of engineers. With these engines, she manages to build the fastest naval ship in the world.
  • Friend to All Children: She goes out of her way to act as a cool older sister to the children of the Hideaway, often teaching them about gadgets and the like.
  • The Gadfly: She likes to push buttons as much as she can get away with; when she meets Byron he's one of her favorite targets.
  • Gadgeteer Genius: She is a talented inventor. The orchestrion in the Hideaway? She made that when she was around eleven to twelve years of age.
  • Genki Girl: She's very excitable and prone to whimsy. Some of the other residents of the Hideaway find it grating.
  • Happily Adopted: Mid's final Active Time Lore entry mentions that she is the adopted daughter of Cid, not his biological child. Regardless, it's made clear that Cid and Mid loved each other unconditionally. The game's Ultimania book says that Cid discovered her abandoned in the wild and took her in himself.
  • Manic Pixie Dream Girl: She checks off nearly every box, and while most examples have singular focuses (like the protagonist), Mid stands out in that her presence brings wonderful chaos to virtually everyone in the Hideaway.
  • Missing Mom: Little mention is made of Mid's mother, but her birth parents in general aren't known.
  • Motor Mouth: When she gets excited enough, her voice noticeably speeds up.
  • Nice Girl: Even when compared to the likes of Joshua and Dion, Mid is a ray of sunshine no matter where she goes. She is never anything less than friendly and chipper to virtually everyone. Some actually find this grating, but she's just too sweet to hold it against her.
  • Plucky Girl: Mid is energetic and outgoing to everyone, though some would argue that she's a bit of a headache because of it.
  • Recurring Element: Mid is a recurring character name throughout the series, often belonging to someone close to or related to the game's respective Cid.
  • Stepford Smiler: She keeps a positive attitude almost the whole game, and only falters when Clive and Otto want her to visit Cid's grave. She comes up with every excuse not to do it, and when they finally get through all of her excuses, Mid slips away before they can bring her.
  • The Un-Hug: She plants an extremely awkward hug on Dion, who seems more perplexed and surprised than anything.
  • The World Is Not Ready: Ultimately gains this belief regarding airships, despite it being her dream to build one, because of their potential to be used in war. She decides that once Clive no longer has need of her Enterprise, she's going to dump all the mythril engines into the Sins of Dzemekys, and leave the plans somewhere hidden for some ambitious treasure hunter or inventor to find sometime in the future, when the world is ready.
  • Wrench Wench: An engineering prodigy.

    Harpocrates II Hyperboreios

Voiced by: Edmund Dehn (English), Osamu Mukai (Japanese)Foreign VAs

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/harpocrates.png

A scholar interested in the myriad history of Valisthea, he's gathering as much knowledge as he can to record it for future generations. Having arrived in Valisthea as a youth, Harpocrates' studies have led to him becoming one of the key experts in Valisthean geography, history, folklore, and religion.

  • Connected All Along: He turns out to have been Prince Dion's tutor at court.
  • Cool Old Guy: He's much older than Clive, but he's still able to quickly befriend the young man and has banter with him about his adventures.
  • Foreshadowing: His past as a scholar from the Holy Empire of Sanbreque, and a tutor to Prince Dion Lesage, is obliquely referred to in his dialogue with Clive, in which he can bring up locations within the Empire's original territory that Clive never visits in the game. He also makes a comment about not needing to be a "court astrologer to augur the obvious", the kind of profession that was only seen in cutscenes in the Empire, where one such astrologer spoke with Emperor Sylvestre.
  • History with Celebrity: His teacher and the one who led him to his strong interest in history was Moss the Chronicler, a renowned scholar for his records about the realms, traditions and practices of Valisthea.
  • In-Series Nickname: On the account of his rather long name, many people call him "Tomes" due to him being surrounded by them. Only Clive regularly uses his first name.
  • My Greatest Failure: One of his biggest regrets is not being there for Dion when he needed a friend, and not just a tutor. The two are able to reunite when the latter comes to the hideaway.
  • The Smart Guy: A role he shares in the hideaway with Vivian. He is the one they go to whenever they need to know about legends, lore, and lost knowledge.
  • Tagalong Chronicler: While he doesn't actually travel with Clive much, he uses every opportunity he can to chronicle the adventures in his journal. Fittingly he, like the party members and guests, has a 16-bit sprite.
  • Tears of Joy: Harpocrates cries in celebration when Clive gives him the news of Kupka's death.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Kupo nuts. According to the children in the Hideaway, he frequently nicks them off of Nektar when the furball isn't looking. Tomes...doesn't deny this, and given his exasperation at Torgal helping himself to his stash, it's probably true.

    Vivian Ninetales

Voiced by: Lara Sawalha (English), Yuki Anando (Japanese)Foreign VAs

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ff16_vivian.png

A scholar and strategist who makes her home in the Hideaway. Originally from the Crystalline Dominion, she used to be an instructor at the University of Kanver, until her dogged pursuit of scholarly truths led some of her less scrupulous colleagues to make an attempt on her life. With the help of one of her students, Mid, she flees to the Hideaway and becomes a dedicated ally to Clive, helping him to understand the state of the realm.

  • Elite School Means Elite Brain: She taught at the prestigious University of Kanver and her intelligence is valued highly by the hideaway.
  • Gentleman and a Scholar: She is the female version of one. She is impeccably dressed and implied to come from high society, always offering intelligent and erudite conversation. She is implied to be older than much of the cast, and has gray hair, but her actual age is pretty unclear. While admitting to being a bit socially inept, she is never anything but kind.
  • Intelligence Equals Isolation: Vivian confesses to Clive that she has always felt separate from everyone else on account of her intelligence and the way she tends to think, and it isn't until coming to the hideaway that she begins to feel a sense of belonging.
  • Ms. Exposition: Her main role is essentially to explain the current state of affairs of Valisthea to Clive and the player by extension.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Normally, Vivian is pretty aloof regarding her homeland of Twinside, even after the Empire subjugated it as its new capital, and later after its destruction in Prince Dion's attempted coup. So it's notable that the scholar has a somewhat bitter response to the question of why the "Origin" Mothercrystal is referred to as such, since its appearance completely wiped Twinside and the Dominion from the map.
  • The Professor: A former professor at the University of Kanver who easily takes on the same role within the hideaway (though not for the children, but rather Clive and anyone who needs an update on the state of the realm). She even refers to her conversations with Clive as "classes."
  • The Smart Guy: A role she shares in the hideaway with Harpocrates. Vivian is the one who knows all about the realm's politics and current events, explaining any historical context needed for Clive and the others to understand why leaders are acting the way they are. In gameplay, she gives the player access to a map of the factions' movements over the course of the story, as well as a web of the important characters that Clive encoubters (the Grand Cast)
  • The Strategist: Vivian has the role of strategist at the Hideaway, helping Clive plan his next course of action.
  • This Is Gonna Suck: She sighs with irritation and laments Mid moving into the hideaway full time as she knows from then on she will never know quiet again. Even so, she does care a lot for Mid.
  • Tin Man: Clive and Otto seem to think the enigmatic Vivian is one of these, but she reveals a more empathetic and sentimental side to her; for example, she advises Clive to let the original Cid's associates (Blackthorne, Charon, and Harpocrates) know that Hugo Kupka is dead, knowing that they might need to hear it in order for everyone to heal.

    Nektar

Voiced by: N/A

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/nektar_final_fantasy_16.png

A curious Moogle who has left the safety of the forest behind to keep Cid and the rest of the Bearers company. He mans (Moogles?) the bounty board in the Hideaway, keeping track of all of the Notorious Marks that prowl the lands, as well as the ones Clive has slain.

  • Deadpan Snarker: He has a pretty big mouth, for such a tiny mouth. He's easily the snarkiest character after Cid.
  • Hero of Another Story: At one point he claims that he's been on some fantastical escapades himself. ...Except, of course, that he didn't. Those tiny little wings aren't meant for long-distance adventuring! Still, it is a curious tale of how he wound up in Cid's service to begin with.
  • Miles Gloriosus: Nektar happily brags to Clive all about his brave adventures, vastly exaggerating them.
  • Motor Mouth: Upon learning that Clive can understand him, he becomes quite the conversationalist!
  • Ridiculously Cute Critter: Most Moogles in the franchise fall into this, but even so, Nektar is ridiculously adorable. His whimsical design also makes him stand out quite a bit in the otherwise dark and gritty world of Valisthea.
  • Speaking Simlish: He speaks exclusively in Moogletongue, which to just about everyone, is a series of cute noises. Only Clive can understand him.
  • Unusually Uninteresting Sight: Nektar himself. In Valisthea, Moogles are thought to be nothing more than mythical fairies of the forest, with not one person having set eyes on one in centuries - supposedly. Not only is Nektar hanging around the Hideaway, he's a regular fixture of it, working together with the Cursebreakers in keeping the Twins safe from especially vicious monsters. For their part, the rest of the Hideaway casually treats him as one of their own.
  • Verbal Tic: As a Moogle he has one of these, kupo.
  • "Wanted!" Poster: It's his job to update the bounty board with fresh posters of the latest Notorious Marks, as well as ones who have already been slain. It's a crucial task!

    Obolus

Voiced by:

An old boatman and friend of Otto's. He serves as the ferryman to the Hideaway across the lake of Bennumere using his boat, the Argo.

  • The Ferryman: His primary role is ferrying people to and from the Hideaway.
  • In the Hood: Obolus is only ever seen wearing his hood up, contributing to his "old ferryman" look.
  • Meaningful Name: His name is a reference to Charon's obol, the payment for crossing the River Styx in Greek mythology.

    Gaute

Voiced by: Benjamin O'Mahony (English), Daisuke Nezu (Japanese)Foreign VAs

Otto's assistant, tasked with keeping the ledgers sorted and the Cursebreakers' reports up to date. His strongest feature is his ability to read, but his competence leaves room for improvement.

  • The Ditz: He's Otto's bookkeeper and keeps track of side quests for Clive throughout the regions, purely for his ability to read. He doesn't have the head for it, though, and at one point fails to notice that they've incurred debts from their trusted lenders in the millions of gil that he forgot to pay back.
  • I Owe You My Life: He is completely devoted to Otto due to him picking Gaute off the street when his master beat him bloody and left him to die and bringing him to the Hideaway.

    Desiree

Voiced by: Laura Aikman (English), Kaoru Sakura (Japanese)Foreign VAs

A Bearer in the Hideaway who Otto taught to read. She is eager to help by keeping up with the realm's gossip, and in terms of gameplay she keeps track of the renown board, letting Clive retrieve rewards for the various people he helps around Valisthea.

  • Gossipy Hens: Desiree has the job of keeping up with all the realm's gossip, which functions as keeping track of Clive's fame levels and any packages of gratitude sent his way for helping to keep the realm safe.

The Cursebreakers

The Cursebreakers are a named unit of fighters operating out of the hideaway, made up exclusively of Bearers who go out into the world on perilous missions to free other Bearers and bring them back to safety. As it is rare for Bearers to have any kind of combat training under their old masters, their numbers are few.

Captain of the Cursebreakers. She is an experienced warrior and freed Bearer driven to protect the Cursebreakers who serve under her and free other Bearers from their lives of slavery and injustice.

  • Abusive Parents: When she was a child, her owner was like a mother to her, and raised Dorys to be a deadly weapon against all of her enemies. Dorys has complicated feelings toward the woman but is grateful to be strong and scrupulous enough now to free other Bearers.
  • Action Girl: An experienced Cursebreaker who was raised as a weapon, captain of the Hideaway's primary fighting force.
  • Lady of War: She has the bearing of one—distinguished, noble-hearted, and experienced.
  • Martial Pacifist: Her Active Time Lore entry states that Dorys actually hates fighting, and will only draw steel as a last resort.
  • A Mother to Her Men: Dorys looks after all of the Cursebreakers who serve her and puts their wellbeing even at the expense of her own.
  • "Shaggy Dog" Story: Her personal sidequest series ends this way. She does not get justice against her former master, and when she learns that her dear friend who has been raised alongside her, Chadwick, is being held in the Balmung Dark, she rushes all the way to Ash to go rescue him. Once there, she learns that he died in a Heroic Sacrifice to distract a fearsome behemoth being held there in order to save the other prisoners... but by the time Clive and Dorys get there, there's only one survivor left. Granted, they do get to save the young girl from certain death, and Dorys does find closure of a sort when she accepts that his noble actions managed to save the girl's life.
  • This Is Something He's Got to Do Himself: When she learns of the Balmung Dark, a prison for Bearers in Ash, she tells Clive that she needs to go despite how he has forbidden anyone from going there. Eventually he settles on letting her go with him so she can free the Bearers, especially someone from her past that she once considered her brother.
  • Tyke Bomb: She was raised to know both the blade and the books, the perfect weapon for her "mother," a slaver.

Second-in-command of the Cursebreakers. He is a Bearer and former member of the Fist of the Republic who helps coordinate the efforts to free other Bearers.

  • Number Two: To Dorys, his captain. He shows concern for her whenever she puts the wellbeing of the Cursebreakers above her own, and asks Clive for his help in getting her to trust the rest of them more.

    August

Voiced by: Harry McEntire (English)

A Cursebreaker who is friends with Blackthorne, he often tries to keep the surly blacksmith's spirits up.

  • Best Friend: He considered Blackthorne to be his, and by the end of Blackthorne's side quest series, it is implied that the feeling is mutual.
  • Chronic Hero Syndrome: He feels constantly compelled to help Blackthorne, even if it involves throwing himself head-first into trouble.

    Ember

Voiced by:

A new recruit to the Cursebreakers that Clive has to take out onto a training mission. He looks up to Gav and wishes to join him as a scout in the field, which is considerably more dangerous than the other Cursebreaker jobs.

  • Cowardly Lion: He completely shuts down when faced with real enemies on his training mission with Clive. Clive handles them before Ember comes to harm, but Ember disappears in the fighting. Clive assumes he ran back to safety in town, but later learns that Ember completed the objective.
  • Hero Worship: He looks up to Gav and wants to be a scout like him. To a lesser extent, he also greatly admires Clive.
  • New Meat: Ember is a new member to the Cursebreakers and the hideaway as a whole. Clive takes him out on one training mission to see how he would do as a scout.
