Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense
  • Badass Normal: Sure, there are more than one member with supernatural powers, but most of its agents are regular people who risk their lives to protect humanity and the world from the supernatural.
  • Extranormal Institute: The Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense, as the name suggests, studies and fights against paranormal threats.
  • Jurisdiction Friction: There's obviously some friction between the B.P.R.D. and DEO's Shadowpact, with Shadowpact working for the government while the Bureau has remained mostly independent. No word yet of what they think of Dark Justice and the Creature Commandos.
  • Occult Detective: A whole organization of them.
  • The Remnant: The founding members of the Bureau were surviving members of the American Men of Letters who survived a purge by demon cultists in 1970.
  • Two Guys and a Girl: Hellboy, Abe and Liz have this type of dynamic and are considered the best team in the B.P.R.D.

In 1944, U.S. soldiers discovered an infant demon with a giant stone hand and named him Hellboy. Later founding the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense, Hellboy became the world's greatest paranormal investigator. Soon after, it was revealed that he was born to summon the apocalypse but has instead devoted his life to fighting evil forces.

  • Action Dad: Father of the twins Brigette and Trevor James "T.J." Bruttenholm and one of the strongest cambions around.
  • Amusingly Awful Aim: Though he loves guns, Hellboy's accuracy leaves something to be desired. Despite his considerable vision and years of practice, he just barely passes the BPRD's annual firearms qualifications. He believes he was born right-handed and the Right Hand of Doom is poorly designed for use of with firearms. Related to this, Hellboy's handwriting is awful, he has trouble using smartphones and most modern technology; and he often comes across as clumsy and less-than-dexterous.
  • An Arm and a Leg: He was born with a normal right arm, but shortly after his birth, his father cut his right arm off and replaced it with the Right Hand of Doom.
  • Anti-Anti-Christ: During Hell on Earth, his father and sister tried to use him to destroy the world as Anung Un Rama, but he refused.
  • Apocalypse Maiden: He's prophesied to bring about the end of the universe. But being the Anti Anti Christ, he's not on board with all of that malarkey.
  • Arranged Marriage: He was arranged to be married to Ruby/Inanna, and they're technically still betrothed, but he's already in a relationship with Liz.
  • Artifact of Doom: The appropriately named Right Hand of Doom, which is incredibly powerful and nigh-indestructible.
  • Badass Longcoat: His trenchcoat that's part of his uniform.
  • Best Friend: His best friend is Abe Sapien.
  • Carpet of Virility: In B.R.P.D. uniform his hairy chest is on full display.
  • Cigar Chomper: As seen in his casual picture, Hellboy likes his cigars.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: Despite having horns and being half-demon, Hellboy is an utterly regular, decent, rather noble blue-collar guy, who doesn't have much patience for people telling him he should be evil.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Hellboy has a very dry sense of humor and has a habit of snarking at his enemies.
  • Distracted by the Sexy: Hellboy can "act his age" when he needs to focus, but still has a stunted maturity, particularly in regards to sex. Beautiful women can easily manipulate him.
  • Family Eye Resemblance: Has the same Supernatural Gold Eyes as his father Azazel.
  • Friend to All Children: Even before becoming a father, he's really soft-hearted and friendly towards children.
  • Gentle Giant: Hellboy stands at 6'11"/2.11m tall and is gentle with children, even sometimes when it's against his better judgment.
  • Good Old Fisticuffs: Hellboy is an expert hand-to-hand combatant, though he is highly trained, he often relies more on his powers than actual skill until he "gets serious".
  • Gun Nut: Hellboy loves guns. He has several special guns which he has named.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: Hellboy's temper often gets the better of him. Though he does not always lash out with violence directly, his anger often leads him to act out like a petulant teenager when he feels slighted or stressed beyond his ability to cope.
  • Happily Adopted: By Professor Broom.
  • Hero-Worshipper: He was a major fan of the Watchmen movement and was sad the Keene Act banned super heroics. He was especially fond of The Lobster.
  • Hidden Depths: He's a big fan of old superheroes and collects old comic books as well as vinyl records.
  • Horned Humanoid: The horns on his forehead, which he files down to dissimulate his already notorious appearance.
  • Huge Guy, Tiny Girl: Liz is actually pretty tall herself, but Red towers over her.
  • Human-Demon Hybrid: His mother was the witch Sarah Hughes while his father is the devil Azazel.
  • Human Popsicle: More like Half-Human Popsicle, but he was sealed in a frozen part of Hell for centuries until Belphegor stirred him and allowed his summoning to Earth.
  • I Have Many Names: Anung Un Rama, Horatio Bruttenholm, Destroyer of Worlds, Urush An Rama.
  • Immune to Fire: He's fireproof, which he uses to his advantage when fighting other demons that aren't so resistant and which also helps his relationship with his pyrokinetic girlfriend-turned-wife.
  • In-Series Nickname: Brother Red, Big Red, Dacci Ab Jura, Great Beast of Revelation, H.B., Red, Red Right Hand, Right Hand of Doom, Rosie.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He's gloomy, sarcastic, abrasive, and not much of a people person but beneath he's a big softy who genuinely cares about people and their safety.
  • Kind Hearted Cat Lover: Hellboy adores cats and they love him right back.
  • Manly Facial Hair: A goatee, and he sure is manly with his exposed muscular chest, cigar smoking and love of guns, accompanied by some Hot Blooded Sideburns.
  • Meaningful Name: His mother Sarah Hughes named him Anung Un Rama, which roughly translates from Enochian as "and upon his brow is set a crown of flame".
  • Named After Somebody Famous: Prof. Broom named him Horatio since he reminded him of the horns of the character Horatio Hornblower.
  • Named by the Adaptation: In the comics he didn't have a human alias, but here Prof. Broom gave him the name Horatio Bruttenholm.
  • No-Sell: Hellboy appears to be completely impervious to fire and electricity, whether mundane or magical in origin. He is also highly resistant to infernal magic, essentially immune except against spells crafted to affect him specifically.
  • No Shirt, Long Jacket: He doesn't bother using a shirt underneath his B.P.R.D. trenchcoat.
  • Occult Detective: Hellboy is a master paranormal investigator and exorcist. He is also an expert occult ritualist, wardsmith, bindwright, and summoner.
  • Official Couple: Married to Liz Sherman.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: Despite having a human name, he's almost always referred to as Hellboy or just Red.
  • One of the Kids: He's just as giddy as his kids at the prospect of meeting and helping Santa Claus.
  • Orc Raised by Elves: Basically a baby Antichrist raised by good humans to be a hero.
  • The Power of Love: When Liz ended in a coma for a year after accidentally bringing Roger to life, Hellboy confessed his feelings for her, which made Liz wake up and then began dating. Later when Hellboy was about to bring the end of the world as Anung Un Rama, Liz brought him back to his senses by revealing to him that he was going to be a father.
  • Proportional Aging: He might have been born over 300 years ago, but due to being freed from stasis during the 1940s, he's technically only in his early thirties despite growing for over seventy years thanks to his nature as a Cambion.
  • Red Is Heroic: Red skinned and he fights to protect the world from all sorts of supernatural threats.
  • Red Is Violent: Yes, he is a good guy but his red skin is a good reminder of his temper and how he can get violent.
  • Related in the Adaptation: Being the son of Azazel makes him the half brother of Naamah and of Asa, one half of the Nightmare Nurse.
  • Super-Senses: Hellboy's sight, devoid of obstacles and other interferences, seems only limited by his focus and the horizon. Similarly, Hellboy never has difficulty seeing in the dark. As a supernatural creature, Hellboy can also see, hear, and interact with astral travelers, ephemeral beings, and ghosts. Hellboy is also sensitive to the presence of magical and psychic phenomena, able to detect these through his horns — though this sensitivity is diminished considerably as he files his horns down.
  • Super-Strength: Although the true extent of his strength in unclear, Hellboy has proven he has the capacity to toss large monsters, uproot and hurl trees, and overturn cars. However, it should be noted that during the events of Hell on Earth, while under the spell of the Infernal Host, Hellboy's strength rivaled that of Trigon.
  • Super-Toughness: Hellboy is able to withstand wounds that would be fatal to ordinary humans. He can also recover from these injuries at an incredible rate. He has been shown to withstand great impact forces, high-caliber bullets, exposure to extremes of both temperatures, and falls from great heights. It is worth noting that even when he is not visibly injured, Hellboy often still feels a degree of pain.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: His favorite food for breakfast are pancakes with syrup.
  • Trenchcoat Brigade: Wears a trenchcoat as part of his B.R.P.D. uniform and he sure likes his cigars.

    Elizabeth "Liz" Sherman

Click for Civilian Look

A member of the B.P.R.D. who has a fire entity living inside of her. Mastery of this fire as a weapon is her specialty. Wife of Hellboy and mother of their children.

  • Action Mom: Mother of Brigette and T.J. Bruttenholm and one of the most powerful fire users in the world.
  • Affectionate Nickname: Liz and Sparky.
  • The Ageless: Since the binding with the entity from the Burn, Liz does not appear to age or suffer the effects of aging. She also does not usually succumb to most common diseases or illness. It is possible she has a form of immortality, but time will tell.
  • Best Friend: Her best friend is Carla Giarocco.
  • Birds of a Feather: She and Hellboy first bonded thanks to their mutual love of grunge music and the fact that both were fireproof.
  • Canon Welding: The force within her that gives her powers is The Burn, one of the intrinsic fields of the universe.
  • Code Name: Her Ops Moniker is Firecracker.
  • Collared by Fashion: Wears a collar with a black cross in it.
  • Cool Shades: Wears them while in B.P.R.D. uniform.
  • Conspicuous Gloves: Wears black gloves as part of her uniform.
  • Drunk with Power: Liz find the use of her powers to be cathartic to the point of even being addictive. Constant use of her pyrokinetic ability can cause her to "lose herself in the flames", becoming more prone to irrational thought and dangerous behavior.
  • Everyone Went to School Together: She's a former classmate of Clark Kent, who saved her from the fire that killed her family. Their friendship wouldn't last, though, due to the second incident that led to her ending up in B.R.P.D. custody.
  • Eye Color Change: Her once green eyes turned orange when her powers first manifested.
  • Famous Ancestor: She's a descendant of the Celtic goddess Brig, wife of Gabriel and mother of Imogen.
  • Fiery Redhead: Has auburn hair, fire powers and her temper can get the better of her if she's not careful.
  • Finger-Snap Lighter: Liz Sherman uses her pyrokinesis to light her cigarettes on occasion.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: Liz is also known to have a volatile temper, particularly when she is unable to resolve a desperate situation, continually fails to perform what she deems to be a simple task, or is in pain without a reasonable means to stop her suffering.
  • Heroic Host: Liz has a symbiotic relationship with a mysterious entity of the Burn that has bound itself to her soul for mutual benefit. This primal being has a will of its own. but it is not sentient (at least as we understand sentience). It can communicate with Liz through telepathic impulses - but usually is in a state of quiet slumber in the depths of Liz's mind, possibly using Liz to incubate or recover its strength.
  • Mundane Utility: Liz lighting her cigarettes with pyrokinesis.
  • New Media Are Evil: She prefers to have face-to-face or phone conversations and is convinced social media are a digital plague.
  • Official Couple: Married to Hellboy.
  • Older Than They Look: She's almost 40 yet still appears in her early twenties thanks to her status as the Avatar of The Burn.
  • Playing with Fire: Liz has a fantastic ability to mentally create, shape, control, generate and manipulate every form of fire including its accompanying heat, light, and various reaction products - such as the flame and smoke. Liz can also control the temperature of the fire at will. By tapping into the Burn, Liz can mentally generate fire, projecting flames from her hands or having it surround her body.
    • Immune to Fire: Unsurprisingly, Liz is immune to fire, heat, and smoke. This includes the ability to breathe smoke without affecting her respiration. She is also extremely resistant to cold environments as her internal temperature needs little regulation.
  • Power at a Price: The entity which resides inside Liz is directly bound to her soul. As such, use of her powers in a exhaustive manner can cause her to become faint or ill. Similarly, release of the entity from her body, whether by choice or by force will cause Liz to succumb to a debilitating fatigue as she slowly wastes away.
  • Power Incontinence: Liz's powers are extremely volatile and are capable of a significant and measure of destruction. If Liz fails to keep her emotions in check, she could accidentally cause massive amounts of death and destruction in an instant.
  • The Power of Love: When she ended up in a coma in The Burn for a year, Hellboy confessed his feelings for her and she awoke, reciprocating his feelings. And when Hellboy nearly destroyed the world as Anung Un Rama, she brought him back by revealing he was going to be a father.
  • Supernatural Sensitivity: Liz is able to see, hear, and interact with beings on the astral plane, un-manifested ephemeral entities, and invisible spirits such as ghosts. She is also sensitive to intrinsic and psychic phenomena.
  • Statuesque Stunner: Stands at 5'11"/180cm tall and she's quite beautiful.
  • Survival Mantra: The fire is not my enemy, it is a part of me, it is mine.
  • Traumatic Superpower Awakening: Her powers manifested when she was only ten years old during a heated argument with her parents, and they blew up their family house, killing her parents and younger brother. It would happen again when she was 17 during a party at her family's farmhouse, this time killing 32 people.
  • Wreathed in Flames: Anytime she really cuts loose with her powers, she tends to manifest an aura of fire all around her body.

    Abraham "Abe" Sapien
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/abe_sapien_bprd_earth_27.jpg
Click for Civilian Look

An aquatic life form, Abe Sapien was found in a tank of water with a note bearing the date April 14, 1865 (the day Abraham Lincoln was assassinated) and the words "Icthyo Sapien". Abe is a leading field agent of the B.P.R.D. and the best friend of Hellboy.

  • Adaptation Origin Connection: He's the one who gave the cure to Nina Mazursky that saved her life but also turned her into a fish person.
  • Best Friend: Abe and Hellboy are best friends.
  • Blue Is Heroic: Has blue skin, his nickname is Blue and he's a pretty friendly guy once you get to know him.
  • Code Name: His Ops moniker is Amphibian Man.
  • The Empath: Abe can sense the emotions of those around him. With concentration, he can even assert specific emotions on others, influencing their behavior. He can easily manipulate the emotions of animals, particularly aquatic creatures.
  • Endearingly Dorky: Zanoni the elf certainly finds his awkwardness endearing.
  • Expy Coexistence: Nina Mazursky from the Creature Commandos was created as an expy of Abe and both exist on the same continuity and have a connected origin.
  • Fish People: One of the best known examples in popular culture. Abe has a fairly unique physiology that resembles those of some Atlantean mutants. He may be a modern example of Atlantis' early attempts to adapt to life underwater.
  • Healing Factor: Abe heals at remarkable rates and can even recover lost limbs and organs if he can rest in moist environments. His regenerative nature has also stalled his aging. Though he is over two-hundred years old, he is still in prime condition.
  • Honorary Uncle: He's the godfather of Brigette and TJ Bruttenholm.
  • Identity Amnesia: At first, but investigating his past led to Abe remembering his past life.
  • In-Series Nickname: Blue, Brother Blue, Fish Man, Fishsticks.
  • Jedi Mind Trick: Abe has the ability to disrupt memory chains and upper brain functions on a living organism. This can be used to make concentration difficult, cause an aggressive person to become docile, or render them unconscious. Particularly weak-minded persons or those with compromised brain chemistry.
  • Logical Weakness: Abe finds it difficult to function with dry gills. He is severely impaired in arid environments without the use of his hydro-collar.
  • The Lost Lenore: His wife Edith Howard, who committed suicide years after his disappearance, only to later return as a Vengeful Ghost when Abe and Hellboy visited her grave.
  • Omnidisciplinary Scientist: Abe has a genius intellect that was heightened by his transformation. In his past as Langdon Caul, Abe was a world-class medical doctor, chemist, and biologist. Though his schooling is a bit outdated, he has since mostly caught up on modern practices.
  • The Ophelia: Caul's wife Edith Howard always had an unstable psyche. But after he disappeared, she went mad and drowned herself.
  • Prefers Going Barefoot: Abe wears boots as part of his uniform, but when casually hanging out at the BPRD or lounging in his tank, he goes about shirtless and barefoot.
  • Pride: Abe may come across as a bit of a snob when around those who are not familiar with his intellect and cultured personality. Abe takes failure rather hard, particular when others are relying on him to solve a problem with his intelligence.
  • Really 700 Years Old: He was born at the end of the 18th Century, and due to being in stasis since the onset of the American Civil War and his new nature as a fish person, he remains on his prime despite being over 200 years old.
  • Sensor Character: Abe can trace subjects by their psychic signature. This ability allows him to pinpoint the exact location of a specific person he is familiar with within fifty yards. He can trace where a target has been recently, with more powerful psionics leaving their psychic residue on a area for longer than ordinary persons.
  • Species Surname: Abe's last name is "Sapien" and his species is known as "Ichthyo Sapien"
  • Stronger Than They Look: Abe is stronger than his build suggests, with dense muscles. He is roughly as strong as an athletic human bodybuilder in peak condition.
  • Super Swimming Skills: Abe is a talented swimmer, with a natural affinity for water, He can swim underwater at rates upwards of a 100 MPH (160 kph) under ideal conditions, though he prefers to swim at a slower pace.
  • That Man Is Dead: Born Langdon Everett Caul, while it took him several decades, he has finally accepted his new life as Abraham Sapien.
  • Touch Telepathy: Though touch, Abe can obtain historical memories or sensations. If triggered when handling an object, Abe may gain the knowledge of its makers, previous users, or insight to what may have been done with it. If triggered through personal contact, Abe might relive one of their recent or more potent memories.
  • Walking Shirtless Scene: Doesn't wear a shirt in his casual look.
  • Was Once a Man: Once a regular man, Abe in a moment of desperation to save his life from a terminal lung condition, grafted the organ of a mysterious sea creature hoping it would cure him, and while it did cure him, it also turned him into an Ichthyo sapien.

    Johann Kraus
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/johann_kraus_earth_27.jpg

A prominent psychic medium whose body was destroyed during the Manhattaning. No one really knows what happened, but Johann sought after the B.P.R.D. for help.

  • Adaptation Origin Connection: The incident that caused the loss of his body and turned him into an ectoplasmic entity was the Manhattaning.
  • Astral Projection: Johann can shift his ectoplasmic form into astral energy, allowing him to navigate the astral plane. He can revert to his ectoplasmic form at will, allowing him to use this ability to cover great distances in a short amount of time.
  • The Blank: Due to lacking a body, his suit doesn't have a face.
  • Code Name: His Ops Moniker is Snowglobe.
  • Containment Clothing: Johann's current suit is the fourth incarnation of the hardware originally designed by Trevor Bruttenholm. It is designed to give Johann more utility in the field with several onboard forensic sensors. It can be depressurized almost instantly but also allows controlled leaks. The suit is partially mechanized, giving Johann its immense strength while operating it, but in tandem with its onboard A.I., the suit can also be programmed to move on its own (to follow Johann or other BPRD agents, meet Johann at a second location, or simply return to the nearest BPRD safehouse).
  • Gratuitous German: Only when he gets angry or upset.
  • Has a Type: Johann has a weakness for blondes.
  • I Have Many Names: Ectoplasmic Man, Fish Bowl, Glasshat, Glasshole.
  • Immortality: Without a body of his own, Johann does not age or suffers the rigoes aging or disease. His incorporeal mind does not appear to deteriorate either. He may be functionally immortal, but that has yet to be determined.
  • I See Dead People: Ever since he was young, Johann was able to see and interact with ghosts.
  • The Lost Lenore: His wife Ilse Kraus was trapped in a pocket dimension only accessible through a broken mirror by his former mentor Ilsa Haupstein, and he hasn't been able to move on from that.
  • Our Ghosts Are Different: Johann isn't technically dead. He just doesn't have a body anymore. Though Johann is usually operating an external apparatus, such as his containment suit, a corpse, or an object, his natural form is a gaseous white cloud of supercharged ectoplasm.
  • The Needless: Johann also has no need to eat or drink, does not require to sleep, and is basically immune to damage.
  • Police Psychic: Even before joining the B.P.R.D., Johann was considered to be an expert philosopher, parapsychologist, and general occult lore. Since joining the B.P.R.D. and gaining access to their archives, Johann has become a world-class authority in these fields.
  • Psychic Powers: His Teleplasty. Johann has the ability to inhabit soulless bodies or inanimate objects. This differs from possession as Johann's presence cannot cohabit with an existing soul, nor can he dominate or evict a soul bound to the apparatus he is attempting to occupy. When melded with a body or object, Johann is able to integrate his mind and use the capabilities of his chosen housing.
  • Sensory Overload: Johann has a sixth sense, but he lacks other senses - namely touch, taste, and smell. When afforded the chance to partake in these lost senses, Johann can become overwhelmed to the point of becoming unfocused or severely distracted.
  • Supernatural Sensitivity: Johann is able to see, hear, and interact with beings on the astral plane, un-manifested ephemeral entities, and invisible spirits such as ghosts. He is also sensitive to intrinsic and psychic phenomena.
  • Unresolved Sexual Tension: While he has feelings for Kate Corrigan, unresolved guilt concerning his wife Ilse keeps him from a proper relationship, which only frustrates him even more.

    Prof. Trevor Bruttenholm
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/trevor_bruttenholm_earth_27.jpg

Founding member of the B.R.P.D. and its director until his mysterious disappearance in 1989. Adoptive father of Hellboy and grandfather of his children.

  • Actor Allusion: Being related to Adam Sutler, leader of the Norsefire party, references that both characters were played by John Hurt.
  • Alcoholic Parent: His father Arthur Bruttenholm turned into a drunk due to the tragic death of his wife.
  • Big Good: As head of the B.P.R.D. until he disappeared.
  • Cool Old Guy: Already old by the time of his disappearance, he was still very cool.
  • Cool Uncle: His uncle Simon Bruttenholm not only funded his education, he also inducted him into the supernatural, even if Trevor didn't share the O.A.M.'s more sinister goals.
  • Disappeared Dad: For Hellboy, going missing without a trace for almost three decades.
  • Good Parents: Hellboy quickly endeared himself to a younger Broom, and he named and adopted him so he wouldn't be seen as property by any government. Hellboy was his son, no matter what.
  • Fatherly Scientist: He adopted Hellboy after he was summoned into this world.
  • In-Series Nickname: Broom.
  • Missing Mom: His mother Euphegenia died shortly after giving birth to him.
  • Parental Substitute: For Hellboy, being the one who found him and raised him like his own son.
  • The Professor: His actual profession and was more than knowledgable about the paranormal.
  • Related in the Adaptation: Through his mother Euphegenia Sutler he's related to England's dictator Adam Sutler.
  • Team Member in the Adaptation: He's a former member of the Men of Letters and Team 6.

    Capt. Ben Daimio
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ben_daimio__brpd___earth_27__commission_by_phil_cho_det03d6_pre.jpg
Click for Werejaguar Look
A former U.S. Marine, Captain Benjamin Daimio is the Field Team Commander of the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense since 1996.
  • Absurdly Sharp Claws: Werejaguar's claws and teeth can rend just about anything: fabric, wood, cinder block, and even steel.
  • Adaptational Attractiveness: His scars aren't as gruesome as in the comics and he doesn't have a Glasgow Grin.
  • The Ageless: While werejaguars may continue to age for a time after they've been bitten, most tend to stop aging somewhere between the age of twenty-five and forty-five. Regardless of when they stop aging, werejaguars possess bodies that are not affected by common disease or ailments associated with aging.
  • Cursed with Awesome: Unlike in canon where he could not control the beast, while it took him several years, he mastered his curse as a were-jaguar and now he can use it for the benefit of the B.P.R.D.
  • Curtains Match the Window: Has black hair and eyes as a human and has yellow eyes and yellow fur in jaguar form.
  • Empowered Badass Normal: Ben is an exceptional soldier whose talent is only amplified by his transformation into a supernatural creature. He is a master marksman, an excellent strategist and world-class hand-to-hand and close-quarters combatant.
  • Famous Ancestor: More like infamous, but his grandmother Yumiko Daimio was an Axis Agent, witch and member of the League of Assassins known as the Crimson Lotus, who helped capture, torture and kill hundreds of American troops until she was apprehended by The Comedian.
  • Full-Frontal Assault: Takes off his clothes when transforming into a werejaguar. Luckily Non-Humans Lack Attributes so nothing is exposed.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: Even before his 'incident' Ben was angry and violent. He has gotten better, but he'd still rather punch someone before he would talk about his feelings.
  • Healing Factor: Werejaguars regenerate rapidly, recovering lost limbs or removed organs within a day of rest. Ben's healing is even more effective when he is in his human form. Notably, Ben's facial scars and damaged ear are not affected by this ability as these injuries were caused by the injury that initially turned him.
  • In-Series Nickname: Ben, Benny, Scarface and Whiskers.
  • Involuntary Shapeshifting: Ben has to transform during the night of the full moon. Even during the daylight hours under a full moon, Ben will be on edge and can easily transform without intention of doing so. When transformed during a full moon, Ben will not be able to revert to human form until the beast's hunger has been satisfied (usually requiring the spilling of blood) or several hours passed.
  • Like Father, Like Son: He joined the US Marines just like his father Max Daimio, mostly so he could empathize and better bond with his shell-shocked father.
  • Lunacy: While this transformation is usually mandatory on the nights before and after a full moon, as well the night of, Ben's strict military discipline allows him to transform at any time, including during daylight hours. That said, his transformation often comes at the cost of much of his own sentience, losing much to his inner beast.
  • Meaningful Name: His Ops Moniker is 'Nekojin', which means "Cat-Person" in Japanese.
  • Morphic Resonance: His scars and hairstyle remain even in Werejaguar mode.
  • Nigh-Invulnerability: Werejaguars cannot be harmed by conventional weapons. Only a silver bullet of magic can pierce a werejaguar's flesh.
  • One Degree of Separation: Not only The Comedian apprehended his grandmother Yumiko during WWII, his father Masaru Daimio served in Vietnam as a helicopter pilot with Eddie Blake.
  • Our Werebeasts Are Different: Captain Daimio is a were-jaguar. As with most therianthropes, werejaguars' powers wax and wane during the lunar cycle (being at their most potent the closer the moon is to the phase of the Full Moon and at their weakest near the New Moon).
  • Related in the Adaptation: Through his father Masaru "Max" Daimio, he's the cousin of Eiko Hasigawa of Gotham's Yakuza, and through his mother Himari Okamura he's the cousin of Hiro Okamura/Toymaster of the Titans.
  • Scars Are Forever: The scar on his face from the werejaguar that turned him is the only scar that has never healed.
  • Super-Senses: Werejaguars have incredibly acute senses of sight, smell and hearing even outside of their transformed state. Ben can even see part of the infrared spectrum, giving him remarkable night-vision.
  • Team Member in the Adaptation: He's a former member of I.O.'s (International Operations) secret Team 7, until he was dismissed for disagreeing with a superior.
  • Weaksauce Weakness: Like all werecreatures, Ben is vulnerable to silver weapons. Even touching them is harmful for him.

    Thomas "Tom" Manning
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tom_manning_earth_27.jpg

Doctor Thomas Alvin Manning used to be Director of Field Operations before passing the position along to colleague Kate Corrigan. He has a rocky relationship with Hellboy as the two don't always see eye to eye. Dr. Manning is currently head of the BPRD.

  • Faint in Shock: He literally fainted the very first time he met Hellboy.
  • Feeling Their Age: Manning is no spring chicken. He is not easily able to to participate in field work.
  • Happily Adopted: Adopted Allison shortly after a mission in Japan which costed the lives of her biological parents.
  • Heroic BSoD: Since the death of his son and resulting divorce, stress can overwhelm Manning. Unable to cope with life when he is thus encumbered by stress, Manning may retreat to his office, a nearby bathroom, or other safe space for long periods of time to compose himself.
  • Inadequate Inheritor: Nearly everyone at the Bureau thinks Manning is not as good as Prof. Broom, due to being more of a bureaucrat rather than an actual paranormal investigator.
  • Not That Kind of Doctor: Manning holds a juris doctorate degree. He is a fully accredited attorney, able to practice law in multiple jurisdictions.
  • Parents as People: Despite loving his children, he regrets agreeing with his wife to send Alvin/Wanda to "therapy programs", and although he can't see his daughters often, he still strives to call them twice a week.
  • Pride: Manning believes he is a very important man and finds it difficult to be reminded that others do not always share his belief. When disrespected, especially in front of others, Manning often reacts in a impulsive or vindictive manner. On the other hand, those willing to praise Manning or stroke his ego will find themselves able to acquire favorable treatment.
  • Obstructive Bureaucrat: Has this reputation with Hellboy and some of the looser B.P.R.D. agents.
  • Outliving One's Offspring: His son Jonathan Manning was killed in Khandaq in 2007.
  • Related in the Adaptation: He's the biological father of Wanda Mann and Jonathan Manning, and the adoptive father of Allison Mann (she changed her last name in solidarity for her sister). His ex-wife is Patricia Grace, a member of Checkmate in the comics.
  • Seen It All: Manning has little fear of that which goes bump in the night, having seen many such creatures being killed by his subordinates and dissected in front of him.
  • Stage Fright: He is camera shy. Manning does not care for being recorded, even to the point of letting his discomfort distract him, causing him to confuse his thinking and flub his speech.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: By benching Hellboy and sending Ben Daimio on a mission to the South American jungle without enough intel ended up leading to Ben being mauled, almost killed and turned into a were-jaguar.
  • You Are in Command Now: Became the acting director of the B.R.P.D. after the disappearance of Professor Bruttenholm.

    Katherine "Kate" Corrigan

Member of the B.P.R.D. and friend to Hellboy, she is also the liaison between the B.P.R.D agents with "gifts" and everybody else.

  • Adaptation Relationship Overhaul: Instead of being Amicable Exes with Hellboy, here they are Like Brother and Sister.
  • Adaptation Species Change: Normal human in the comics, part angel here.
  • The Ageless: Kate appears to have stopped aging around the age of twenty-seven. Furthermore, she rarely succumbs to most common diseases or illness.
  • Affectionate Nickname: Kate, Katie, Kay, Kay-Kay and Kiki.
  • The Apprentice: Used to be Prof. Bruttenholm's apprentice until his disappearance.
  • Code Name: Hers is Pageturner.
  • Curiosity Is a Crapshoot: Kate tends to obsess over the acquisition of knowledge. When something sparks her interest, she is rarely able to leave anything related to it as a mystery.
  • Fights Like a Normal: Her angel heritage doesn't give her any advantages while fighting, as such thanks to her training she's very skilled in martial arts and in the use of firearms.
  • Geek: Kate Corrigan is an occult/mythology geek (it was her day job before she joined the B.P.R.D.).
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: Blonde haired and is a very nice person.
  • The Heart: She doesn't mind being the glue that keeps the BPRD together and gets along pretty well with all the agents.
  • Honorary Aunt: She's the godmother of Hellboy and Liz's children.
  • Kryptonite Factor: Infernal energy and magic causes Kate significant discomfort, particularly when she is directly targeted by its effect.
  • Older Than They Look: She's 50 yet still looks 27 after her aging stopped.
  • The Professor: Much like her mentor, that's her official title. Kate is considered to be among the world's leading experts in anthropology, particularly in regards to mythology, ancient and modern religious texts, and various folklore. Kate is also considered to be among the world's leading experts in all manner of paranormal phenomena.
  • Related in the Adaptation: She's the daughter of Jim Corrigan, the first host of The Spectre, and of his wife Gwendolyn "Gwen" Sterling.
  • The Smart Girl: Kate is a natural genius. She has an exceptional memory, bordering on eidetic. Kate is also a speed-reader. She has also demonstrated the ability to 'program' her brain similar to a computer, proven when she taught herself to be ambidextrous and learned to have perfect pitch.
  • Team Mom: At first she was this for the special agents, then the entire bureau.
  • Uneven Hybrid: Kate is mostly human, however her father was possessed by a disembodied angel during her conception, making her roughly ¼ angel.
  • Unresolved Sexual Tension: She and Johann are interested in each other, but his unresolved guilt towards his wife has prevented their relationship from becoming something more.

    Roger the Homunculus
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/roger_the_homunculus_earth_27.jpg

A Homunculus created by Karl Ruprecht Kroenen in the 1940s using tissue samples from Frankenstein's Monster to serve as spare body for Rasputin. After spending decades in stasis, he was found and accidentally brought to life by Liz Sherman.

  • A Mind Is a Terrible Thing to Read: Roger has a transient access to Liz's memories. As a result, at times, he can relive portions of her traumatic past — often causing him to have a strong reaction.
  • All-Loving Hero: Roger chooses to see the best in people and always has an optimistic view of life.
  • Artificial Human: As a homunculus, he's obviously this, brought to life by Liz's "spark".
  • Big Eater: Roger enjoys eating, drinking, and partaking in a variety of new experiences. Though he does not require these things, he feels "incomplete" without them. If kept from them, he may became detached and bitter, even hostile.
  • The Big Guy: Alongside Hellboy he's one of the strongest agents in the B.P.R.D.
  • Black Eyes of Evil: Subverted. He might have black sclerae and orange eyes, but he's a pretty nice guy.
  • Energy Absorption: Roger lacks a heart. Instead, he has an essence engine built into his chest that can absorb the essence from other sources — including living beings. Attacks with raw, unrefined essence against Roger will be impaired by the engine absorbing the essence quickly. Similarly, the engine will consume the essence of spells cast against Roger, causing decrease duration and/or effect.
  • Fatal Flaw: Roger is naive. He looks upon the world with a sense of wonder, similar to the perspective of a positive child. He can easily be tricked by deception.
  • Immortality: Roger does not age or become ill with common disease.
  • Immune to Fire: Roger is immune to fire, heat, and smoke. This includes the ability to breathe smoke without affecting his respiration. He is also extremely resistant to cold environments as his infernal temperature needs little regulation.
  • The Needless: Roger does not need to eat, sleep, or drink provided he is in any essence-rich environment. Assuming he has had a chance to fully charge and exerts himself minimally, Roger can operate on little food, water and rest for weeks at a time. He can also shut himself down, going into a hibernative trance that allow him to survive with very little required to sustain life. Roger has no need to breathe as he respires essence rather than oxygen, similar to many ephemeral beings.
  • Odd Friendship: He's the best friend of the brooding Ben Daimio.
  • Playing with Fire: Roger has a mild ability to mentally generate fire. With great effort, he can project a tongue of flame from his chest. He can also draw fire and smoke into his essence engine without causing any disruption to his bodily functions.
  • Prefers Going Barefoot: Adaptational Modesty gives him pants, but still no shirt, and no shoes.
  • Psychic Link: Roger has an empathic anchor to Liz Sherman. He has a general sense of her location in relation to his own, can sense her emotional state and if she is healthy or injured. He can also use this anchor to give him the strength or resolve to protect Liz in times of desperation.
  • Walking Shirtless Scene: Wears pants but not a shirt.
