Hidden Sand Village

Team Shinki

    Shinki

Shinki

Voiced by: Yūto Uemura (JP), Nicolas Roye (EN)

Debut: Boruto Chapter 3 (Manga), Boruto: Naruto the Movie (Anime)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/shinki3.jpg

A genin of the Sand village who enters the chunin exams. He is Gaara's adopted son. Like the Third Kazekage before him he can use the Iron Sand technique.

  • The Ace: He was trained by Gaara to control his Iron Sand jutsus. In time, he came to be considered the ace of his village, and during the Chunin Exams he managed to beat even exceptional genins like Chocho, Sarada and Boruto, though the latter cheats in order to gain the battle. He gained even the admiration of the five Kages.
  • Advertised Extra: Both Shinki and his team were advertised along with the Konoha kids as being a major part of the chunin exams in Boruto: The Movie. But they actually only appear for a few seconds, with no background on their characters. However, he's featured a lot more in the movie than his other two teammates and gets in a line or two.
  • Adaptation Expansion: In the anime adaption of the movie, Shinki has been featured far more prominently, and has had several interactions with Boruto, expressing interest in him as a fellow son of a Kage, albeit an adopted one.
  • Arrogant Kung-Fu Guy: Being Gaara's son and The Ace made Shinki very arrogant and prone to insult his opponents, especially if he deems them beneath him. However, if there is indeed an opponent with potential, Shinki will show off a competitive side.
  • Black Cloak: He wears one made from Iron Sand, which can spread out to fulfill various purposes. He uses this sand to save himself and his teammates during the first day of the Chunnin Exam, win against Metal Lee during the second day of the Chunnin Exam and win against Chocho during the third day of the Chunnin Exam.
  • Caring Gardener: A hobby he shares with his adoptive father and uncle, who both enjoy cultivating cacti and other desert plants.
  • Creepy Monotone: He speaks on a low voice with little intonations. Being adopted by Gaara probably helps too.
  • Dem Bones: His puppet is a demonic looking skeleton.
  • Facial Markings: Just like Kankurō, Shinki sports face paint, which takes the shape of two red ヲ wo markings that are similar to designs on Gaara's Sand Gourd.
  • Flechette Storm: A favored tactic of his is firing spikes of iron shrapnel at his enemies.
  • Giant Hands of Doom: According to Gaara, his favorite Jutsu is Black Iron Fist which makes gigantic arms out of Iron Sand.
  • Happily Adopted: He's quite close to his adoptive father and uncle, always acts respectful towards them, and even shares Gaara's love of gardening.
  • Homing Projectile: One of his specialties is leaving a magnetized mark of iron sand on an enemy and using it to attract his other attacks.
  • Jerkass: He's extremely rude and dismissive to his opponents; before his match with Chocho he even mocks her because her parents will have to watch her humiliating defeat. He later dismisses Mitsuki's jutsus as mere magic tricks.
  • Magnetism Manipulation: He wields the Iron Sand with the Magnet Release. Using this principle he can make a unavoidable piercing spear of Iron Sand by marking enemies and using attractive forces to direct it.
  • Marionette Master: He is a wielder of the Sand Village's signature puppet ninjutsu, although his puppet has a specific purpose that he doesn't use as much for direct combat.
  • Not Quite Flight: He can ferry himself by levitating iron sand.
  • Offscreen Moment of Awesome: He's briefly seen defeating two of the new generation from Konoha in the Chunnin Exams: Metal Lee and Chocho. Subverted in the anime, which shows the fights in full (though they're not very long regardless).
  • One-Steve Limit: Averted, he’s unrelated to the demon from Ultimate Ninja Heroes 3.
  • Power Gives You Wings: For his ultimate technique he can make wings from his iron sand to sustain flight, with them he can fire metal Feather Flechettes.
  • Real Men Wear Pink: According to supplementary material, his hobbies are gardening and embroidery.
  • Slasher Smile: In the anime, during his fight with Chocho he flashes one of these.
  • The Stoic: Shinki is just as talkative as Gaara was at his age.
  • This Means Warpaint: Much like Kankuro before him, he has traditional bunraku face paint on.
  • Warrior Prince: Due to him being the adoptive son of the Fifth Kazekage and the grandson of the Fourth.
  • "Well Done, Son" Guy: A lot of his contempt towards the other Chuunin Exam competitors is because Gaara tells him not to underestimate them, which he interprets as Gaara underestimating him.

    Yodo

Yodo

Voiced by: Aoi Inase (JP), Melissa Fahn (EN)

Debut: Boruto Chapter 3 (Manga), Boruto: Naruto the Movie (Anime)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/yodo0.jpg

A female genin of the Sand village who enters the chunin exams.

  • Advertised Extra: She's featured in promotional pictures for the movie, but doesn't do anything of substance. This is generally averted in the anime where she is a bit more fleshed out.
  • Blow You Away: Her main attack jutsu has her use her hair as a medium for launching a cutting wave of air and sound at the enemy.
  • Generation Xerox: She faces Shikadai Nara in the third round of the Chunin Exams off-screen. A Nara boy facing a sand village kunoichi, who is blonde, in the Chunin Exams? Hmm, wonder where that will lead? Though unlike Temari before her, she loses her fight.
  • In the Hood: She wears one over her head.
  • Headphones Equal Isolation: She is often reprimanded by her superiors for listening to music with her headphones over the people around her. Its later revealed that due to her super hearing that she listens to music to avoid Sensory Overload.
  • Japanese Delinquents: Kishimoto said he wanted to draw Yodo as a punk-like girl.
  • Super-Hearing: She has extremely acute hearing and from it she has a form of Combat Clairvoyance.
  • The Worf Effect: The novel seems to suggest she is perhaps the strongest and most talented on her team. So when Shikadai is said to have easily defeated her, it only hyped his character up and showed how strong he was before his fight with Boruto.

    Araya

Araya

Voiced by: Junji Iki (JP), Catero Colbert (EN)

A genin of the Sand village who enters the chunin exams.

  • Advertised Extra: He's featured in promotional pictures for the movie but doesn't do anything of substance. This is generally averted in the anime where he is a bit more fleshed out.
  • BFS His main weapon is a very long sword that he keeps on his back.
  • Body Double: Of a sort, he often uses a puppet that looks exactly like him in place of himself.
  • Cool Mask: He wears a demon mask that Inojin criticizes as too flashy.
  • Marionette Master: He is actually a master of puppet jutsu.
  • Nervous Wreck: He panics when being watched by others, so he uses a puppet while he can hide from the limelight.
  • Offscreen Moment of Awesome: He defeats Inojin to move on in the chuunin exams. But the fight is never shown. This is averted in the anime adaptation where his match with Inojin is shown in full and he has another full fight with Sarada.
  • Robotic Reveal: Its revealed that he often uses a puppet that looks exactly like him to fight while he hides nearby.
  • The Quiet One: He rarely ever speaks.
  • Sheath Strike: He wields a long sword that he keeps sheathed on his back, but when fighting Inojin he doesn't bother to draw the blade and takes him out with the sword still in its scabbard.
  • Swiss-Army Weapon: His sword is long enough to use as a staff when sheathed and the sheath even has a hidden blade so it can be used as a spear.

Hidden Cloud Village

Team Yurui

    Yurui

Yurui

Voiced by: Kengo Kawanishi (JP), Bryce Papenbrook (EN), Benjamín Rivera (Latin America, Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 4)

Debut: Boruto Chapter 3 (Manga), Boruto: Naruto the Movie (Anime)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/yurui.jpg

A genin of the Cloud Village who enters the same chunin exam as Boruto and friends.

  • Advertised Extra: Both Yurui and his team were advertised along with the Konoha kids as being a major part of the chunin exams in Boruto: The Movie. But they actually only appear for a few seconds, with no background on their characters. Yurui though recieves the most screentime getting to fight and get beat by Boruto.
  • Bubblegum Popping: The basis of his ninjutsu is creating explosives using bubblegum as a medium.
  • Cool Sword: He wields a pair of them into battle.
  • Facial Markings: He has the same bull horn tattoo on his cheek as Killer Bee.
  • Floating in a Bubble: Or rather on top of a bubble to transport himself, but he can also trap enemies in them as one of the many uses of his bubblegum ninjutsu.
  • Having a Blast: Yurui's power is to create explosions with chewing gum bubbles.
  • Pride Before a Fall: Yurui is shown to be extremely arrogant in the movie and looks down on Konoha ninja. It's fitting that he loses against Boruto for underestimating him, even if Boruto did cheat.
  • Sticky Situation: One of the uses for his gum is to bind enemies with large sticky wads of it.

    Tarui

Hidden Mist Village

    Kagura Karatachi

Kagura Karatachi

Voiced by: Keisuke Komoto (JP) Bryce Papenbrook (EN)

Debut: Boruto Episode 25 (Anime)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/latest_14.png

Chunin assigned to take care of Boruto's class during their school trip to the Hidden Mist Village. He works an aide to the sixth Mizukage and one of the candidates to inherit his sword Hiramekarei and become one of the Seven Swordsmen of the Mist. He also happens to be the grandson of the fourth Mizukage Yagura Karatachi who's trying his best to avoid his grandfather's heritage.

  • The Ace: One of the best shinobi in the Mist village. He qualifies to be one of the Seven Ninja Swordsmen of the Mist and is a strong contender to be the next Mizukage.
  • Alliterative Name: Kagura Karatachi
  • Berserk Button: In a sense. Getting into a heated swordfight awakens his grandfather's bloodlust in him causing him to go out of control.
  • Blue Blood: Is the grandson of Yagura Karatachi, the Fourth Mizukage.
  • Broken Pedestal: The revelation Chojuro might be eliminating dissidents who interfere with his plans to modernize the village shatters his faith in his mentor and friend. Later subverted when he learns that Shizuma was lying to him all along and his faith is restored.
  • The Bus Came Back: When team makes their second trip to the Hidden Mist Village for theirmission, Boruto visits him in a prison where he temporary works as a guard.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: He hurt and killed others during his academy days, something that continues to haunt him.
  • Doesn't Like Swords: Avoids using a sword since he fears that it'll awaken his bloodlust.
  • Facial Markings: Has a mark below his left eye.
  • Face–Heel Turn: Succumbs to Shizuma's lure and joins his new group of Seven Ninja Swordsmen of the Mist as the wielder of Hiramekarei. Later Subverted when Boruto brings him to his senses and Shizuma admits that he was using Kagura for nefarious reasons.
  • Friendless Background: Didn't have any friends at the academy due to his bloodlust, which makes it easier to Shizuma to influence him and why his friendship with Boruto is so important to him.
  • Heroic Lineage: The grandson of the Fourth Mizukage Yagura Karatachi. Zigzagged when most remember Yagura as a savage monster who reigned as a brutal tyrant. Yagura was actually a heroic, kind man who was mind-controlled into being evil by Tobi.
  • Killed Off for Real: He's killed by the Funato pirates, as he goes down swinging against them trying to protect his team and friends. Many tears were shed at his funeral.
  • Master Swordsman: Kagura is noted to be a peerless swordsman but fears wielding a proper one will awaken his bloodlust.
  • Morph Weapon: Hiramekarei, which he's set to inherit from the 6th Mizukage.
  • My Greatest Failure: Believes he's unworthy of greatness thanks to his latent, hereditary bloodlust after he lost control during a sparring match.
  • Nice Guy: Kagura is a gentle, very pleasant fellow who's polite to everyone he meets normally. It's this trait that ultimately redeems Buntan, Kyohō and Hebiichigo, as he constantly fights for their freedom and sticks up for their characters.
  • Number Two: Chojuro considers Kagura his right hand.
  • Princely Young Man: Kagura is an exceptional swordsman, is the right-hand man to Choujuro, the Sixth Mizukage, and is the grandson of Yagura Karatachi, the Fourth Mizukage.
  • Rags to Riches: He states in episode 27 that the only way to avoid poverty in the Hidden Mist during his childhood was to become a shinobi, which he is.
  • Sins of the Father: It’s implied that part of the reason why he had a Friendless Background is because of his biological ties to his grandfather Yagura.
  • Villainous Lineage: He greatly fears bloodlust and cruelty are in the Karatachi bloodline.
  • Wooden Katanas Are Even Better: Averted, The katana he is armed with is made of wood, but it is quickly splintered when Kagura gets in a real fight, putting him at a severe disadvantage.

    Buntan Kurosuki

Buntan Kurosuki

Voiced by: Mariya Ise (JP), Carrie Keranen (EN)

Debut: Boruto Episode 28

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/uub3zaog_400x400.jpg

Daughter of Raiga Kurosuki, the previous holder of Kiba. She was in a relationship with Shizuma, until this comes to a bitter end when Shizuma heartlessly betrays her to make his escape, earning her scorn. She forms a new team with Kyohō and Hebiichigo, hoping to help the Mist Village deal with the Funato pirate group in exchange for freedom and forgiveness of her past crimes.

  • Abusive Parents: It's insinuated that Raiga was never really around as a husband, and we know from the anime that he was a bad dude who suffered a Karmic Death. Butan's mother is said to have a very unpleasant relationship with her daughter because of the grudge she holds towards Raiga for being a deadbeat, which has driven Buntan to turn renegade.
  • Ascended Extra: Shows up again during the "Great Sea Battle of Kirigakure" Arc, playing a major role in helping the heroes deal with the threat of the Funato pirate group.
  • Character Development: Goes from a rebelling blood thirsty brat to a mature thoughtful young woman, proud to serve her village. She also learns about the folly of pursuing revenge and abandons her grudge against her former boyfriend, Shizuma.
  • The Lancer: To Shizuma. She later moves on when Shizuma proves himself to be an irredeemable scumbag, becoming this trope to Kagura instead.
  • Dark Action Girl: To her credit, she actually appears to be decent in using her sword, unlike most of the group, and gives a decent fight on her own. Loses the "dark" part when she joins the side of the heroes.
  • Designated Girl Fight: With Sarada during the Field Trip arc.
  • Dual Wielding: Wields Kiba, which is actually two separate swords.
  • Earn Your Happy Ending: By the end of the Funato Arc, she's acquitted of her crimes, becomes a better person and goes on to work for the Mist Village full time as a shinobi. She also abandons her vengeful mindset against Shizuma, noting that he shouldn't dictate how the rest of her life should play out and decides instead to arrest him should she ever meet him again.
  • Heel–Face Turn: The "Great Sea Battle of Kirigakure" Arc has her and her teammates slowly undergo this as they work with the Konoha shinobi.
  • Hidden Depths: She's actually quite adept at healing ninjutsu, curing Kawaki of his sea sickness.
  • Like Father, Like Daughter: Follows in her father's footsteps by debuting in the anime.
  • Meaningful Name: As with the rest of the new seven swordsmen, her name comes from a kind of fruit, specifically the Pomelo (Buntan in Japanese).
  • Pet the Dog: Comforts Hebiichigo by hugging her while she is crying over Kagura's death.
  • The Rival: Towards Sarada. Both are at odds with one another ever since their first fight but soon learn to appreciate one another and work together as a team. This newfound teamwork with one another reminds fans of the relationship between Itachi and Kisame; an Uchiha Konoha shinobi and Mist Swordsman shinobi working well as a duo. Buntan even suggests that Sarada take over as captain after Kagura's death, mirroring how Kisame usually defers to Itachi's decisions in any given situation.
  • Shock and Awe: As the current wielder of Kiba, she uses the twin swords' ability to generate lightning. However, she has an extra ability that lets her manipulate the swords through remote control.
  • Token Competent Minion: She is actually more competent than her boss given she had a solo fight with an Uchiha.
  • Undying Loyalty: She is this towards Shizuma, until his betrayal. She later feels this towards her teammates, especially Kagura.
  • When She Smiles: By the end of the Funato arc, Buntan's development as a shinobi allows her to smile genuinely.
  • Woman Scorned: Buntan intends to hunt down and kill Shizuma for abandoning her in jail after she is acquitted of her crimes. She abandons this mindset when she realizes that Shizuma is not worth the effort and instead desires to capture him for justice's sake.

    Kyohō Fuefuki

Kyohō Fuefuki

Voiced by: Yasuhiro Mamiya (JP), Mick Wingert (EN)

Debut: Boruto Episode 28

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/latest_904.png

Resident big guy of the group. Wields the giant ax and hammer Kabutowari. He forms a new team with Buntan and Hebiichigo, hoping to help the Mist Village deal with the Funato pirate group in exchange for freedom and forgiveness of his past crimes.

  • Ascended Extra: Shows up again during the "Great Sea Battle of Kirigakure" Arc, playing a major role in helping the heroes deal with the threat of the Funato pirate group.
  • The Berserker: Kyohō flies into a rage when he sees blood shed, attacking friend and foe alike. Though this is a result of the blood shed reminding him of his own dark past.
  • Calling Your Attacks: Deconstructed. Hassaku calls him out on how stupid it is, since doing so lets a tied up Chōjūrō easily avoid his attack.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: When he was younger, he was unfortunately a victim of a raid conducted by the Funato pirates. The resulting bloodshed and horror he witnessed that day stunted his mentality, resulting in current manner of speech.
  • Dumb Muscle: Not very bright or skilled, but has some decent muscle to use. His slow speech is due to his past dealings with the Funato pirate group...
  • Earn Your Happy Ending: By the end of the Funato Arc, he's acquitted of his crimes, becomes a better person, overcomes his dark past with the Funato pirates and decides to stay in Kagura's village as its protector, finally achieving inner peace.
  • Heel–Face Turn: The "Great Sea Battle of Kirigakure" Arc has him and his teammates slowly undergo this as they work with the Konoha shinobi.
  • Hidden Depths: Once you get past Kyohō and his anger, he's actually quite shy and friendly with people.
  • I Choose to Stay: Decides to live out his remaining years in Kagura's village, becoming its protector.
  • Manly Tears: Sheds these at Kagura's death. He does it again when Hebiichigo dies as well.
  • Meaningful Name: As with the rest of the new seven swordsmen, his name comes from a kind of fruit - the Kyoho, a type of grape.
  • When He Smiles: Gives a friendly and genuine smile towards people he likes and those who are kind to him.

    Hebiichigo

Hebiichigo

Voiced by: Nao Tōyama (JP), Erin Fitzgerald (EN)

Debut: Boruto Episode 28

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/341365.jpg

A creepy looking girl who comes into possession of the Nuibari when the group steals the swords. She forms a new team with Kyohō and Buntan, hoping to help the Mist Village deal with the Funato pirate group in exchange for freedom and forgiveness of her past crimes.

  • Ascended Extra: Shows up again during the "Great Sea Battle of Kirigakure" Arc, playing a major role in helping the heroes deal with the threat of the Funato pirate group.
  • Ax-Crazy: A little too eager about using her sword on her victims. Later this is downplayed in future appearances.
  • Bittersweet Ending: By the end of the Funato arc Hebiichigo tragically dies against the Funato pirates but manages to find inner peace for herself, learns to treasure and prioritize others over herself and is posthumously forgiven for her past crimes. She's even buried next to Kagura at his home village.
  • Character Development: Of the three swordsman in Kagura's new team, she receives the most development, learning to prioritize others over herself and grow to care for her teammates and friends. She even comes to regret her past heinous actions.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: She reveals to Metal that as a child, she grew up near a trash heap, scrounging through the area for anything of value she could use to survive. Her hobby of sewing was looked down upon by others, lowering her own self-worth. One day, a Rogue Ninja stumbled upon her and nearly killed her; desperate, she managed to kill her attacker with a nearby pole. This grabbed the attention of other Kiri-nin, who praised her for the deed. Realizing that killing was one of her strong points, she then took up the bloody path of the shinobi.
  • Deadly Nosebleed: Using the Nuibari's strings to hold someone stronger than her causes her chakra levels to dip below dangerous levels, invoking nosebleeds and a weakened defense. A strong enough blow can end up killing her as a result, which sadly ends up happening.
  • Elegant Gothic Lolita: Or at least as close to one as can be while still wearing a shinobi uniform.
  • Friend to All Children: Hebiichigo is kind to kids, offering her food to them when they were hungry.
  • Go Out with a Smile: She gives her teammates, and especially Metal, this type of smile as she passes away from her injuries. She makes sure that with her last breath, she thanks Metal for bringing back the kind disposition she had as a child that she thought she lost.
  • Hates Being Touched: Despite her cruel and savage nature, she is also shown to have a strong sense of self-preservation, desperately working to avoid any physical contact with her enemy. Chōjūrō mocks that she can't expect to actually become a powerful ninja if she is too afraid to bleed a bit in a fight, demonstrating by tearing himself free of their trap despite the wounds it causes him. Her past reveals that being attacked by a rogue ninja while she was a child instilled this fear.
  • Heel–Face Turn: The "Great Sea Battle of Kirigakure" Arc has her and her teammates slowly undergo this as they work with the Konoha shinobi.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: She dies following the Funato's pirates second assault against Kagura's village, using her weapon to hold the boss enemy in place long enough to allow her friends to deal the final blow, which unfortunately leaves her open to attack.
  • Hidden Depths: Once you get past her appearance and blood thirstiness, Hebiichigo can be pretty friendly and shy towards others. Kyohō suggests that she's actually lonely and appreciates companionship. She enjoys sewing in her spare time, fixing Metal's pants when they were torn.
  • It's All About Me: Hebiichigo values her own life above all else, only risking it if it benefits her greatly. When she learns that the Mist Village may only give her and her teammates a reduced sentence instead of a full pardon, she tries to murder Kagura in an attempt to escape. Luckily she fails. Later, she comes to regret her actions, slowly growing out of this trope. She abandons this trope completely when she gives her life for her friends.
  • Meaningful Name: As with the rest of the new seven swordsmen, her name comes from a fruit, specifically a strawberry-like fruit called "hebiichigo".
  • My God, What Have I Done?: She later comes to regret betraying Kagura and abandoning her team, saying that she's not worthy of forgiveness, despite Kagura insisting that she isn't a monster.
  • Only One Name: Is the only one of her group to not have a surname.
  • Redemption Equals Death: How she feels at the end of her life, happy that she at least made up for her negative actions by invoking this trope and saving her friends.
  • Ship Tease: Has this with Metal Lee of all people. They even work well as a tag team, providing Metal with foot holds to use and attack enemies from due to her Nuibari's strings.
  • Together in Death: She's buried next to Kagura's grave, under his favorite tree.
  • What You Are in the Dark: Despite abandoning her team, she couldn't go through with fully running away, remembering her positive experiences with them and comes back to help them fight the Funato pirates.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: Metal invokes this trope with her, comforting Hebiichigo when she voices out loud that she is merely good at killing, citing that she's also good at sewing and that her hidden kindness is a virtue.
