As your friendly neighborhood Admin Team, the gang here at TVTropes HQ is always working to improve the site.
Many of those improvements begin with suggestions posted right here, on the Community Wishlist. Is there a feature you really want on TVTropes? Post it.
Is there something we could be doing better? We want to know. Do you think we look fat in these pants? We were totally afraid of that. See a bug? Report it.
Important things to know:
- We're all about that content-creation life! The top contenders for our attention are ideas that'll create more content, like the video uploading feature, or speed up launching new pages. On the flip side, design or layout tweaks won't be our top priority.
- Help us dig through the goldmine of old wishlist items! If you have an old request gathering dust or spot one you're totally on board with, give it a bump and a like. There's a treasure trove of 6+ years' worth of ideas just waiting to be rediscovered. Items without enough love may not make the cut and will be closed.
- Was your wishlist item locked up without an explanation? It was most likely disapproved or just too big of a task versus the benefit it would ultimately have. Time is precious, and we want to focus on updates with the biggest bang for the buck. Don't be discouraged though! We appreciate every idea and we're always listening.
Make a Tech Wish:
openlink to full page history in notifier
Notifiers now link to the edit they're about. Which is great! However, the links don't work if the edit isn't in the 15 most recent ones for the page. They need &more=t added in the URL before the #[edit number] part to work.
openA confirmation pop-up when logging out
I keep accidentally logging out when trying to check my messages or visit my profile. All it takes is a single misclick.
A pop-up to confirm would be all that's needed to prevent accidental log-outs.
openA way to encourage editors to link to work pages
More and more I'm seeing users not linking to works when they add examples or potholing it to another related work or removing links or even even linking it to The Other Wiki/IMDB when the work doesn't have a page yet, something that goes against the Tips for Editing and Red Link. It makes it very hard to find any links when a page is created especially when the title is generic phrase or word like Undead or The Amazing Spider-Man tv series
It may need it's own notifier and/or a site wide announcement or something
On a related note, several users are not using namespaces for work links since they still appear blue, so that might need their own notifier/announcement/whatever - Now wrong namespace appears as red
openQuick find page for editing
I wonder if we have or could have a "quick find" or "cheat sheet" that would list how to do things when editing.
I've used these in RL when learning a new computer system, and it would be very helpful to have all the special mark-up punctuation things in one place.
I recently tried a search in Administrivia for "how do I italicize?" and came up with an article discussing when to italicize in articles and a pointer to general RL style guides. Not on point for what I really wanted, not a quick answer.
Just one reference sheet with curly brackets for single word titles, double square brackets fore and aft for this result, two apostrophes for that result, an example of CamelCase, etc.
Does this make sense?
Have I overlooked one you do have now?
Thank you for listening. (I will now plan to read more Administrivia articles.)
openPM bans allow read-only privileges
From what I've gathered, PM-banned users are unable to view their messages. It seems that it would make more sense to allow them to read but not send PMs.
openLink markup that excludes beginning of the page name
You know how the curly braces can be used to exclude part of a page name from being displayed? The given on the administrivia has for example, Administrivia/{{Renamed Trope|s}} displays "Renamed Trope" while linking to Renamed Tropes. This only works to exclude the latter part of the name. I want to be able do something similar, but with the beginning part of the page name. This would be easily used for work names that have subtitles. Say there is a work FranchiseName with an installment FranchiseNameSequelSubtitle. If I want to just display just Sequel Subtitle in the link I have to do something like [[FranchiseNameSequelSubtitle Sequel Subtitle]]. Basically I want a markup something like {{FranchiseName:Sequel Subtitle}}.
closed A quick way to only include the ending of a trope name
So you know how we can use curly brackets and vertical lines to use only the first part of a trope name? Like {{Ship|ping}} to Ship? Can we do that with ends of trope names? Since we can't make redirects without article names, it would just be a lot more efficient to have a shorthand to exclude the first part of a trope name.
Edited by mightymewtronclosedPreview button for edited posts
I want to have a preview button for edited posts. Imagine this, you're typing out a 6 paragraph post. Later, you want to add another paragraph to your published post. The paragraph will require formatting. You want to see if your post will reflect what you want readers of your now edited post to see. But, there's no edit button. So now you have to post your un-checked post. And what if you forgot to add three single quotient mark on your ''italics' or misspelled a trope name? This is why we need a preview button for edited posts.
openImage Pickin' uploader
Make it so the uploader can be accessed on Image Pickin so we don't have to go to a page to upload files. This apparently used to be the case before the 1.8 update, but was removed for some reason.
openCrowner Example
Whenever I click the Edit Example or the Example History of every Crowner entry on a new tab, it still leads to the Crowner page.
With so much Bibble Bobble on the crowners, may the Crowner example menu be fixed so we could edit the Bibble Bobbles without hassle?
openIssue Helper: First Person Writing
I'm trying to message a troper, and the issue on First-Person Writing is not there. Since there are some tropers who still use first-person writing on wiki pages (excluding the Darth and Sugar wiki pages), and there's a thread on cleaning up on this, will this issue helper be brought back with this message?
Please and thank you.
openAllow some video examples to be over 150 seconds long, if the moderators give permission first.
I do understand that a limit is needed most of the time but the problem is that there are great video examples of some tropes but they exceed 150 seconds. For example the movie Rio has a great example of the trope Bookends (The trope where the beginning and ending of a story are tied together somehow) but it is unfortunately 3 minutes and 21 seconds in length and there is no way I could shorten the video without it looking wrong.
Edited by Pokemon439openautomatically set page type of Creator/ pages to Creator
Automatically set page type of Creator/ pages to Creator upon creation.
Edited by TwiddleropenAllow for other people's videos to be added to certain pages
Without editing any of the actual content of the video or its affiliated tropes, it'd be cool to crosswick videos to pages like recaps, character sheets, and so on. (if this is already possible feel free to correct me)
Edited by IkeaHanclosed Allow tropers to edit and remove others' video examples.
Allow tropers to edit and remove others' video examples to edit videos that:
1. Don't demonstrate the trope correctly or don't demonstrate it at all, but still got approved somehow.
2. Have an extremely lengthy or inaccurate description. Or the description has lots of spelling/grammar mistakes in it.
3. Are uploaded to the wrong trope, or have a ridiculous number of media sources, or even none.
4. Have low quality, or looks like it was recorded on a device then uploaded and can be replaced with a better version, but still got approved somehow.
Basically, please allow tropers to edit and improve video examples just like trope pages.
openMake crowner history visible on the thread, even after the crowner is closed
This is mostly due to the Bibble Bobble nonsense rendering recent TRS crowners nonsensical. Some crowners with this issue can be understood by viewing the history, but that's not always easy to do when it's hooked. For example, the Transgender TRS crowner is incomprehensible when reading it on the thread, and I have to go directly to the crowner to see and edit the history (which I am doing, but it's easier when you can do it from the hooked crowner directly).

(I proposed this in the past, but it got locked after more similar suggestions started piling up in the comments)
Similar to how anything on the YMMV, Audience Reactions, Trivia, or Flame Bait indexes gets a warning icon when linked to, I believe that links that are on the Ambiguity Index should get a similar icon. This would warn people that these pages shouldn't be linked to anymore, and make it easier to spot these links so they can be replaced with something more precise.
