What interesting things have you only recently learned about?
To be clear, this is about things which have been true for some time and you only recently learned about, not things that only happened recently. In particular, recent deaths of celebrities and other high-profile individuals should go in the General RIP Thread.
So, what interesting things have you guys...and gals...only recently learned about?

"Scooby Dooby Doo!"I wouldn't poke fun at other tropers if I were you, guys. It's bad etiquette. Anyone can always verify a claim done anywhere on the web without having to call out the claimer (it'd have to be something extremely outrageous for them to be called out. This isn't). It's what I did when someone in the Trivia subpage of Punch-Out!! added a case about Nintendo having infringed coṕyright with a manga series. I looked for it and, so far, it all started with a Youtube rumor that reeks Poe's Law. I simply commented out the example in that page, explained why in the edit reasons (plural, yes, I needed two because I forgot to add something ), and moved on.
Anyway...
In Japan, there are two Valentine Days: The standard one when girls gift chocolates to boys, and a second one when it's the other way around (called White Day — the chocolates are often white, hence the day's name).

I like to keep my audience riveted.Same. Couldn't remember where I first read about her, though.
John Oliver met his wife at the 2008 RNC, where he was doing a piece and she was campaigning with Vets for Freedom. She and her colleagues helped him hide from security when he was caught entering a restricted area, which could've ended up with him getting deported.

I'm guessing it is a "12 as long as you're under 18" law or a "12 on paper, but the actual law is different". I've heard of few places where the AOC is genuinely under sixteen without any catches. Most examples are simply old laws that haven't been changed or are laws to prevent teens from being arrested.
Today is National One-Hit Wonder Day.
A few things.
The infamous quote, "Do you think God stays in heaven because he, too, lives in fear of what he's created?" is from Spy Kids, of all things.
The boss Facade from Link's Awakening is called "Matface" in Japan, which is delightful.
And (Link's Awakening gameplay spoiler) you can get the key to the Face Shrine before it's possible to actually reach the dungeon, which confused a streamer I was watching.
"Studies have shown that individuals on the Autistic Spectrum usually have a greater than average sensitivity to/empathy with, and desire to help, when they do notice somebody in pain. Their bluntness and lowered social inhibitions can make it easier for them to step forward to help than people who act 'sensitively' and tactfully ignore somebody's distress."
Well,Now I know.
I remember my first girlfriend and I clashed about that a lot, unfortunately. :(

May 4 is the Star Wars Day. It's not hard to see why.
EDIT: Holy snap, I just learned something else. The words isle and island are unrelated! The former isn't a shortened form of the latter, nor is the latter an extended form of the former! While they do mean the same thing, they come from different languages (respectively Latin and Old English).
