Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Okay, a couple of months back I started watching SWAT, a pretty great remake of the original SWAT, staring Shermar Moore as Daniel “Hondo” Harris, an exemplary S.W.A.T. member who finds himself thrust into leading his own team following its former Sergeant, his friend and mentor accidentally shooting a black teenager and immediately resigning.

Originally I was planning to wait till I finished the first season before proposing anyone, but as I’m only half way through I was convinced to just get started now. This series will probably end up having more candidates in the future (especially from looking over the synopsis of the remaining episodes and the next season) it’s just that sort of show.

However, as much as I enjoy watching it, I will admit it’s kind of frustrating to watch it if looking for candidates at least of the episodes I’ve seen so far. Due to the regularly variation of the type of crime their chasing each week (some of which are pretty imaginative) about every third episode sees them facing someone who starts strong and looks like they’re going to qualify. Only for them to fizzle out and never go the distance.

That is with one potential exception. Following a drive by shooting in Hondo’s neighbourhood, it looks like an old gang war has reignited. Unfortunately the truth is something far more sinister.

Who is He:

Trick Carter, leader and founder of Murder L.L.C. (which amounts to just him and three associates) A guy who toes the line between Professional Killer and Psycho for Hire like no one else I’ve ever seen before.

What Does He Do:

An formerly unaffiliated criminal, following serving a prison sentence where he built up several connections, Trick leaves with large ambitions. Inspired by reading autobiographies of successful businessmen and the history of Murder Incorporated, he decides to set up his own crew to perform professional hits promising risk free, cost effective assassinations with no blow back to his clients. Their MO, drive by shootings with a silenced pistol, no witnesses and using a different car each time. Even offering an option filming of the assassination, complete editing and appropriate background music to enhance their clients viewing enjoyment.

Offering a commission to a fence called Curtis to publicise his skills, Trick murders three members of the 20 street Hammers, then provides the film to Caleb. By doing so he almost shatters the truce between the Hammers and 42’s, threatening to plunge the neighbourhoods back into gang war. Not that he cares.

Satisfied that the earlier job is proof of resume, Trick (now in his business suit) approaches Stefan and Ivan Volkov, a pair of Russian mob boss brothers offering his services. They are reluctant, as they already have in house hitmen despite Trick’s assurances that outsourcing will protect them more, so he offers them a free introductory offer, he will kill anyone in the city for them and if they’re satisfied with the work their use him for future jobs.

Tracking down DA Rick Kushner, Trick shot him whilst he was waiting for the valet to bring about his car, his crew filming the event for the Volkov’s, escaping with no witnesses. Impressed the Volkov’s tell Trick to murder a property developer who refused to use their crews for his projects, to which Trick states he doesn’t need to know the reason just who to kill. After negotiating on the price Trick agrees to kill Nate Wilson and his wife.

As the pair was at a wedding Gala, Trick and his crew waited outside. As the Wilson’s left they began slowly stalking them, only hesitating as he had been commissioned to kill the wife first and ensure Nate had time to react to her death, before he killed him.

Fortunately Hondo’s source comes through for him, and he manages to warn the Wilson’s before Trick gets a clean shot. Following a brief police chase, cornered by Hondo and the rest of the S.W.A.T officers, Trick proceeds to blow the brains out of driver simply for panicking.

One of his crew manages to run, whilst the other tries to give himself up, at which point Trick shoots him to. Pretending to surrender, he emerges from the car and then tries to shoot Hondo, but is beaten to trigger killing his ambitions with him.

And the evidence they recovered was enough to put the Volkov’s away for Kushner’s murder, as well as prevent a new war between the 42’s and the Hammers.

Freudian Excuse or Redeeming traits:

None whatsoever, Trick as I said toes the line between being a professional and a psycho, he’s clearly intelligent, is always polite and soft spoken individual, offers a professional service that everyone acknowledges is clean and impressive. Even discussing economics and the benefits of his system like it was normal business with his potential employers.

But it’s impossible to ignore the fact that he obviously enjoys killing people. In fact, when point blank asked why he chose this life, his response is that all the biographies he’s read have taught him successful people do what they love, so he “figured I should to.

Trick’s basically a high functioning sociopath, making it clear he’ll happily kill anyone for no reason whatsoever. He just wants to get paid to do, so he strives to make hiring him the most attractive option.

The only reason he doesn’t kill all the members of his crew at the end, is he can’t get a clear shot of one of them.

Heinous Standard:

Having six victims to his name is a pretty high individual body count for this series, the majority of antagonists often kill one to three people. This is especially considering that all Trick’s kills take place over a single day.

Likewise whilst he has three associates, all the assassinations are carried about by Trick. Whilst the others presumably are meant to help if the circumstance requires it, all we see them doing is drive the cars and film Trick shooting people.

As for his employers, Curtis just wanted retaliation for the three members robbing him; he openly admits he didn’t expect Trick to go through with it. The Volkov’s are nasty individuals but lack his body count and clearly love each other.

Conclusion:

Yeah I think Trick is a keeper, and a wonderful performance by Amin Joseph.

I'd say yes to Trick. Sounds like he cuts over the baseline for this kind of show. Yes to Largo, too.

[tup] Number 2 - Damn. I wanted to be the one to make the first Austin Powers joke. Anyway, I approve of Largo being added.

It's... really weird to upvote one of the more "iconic" characters that were cut from this for not being bad enough, but Lighty's shown that was nonsense.

You guys ever get that feeling?

Not really. Just goes to show that there are some examples that were missed or were not seen as heinous at the time (such as Mok or Warren T. Rat).

Ok, I'm sorry, but...I can't support Deucalion going up. His threat is horrible but it's borne of jealousy and when Raphaela leaps into the Labyrinth, he screams in genuine horror, before he gets a scene before the minotaur's idol, promising to give him every newborn child, every 'drop of virgin blood' before he adds tearfully "just bring her back to me!"

I might as well chime in with this: The only reason we would cut Junko at this point is if a fourth Danganronpa game was made that either humanizes her, or reveals she is Made of Evil like Ganondorf. There could be other reasons but absolute no to removing her.

Fair warning: I can get pretty emotional and take things too seriously.

Sorry about the late response, but I’m still all in for Junko. She’s never portrayed completely seriously and Danganronpa Zero endears her to the reader and shows that she does have the potential to be a good person, at least for a little while.

Yes, the show makes her funny to the AUDIENCE but In-Universe she's treated seriously. This is just going off of clips of the show.

Its a bill cipher or joker situation.

Also, it dosent matter if it's shown she had the potential to be a good person, in fact? It makes her worse. She had the choice to be a Geniunly good person and simply brushed it off
