Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Complete Monster Cleanup Thread

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

New EP for y'all. This candidate has only been briefly discussed before and after a little conversation with Lighty, i decided to give him the proposal that he deserves.

What is the work? Scott Pilgrim is a well-known indie graphic novel series about the life of... Scott Pilgrim, a young Canadian slacker who falls madly in love with an American delivery girl by the name of Ramona Flowers... except things are not so simple. The reason why Scott is attracted to Ramona? She has access to "Subspace Highways", which she uses to deliver her packages, and most of these highways are directly connected to Scott's own Subspace, which in turn causes him to dream of her. And unfortunately for Scott, he must defeal all of Ramona's exes if he wants to date her. The series is quite obviously an action-comedy for the most part, until our Knight of Cerebus arrives. The movie adaptation made him a silly Adaptational Nice Guy with zero chances of counting, the opposite of his much, much worse original counterpart.

Who is he? The stoic and narcissistic owner of the Chaos Theatre, Gideon Gordon Graves is a rich, successful music mongul who admittedly never felt empathy for others even as a kid. A massive Control Freak with possible ties to the military, Gideon used his fortune and intelligence to create the Glow, a weapon of emotional warfare which manipulates the Subspace inside someone's head, trapping a person in their own worst thoughts, or, in his own words: "Seals you inside your head. Just you and your issues". Forming a romantic relationship with Ramona after meeting her at a party, Gideon saw this as a chance to experiment with the Glow and used her as his guinea pig. Fed up with his abuse, Ramona left him to preserve her own sanity. Enraged by the fact that he lost control over her life, Gideon posted a rant on the internet about Ramona while he was drunk, and was contacted by her six other exes, deciding to reunite them and have one more chance to control Ramona's future. Hiding inside Scott's Subspace to spy on Ramona, Gideon "spiced up" some of his memories For the Evulz.

After defeating the exes, Scott goes to the Chaos Theatre to confront Gideon, and is offered a chance to join him in controlling Ramona's life; when Scott refuses, Gideon simply impales him with a sword, killing him. We soon discover Gideon's worst crime: He is keeping his own six ex-girlfriends brainwashed and cryogenically frozen above the Chaos Theatre, and he has a capsule reserved for Ramona, with the implication that he is using them as his sex slaves. Taking advantage of the fact that his own sociopathy protects him from the effects of the Glow, Gideon's obsession for Ramona is also the result of his evil mind, since he wants to use her Subspace powers for himself, intending on spreading the Glow until he has control over every mind in the world; notably, Gideon attacks his own crowd at the Chaos Theatre with the Glow. Mortally wounding Ramona, Gideon traps her inside her head, a place where Gideon is her only God. Returning to life and saving Ramona from Gideon, Scott confronts and understands his own inner demons, gaining the ability to defeat Gideon for good with the help of Ramona.

Freudian Excuses? Nope.

Heinous? This Gideon has something very important that his movie counterpart lacks, and that is the Glow, which is basically weaponized psychological torture that is treated seriously, and this guy wants to use this in every person in the world. And then there's the thing with his ex-girlfriends, and how he can "date" them anytime he wants... yeesh.

Conclusion? I'll let you be the judge.

Let's finally get this out of the way before moving on to the Guild Wars stuff.

Diablo 3: Maghda is a devout servant of Belial, the Lord of Lies, and the leader of vile demon worshipers known as the Coven. Once a compatriot to Adria, Maghda assumed rulership of the Coven by poisoning her masters after believing them to be lax in their devotion to the Prime Evils. She devotes the Coven to worship of Belial and appeases her master by torturing and mutilating thousands beneath King Leoric's manor. Tasked to retrieve Tyrael's shattered sword, Maghda forces the local goat men to assault the survivors of New Tristram and leads the slaughter of the village of Wortham to get the pieces. She personally tortures Deckard Cain and Leah to force him to remake the sword, and kidnaps an injured Tyrael to torture him to death as a sacrifice. Ultimately forced to flee east to Caldeum, Maghda provides a distraction for Belial by butchering the city of Alcarnus to lure in the Nephalem. While slain, Maghda's atrocities set the standard for what horrors the Nephalem would encounter throughout their journey.

Probably before as Maghda is the Starter Villain of Diablo 3. I'm just gonna go ahead and it put it up on the Diablo 3 YMMV page unless you want to make any tweaks.

I also didn't want to make the entry too much longer than Adria's, but I really can't think of anything to cut from it. Adria just has a very short entry.

Hesitant [tup] to Gideon. Also, I think I may have finally found a better image for Mr. Blonde from Reservoir Dogs than the one we have now.

Mmmmmmm.... It looks like Mr. Blonde is trying to pour a water on a tortured person... Count me as an abstain but lean on weak yes to the image.

Btw, anyone counts on the anime Revisions? Torn on the main villain actually who is esentially a dog plushie voiced by Yazan Gable so yeah... Really need to rewatch again.

Ok having finished it. I don't think Zola counts do to not being heinous enough. As Red Skull appears for a few minutes and tries to bring a mountain down on everyone. Also Madame Hydra tortures the prisoners for fun and this kinda makes Zola seam less unque . As his experiments would have made him stand out. So that was a bust. If anyone else thinks he might count go ahead, but just don't have enough confidence in him.

[tup] Gideon Gordon Graves. I also remember the game, having not read the comic but having seen the film, and some of the content was... yeesh.

I also remember GGG's character page listed him as a CM in his image caption. All in all, not surprised he keeps but I am slightly surprised it took so long to get to him. Then again, I guess SP's over its most significant cultural relevance. It happens.
