Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Weird thing? Looks like the first Sinister Six book is part of the 90s stuff, but the other 2 aren't.

I'm surprised Skull, Brainiac, and Palpatine weren't originally listed.

I hope you feel well soon Scraggle.

[up][up][up] I can save you some time Lighty, the Gentleman does not count. He is a pretty big scum bag, but he loved his equally scummy brother and was sad when he died while fighting Spidey, much to his own surprise.

Alrighty, LS's next seasonally appropriate post!

What's the work?

The Shadow Builder claims to be based upon Bram Stoker's story of the same name, but...well, we know how that song and dance goes. anyways...Vassey, played by Michael Rooker, is a preacher seeking redemption, who is also a badass who takes on evil demon worshipers. Now, a group of satanists are playing with fire and summon something powerful and pure evil...enter the Shadow Builder.

Who is the Shadow Builder?

Long ago, when God made the world, there were angels...but some angels hated the decision to 'let there be light' and became demons in hatred and jealousy, with the light being the one thing they cannot bear. When the film begins, the evil archbishop of the Satan sect summons one of these beings, the sadistic Shadow Builder...who proceeds to kill the archbishop and his followers, reaping their souls for himself. Deciding to cause the apocalypse on his own schedule, the Shadow Builder seeks out a nearby town with a little boy there with a pure soul, with the potential to become a saint, so he can sacrifice him to open a portal to hell to devour all mankind and the world itself.

The Shadow Builder proceeds to target people in the town, cruelly murdering multiple people there, at one point confronting the local priest and gloating "After years of warning your congregation to be on the look out for my kind...you don't even recognize me? By existing, I confirm all you believe in, don't I...father?" And then adding that eventually the light "always fails you...priest." When he's told to go to hell, the Shadow Builder responds "hell would have come to you if you'd been more patient." The Shadow Builder continues reaping the souls of those he encounters, growing stronger as he seeks the boy Christopher...and causes chaos in the town by having some people murder their own loved ones, having a man split his wife's skull with an axe and then mocking him how his soul is too worthless to steal.

The Shadow Builder proceeds to ramp up the body count as he goes, before he uses the life of Chris's mother to capture Chris, attempting to sacrifice him in the church to usher in the apocalypse. Vassey arrives to save Chris and achieve his own redemption, battling the wicked demon, before he dies in the attempt, sacrificing himself for Chris, but also empowering the holy weapons team good guy needs. The Shadow Builder is struck by the rising sun when the sheriff, the other major hero, grabs his weapon, a holy scythe and, empowered by Vassey's sacrifice and the light, swings it on the Shadow Builder, obliterating him utterly.

Heinous standard?

Only villain except the guys at the start. The Shadow Builder has multiple murders, soul stealing, attempted omnicide and some nasty sadistic touches by making people murder their own loved ones. Well passes here.

Mitigating Qualities?

He has a hell of a personality, openly sadistic with biting sarcasm. Despite being a demon literally made of darkness, we get his backstory: he's a former angel who's pissed at God and embraced the darkness as a result, attempting to kill everything just to spite his father. The backstory pretty much removed all Made of Evil concerns there. He's evil because he chooses to be.

Conclusion?

A big yes.

I hope this isn't too late:

  • Digimon Wonderswan Series: Born from a Fusion Dance between a dying Machinedramon and a Chimeramon, Millenniumon seeks out total domination of everything and starts by defeating Digi Destined and warping the Digital World through presence alone. After his first loss against Ryo Akiyama, Millenniumon—as Moon=Millenniummon—is consumed by a lust for revenge, spawning a loose Diaboromon to drag Ryo and Ken to the Digital World that he then tears asunder. Upon losing again, he curses the Digital World with Dark Spores, one of which would ultimately corrupt Ken into the Digimon Kaiser. Finally, as ZeedMillenniumon, he planned on destroying the ENIAC and thus conquering the remnants of the Digimon multiverse. A horrid god who expected everyone and everything to bend to his will, ZeedMillenniumon was bent on conquering every timeline and dimension.

EDIT: Yes to the above btw.

So I asked this before but are we in agreement that three on-screen murders/rapes is the heinous standard for most works? Or is that only for certain works? I ask this because I've seen plenty of examples just barely missing the cut because they only tried to kill two people, in a world where killing isn't common. Or rather, every other approved villain had killed more.

Fair warning: I can get pretty emotional and take things too seriously.
