Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

The World Tree had being reach!!

  • 5 Elementos: In a series filled with gags that constantly mocks its own premise, this trio stands out due to their awful actions.
    • The Doctor Ebola is a Virus elemental and the greatest scientist of his era. Murdering his superior to take his place, Ebola manipulates his team in order to create the forbidden Dusk Virus —a virus that empowered it's host but eventually causes their death— before being discovered for the Secret Soldiers and Sebastian Rattengift. Killing all of them except Ember Llamaviva, which got accidentally infected with the Dusk Virus, Ebola moves to Beluga Town searching for Sebastian' family to obtain the Kimikoho —a ability that allowed him to see the chemical components of matter with his bare eye— before killing them except their baby Matarratas, which Ebola gives to an orphan girl to be raised as her brother while he watches them in the disguise of Desangrador, the chemistry teacher of the school, until Ebola discovered the Dusk Virus inside Kaji Llamaviva, son of Ember. Deciding that Matarratas was no longer useful, Ebola tries to kill him and his friends before being stopped. Returning several arcs later, Ebola returns to the Royal Army at the direct service of the King to help him in his invasion of the New World to reach Aya, the World Tree. Using several infected enemy Earth Elementals as workforce in an act that disgust even his colleage and former rival Colonel Blood, which Ebola murders, to reach its roots planning to infect Aya with the Dusk Virus and kill every non-Virus elemental in the world.
    • Kold Briz is a captain in a region bordering the forbidden beach. Being ordered to capture the protagonists, Briz shows no mercy even to the children except with Kaji in a attempt to avoid his father' wrath before the last living Earth elemental come to save them, which make Briz simply confesses to have participated in the genocide of Earth elementals in the infamous Day Zero and killed his fellow soldiers for their elements before fighting him in a fight that ends in him giving up his own life. Saving his own life by freezing himself, Briz come back to aid in the invasion to the New World before finding his old enemies and trying to kill them in revenge, promising giving them a painful death while telling to the family of his victim that he was just "finishing the job" by killing their adoptive brother. A seemingly polite man, Kold Briz is a genocidal Sociopathic Soldier that is as cold as his element.
    • Colonel Turtle was a average soldier with Metallic powers turned into a powerful cyborg for the Colonel Blood and a nationalist soldier whose belief is that the best defense is a good attack, which translated into reacting with violence to any issue, such as almost beheading a prisioner when interrogating him. A man in love with war and carnage, Turtle happily reacts to the orders to invade the New World where he kill his enemies with no mercy without caring for the consequences including endangering the World Tree itself. When ordered to capture Lluvia Aquarrica, Turtle brutally beats her and her friends and tries to squeeze her best friend in front of her with his metallic claw to get her before declaring that his coworked was a traitor for daring to order him to obey orders. A self proclaimed "Perfect Soldier" that embodifies the worst of the millitarism of the current regine, Turle claims to love the army but disobey orders that don't involve killing, Turtle horrified even his creator, the Colonel Blood.

Self preservation isn't inherently sympathetic, the self portion of that statement seems to indicate that. Sure survival is important and everything, but going further than you have to is able to eliminate any sympathy that would gain. That said I will say no to Dormammu here because that does sound potentially compromising.

You know it's funny how Patrick Lloyd went from counting to getting cut and Solomon Lane went from not counting to qualifying and for both, all because of one movie/season.

Before any of the new ones I was planning, I'm gonna do the redo ones first. I considered starting with LokSat because they have the most crimes, but I need to do Dunn before them since he came first in the show. I believe all four of these characters still count, but on the off chance someone needs to be cut, that's why I want to be sure. I'm gonna start with another one instead of either Castle CM:

What is the work?

Firewall is a 2006 thriller staring Harrison Ford as Jack Stansfield, an IT expert at a local bank who finds trouble in his life when his family (wife Beth, daughter Sarah and son Andy) are kidnapped and threatened to force Jack to participate in a planned bank robbery. Though valuable alive, they still undergo some cruelty in the meantime.

Who is he and what has he done?

Bill Cox claims to be a banker to Jack's friend and colleague Harry Romano to try to lure the two into leaving their current jobs (where a merger is undergoing and there's dissension between Jack and their new boss Gary Mitchell), but it's really a rouse to get close to them on Cox's part (if that even is his real name). Cox has his four men (Liam, Pim, Willy and Vel) break into Jack's house and kidnap his family at gunpoint. After having drinks with Jack and Harry (and after Harry leaves), Cox reveals his true intentions to Jack by showing him a photo sent to Cox on his phone of Sarah screaming. They drive to the house where the family is on the couch bound with tape and with it on their mouths too.

Cox insists Jack do what he asks or he'll have the family killed. He imprisons them all in the house by getting the password for the security system and then changing it. Cox has Liam hit Jack with the gun he keeps in the house when he lies about it being there. The next day, Jack gets free of the camera monitoring him long enough to try to get help, but Cox catches on and threatens to have Andy's arm broken in order to remind him of the stakes. Cox reveals he wants Jack to remotely remove $10K from 10K accounts (a total of $100 million) and place them in his accounts, but Jack warns that the system in which Cox's plan was formed was updated and changed, so Cox demands a new plan now.

Jack makes a desperate plea to Willy to help his family in exchange for money and the warning that attempts to breach the system will get them caught and Willy, being not disobedient to Cox, but shaky in his thinking, proves too much for Cox to want to handle. He tells Willy he's made too many mistakes, lures him into a false sense of security and then shoots him in the back in front of Jack and Beth. Jack tries to help the family escape in an attempt that nearly succeeds, but results in them being recaptured. Cox follows up on a threat he made earlier to Jack by offering a cookie to Andy that he says doesn't have peanuts in it, resulting in Andy beginning to suffocate as a result of his allergy. Cox also takes the epipen and only gives it back after Jack promises to help with the robbery.

Beth warns Cox's men that much like Willy, he plans to dispose of them to keep the money for himself, but nobody heeds her warning. After the robbery is successful, Cox crashes the system and leaves Jack to deal with the fallout. Jack returns home and finds everyone is gone, but then Liam arrives and tries to force Jack to come with him at gunpoint. After Jack kills Liam, he sneaks into Harry's empty apartment to get his friend's help, but finds a message on the machine of Beth saying she loves Harry and is leaving Jack (Cox had Liam put a gun to Beth's head earlier and force her to leave the message). Cox and Harry arrive and Jack hides. It was suggested that Harry was involved in the whole scheme earlier, but it's revealed that he completely believes Cox is a banker and thinks he can actually open doors for them.

Cox shoots Harry dead while his back is turned to further frame Jack and solidify Jack and Harry being the culprits of the robbery. Jack later surmises to his secretary Janet Stone (who Cox forced him to fire earlier) that the high gambling debts that showed up on his records earlier was part of the plan to give Jack a motive for the robbery and have him disappear with the money for good by means of Cox having Liam kill Jack and hide his body somewhere. Eventually after Jack is able to access a bank computer and retrieve the money, he and Janet track down Cox's hideout where he's taken the family. The freshly dug ditches there imply Cox planned to kill them all there and bury them, never intending to let them go.

Chaos breaks out as Cox threatens the family again and Vel (the only one sympathetic to the family who truly believed they'd all live) standing up for the family and getting shot by Cox for his trouble. Sarah escapes, but is hunted down by Pim, who is killed by Jack with the car crashing into him and then into a shed with gas in it. Jack tackles Cox and gives Beth, Sarah and Andy the chance to get away. A brutal fight breaks out between the two in which Cox nearly succeeds in killing Jack, but at long last, Jack gets a whole of a pickax and stabs Cox in the back with it, killing the ruthless madman once and for all.

Heinous standard?

Cox is the Big Bad and murders three men without remorse and plans to kill a family of four without remorse. Jack also kills three men (including Cox himself), but it's all in self-defense and the defense of his family. Liam and Pim each have some personal crimes of their own, but it's mostly physical or verbal threats. They're both very subservient to Cox and Cox treats any abuse he witnesses them do to the family with indifference, only caring that they live long enough for him to get what he wants. Since he hired them, Cox can in a way be held partially responsible for their own choices too. Anything Cox lacks in quantity, he makes up in quality, especially with his willingness to let a young boy DIE from his throat closing up.

Redeeming qualities? Mitigating factors?

Cox keeps the family dog Rusty alive throughout the scheme, but that's only because he wants the family to have his trust and truly believe that they'll all get out of the situation alive and that means giving the dog the same faux respect. Cox apologizes to Beth for the trouble at first, but he doesn't genuinely mean it, he's only pretending to be polite to further sell that he means no actual harm. It could be hinted that Cox needed the money to pay off gambling debts he might have had, but that's never addressed and since he gave Jack the debt electronically in the first place, he could have very easily gotten rid of his own that way too. Cox also lets Andy watch him flip flapjacks and fix the TV for him (using the term of endearment "big fella" at many times), but none of this is out of actual care for the boy. Cox only wishes to make Andy comfortable so he'll be easier to cooperate with (after the flapjack scene, Cox mentions knowing about Andy's peanut allergy to Jack for future reference) because he then proceeds to give him the bad cookie after the TV remote scene after promising Andy there were no peanuts and flat-out LYING about it. It's pretty clear that Cox is only acting out actual human emotions and he's otherwise just doing it all as part of his bigger plan. He's nothing more than an emotionless and harsh individual with the God given ability to fabricate having actual feelings.

Verdict?

I still say [tup]! He counts just as much as he did before if not more so! Fun fact: My second favorite movie villain for a long time (my first was and still is to some degree the Emperor).

Does that mean you have to do a new one, Future? Does that mean you have to bring this up again with an EP that's twice as needlessly thick and long even though there's nothing else to talk about with this character?

I'm shutting this down here. Don't do redo posts unless there's actually something that needs to looked at with the villains you've already approved. Putting them up again because nothing more than personal dissatisfaction is, at best, a waste of everyone's time.

So, keeping in theme with predators...

What is the work?

Gamba: Gamba to Nakama-tachi, or Air Bound in English, is a 2015 CGI-animated Japanese film based on an anime series itself based on a novel. The film concerns two city mice — Gavin and Matthew respectively — living their daily lives in the city. While gathering food, Gavin becomes fascinated by the ocean, and so, he convinces Matthew to accompany him on an adventure. Sure enough, they meet up with some mice nicknamed the "ship mice" due to their expeditions on the open seas. When a young mouse named Chester arrives to convince the ship mice to help save his people from the evil weasels, they embark on a journey to vanquish the pests.

Who is he?

Winston the White Weasel is the leader of the weasels who led several attacks on Dream Island in order to obtain the Dream Island mice. One instance of his raids was when he led an attack on the sea gulls which resulted in several gulls going down fighting as well as many of the eggs getting smashed.

What has he done?

Not too long after Gavin and Matthew arrive to Dream Island, Winston invades yet again, but it seems that he is interested in having a peaceful celebration with the mice, and even brings fruit. But of course, this was a ruse: Winston orders his men to perform a hypnotic dance that causes a majority of the mice to aimlessly walk towards the waters. It is here that Winston's actual plan was to lure the mice into the water, and when they were within arms' reach, he and his men would tear them apart and eat them. The hypnotic dance gets interrupted and the leader of the Dream Island mice — Clarence — swims over to act as a diversion. Winston then has one of his weasels butt Clarence into the water and he drowns. Right when the weasels had the mice where they wanted them, Winston notices that the sun was rising, and orders his men to return.

While figuring out how to escape without the weasels being the wiser, the mice decide to take the currents and use them to travel to a neighboring island based in part of an old legend. Gavin recklessly runs out to give the Dream Island mice time to evacuate, and the ship mice and some of the Dream Island mice travel afterwards. Being aware that this was a diversion, Winston goes after the ship mice and Dream Island mice, cornering them whilst admitting that he hadn't had so much time playing with his food since he was a child, but he regrets that Gavin wouldn't be witness to the fun.

Gavin arrives with some of the sea gulls, and he forces Winston underneath the waves. However, Winston resurfaces, pissed that these animals thought they could defeat him. He takes down a few of the sea gulls before attempting to kill Gavin but the tide returns, sweeping him and Gavin into the deep. Shelley — the daughter of the late leader — uses a sea gull to enter into the water. Winston is revealed to still not be fully dead, and he tries to grab Gavin only for Shelley to save Gavin in the nick of time. With no one to take down with him, Winston succumbs and sinks further into the abyss.

Freudian Excuse? Mitigating factors?

None for any excuses. Yes, he is a predator who has to eat, but in this instance, he takes far too much enjoyment with killing and playing with his food admitting that he hadn't had as much fun terrorizing and killing since he was a child. Or when he meets up with Rusty again, he laughs to himself, reminiscing how he nearly clawed Rusty to near death. In short, rather than being depicted as needing to kill out of necessity, he instead views it as fun.

Winston gets notified that one of his weasels had been killed by mice, but rather than for what you would expect, Winston instead blows that weasel's death off, rather instead being impressed that a mouse managed to kill a weasel. His admiration is also nothing more than hollow as he still views the mice as nothing more than food which makes him especially angered when he nearly drowned teh first time.

Heinous standard

Is the Big Bad. As for his actions, there would be his attempted killing of several of teh Dream Island mice alongside leading numerous attacks on the island, including his actions in regards to the sea gulls.

Conclusion

Meh, I could go either way with him honestly. Thoughts?
