Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

A 'YES' to Ezel, the Jackal, and Thomas + The Master.

Anywho, time for another couple of candidates from myself and Scraggle, this time from a Western Animation series.

EDIT: Well crap, this was embarassing for any who saw it. >_>

<_<

Aaaanywho, HERE'S the full post.

What's the work?

Men in Black is a 2001 animated spin-off series of the classic (Depending on your age + preferences) 1997 sci fi action comedy, Men in Black.

In it, we follow the classified government organziation assigned to investigate paranormal and extraterrestial goings-ons, known as the Men in Black, whose agent names are letters of the alphabet (Agent Z; Agent K; etc.)

Our heroes? No nonsense, always the stoic one Agent Kay (K), and his new rookie partner, goofy, sarcastic, and snarky Agent Jay (J).

Together, the duo fight various aliens, monsters, and the just plain weird.

In some cases, though, the threat is something much closer to home. And our first candidate? One such example, who proves that sometimes, Humans Are the Real Monsters indeed.

Who is he?

Agent "A" was once one of the primary founders of Mi B, and the mentor of Agent Kay. A was known for his love of alien biology, however one day, he took things a bit...too far.

While on a standard field op with Kay, A got his hands on a device known as the Cosmic Integrator, a device that can merge two separate biologies into one.

A began proclaiming his plans to use the Comic Integrator for his own ends, and though first offering Kay a chance to join him, A coldly guns down his protege when he tries to talk A out of going rogue (Kay lived, but still).

Now? Agent A, "Alpha", is the most recurring villain in the series and the Arch-Enemy of Mi B as a whole.

What has he done?

Using the Cosmic Integrator, Alpha fled Earth and began a spree that lead to him becoming a bogeyman dreaded throughout the universe.

Alpha would hunt down an alien whose...parts looked appealing, be they limbs, organs, or anything else, and would proceed to take said part, whether killing the alien or leaving them alive being entirely up to what he is stealing.

Once obtaining the piece he wanted, Alpha would use the Cosmic Integrator to merge said piece with his own body, and, for the next 2 decades, Alpha became what can only be described as an alien Serial Killer. Niiiice.

Oh, and quite a few of Alpha's choice cuts? The heads of aliens, which are fully sentient, mind, but forced to do whatever Alpha wills (Normally bite or swing at people) while still being aware of their surroundings.

Eventually deciding it's time to return to Earth, Alpha's first act is to steal one of the two hearts a nearby Sintillian alien has (Hearts that are oddly sentient and NEVER stop beating unless outright killed themselves).

After leaving Kay a trail of clues that lead him to Alpha's base, Alpha reveals his new half alien form while preparing to integrate the Sintillian heart into himself to make himself immortal via a neverending heart, however, after being beaten back by Kay and his new partner Jay, Alpha settles for frying the heart just to be a prick before fleeing.

Alpha next tears his way into Mi B headquarters to kidnap the same Sintillian he stole the first heart from, and he makes plans to steal its second heart to make up for the first one he lost, which will outright kill the Sintillian.

Kay finds and confronts Alpha, who offers Kay one last chance to join him before attempting to kill both Kay, the Sintillian, and the recently arrived Jay and Agent Elle (L).

Alpha is seemingly killed in the ensuing scuffle, however, having survived this duel, goes on to force local alien pawn shop runner Jack Jeebs to find and steal alien parts for him, no matter the cost, and Jeebs later attempts to kidnap an alien baby and steal its arm for Alpha.

When learning that Jay has come into possession of a powerful shapeshifting symbiote named Troy, Alpha ambushes Jay and forces Troy to integrate into himself, however unfortunately for Alpha, Troy's regenrative ability causes ALL of the alien body parts Alpha had pilfered over the decades to regrow their respective bodies, and the now back to full bodied aliens try to kill Alpha for what he did to them, leading Alpha to flee, lopping off a nearby alien's arm in the process as a start to his new spree.

Going on to butcher several more aliens to get new parts, Alpha later gets his hands on one of Mi B's "Quick Clones", and, creating one of Jay, sends him to Mi B headquarters to extract the brain of the head of Mi B, Zed (Z).

Once Clone!Jay steals Zed's brain via alien technology that leaves his body unharmed, Alpha stuffs Zed's brain in a jar, able to hear and talk, but not see, and plans to force all information regarding Mi B out of him, at which point Kay and Jay show up and rescue Zed, leaving an enraged Alpha to flee.

Following this up by hiring the alien criminal Dak to hijack an Mi B satellite, Alpha plans to turn said satellite into a Kill Sat and use it to first wipe out Mi B headquarters, then move on to use it in his conquest of Earth (Yes, he has moved onto conquering Earth, why do you ask?).

Though his first shot is disabled before it directly hits Mi B HQ, the blast still causes damage throughout the base and injures quite a few agents, at which point Alpha tries to fix the satellite then kill the saboteurs, Agents Jay and Kay (Who else?).

Seemingly killed in an explosion alongside Dak by the Agents, Alpha and Dak actually merged while floating in space, and reconstitute themselves before hijacking a Russian rocket, leaving the lone Russian astronaut out in space with no rocket to get home with.

Once crash landing in Antarctica, Alpha learns that an ancient space ship is buried in the ice nearby, and manages to locate then take control of it.

Alpha then tries to use the ship's massive forepower to melt Antarctica itself and flood half the planet, snarking that Nevada could do with a beachside, only being stopped by the combined efforts of Jay and Kay, leading to Dak and Alpha separating while Alpha plunges into the cold depths of the Antarctica waters, ending his evil....

Pffft, just kidding, not gonna go down that easy.

Alpha later resurfaces (Literally) and corners an ice fisher who he is all but stated to murder for parts, after which he begins integrating the cybernetics of alien races into himself, beliving that a combo of biology and technology will give him the boost he needs to complete his plans.

Hearing that Zed has seemingly retired in an unknown location, Alpha captures Jay, painfully mind probes him for the location of Zed's retirement, then tries to ambush Zed and force the secrets of Mi B out of him, only for it to be revealed that Mi B had played Alpha into a trap.

Alpha happily brutalizes and nearly kills dozens of Mi B agents before trying the same on Zed, only being stopped when Jay shoves one of Alpha's own alien appeandages, one which produces massive electrical shocks, into Alpha's neck, overloading his techno implants (Oops) and completely frying every single alien and robotic part on him, leaving him a frail, harmless man once more who is then locked away in Mi B, hopefully for all eternity.

BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE!

When the alien race known as the Ixions, heading by the psychopathic Vangus (Whom Scraggle will be handling next), begin making secret strikes at the Earth oil reserves, Jay confronts Alpha about it in a Hannibal Lecter style situation, ending with Alpha tricking Jay into giving him an electronic chess game.

Using this game to engineer his escape (Yes, he's THAT good), Alpha rather quickly gets himself more alien and techno parts, at which point it is revealed that he has made an alliance with Vangus and the Ixions: Alpha will assist them in conquering Earth so as to allow them to get their hands on Earth's massive oil supply, which to the alien universe is the equivalent of gold, in exchange for Alpha being allowed to rule the planet once the Ixions are done with it.

In the two part finale, Alpha and Vangud make their move, and begin organizing the full scale invasion of Earth, leading to the destruction of the United Nations and the Washington monument (Both conveniently evacuated at the time of the destrcution), while cities around the world are laid siege to by the Ixion forces.

Once annihilating Mi B headquarters (With most of the agents able to escape in time), Alpha and Vangus capture Jay and Kay onboard the Ixion mothership, at which point Alpha and Vangus have a BIT of a disagreement.

See, Vangus, tired of the resistance the Earth has been putting up, has decided to simply drop a bomb that will obliterate the surface of the planet and cause the oil to ooze up out of the crust.

Which, seeing as Alpha wants to RULE the Earth, would present a bit of a problem for him, so after a quick duel between each other, Vangus manages to set the missile to launch in the next few moments, leaving Alpha, Kay, and Jay to begin brainstorming how to stop it.

Ultimately, Alpha tries to defuse the missile before it launches, only for it to jump ahead of schedule and fire with Alpha onboard.

Kay and Jay luckily manage to catch up to the missile with their own ship and blast it to bits before it hits the Earth, with Alpha's final words before being killed, seeing as he himself is on the missile, being an annoyed "Ooooh, not like THIS."

And thus, the day, and Earth, are saved, thanks to the Powerpuff Girls MEN IN BLACK!

Freudian Excuse or other redeeming features?

Ah, no. Alpha is just a megalomaniac obsessed with upgrading himself to almighty power before conquering the Earth, then the galaxy.

The ONLY point worth mentioning is that, in the end, he DOES try to save the Earth, but this is purely out of a desire to RULE the planet rather than destroy it, with his only words once realising that the missile has launched and will destroy the planet being "Well old girl, at least if I can't have you, NO ONE WILL."

Heinousness?

Worst in-story alongside Vangus, with Vangus edging him out by JUST a bit with his attempted genocide of humanity.

However, even with this in mind, Alpha is still an absolute BEAST of a cartoon villain, with countless acts of mutilation and butchering of aliens, murder of humans, attempted flooding of half the planet, and leading a full scale alien invasion on the planet being just his notable ones.

Also, while this series shares SOME continuity with the film series, there's nothing substantial there to connect the two, and heck, even if there were, Alpha (And Vangus) would still handily make it.

Final Verduct?

A fairly easy Keep in my humble opinion. Expect Vangus from Scraggle soon, followed by another villain from the series from myself soon after THAT.

An obvious yes to Alpha.

Now, before I get to Vangus, I'll be following up on Ravok's proposal from Turkey Shoot. You see, the remake isn't the only one with qualifiers... the original 1982 Turkey Shoot, also known as Escape 2000? Three contenders. I'll be proposing the first two myself.

What's the setting?

In some unspecified time in the future after some unspecified holocaust, humanity has devolved to a brutal dystopia where the police are thoroughly corrupts and every single person that so much as slightly goes against the authoritarian regime — named "Deviants" — are sent to good old reeducation camps, where our dystopian motto for the day is: 'Freedom is obedience, obedience is work, work is life.' Our protagonists are innocent ingenue Chris, rebel Paul, and promiscuous woman Rita. Our first two baddies today are, played by Michael Craig, Charlie Thatcher (yeah, brutal authoritarian named Thatcher... draw your own conclusions there) and his thuggish second-in-command Ritter. In a bit of a similar vein to my previous candidates, Thatcher decides to organize a live hunt he calls the turkey shoot... with, of course, the prisoners as the prey.

Who are Thatcher and Ritter? What have they done?

Camp master and chief enforcer respective, Thatcher and Ritter run Camp 47 — noted to be a tough camp even by the regime's standards — where Deviants are sent to be ostensibly reeducated and sent back to society. Naturally, "reeducation" implies abuse and torture at the hands of Thatcher and Ritter, and being set free is far from a possibility... under Thatcher's watchful eye, Ritter allows his guards full rein to mass rape, torture, and murder of the camps' dozens of prisoners. As Thatcher sends Paul to torture (specifically being forced to hold up a weight in a cramped cage that threatens to crush him if he ever stops letting go... something Thatcher spitefully makes twice as difficult for him once Paul refuses to break) the moment he enters the camp purely on the rebellious reputation he's cultivated, Ritter introduces himself forcing one of the camp's smaller female prisoners to verbally degrade herself as the "lowest form of life" imaginable whilst shadowboxing her... and when she's too terrified to go any further, Ritter brutally beats her to death. This is implied to be a very common pastime of Ritter's, and we later see Ritter host an execution of one of the camp's attempted escapees; forcing him to play the "ball game" — i.e. trying to keep hold of two balls filled with oil while Ritter and his goons kick him about and spray oil everywhere — before setting the oil on fire and burning the man alive. Once again, very common pastime for Ritter. Thatcher and Ritter's complete intent here is to spiritually break the prisoners in every way possible.

Thatcher, in the meanwhile, rounds up some wealthy VIPs — fat secretary Mallory, upper-class prick Tito and his feral freak pet, and the truly psychotic Jennifer (our third contender, whom Ravok will post) — for his planned "turkey hunt," where the VIPs will choose a select few of the camp's prisoners and send them out into the jungle surrounding the camp to be used as live sport for the hunt. Thatcher promises everyone release if they can make it, but naturally, this is a lie... the camp's located on a remote island with no possibility of escape, meaning it's game over for the Deviants in the turkey shoot either way. Our three protagonists and slimy ginger Smug Snake Dodge are sent to participate in the hunt. Ritter spitefully takes off Dodge's glasses before he goes out into the jungle and sends him out to blindly wander and inevitably be killed. Why? Spite. That accounts for a lot of what Ritter does.

Anyways, in the turkey shoot proper, Thatcher gets to business hunting down Paul and one of the camp's more feisty prisoners, Griff, the latter chosen purely so he can have the pleasure of personally executing him. Thatcher gets an easy shot on Paul and decides killing him then and there is too easy, instead tormenting him by firing and intentionally missing to screw with him before leaving him to wander. Thatcher takes care of Griff by double-teaming with Jennifer, watching as Jennifer riddled Griff's limbs full of arrows before Thatcher personally runs over Griff and kills him. Ritter, in the meanwhile, sets out with Mallory to hunt the most vulnerable target, Chris... casually revealing that if he was camp master, he'd simply sadistically kill every deviant he got his hands on himself and that he advocates complete deviant genocide. Ritter reacts with alarming apathy to the horrible death of one of his goons by a trap set up by Griff, and pursues Chris to a canefield which he sets alight to either flush her out into Mallory's clutches or burn her alive. Mallory pursues and he's injured by Paul, who quickly escapes out to the shoreline with Chris. Ritter ignores Mallory's loud screams of fear and leaves him to burn alive in the canefield as he pursues Paul and Chris out to the shoreline, where a final confrontation between him and Paul ensues. Ritter tries to take his time to slowly beat Paul to death and later settles for trying to drown and then just shoot him, but Chris hacks off his hands with his own machete from behind and leaves him to bleed out.

Thatcher, in the meanwhile? Isn't having it so good. With everyone but Jennifer dead, Thatcher returns to the camp which Paul and Chris have put out into complete disarray, barging a hole in the fences surrounding it and waging outright war with the guards to lead the prisoners to freedom. In the midst of an airstrike ordered by Jennifer shortly before her own death, Thatcher takes full part in attempting to massacre all the surviving prisoners himself alongside his men before Paul shoots him to bloody ribbons. End Thatcher's bloody regime.

Any mitigating factors?

Not a one for the either of them. Thatcher's the nastiest part of the regime we see and any and all moments of potential altruism are either revealed as shallow hypocrisy or purely for the sake of pragmatism. Ritter, on the other hand? Nothing to talk about there. Whatsoever. Thatcher's a cold, authoritarian monster and Ritter is a sadistic spiteful thug. Ritter takes full glee in making the camp as corrupt as possible alongside Thatcher and both of them show themselves to be plenty nasty in their own rights.

Conclusion?

Solid keep for the both of them. What say you all?

[tup] To Alpha, Charlie, and Ritter.

Well now its finally Wed 26 in my time so now I can talk about Ripper Street fifth and final series. Before I discuss any possible candidates I might have to warrant a few cuts on the show.

First possible cut would have to be Jedediah Shine- Like I said long ago Jedediah has returned from series 2 to series five and is now in charge of hunting down Edmund Reid, Homer Jackson, and Susan Hart who are now fugitives of White chapel and since Reid and Drake were responsible for giving him the beating of a life time leaving him permanently damaged cause him to become addicted to morphine but Drake is now dead he has dedicated to bring Reid to the gallows to hang. Through his hunt he has done a couple of unsavory things while hunting Reid which include burning down a theater and attempting to rape a potential witness and once he finally has Reid he decides to return the favor and beat Reid to a bloody pulp before attempting to kill him by putting his head upon Reid head. Then, and this is where I warrant the cut, he notices Reid's daughter Matilda and having given her the message of him being the one who has to arrest Reid and getting acquainted with her, he first has his men take her way from the presence so she would not have to see her father get killed and then he realizes he can't go through with it knowing that killing Reid will make Matilda an orphan with him admitting to become genuinely fond of her and because of this he is content with sparing Reid throwing him in jail and taking a final dose of morphine to kill himself. So it Jedediah final moments he Pets the Dog, and does have standards which apparently warrants a cut. It is a shame to see him go he was one of my favorites C Ms to have EP.

Now the second possible cut would have to be Dr. Charles Broadwick- This doesn't have to do with gaining any redeeming qualities and more due to the fact he doesn't really stand out to me in terms of heinousness. Out of all the RP candidates he has the least heinous deeds and uniqueness. Originally he counted due to having a total body count of 14 people however this body count was then eclipsed by Ronald Capshaw's total body count of 62 people and they both have similar resources, motivations and worked with someone to help him. Still Broadwick had the uniqueness of killing a cop, but that to was taken away of Nathaniel Dove a recurring antagonist of series 4 and 5 who not only kill a cop but also one of the main characters. Though Broadwick did plan to bomb a University contain his colleagues and set up his harmful electric currents throughout London I'm not sure if that might be enough for him to stay.

Now as for any candidate of series 5, I can safely say no one counts.

Nathaniel Dove is notorious for killing his victims by bitting them one of which include Bennet Drake, he fails to count because of A. he seems to have some kind mental illness that seems to impair his moral agency, B. he does have people whom he genuinely loves and cares for including a woman, a child, and his brother Augustus Dove, and C. he does have the standard of never killing kids and turns on his brother for that exact reason.

Augustis Dove is a corrupt commissioner and murders a child but fails to count because A. other than murdering a child and hunting the the fugitives he doesn't do anything that is particularly heinous, and B. He does genuinely love and care for his brother and the reason why he murder the aforementioned kid was because he served as a witness to Nathaniel's crime, an in a brutal way was trying to protect his brother.

There also an old hag thats acquainted with the Dove brother and murders one guy but doesn't have much characterization or any other heinous deeds to count.

With that I conclude that this will be the last time I will ever discuss Ripper Street on this thread. Though I have to say it was a damm good show and I will forever miss it.

Also ACW on the entries can you the "seasons" to "series" since the UK apparently goes by that?

Personally, I felt the Jackal qualifies as a Complete Monster because while he does have moments where Pierce Brown gives sympathy for the character, it was more along the lines of getting the audience to pity him as a product of his environment rather than him having any standards or morals. I never got the impression that the narrative was trying to make the audience sympathize with him, rather that the intent was that we understand the things that shaped him into the villain he became.

[up] That's why that entry is in the Legends section. As in not canon anymore. Doesn't change the fact that Palpatine deserves that entry, especially since he outright attempts to murder a baby and steal his body, which is quite unique for Star Wars in any capacity.

@ACW: Yup, will happily post a slightly tweaked Canon!Palpatine entry to include the Contingency.

@Polar Phantom: Nope, Alpha cares not one bit for Kay. While he does offer him two We Can Rule Together chances, neither are presented as anything but pragmatism and/or him being an egomaniac wanting a protege. Following these? Alpha never shows any form of affection to Kay and tries NUMEROUS times to sadistically murder him.with a smile on his face.

Now then, for Jennifer from Turkey Shoot.

Who is she?

Jennifer is one of the rich socialites invited to the titular Turkey Shoot by Charles Thatcher, and by far the most sadistic guest.

What has she done?

Jennifer is instantly shown to be both skilled with her crossbow, which fires everything from poisoned ones to explosive ones, and a rather sadustix individual when she nonchalantly tests a paralyzing dart on a nearby Deviant prisoner.

Once the Turkey Shoot begins, Jennifer leaves her own target, the woman Rita Daniels, alone for the time being, and specifically targets one of Thatcher's targets, who she gleefully shoots with a crossbow bolt through the arm...then the leg...then the other arm..and so on and so forth.

Once finishing with the man, who is then ran over by Thatcher, Jennifer goes after Rita, and, once hunting her down, draws out the poor girl's death by brutally stripping then torturing her (With rapey undertones there as well) for quite a while before running her through the mouth and out her neck with an arrow.

Later, once two of the Deviants, Paul and Chris, continue to evade being killed, and even manage to release several of the other Deviants from their imprisonment, Jennifer takes a step up in monstrosity and calls in an airstrike from fellow government facilities to bomb the crap out of the entirety of Camp 47, hoping to wipe out the dozens of Deviants at said camp while completely uncaring about the dozens of guards (And Thatcher) at said camp that will caught up in the explosions as well.

As the air strike is about to begin, Jennifer corners Chris inside Thatcher's private quarters, where she believes that they will both be safe from the strike, during which Jennifer plans to torture and kill Chris in much the same way she did Rita.

Fortunately, Chris gets the upper hand, and manages to stab Jennifer with one of her own arrows before fleeing tbe entire camp alongside Paul and many of the other Deviants following a shoptout with Thatcher and his goons, and while most Deviants escape before the bombing commences, the guards aren't so lucky.

Freudian Excuse or other redeeming qualities?

Not a one. Jennifer is just a pure, unadulterated sadist who stands out even from her fellow Turkey Shoot players as the wantonly sadistic.

Heinousness?

Jennifer faces tough competition from Thatcher and Ritter, obviously, however I think she's plenty bad enough.

She doesn't have the resources nor screentime of Thatcher and/or Ritter, and yet she gets one of the single most gruesome kills the in the story (Rita), takes advantage of the fact that she can't outright kill Griff to horribly shoot him in various slots of his body eoth a crossbow for fun, and has the highest attempted bodycount in the story when she calls in an air strike to kill the dozens upon dozens of people at Camp 47.

Final Verdict?

Methinks she's a Keeper.

And Palpatine, honestly, is still worse than he is. He has way more evil deeds, a ton of more petty cruelties and while he's never raped anyone, he tortured his own son and murdered the rest of his family when he was young.
